284 reasons why Bersih 2.0 must be remembered

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:23 PM PDT

JULY 9 — A few generations from now, budding Malaysian historians will no doubt expound and deliberate over whether July 9, 2011 was the beginning of the end for the Barisan Nasional regime.

Although by then the name "BN" will have long disappeared from the lexicon of public discourse, those seeking to trace the roots of the thriving democratic polity in Malaysia would certainly recognise the day of the Bersih 2.0 rally as a watershed moment for the country, and indeed, a day of inglorious infamy for the incumbent government.

Future Malaysians will find it difficult to comprehend the series of tumultuous events leading up to this day. They will wonder incredulously at the capricious flip-flopping of the government, and question how their forefathers could have put up with it for so long. They will appreciate the struggle against systemic injustice, but they will also ask why it took so long for the nation to wake.

Views will be many and varied. Political analysts will theorise and speculate upon the power struggles that took place, both between the opposing political forces and also those within the ruling coalition. Perhaps they will even single out the stupendous rebellion by the home minister and police chief as key catalytic factors of the crisis.

Some will undoubtedly attempt to dissect the semi-feudal dynamics encapsulating the process catalytic the intervention of the King and the open defiance of the royal word by an embattled regime and its overzealous cohorts.

Social scientists will also find parallel in the regional context, perhaps even christening the saga with a moniker as they did the "Arab Spring" or "Jasmine Revolution." A few books will invariably be spawned, maybe even a blockbuster movie following the de-politicisation of our film industry. For politicians, it will become the ultimate lesson catalytic how not to run a government, or give me a gun and I'll shoot myself repeatedly.

Grandfathers would regale their kin with stories of arrests, roadblocks and how Kuala Lumpur was brought to a virtual standstill. And almost everyone will find it ironic that a mass movement promoting "clean" and fair elections had brought out the dirtiest machinations of the authorities.

There are plenty more reasons why people will remember this day, and many more variants in which they will choose to rationalise it. But more than that, more than the possibility of hundreds of thousands of Malaysians taking to the streets, more than the bare exposal of the ruling party's weaknesses and insecurities, is the fact that in the last two and a half weeks, Malaysians have watched in utter disgust and disbelief as the rights of their fellow citizens were flagrantly disregarded for no good reason. Two hundred and eighty four times.

This includes the McCarthyistic detention of Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj, A. Letchuman, Sukumaran Munisamy, Sarasvathy Muthu, Sarat Babu and Choo Chon Kai — six Malaysians who care — under the Emergency Ordinance purportedly for "waging war against the King", a treasonous crime punishable by death.

This is in addition to the arbitrary arrests of 187 Malaysians since June 22, 2011 for speaking publicly about Bersih 2.0, and in some cases simply for donning a yellow T-shirt. And then we have the 91 Malaysians who have been served restriction orders and warned of consequences if they choose to exercise their basic human right to assembly.

July 9, 2011 may well turn out to be the cul-de-sac for the BN regime. Yet whatever happens and however we choose to interpret this episode, there are 284 reasons why we must never forget it.

Two hundred and eighty four Malaysians stripped of their rights. Two hundred and eighty four cases of abuse of power. Two hundred and eighty four memories that will haunt the ruling regime.

These 284 reasons will ensure that the Barisan Nasional will be, in the near future, a thing of the past.

‘It’s in the bag’

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 05:06 PM PDT

JULY 9 — Players are back in training, the start of the Premier League season is less than a month away and the thoughts of fans all over the world are turning to their team's prospects for the forthcoming campaign.

But what do those fans think? To find out, I'll give you a break from my own opinions (stop cheering) and, in the style of Plato's Republic (ok, I'm overselling it now), I present to you Dom and Dave's dialogue.

Dominic and David are Manchester United fans. Formerly season ticket holders at Old Trafford, work and family commitments have now restricted them to occasional visits and weekly stints in front of the television.

So it's fair to take them as a representation of the average United fan. And it appears they're feeling pretty good about the forthcoming Premier League season.

Dominic: As you said to me last year: it's in the bag! I think we'll have a really good year again. The central spine of the team will be unchanged — we've lost Scholes but he only played irregularly last season, and with the signings we've made to embellish the team we're only going to get better. Now we've got the record number of titles, I'm feeling very relaxed about the new season.

David: True, the team should be better than the one that won the league last season. With Jones coming from Blackburn and Smalling looking good, we've got long-term replacements for Vidic and Ferdinand, and Hernandez should keep on getting better up front. I think our biggest rivals this season are City. They don't concede many goals, and when you've got that defensive solidity in place you just need to make a couple of tweaks. Although that may go against Mancini's nature, they don't need to change much to really challenge if their manager gets a bit braver.

Dominic: I'm not sure, Dave. I think City have got a lot of work to do. They're still throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping it sticks. I agree they will break into the top three at the expense of Arsenal, but I don't think they'll win it. Chelsea are our biggest threat again.

David: No way, Dom — Chelsea are going to have a transitional year. That new guy in charge might install some confidence but he's a risk because he's unproven. They've still got the Torres problem, they should sell Drogba and their midfield is pedestrian and old. They haven't got a number 10 — somebody who can create something and put the ball on a plate for the strikers.

Dominic: But they've never had that kind of player, and they've won three titles without it...

David: Yes, because they've been able to rely on the battering ram approach with Drogba, and Lampard coming in behind him. But they're both past their best now so they've got to change their approach because Torres just isn't that kind of player. He needs service, and that's why they're trying to get Modric because he can create.

Dominic: Apparently they bid £22 million (RM105 million) for Modric but Redknapp says that's a joke. I'm not sure about him — he doesn't seem robust enough. Look at the great Premier League midfielders — Vieira, Lampard, Keane... he's not as imposing as they were. And Spurs have set their stall out now by saying they won't sell him.

David: That's just a bargaining tool, isn't it? They've publicly dismissed a bid of £22 million so their fans will accept it more when they talk the price up to £40 million. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is proud of getting big transfer fees — there's a story about how he cranked up Berbatov's fee at the last minute. He's doing the same with Modric. He ran the game when we played them at White Hart Lane last season and would be a good signing for Chelsea. I hope they don't get him.

Dominic: What about Arsenal, Dave? I think there's a real rot at that club. Clichy's already gone and if they lose Fabregas and Nasri as well, which looks likely, they'll be a lot weaker than last year.

David: You know what, Dom – I tipped Arsenal to win the league last year. Everyone laughed but for six months they were always in the top two. But Wenger failed to replace Vermaelen and the keeper and they faded away again.

Dominic: Lots of people in the Arsenal world seem to think that Wenger's untouchable and can't be challenged — "Arsene knows" and all that. That's probably not very healthy.

David: And how the hell have they let Nasri get down to just a year left on his contract? They should have either re-signed him to a longer deal or sold him by now. Like we did with Ronaldo when it was obvious he wanted to leave.

Dominic: What about Liverpool? They seem to be on the rise again under Dalglish and have made some decent signings.

David: No, don't worry about Liverpool, Dom. They might break into the top four at Arsenal's expense, but they won't win the league. They were starting from a zero position when Kenny came back last season and the pressures are very different when you're actually trying to win something.

Dominic: So Dave, we're saying that United will be strong again, Chelsea are too old, City and Liverpool aren't ready to challenge and Arsenal are fading. Looks like we're going to win the league again!

David: Yep, I'll go along with that.

Dominic: But we're fans, so we would say that...

West Ham call on Fifa to ban former player Diamanti

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 08:43 AM PDT

LONDON, July 8 — West Ham United want Fifa and the Italian football federation (FIGC) to suspend the registration of their former midfielder Alessandro Diamanti as his current club Brescia have failed to pay the latest instalment on his transfer fee.

The Italian international left West Ham to join Brescia last August for €2.2 million (RM9.56 million) but the English Club, relegated from the Premier League last season, want him banned until the matter is settled.

"Due to the failure of Brescia to pay the latest instalment fee, West Ham have asked the FIGC to suspend the player's registration and requested that the national association and Fifa impose sporting sanctions until the matter is resolved," the club said in a statement on their website (http://www.whufc.com).

No-one from Brescia was immediately available to comment.

Diamanti, 28, spent just a season at West Ham after signing on a five-year contract from Livorno in August 2009, scoring seven league goals in 28 appearances.

He scored six goals in 31 appearances for Brescia last season and won his first Italy cap.

New arrests in match-fixing scandal rock South Korea

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 07:30 AM PDT

SEOUL, July 8 — South Korean prosecutors have arrested almost 50 more players in connection with a match-fixing scandal that has rocked professional football in the country and threatens to leave several teams short-handed this weekend.

Changwon District Prosecutors' Office revealed 46 players, including nine from South Korea's military side Sangmu Phoenix, were charged yesterday in relation to the attempted fixing of 15 matches from June to October last year.

Prosecutors also charged 11 brokers, including several former players, with match-fixing.

A K-League crackdown has already resulted in 10 players —eight from the Daejon Citizen club alone — being booted out of the sport for accepting cash in return for helping to throw matches, while another has been banned for five years.

"We've confirmed so far that a wide range of players, not just reserve players but players who are on the national team and highly paid players, have been involved," Changwon's lead prosecutor said in a televised statement.

The league is expected to convene a meeting to discuss the latest arrests, which have thrown the 28-year-old league into chaos.

Local media reported that several teams could struggle to field teams for the weekend's matches due to the arrests.

One of the highest profile players to be detained in the ongoing investigation is South Korea international Choi Sung-kuk, who came forward under a K-League amnesty that offered reduced penalties and ended on July 7.

A player was also found dead in a hotel room with media reporting a suicide note was found at the scene linked to the match-fixing saga.

South Korea's government has also threatened to "shut down" the country's professional soccer league after losing patience with the embarrassing scandal.

The state-run sports bookmaker, Sports Toyo, has been prevented from taking bets on games since the corruption scandal broke. — Reuters

Jakarta rocks as stop on global concert circuit

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 08:38 PM PDT

JAKARTA, July 8 — Kylie Minogue cavorted amid indigo lights as thousands clapped and cheered. An ordinary concert scene — except that this was Indonesia, the world's most populous Islamic nations, and tickets cost more than an average month's pay for many.

Yet Minogue is far from alone in playing Jakarta, capital of Southeast Asia's top economy. Artists including Justin Bieber, Janet Jackson and Bruno Mars have all held concerts here in recent months, with the Cranberries, Linkin Park, and Lady Gaga set to come.

All are aiming at Indonesia's young population, the world's fourth-largest, with its rapidly-growing middle class that is able and eager to splash out for tickets.

"Indonesia is on the radar of artists in Asia because the market potential is huge and people don't mind spending more on tickets," said Jakarta-based music expert Bens Leo.

Farid Dermawan and 14 friends shelled out 1.5 million rupiah (RM528) each for their tickets, about 15 per cent higher than the capital's monthly minimum wage peg. Tickets ranged from 1 million to 4.5 million rupiah.

"The amount I paid is fine because I am a Kylie fan since I was born. I'm excited," said the 34-year-old Dermawan, a video clip director, as the silvery wings attached to the back of a black vest he made for the occasion flapped up.

About 90 per cent of the tickets for Minogue's concert sold, said promoter EC Entertainment, which added that the ticket price range was "affordable."

Yet even steeper concerts do well. A recent concert by David Foster sold out, despite tickets ranging from 1 million rupiah up to 25 times that price.

Leo said the big name rush is sparked partly by slower demand in countries such as the United States after the economic crisis. Merchandising possibilities are also appealing, allowing artists to rake in still more money.

With slowing global demand for CDs and cassettes worsened by the digital age, artists are looking to gain more from a much broader range of products, music expert Leo said.

"You don't see CDs on sale in concerts anymore, they offer merchandise now because that's what's selling," he added.

At the Minogue concert, fans lined up to buy T-shirts, jugs and books featuring Minogue's costumes and make-up.

Jakarta's success on the concert circuit is all the more surprising because the mammoth city of 10 million faces a number of hurdles, including a traffic situation Minogue herself described as "traffic drama" and caused the concert to start 30 minutes late. It took some fans three hours to arrive.

Until a few years ago there was also the threat of attacks by Islamic militants against "Western" symbols, which in the past resulted in the sudden cancellation of concerts, much to the disappointment of concert-goers.

But successful crackdowns on in recent years have helped brought reassurance to the far-flung archipelago.

"In the last one or two years concerts take place at least once a month, and the key draw is improved security," said Wiradi, the production general manager at EC Entertainment.

Despite Indonesia's Islamic majority, it remains a secular country and more welcoming to artists than neighbour Malaysia, where criticism of a planned Beyonce concert for its possible "inciting of moral issues" led to the event's cancellation.

Still, some doubts linger.

Intan Hafsanida, who came in a Greek-goddess style white dress and garland of golden leaves in line with the theme of the concert, said she first thought of seeing the concert in Singapore due to concerns it might be tamed for moral reasons.

But in the end, Minogue's revealing dresses and the gyrating crew of buff men cavorted on stage as planned.

"I know it's so expensive, but it's still Kylie," said Hafsanida."She has never been here before so this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience." — Reuters

‘Horrible Bosses’ eyes joblessness, aims for laughs

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 04:25 PM PDT

NEW YORK, July 8 — In Hollywood's new film comedy "Horrible Bosses," an ex-Lehman Brothers executive who is jobless and desperate for money offers sexual favours to some old buddies in return for cash.

While that may seem odd or out-of-place for a Wall Streeter in a Hollywood movie (Gordon Gekko would never stoop so low), the director of "Hollywood Bosses" sees many more such jokes and plots in films, given the currently weak economy.

Director Seth Gordon said his movie, about three old friends who feel stuck in their jobs so they plot to kill their mean bosses, reflected real people's struggles to change jobs.

"You are going to see a bunch of movies that are themed in this way about people that are stuck in some way and want to restart and possibly can't. I think that premise is something that is really relatable right now," Gordon said.

"Horrible Bosses," stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as three average Americans being bullied by their bosses — one played by Jennifer Aniston in her raunchiest role yet as an oversexed dentist — who want to move up the ladder but can't. Its big-name supporting cast includes Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and Colin Farrell.

Gordon said the scene where the friends encounter their old acquaintance from Lehman Brothers, who was still out of work, played on people's worries about what might happen if they lost or quit their jobs.

"We needed to put a fine point on the fact that these guys didn't have other options," said Gordon, adding that without plotting to go as far as kill their bosses, many real Americans could relate to feeling stuck in their current job.

"One thing has led to another, they (the main characters) are in their thirties, they have taken a job or a series of jobs and they have ended up in a place that in the current economy is relatively fragile," said the director, whose career has included directing episodes of TV series, "The Office," as well as the documentary movie, "Freakonomics."

"It's not like you can move easily from company to company anymore," he added, noting that his film is set against a backdrop of how the "American Dream" is no longer as attainable as it once was.

A few years ago dramatic films including "Up in the Air" about people being fired and serious documentaries such as "Inside Job" followed the initial global economic slump in 2008, but there have been far fewer comedies so it's difficult to forecast how "Horrible Bosses" will play for audiences.

Early reviews have noted that "Horrible Bosses" is hardly risky in its content, with website Indiewire noting it is "the lightest and fluffiest of stuff" and "an intermittently funny, instantly forgettable romp."

Apart from a wacky turn by Farrell playing a sleazy, cocaine addicted womanizer, Aniston is likely to capture the most attention as a sexually aggressive dentist who hits on her subordinate, played by Day, because it plays against her all-American, good girl image.

"I thought it would be fun for me to step out of that, what people usually like to see me play," Aniston told reporters. "I don't think I really care if there would be a bad reaction to it, I actually didn't think there would be, I thought it would be fun for everybody." — Reuters

KDN: Tiada keperluan guna tentera, Internet tidak dihalang

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 03:13 AM PDT

Ambiga derhaka titah Agong, dakwa Perkasa

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 03:06 AM PDT

DAULAT TUANKU!

How low can you go

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 05:12 PM PDT

JULY 8 — The whole political drama surrounding Bersih 2.0's planned rally on Saturday has reached historical proportions — but at which end, whether incredibly ridiculous or incredibly ingenious, still begs decision.

On one hand, we have Bersih 2.0, with a committee made up of respected citizens with a deep understanding of electoral issues, bent on rallying for one cause: free and fair elections in a country that has been ruled by one multi-party coalition for over 50 years.

On the other hand, I know I am not the only who feels that there is a tactical game plan being rolled out to disable Bersih 2.0 and build anxiety among the general population.

Recently, as my dad, his German friend and I talked about Malaysia's politics, my father pointed out that governments should realise that the people today have something that they might not have had 50 years ago: education.

When the country's politicians were in their 20s, things were a lot different. Yet, the answer is not in trying to woo young people over Twitter and Facebook, not when their generation knows you mess around with PSD scholarships. Plus, there are "Ignore", "Block" and "Unfollow" options.

Those in their late 20s and above are a lot more educated than some of the country's politicians will ever be. With this level of education comes better-paying jobs, and with that, comes exposure, evolving viewpoints, information exchange — all the traits of a developed country.

But we cannot be a developed country and try and suppress people for having an opinion. And what IS being a "developed country"? Bigger buildings? GST? Sky-high property prices? More FDI? Less FDI?

We must remember that there is no "developed country" without a developed people. Our people (and yes, this means non-Bumiputeras too) are our biggest asset. The government must realise this in some way or why keep screaming about brain drain?

Trying to woo people back to "serve their country" and yet call them "pendatang" is not going to win any votes, for goodness sake. Which is one of the many reasons why the brain-drain "problem" will never be solved.

In the meantime, organising a big bunch of motorcyclists to circle the opposition's headquarters while waving Umno flags was too obvious an attempt at intimidation.

Furthermore, we have been struggling with Mat Rempit hooligans for years and it was almost sad to see the obvious irony lost on the organiser(s).

And now, here we are. The claws are out. The law is being bastardised and used as a whip. "Waging war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong"? Seriously?

The police have been amazing. Their swift action in detaining hundreds under emergency laws in a few weeks has been impressive. Meanwhile, the acid splasher who injured over 20 women is still at large although months have passed and police have a photo-fit of the man.

Cue: Shamini throws her hands up in the air.

As the government and its allies clutch at straws, desperately wielding every "weapon" in their arsenal — from silat to rationing bus permits — we watch part in anger, part in amusement, and all in irritation.

Through all the politicking over the past few weeks, one message has prevailed: people power. When a group of ordinary folk band together for a cause, the grace with which it faces its adversaries yet remains steadfast, is something political parties (BN or PR) can gain pointers from.

Let's get one thing right — Bersih 2.0 has already won.

Sunderland sign defender Brown from Manchester United

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 07:31 AM PDT

MANCHESTER, July 7 – Sunderland signed defender Wes Brown from Manchester United today with the former England international signing a four-year deal, the Premier League clubs said.

The 31-year-old (picture) will be hoping for more regular first-team action in the north-east of England after being on the fringes at Old Trafford in recent seasons.

Sunderland did not disclose the transfer fee in the statement on their website (http://www.safc.com).

"(He has) a wealth of experience, including five Premier League winners' medals, two Champions League medals and having won both the FA Cup and League Cup on two occasions with United," the statement said.

Brown, who had spent his entire career at United after coming up through their youth ranks, made 361 appearances for the club and also won 23 England caps.

"In his time with us, he certainly became a favourite with the fans for his no-nonsense approach to the game and his infectious personality," United manager Alex Ferguson said in a statement on his club's website (manutd.com).

"It's always the hardest of decisions to let loyal servants go. But life moves on and, unquestionably, Wes will get the chance to make a real contribution to Steve Bruce's Sunderland and I'm delighted to be passing him into such good hands." – Reuters

Monty still unhappy after a 67 at Scottish Open

INVERNESS, July 7 – Colin Montgomerie's bid to snatch an 11th-hour British Open place next week got off to a promising start with a 67 at the Scottish Open today.

But despite being only two strokes behind the early leaders, fellow Briton Lee Westwood and Chile's Mark Tullo, he was disappointed with his five-under-par return at Castle Stuart.

An ugly bogey on the last and two dropped shots in his round cancelled out an eagle on the second, his 11th hole.

Montgomerie matched world number one Luke Donald's score, and lagged only one shot behind Swede Peter Hanson in their three-ball, but said his round had still left a bitter taste.

"Any time you play with the world number one and equal him around the course you've done OK but I should have done better," the eight-times European number one told reporters.

"When I made eagle I thought I was on to something but then I bogeyed two of the easiest holes. To miss the ninth (his 18th) fairway was a disaster. The thing's 110 yards wide. I had to hit my second shot backwards.

"I'm disappointed but then if I wasn't disappointed, I'd give up. I'm here to do well – I'm here to win."

The 48-year-old Scot needs to be the best finisher in the top five of those not already exempt for next week's British Open and was frustrated he had reduced his chances of clinching the spot and making it 22 years in succession at the major.

"It's a long time 21 years playing in the Open, a whole career, a championship I love, one I've finished second in – I want to play again, I really do."

Britain's world number two Westwood can go back to the top of the world rankings if he wins.

He leads by a stroke with Tullo from in-form South African George Coetzee and Hanson. Alongside Montgomerie in fifth, though, is Westwood's arch-rival in the rankings compatriot Donald.

Westwood is blase about going to next week's major as world number one or being favourite to win at Royal St George's.

"I wouldn't care if I was 1,000-1 to win," he said. "Or I would... I'd put a big bet on myself." – Reuters
