KISS hails Gaga, others like ‘garbage collectors’

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 09:11 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug 26 — Musicians in today's rock bands look like "garbage collectors" and the only true new star is Lady Gaga, members of the legendary heavy metal group KISS said in a chat with AFP.

"There are a lot of bands that have something. What's missing is stardom. The ability to get up on stage and rule, bigger than life," said KISS bassist and singer-songwriter Gene Simmons.

In a conversation during a promotional appearance on Tuesday for the "KISS Monster Book", the band explained their decision to record their next disc, "Monster," with analogue equipment.

They also defended the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, whose members were sentenced to prison last week in Moscow.

"There are no stars. There's no Elvis, there's no ... even Prince," said Simmons. "Stage presence — none of the bands have it, they look like garbage collectors. They look worse than the audience that comes to see them."

"There's no pride," said the 62-year-old, who is known for his own on-stage persona as "The Demon" in a band that flaunts over-the-top costumes and black-and-white make-up.

KISS's four band members spoke to reporters in The Viper Room, a renowned Hollywood bar where the actor River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993.

Dressed in black, without make-up, in silver neck chains and long hair, the creators of rock hymns like "I Wanna Rock N Roll All Night" and "I Was Made for Lovin' You" agreed the extravagant Lady Gaga stands alone among new performers.

"The only new rock star is Lady Gaga. That's it. She's a star," said Simmons, in white crocodile skin cowboy boots and a silk scarf. "There are some very, very good bands, I'm a big fan of Foo Fighters, but give me the stars."

It's not just about the show, he said. "Elvis could walk up on stage with nothing. But charisma. Image. Mystique."

Paul Stanley, the group's star and lead vocalist, went further.

"Musicians who look like the delivery boy ... don't realise that there's more. When big bands go on stage, they deliver their goods," he said.

"That's why we've been around 40 years, because people know when they come to see us, they're going to get their money's worth and they're going to be entertained. We are proud to be entertainers and a hell of a rock band."

Stanley, who was wearing a black jacket and checker-board shoes with silver studs, and Simmons are the last members of the original KISS, which they formed in the early 1970s.

Lead guitarist Tommy Taylor and drummer Eric Singer were brought in later as replacements after a break up in the original line-up.

Asked about the Pussy Riot furor in Russia, Simmons said they're "not a good band, but they have the right to do whatever they want to do. And it's too bad that politics gets in the way of rock bands."

Stanley said: "A strong country should never be afraid of freedom. And with freedom comes independence, a sense of independence, and many countries still want to squash that."

The band is promoting its megabook as a collector's item. A limited-edition of 1,000 copies, it is individually signed by the band's members and spans KISS's 40-year history. It includes 127 photographs, some never published before.

The affable rockers, who showed little trace of the fearsome personas they project on stage, told AFP they are recording their next album using analogue equipment, seeking beauty in imperfection.

"Monster", their 20th studio album, is scheduled to be released in October.

"All the greatest music that was ever made, was made on tape, was analogue. The problem with computers and technology is, when it's not used for enhancement, it becomes a noose around your neck," Stanley said.

"You wind up looking for perfection instead of passion. And all the music that we grew up loving — Led Zeppelin, Beatles, Stones, James Brown, Motown, you name it — none of them were perfect, and that's what made them great." — AFP/Relaxnews

Venice’s Golden Lion not a sure ticket to box office success

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:52 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, Aug 26 — The most prestigious award of the Venice film festival, whose 2012 edition begins on Wednesday, is no guarantee for box-office success.

The ten recipients of the festival's Golden Lion — from 2001 winner "Monsoon Wedding" to 2010's "Somewhere" — failed to bring in big box office money: their total earnings of US$377 million (RM1.17 billion) pale in comparison to the winners of Cannes's Palme d'Or (US$505 million) and rank just ahead of the winners of the Berlin festival's Golden Bear (US$330 million).

Among the ten films that were awarded a Golden Lion between 2001 and 2010, only six went past the threshold of US$20 million in global earnings.

The most lucrative is Ang Lee's "Secret of Brokeback Mountain", the winner in 2005, which raked in US$178 million.

Getting past the US$100 million threshold remains a rare feat for the movie world's major festival winners.

Over the past ten years, it's only been reached three times: 2002 Golden Bear winner "Spirited Away" earned US$275 million at the global box office and two Palme d'Or winners, "The Pianist" (2002) and "Fahrenheit 9/11" (2004), join this exclusive club with respective earnings of US$120 million and US$222 million.

Ang Lee's Venice "Lust, Caution", which won the coveted prize in 2007, is the second highest-grossing film among Golden Lion winners, with global earnings of US$67 million. Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler" comes in third, with US$45 million.

Alexander Sokourov's "Faust", which won last year, was not taken into account for this list since its global earnings have not been made available yet.  — AFP-Relaxnews

Robot cat Doraemon receives residency in Japan city

TOKYO, Aug 26 — Doraemon, Japan's robot cat from the future, will celebrate turning minus 100 years old by being given official residence of the city where he will be born, a city official told AFP.

The electronic blue feline, whose cartoon exploits have captivated children across Asia, is to be given a residency certificate for Kawasaki, a city near Tokyo, on September 3, exactly a century ahead of his supposed birth.

The city, in which the character's creator lived, is also home to a popular museum of all things Doraemon and plans to issue copies of the time-travelling robot cat's residency certificate to fans and visitors.

"Doraemon was created and born in Kawasaki city. In that sense, he has always been a city resident," Mayor Takao Abe told reporters, according to the online edition of the local Kanagawa Shimbun newspaper. "I hope (the residency certificate) will bring the museum closer to many people," he said.

The certificate will give Doraemon's birthday as September 3, 2112, as well as listing his likes — pastries — and his dislikes — mice.

Doraemon was sent back in time from the 22nd century by a young boy who wanted to alter his family's historical misfortune. His magic pocket provides an endless supply of fantastical gadgets that help his young friend Nobita Nobi navigate the trials of everyday life.

The character first appeared in manga strips in 1969, making the transition to small and big screen over the following decades. Doraemon remains enormously popular in Japan, serving as an instantly recognisable cultural reference across generations.

The cartoon series also has a large following in the rest of Asia, including in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea. — Afp-Relaxnews

Chick flick syndrome

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 05:29 PM PDT

AUG 26 — Did I mention I hate chick flicks? They're so full of unrealistic relationships and pretty gals and cute men who happen to be rich, romantic and understanding.

The other thing I hate about chick flicks is that they create "chick flick syndrome" in women and gullible girls.

Chick flick syndrome results in girls being alone and single because they are day-dreaming about a knight in shining armour.

How do you know you have chick flick syndrome?

Answer these questions:

  1. You believe in chance encounters with strangers (this means bumping into someone at book stores!).
  2. You have a vision of an ideal man. You have never been in a serious relationship or hardly ever.
  3. You believe you will mysteriously hit it off with him and sparks will fly, and you will get butterflies in your stomach and you will just know he's special.
  4. You believe that sometimes when you argue with a guy, the two of you will turn into a romantic pair.
  5. You believe he will woo you and do everything he can to attain you while you casually go about your business and at some point you'll fall hopelessly in love with him.
  6. You believe you don't have to lift a finger to get a man.
  7. You don't believe in being set up by a girl friend as this takes away from the "chance encounter."
  8. You don't believe in primping yourself or making an effort to look good because your two personalities will just hit it off.
  9. You don't believe in making the first move and talking to a guy you like because you think if he's interested he'll chat you up. As you can see, if you agree with the above statements, you have chick flick syndrome.
  10. You actually think some man will bump into you, say something funny that will make you say something back which will lead to more conversation and you two will hook up. It doesn't occur to those with chick flick syndrome that relationships take work, will often hit many bumps and will usually go through tests that may strengthen or break it.

The problem I have with these syndromes is that it leaves nice girls alone and single, wondering why romance doesn't come their way — then they conveniently blame God and say that God arranges everything.

I'm sorry, but God is busy trying to hook you up with your gal pal's friends — if only you would quit expecting some charming guy who fits your idea of the ideal man to come rescue you from a locked tower.

Chance encounters

The girls with chick flick syndrome hang out with their girl friends, always go to the same places and actually think someone who bumps into them will ask them for their number.

I'm sorry, but this is Malaysia, not the US. Men don't ask for a girl's number if they bump into you at the book store. Get real!

Ideal man

Sure it's good to have a certain degree of expectation. But then you have unrealistic expectations like he has to be cute with boy band looks, earns a decent income with a professional job, be a jock and be intelligent as well. News alert – those guys only exist in the movies. Jocks may not be intellectuals and likewise smarts ones aren't necessarily good looking.

Research have proven that good looking people are more confident but average looking people tend to have a more vibrant personality as they have to work harder to get friends through their humour, wit or intelligence while good looking people never have to work hard to attract attention.

Be realistic about men and learn to compromise. Real relationships are about two people willing to set aside their differences for the love of each other. No man will be perfect so stop waiting for the perfect hero.

Self primping

A lot of staunch chick flick syndrome girls do the opposite. They primp themselves and then expect some stranger to walk up to them and declare their interest in them. That's still tolerable.

It's the ones that don't primp themselves yet expect some stranger to suddenly fall in love with them and ask for their number that gets to me.

Sure you should just be yourself. And if you're a T-shirt and sports shoes kinda gal, don't change your personal style for a man. But your dressing tells people what kind of person you are. And if you don't care about making a good impression, don't be surprised if people aren't impressed.

If you are comfortable looking like a tomboy, don't get surprised that people treat you like one. If you dress like a nun, don't be surprised if men think you steer clear of men (and then they stay clear of you) unless they are looking for a very modest kinda girl.

More importantly, I don't get the women who choose to dress down (love me for my personality kinda girl) who then ONLY want cute guys. Ladies, reality check — a lot of good looking people have the option of attractive people flocking to them. Also, in relationships — it's very important that personalities and values match.

So if the men take good care in personal grooming and bother to look good, then they probably expect their women to care about their appearances too. How can you have double standards with yourself and your men? Don't complain if the good looking ones don't look at you if your personal grooming isn't up to par as it's part of a personality clash.

Cute/dashing hero syndrome

I understand that physical attraction is important. But hello, how shallow can you get? Obviously been watching too many chick flicks. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Once you know him, you'll be able to see attractive qualities in him.

That scar on his face may represent that time in the army when he rescued someone. That balding patch may represent him taking care of his cancer ridden mother. That extra pound around his waist might represent his long hard battle to overcome a genetic predisposition to being obese, which he managed to trim to only a few extra pounds.

Stop being shallow and look within. Get to know someone before deciding whether you'll marry the guy.

You believe you don't have to lift a finger to get a man

Sorry girls. But men have their moods and emotions too. Sometimes, he may get jealous. And you may need to coax him. You need to talk and communicate and set boundaries. It doesn't mean that you dress in short skirts to get his attention, but if you're sloppy and he's not, don't be surprised if he walks out.

The key is mutual commitment. He's not gonna chase you unless you are able to meet him halfway. Expecting him to bend to your ideal man/date/relationship is just courting disaster.

And that's just some of the issues I have against chick flick syndrome; compressed into a few points. There is hope however. If you have this syndrome — here is the remedy:

  1. Meet more guys — understand them for who they are, the feelings, their reasons for their actions, etc.
  2. Date more — have casual dates with zero expectations. Don't pre-judge a guy.
  3. Make the first move — say hello to someone you like, or give him the look. This opens up possibilities. That's not saying you have to chase him.

Well, I hope you gals with chick flick syndrome quit watching chick flicks. Or at least understand that you're suffering from this syndrome and try to watch the flicks without getting brainwashed by Hollywood.

Rediscovering children’s books

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 05:04 PM PDT

Hours of reading pleasure. Best of all, I get to share these with my son.

AUG 26 — Ballooning up two dress sizes and having to wear my eight-month-old in a carrier everywhere I go, clothes shopping has lost its shine for me (I pulled a muscle trying not to fall over while trying on a pair of shorts in a too-small dressing room. That was it.)

What was initially relief for my husband has now shifted to new-found horror as he learns, on a weekly basis, that book buying is far more damaging to his bank account.

My latest buying streak began with the Hong Kong Book Fair in July. As Typhoon Vicente whipped through the city tearing up trees, I whipped out my credit card, almost tearing with joy.

This expedition was followed by weekly trips to the book shop with my children, which has been our routine since the summer holidays began in late July.

Then there was Taobao. I may be illiterate but thanks to my brother-in-law and his too-kind colleague, I shopped up a storm on China's answer to Amazon.com and e-Bay. Only I spent a fraction (about a third) of what I do in Hong Kong.

I can't be sure how Taobao sellers are able to price children's books (or any item they sell for that matter) at such dirt cheap prices. Some books had minor defects, others may have been cancelled orders or stock over runs. I can only hope there were no copyright infringements.

For that one special cake decorating book, I decided to order from The Book Depository (www.bookdepository.com), which is based in England. Although it offers free shipping, it was a painful 24 pounds (RM118). Never mind that I will unlikely create anything from that book; it is purely for my viewing pleasure and I wanted a genuine, defect-free copy. I think this is what economists term snob appeal.

I have deviated from my reason for writing this week's column. I want to talk about the appeal of children's books.

I have been collecting these on and off for years, picking up a copy that caught my eye here and there. This year, however, perhaps spurred by the book fair, I have been on a rampage.

The fair opened my eyes to less-seen books, predominantly older titles that have seen recent printing. These include Madeline (Ludwig Bemelmans, 1939), Inch by Inch (Leo Lionni, 1960) and The Tiger Who Came to Tea (Judith Kerr, 1973).

A die-cut image from Simms Taback's Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

I have also come to enjoy well-illustrated books. I enjoyed Erin Stead's woodblock print and pencil illustrations in A Sick Day for Amos McGee (written by Philip Stead); adored the die-cut holes that help transform an overcoat into a button in Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback.

With each book I open I rediscover the simple pleasure of reading. I take in the new book smell, the smooth, crease-free pages, the rich colours, the short, simple stories (yet incredibly difficult to create).

I pick these books for myself and love sharing them with my four-year-old son whose hour-long pre-bedtime ritual involves us reading two books with him.

His favourites are the wordless books. Although he can read, he seems to enjoy creating his own words as he narrates the story based on the pictures.

His top "read/ view" as I type this is Zoom by Istvan Banyai. Starting with what looks like a portion of a star-shaped pizza, the next page reveals it is in fact the comb on a cockerel's head. Zooming out with each page, we discover that the cockerel is being watched by children inside a farm house; the farm house is in fact a toy farm a child is playing with; and this in turn is a picture in a toy magazine read by a boy on a ship's deck. Genius.

The other wordless wonders (in my opinion) are Chalk by Bill Thomson, The Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney and Flotsam by David Wiesner.

In just over a month I have purchased 37 books. Now they sit in piles on the floor as I scratch my head about where to put them in my shoe-box apartment. My love affair is in full-swing.

New kid on the block

A selection of award-winning children's books at Eslite.

The latest book store opening in Causeway Bay has, unsurprisingly, resulted in further spending. Eslite Bookstore, a Taiwanese import and now the the largest bookstore chain in Hong Kong, has been the cause of more snaking queues in this queue-friendly city.

A selection of award-winning children's books at Eslite.

While looking at the floor directory in Hysan Place, the new mall where Eslite is home to, I overheard two Cantonese-speaking men discussing how Eslite should be pronounced in English. "E-C Lite," said one. "I think it's S-Lite," said the other.

Eslite is old French for elite and perhaps picking up on that, commentators have observed that the stylish store is for those who want to be seen as educated and well-read.

Eslite has been the talk of the town as folks rushed to check out the 41,000 square feet store occupying three floors. It is the first 24-hour bookstore here (although for now it is only opened round the clock from Thursdays to Saturdays) which has seen shoppers head there when the malls shut at 10pm.

I found Eslite too crowded for my liking on a Thursday afternoon and saw none of the "comfortable seating" bloggers raved about.

The children's section, however, held its own purely for displaying titles different from main players Dymocks, Page One, Bookazine and Commercial Press.

I give it a thumbs up for offering up a selection of popular titles in both English and Chinese (traditional) such as Eric Carle's Brown Bear.

Bookworms have much to look forward to as thanks to Eslite's entry into the market, local competitors are stepping up their game. The Causeway Bay branch of The Commercial Press, situated across the road from Eslite, is reported to have expanded its English section.

Chicken Soup for the Soul’ series to launch food line

LOS ANGELES, Aug 26 — The creators of Chicken Soup for the Soul, the popular life improvement book series, is releasing a line of comfort foods in the US that will — of course — include the broken heart's penicillin: chicken soup.

Set to launch in 2013, the food range will debut with a line of seven soups, led by chicken soup with egg noodles and vegetables.

Other soups to follow will include creamy tomato, mushroom barley, squash, sweet corn, chipotle and black bean, all packaged in homey mason jars.

The segway into the food industry is pitched on the premise of the feel-good series that features a collection of short stories, anecdotes and motivational essays meant to serve as a tonic for the downtrodden and broken-hearted.

By 2014, the entire food range will include more than 100 comfort foods like pot pies, casseroles and stews, in addition to gravies and broths to help shorten meal times.

With more than 100 million copies in print in 54 languages and 100 countries, the book series is also widely recognised outside the US where it originated in 1993.

It's not the first time books and food have intersected. In advance of director Peter Jackson's movie The Hobbit, for example, writers have been jotting down hobbit recipes into cookbooks.

JRR Tolkien scholar Astrid Tuttle Winegar, for instance, is said to be releasing a book called A Hobbits's Cookbook: Eleventy-one Sweets, Snacks, And Savories Inspired by Middle-Earth, while California-based cookbook writer Georgeanne Brennan is also set to release The Unofficial Hobbit Cookbook in future.

Meanwhile, if you need a little pick-me-up, consider popping a few berries, chocolate or sipping on tea, which were recently found to have the same properties as anti-depressants. — Afp-Relaxnews

Britain’s top 10 restaurants revealed

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 02:39 AM PDT

Good Food Guide 2013. — AFP-Relaxnews pic

LONDON, Aug 25 — The British version of the Michelin guide has crowned celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck the best restaurant in the UK for the fifth year in a row.

In advance of The Good Food Guide's publication September 3, editors released the top 10 restaurants across the UK for 2013, giving Blumenthal's famous eatery in Bray, Berkshire and L'Enclume in Cumbria a rare score of 10.

L'Enclume's "hallowed" rating – the only other restaurant to nab the highest score this year – makes it a formidable rival for The Fat Duck, noted the guide's editor-in-chief Elizabeth Carter in a statement.

"L'Enclume is mind-blowing," she said. "It's a world-class destination in harmony with its local community, serving food that is hard-wired to the Cumbrian soil. [Chef Simon] Rogan creates miracles from nature; he cooks what the land can provide – nothing more, nothing less. Eating at L'Enclume is a unique, almost one-to-one experience."

While a 9 denotes "cooking that has reached a pinnacle of achievement, making it a hugely memorable experience for the diner," a 10 is "extremely rare" and denotes consistent perfection, according to the guide.

Usual suspects

The results come just as the London Olympic Games wind down, and the city prepares for a second wave of tourists for the Paralymic Games August 29.

The list is full of some of the usual suspects including Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottingham, which scored the third spot, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay at the No. 4 position, and other popular dining destinations like Pollen Street Social, Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons and Hibiscus.

The Ledbury also broke into the top 10 list for the first time.

Meanwhile, on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, The Fat Duck ranks 13, while Blumenthal's second restaurant Dinner at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London ranks 9th in the world.

Inspectors for The Good Food Guide include ex-restaurateurs, chefs, writers and food critics.

Beauty products go green!

Posted: 24 Aug 2012 10:13 PM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR, August 25 — The term "natural beauty" takes on a whole new meaning when you look at the number of beauty products that have gone the "natural" or "green" route.

In Malaysia, this trend is evident with the arrival of brands like Melvita, L'erbolario and Neil's Yard Remedies.

Fans of these brands have been singing praises about these must-buy eco-friendly products since forever, of course.

L'erbolario offers a wide variety of products based on essential oils.

Advanced Apotheke brought in Italian brand L'erbolario to our shores back in November 2010, opening their first outlet at Bangsar Shopping Centre. There are outlets now at KLCC and One Utama as well. The company also brought in Neal's Yard Remedies, Les Fleurs Bach and Penhaligon's.

"With L'erbolario, we are focused on apothecary-based products which are different from the ones already in the market. Our vision and aim is to have something special, niche; something people do not have.

"We have over 550 items in our shop, comprising of bath and body products, complete sun range and 45 different lines. All of our products are essential oil-based, so each range will have a unique sense and smell," said MJ Lee, founder of Advanced Apotheke.

Lee believes in family-run businesses because of the quality of artisanal business. He himself is a firm believer in pampering and for him, the only time to relax the mind is when one take's a shower or a bath because the flow of the water and herbal products heightens the senses. Relaxing the body is when someone sleeps, he said.

L'erbolario already has many fans, of which 80 per cent are Malaysians. The positive feedback and sold-out products is what encouraged Advanced Apotheke to open in strategic locations. The next L'erbolario store will be in Penang, and you can find Neal's Yard Remedies, and Penhaligon's in Isetan. Les Fleurs Bach products can also be found in the L'erbolario store in Bangsar Shopping Centre.

With a background in engineering, Lee decided to open Advanced Apotheke because he loves bath and body products and is interested in apothecary. Natural products is a growing market in Malaysia.

The best-selling range in L'erbolario is the Argan oil range. Argan oil, also known as Moroccan oil, is produced from the kernels of the argan tree. It has higher Vitamin E content than other oils, and is said to heal scars, slow ageing and moisturise dry skin.

Consumers who are loyal followers of L'occitane may have heard of their sister company, Melvita, which opened its first store in KLCC last October. It has since expanded, with a store in Midvalley Megamall and another one in One Utama. The French brand offers Ecocert products with prices similar to L'occitane's.

The Frankincense range from Neal' Yard Remedies.

Melvita's face range is very popular among Malaysians, according to a salesperson who joined Melvita when it first launched in Kuala Lumpur. There are a number of bestsellers in Melvita Malaysia and after trying out the face range, most of Melvita's customers are drawn to the beauty oils and floral water, two of the best-selling ranges at the store.

Smelling absolutely heavenly with hydrating and refreshing properties, the floral water is to be used after shower, right before applying any body cream. It also can be used throughout the day, whenever your skin feels dehydrated or oily.

Argan oil is one of the most precious oils in the world!

Light and all-natural, you can just bring the floral water wherever you go and it is suitable for both the face and body. The Melvita Malaysia stores also carry the men's and baby range. Another interesting product that you will find at Melvita is the toothpaste that is made of ingredients such as mint, strawberries and star anise.

Melvita's beauty oils are plant-based ranging from Argan Oil to Rose Hip Oil and some can even be applied on hair. From the website (www.melvita.com.my), you can find the products available in the country, together with descriptions and details.

Also new on the organic beauty radar is Neal's Yard Remedies which opened its first outlet in Isetan, KLCC this year. With more than 30 years of apothecary experience, using internationally certified organic ingredients, the UK-based brand is gaining popularity among Malaysians.

Currently, Neal's Yard Remedies carries the face, body, hair, men's, mother and baby and aromatherapy range locally. Made from essential oils, the products are in blue glass bottles and have a shorter shelf life than other chemical-based products.

There is strawberry-flavoured toothpaste for kids at Melvita.

The reason why it is so is because organic ingredients are natural and do not have preservatives -- using it after more than six or 12 months may not give you the desired results. Also, light can damage the properties in the organic ingredients, hence blue glass bottles are used.

For the face range, there are about five to six essential oil types. These are selected based on our hot and humid climate -- if the product is too rich, it might cause blemishes. Priced roughly around RM100 to RM200 plus, Neal's Yard Remedies is affordably-priced if you compare it to other high-end chemical-based skincare.

According to a salesperson at Neal's Yard Remedies, you will only see the results of the product after a certain time. Other products show visible results instantly because of the chemicals which may be harmful to our body in the long run.

At Neal's Yard Remedies KLCC, the Rejuvenating Frankincense range, an anti-ageing line that purportedly regenerates the skin, hydrating and healing it in the process is the most popular.

Pig parasite may help treat autoimmune disorders

BOSTON, Aug 25 — If you had a chronic and potentially debilitating condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease, and swallowing the eggs of a pig parasite could help, would you do it?

The team at Coronado Biosciences Inc is betting you would.

The Burlington, Massachusetts, company is developing what it hopes will be the first in a new class of treatments for autoimmune conditions. Each dose of the drug consists of thousands of microscopic parasite eggs, culled from pig faeces, suspended in a tablespoon of saline solution to be swallowed.

In a pig, the eggs would grow into mature whipworms and reproduce, without harming their host. In humans, the same eggs barely survive two weeks. Yet in that short period they appear to modulate a patient's immune system and prevent it from attacking the body's own tissues and organs.

" It has the potential not only to be a drug but to provide insight into the cause of these diseases," said Dr Joel Weinstock, chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at Tufts-New England Medical Centre in Boston and an adviser to Coronado.

The company is preparing to enrol 220 patients with Crohn's disease in a midstage clinical trial. Participants will receive either a dose with 7,500 eggs from a pig whipworm or a placebo once every two weeks for 12 weeks.

Coronado's partner, German drugmaker Dr. Falk Pharma GmbH, is conducting a midstage trial of the drug, known as trichuris suis ova (TSO), in Europe. The two companies plan to share data when filing for marketing approval in 2016 or 2017.

Tiny Coronado, with a market value of nearly US$139 million, went public on the Nasdaq stock exchange last December. If the company, which also has an early-stage cancer drug in development, succeeds with TSO, it will compete against multibillion-dollar drugs from Amgen Inc and Abbott Laboratories.

Sales of autoimmune disease drugs are expected to grow in the mid-single-digit percentages through 2016, from US$34 billion (RM105 billion) in 2010, according to market research firm BCC Research.

As many as 700,000 Americans suffer from Crohn's disease, a bowel disorder. An estimated 50 million Americans have rheumatoid arthritis and as many as 7.5 million suffer from psoriasis.

Hygiene hypothesis

The technology behind Coronado's product was developed by Weinstock and researchers at the University of Iowa, where Weinstock was affiliated before Tufts. It is based on the "hygiene hypothesis," which holds that many developed countries have, in some ways, become too clean for their own good.

Millions of organisms, including viruses, bacteria and worms, enter the body through contact with dirt. Researchers believe many of these organisms are needed to train the body's immune system to recognize and fight disease.

"Microbes have adapted to us, and us to them, and we use them to stimulate our immune system," said Dennis Kasper, a professor of medicine, microbiology and immunobiology at Harvard Medical School, who is not involved with Coronado's product.

Today in many parts of the world these organisms are kept at bay with an array of antibacterial soaps, detergents and sanitizing gels.

Studies have shown that the incidence of autoimmune disease tends to be highest in the developed world, and is highest there among upper-income groups. Weinstock and others hypothesize that the elimination of certain intestinal parasites may have led to the loss in some individuals of a key mechanism for modulating the immune system.

Standard treatments for autoimmune disorders include injectable drugs that block a protein known as tumor necrosis factor. They include Amgen's Enbrel and Abbott's Humira. These depress the immune system and send its army of infection-fighting cells back to their barracks.

They also raise the risk of serious infection, including tuberculosis, and some types of cancer. Coronado's chief executive officer, Bobby Sandage Jr., says that is one reason why patients with serious conditions would choose the company's drug despite its provenance.

"With the pig whipworm, there is no permanent infection, no real possible side effects," he said.

Sandage said about a third of patients experience some gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhoea or cramping, after the first or second dose, though the symptoms typically go away after a day or two. He said patients need to stay on the drug indefinitely to keep symptoms at bay.

"It really does take a bit of getting used to. But once you talk to patients and they understand the theory, they accept it. We have had no trouble recruiting," said Dr. John Fleming, a professor of neurology at the University of Wisconsin who is testing the drug in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Others are sceptical about the drug's chances of gaining broad acceptance.

"This is not like taking a pill or even an injectable," said Steve Brozak, an analyst at WBB Securities who follows the biotechnology sector. "Here you are taking parasites that live in a pig's intestine, putting them into little vials and saying, 'Bottoms up!'"

Comfortable coexistence

Humans and their parasites have evolved in tandem for millennia. Most parasites have found ways to feed off humans without killing them, and some have become important for health.

A parasite that lives comfortably in humans may not be able to survive in another species, and vice versa. For the purpose of creating a drug, that is a good thing.

"What we know from the pig whipworm is that when you give it to people, it is destroyed in the gut," said Fleming. "It doesn't come out, so you have to keep giving it."

Initial results from early trials of the drug in patients with multiple sclerosis are promising, he said, though much more study will be needed to prove efficacy.

"I'm pretty convinced about the safety," he said.

Coronado has rights to the drug for all autoimmune conditions in North America, South America and Japan. Dr. Falk holds the rights to market the drug for gastrointestinal disorders in Europe.

By next summer, 250 people in the Phase 2 Falk study will have taken the drug for three months, and data is expected to be released around the same time. Results from Coronado's study should be released in the second half of next year.

Approval from regulators could involve an unusual set of hurdles, as there is little precedent for such a product. Sandage said conversations with the US Food and Drug Administration and European regulators are going well.

"They are very well aware of what the product is, and we have been through a lot of stuff with them and they seem very happy so far," he said.

New systems have had to be introduced to clean the eggs. Traditional biologic drugs are purified using high heat or radiation, but Coronado can't do that: It needs the eggs to stay alive. So the company uses an acid wash, which the eggs can withstand because they have evolved to pass through the stomach acid of their host.

"A lot of time was spent figuring out purification techniques," Sandage said. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, Aug 25 — Katie Holmes walked away without a payment or alimony in her divorce with Tom Cruise, but the couple's six-year-old daughter, Suri, stands to receive US$400,000 (RM1.2 million) annually in child support until she turns 18, celebrity website TMZ.com reported yesterday.

Citing sources familiar with court documents filed by the former couple, whose divorce was finalized earlier this week, TMZ said the "TomKat" pre-nuptial agreement blocked Holmes from receiving any portion of the 50-year-old actor's US$250 million fortune.

But Cruise will make child-support payments over the next 12 years that add up to US$4.8 million, or $33,333.33 a month. TMZ also reported that Cruise must pay Suri's medical, education and extracurricular expenses.

Cruise's attorney declined to comment on the report, and a lawyer for Holmes did not respond to Reuters' request for confirmation.

Holmes, 33, surprised Cruise in late June when she filed for divorce from the "Mission: Impossible" star after a nearly six-year marriage. Cruise was in Iceland shooting a movie at the time.

The divorce, which took less than two weeks to settle, captivated the world and prompted questions about whether Suri will be raised in the Church of Scientology, with which her father has long been closely associated. — Reuters

Gus Van Sant's upcoming film penned by Matt Damon to release just in time for 2013 Oscars

LOS ANGELES, Aug 25 — With a launch date set for December 28, Gus Van Sant's Promised Land is in the race for the 2013 Academy Awards.

The film's early launch in New York and Los Angeles will make it eligible for the 85th Academy Awards, scheduled for February 24, 2013.

Scripted by Matt Damon (who also performs in it), the film will subsequently launch across the US in January 2013.

It's the fourth time Gus Van Sant (picture) directs Matt Damon, after Good Will Hunting, Finding Forrester and Gerry. The director accepted to take on the actor's script, although Damon had originally planned to direct it himself. A busy schedule conflicting with the time constraints of pre-production pushed the actor to send the script to his friend.

Promised Land is an anti-fracking movie about a salesman whose life takes a new turn when he moves to a small town. Matt Damon co-wrote the script with John Krasinski (The Office). — AFP-Relaxnews
