Djokovic outplays Nadal to win Wimbledon title Posted: 03 Jul 2011 08:54 AM PDT LONDON, July 3  — Novak Djokovic outplayed Rafa Nadal to win the Wimbledon title with an emphatic 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory in the final today. The Serbian second seed saw off the top seed and defending champion to claim his first Wimbledon crown and confirm his status as the new world No. 1. The first set went with serve until Djokovic pounced in the 10th game to break Nadal and he played inspired tennis to romp through the second set in 33 minutes and take complete control of the match. Lorenzo reels in Stoner to win Italian MotoGP Posted: 03 Jul 2011 08:26 AM PDT MILAN, July 3 — World champion Jorge Lorenzo snatched the Italian MotoGP from Casey Stoner today to close the gap on the current championship leader. Yamaha rider Lorenzo overtook the Australian six laps from the end at the Mugello circuit to claim his second win of the season, having previously won at Jerez. The two legendary guitarists kicked off Friday night's concert with "The Life Divine" and closed with "A Love Supreme", both tracks from their 1973 gold album "Love, Devotion and Surrender". Their acoustic version of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" was a highlight of a nostalgic concert at Montreux, one of Europe's most prestigious summer jazz festivals, which runs until July 16. "Coltrane, Dylan, Zeppelin — we grew up with all of them. The next one is a real favourite of mine from the Mahavishnu Orchestra," said McLaughlin, introducing "The Creator has a Master Plan" from his pioneering fusion band. Cindy Blackman, Santana's second wife, joined on drums in a powerful rendition of "Vuelta Abajo," a tribute to the late American jazz drummer Williams who played with Miles Davis and McLaughlin. "These tunes go back 150 years. Any more old hippies out there?" quipped the silver-haired McLaughlin, now 69. "It was a very special music that we played at that time. Cindy has taken the tradition of Tony Williams and pushed it further." After falling off its pace Thursday, the US$200 million action film is back on track to meet pre-release projections that had the movie taking in about US$180 million domestically in its first 6-1/2 days of release. Hemingway lives on in Cuba Posted: 02 Jul 2011 10:53 PM PDT A sculpture of Hemingway at the Floridita bar in Havana. — AFP/Relaxnews file pic HAVANA, July 3 — A daiquiri at the Floridita, a mojito at the Bodeguita del Medio and an afternoon at Finca Vigia is the obligatory ritual for enthusiasts arriving in Cuba to honour the 50th anniversary of American writer Ernest Hemingway's death. In Cuba, devotees can walk in the footsteps of the Nobel Prize-winning author at destinations dedicated to Hemingway's life on the island. In Old Havana, the Hotel Ambos Mundos offers a tour of the room where Hemingway spent the first months of his 21 years in Cuba, between 1939 and 1960. In the centre of the small room, a typewriter sits as a throne while a sheet of white paper rests in the carriage. The writer's glasses and a drawing pencil wait on the table and a fisherman's vest and bullfighters jacket hang in the dresser. Books and magazines rest on the bed. "In America, Hemingway is known through his books, through libraries and museums, but in Cuba there is an oral tradition about his life. He belongs to the Cuban scene. To understand him, you have to come to Havana," said Jenny Phillips, the granddaughter of Hemingway's editor. For this young woman, giving a conference at the Hotel Ambos Mundos for the 50th anniversary of Hemingway's death, the suicide of the writer on July 2, 1961 at his home in Ketchum, Idaho left no doubt he was preoccupied with death and, in a way, fated to commit suicide after he fell ill. "I'm from the town where Hemingway was born (Oak Park, near Chicago). It's very emotional to be here, in Havana, where he spent so many of these important years in his life," Nancy Sindecar, an expert on Hemingway, told AFP after the inevitable mojito at the Bodeguita del Medio. In this small bar near the cathedral of Havana, Reinaldo Lima, also known as "Rey" (king), pours all his 26 years of experience into Cuba's classic cocktail: lime, mint, sugar, sparkling water and, of course, rum. "The best in all of Cuba," said Rey, placing down the drink without skipping a beat. It's a symbol of friendship between our two people," added the bartender. To the side of the bar is a painting that depicts the author clinking glasses with Cuban poet Nicolas Guillen, in front of flags from the United States and Cuba, who broke diplomatic ties in 1961. A little further into Old Havana, the Floridita honors the writer with a statue of Hemingway leaning on the bar where a daiquiri special is dedicated to him: no sugar, but double the rum. "My daiquiri at the Floridita, my mojito at the Bodeguita," wrote Hemingway who lived some 30km from the bars in his home, Finca Vigia, a colonial structure in the tropical jungle west of Havana. Offered to Cuba by his widow Mary Welsh, today the home is a small Hemingway museum where furniture, books, hunting trophies, clothing and his fishing boat, El Pilar, are all available for viewing. Not far from Finca, the Barlovento Marina served as a frequent point of departure for the novelist's many fishing expeditions. It was here, in May of 1960, where Hemingway met a young Fidel Castro, who had just come to power in Cuba. Renamed Hemingway Marina, the port is now a base for big game fishing competitions. Hemingway also lives on at Cojimar, a small fishing port on the other side of Havana where Gregorio Fuentes, Hemingway's inspiration for "The Old Man and the Sea," lived. The novel earned Hemingway a Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and was cited when he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. Ill and under pressure from the American authorities, who looked poorly on his stay in Cuba, Hemingway left the island on July 25 1960, less than a year before he blew his brains out with a shotgun — a fact many here still find hard to digest. "He is not dead," insisted Ada Rosa Alfonso, the director of Finca. "In Cuba, he is always alive. Indonesia’s ‘paradise lost’ opens up to intrepid tourists Posted: 02 Jul 2011 09:27 PM PDT Papuan tribesmen ride a ceremonial boat during the Lake Sentani festival. — AFP/Relaxnews file pic SENTANI, July 3 — For decades, the only foreign visitors to venture into Papua were gold-diggers, anthropologists, missionaries and soldiers fighting imperial wars. But the vast, western half of New Guinea island is slowly opening its doors to tourists as a "hidden paradise", a land of ancient tribal cultures, glittering reefs, soaring glaciers and teeming wildlife. Recreational travellers are still few, at most a few thousand a year; people like Sarah Gabel, a 29-year-old American who says she is "captivated by people who live in harmony with nature". That's what she found in the Baliem valley, the long-isolated home of the Dani tribe high in the Papuan central highlands, outside the town of Wamena. "I made a one-week trek. I crossed rivers in the wild, slept in huts and met semi-naked men hunting wild boars with arrows," she said. This kind of "ethnic tourism" has become the main market for New Guinea, the largest island in Asia, where a thousand indigenous tribes are divided between the independent state of Papua New Guinea to the east and the Indonesian-controlled provinces of Papua and West Papua to the west. "The clients come mostly from Europe and the US. They don't look for five-star hotels but want to discover unknown territories and authenticity," explained Iwanta Perangin-Angin, whose agency, Papua Adventure, offers stays in Baliem. Packed with exotic wildlife, Papua also attracts nature buffs and ornithologists in search of birds of paradise and cockatoos. Environment group WWF this week announced the discovery of more than 1,000 new species on New Guinea, including a frog with fangs and a round-headed dolphin. The Raja Ampat marine park has also earned a reputation as a diving mecca, with more and more liveaboard boats offering extended voyages around the area's dozens of pristine reefs. "Papua is a hidden paradise. It's a unique destination with a lot to offer, from wild beaches to high mountains and deep jungle, with a strong culture and beautiful art," Trisakti University Institute of Tourism Professor Azril Azahari said. "It's a niche market because it's very expensive and visitors need to be in good shape to support the climate, the hilly landscape and the very basic transport." And then there's the political situation. Indonesian troops are accused of widespread human rights abuses against indigenous tribes which have been waging a low-level separatist war since the 1960s, often armed with little more than slings and arrows. Foreign journalists and aid workers are barred from visiting the resource-rich provinces of Papua to report on the rebellion. "The political situation has been quiet for some time but Papua is still seen abroad as an unsafe destination. The government has to do something to change this reputation," Azahari said. "It is essential to develop grassroots, community-based tourism which benefits local people and increases their incomes. The future doesn't lie with luxury resorts." Others warn against the worst outcomes of "ethnic tourism", such as promoting tribal people as "primitive" when they are not. This is already happening in the form of reconstructions of tribal wars. When tourists arrive, the Dani men take off their shorts and T-shirts, paint their bodies and attach traditional penis gourds known as "kotekas". "Papuans are very proud of their traditions but they are weakened by the modern world," said Yotam Yorgen Fonataba, organiser of an annual cultural festival at Sentani Lake, near the Papuan provincial capital of Jayapura. "I'm still optimistic our culture is strong and we want to protect it. For this, we need to show the world our creativity." Launched four years ago, the festival brings together thousands of people from 24 communities scattered around the huge lake. To the rhythm of traditional drums known as "tibas", warriors sing haunting tribal songs while dancers, clad in richly colored costumes, sway on boats that glide across the still lake. A student choir sings a song which goes: "I am Papuan, I have dark skin, I have curly hair. Technology and protest Posted: 02 Jul 2011 05:10 PM PDT JULY 3 — To an observer of the increasingly charged political rhetoric in the country, the lack of political acumen on display by the ruling coalition vis- à-vis the Bersih 2.0 rally is truly astonishing. If there is one thing to be learned from the Arab Spring, it is that draconian measures against protesters give more impetus and motivation to their cause. It is a different paradigm from the past where in the absence of alternative media, divide and rule was a very successful strategy. The larger question, of course, is what the powers that be are so afraid of? The answer to a great extent has to do with the current power of technology. Yes, technology.  For instance, consider the differences between, say, the online Curi Curi Wang Malaysia protest and the Bersih 2.0 rally. Firstly, it seems odd that a street protest (Bersih 2.0) sounds like an online protest while an online protest (Curi Curi Wang Malaysia) sounds like a street demonstration. In the Malaysian contest, both forms of protest used to pressure authority structures to change current policy are somewhat new. The former is a purely online protest leveraging social networking technology to register protest which goes viral very quickly and after achieving its immediate objective in terms of followers and then tends to lose steam equally quickly. The latter though leverages the power of visual technology (cameras, news coverage, video clips for online dissemination) to create memorable imagery in order to garner longer lasting support. While technology has played a crucial part in allowing both forms of protest to become viable, intuitively we understand that Bersih 2.0 poses a greater danger to the status quo than Curi Curi Wang Malaysia. Online protests are by and large due to their nature less threatening as they offer a safe way to register protest without any of the risks of arrest or physical harm. The lack of effort required (clicking on a like button) creates the perception that it can be ignored. But when people are willing to take much greater effort and risk to register their protest, as in the case of the Bersih 2.0 rally, we know that their courage and belief in their cause is also much greater. Also, technology allows street rallies to make for compelling viewing instantaneously, whether on television or online. The power of street protests comes from the visual evidence of the protester's commitment to a cause, Tahrir Square being a prime example. Which is why the wholesale banning of anything associated with Bersih 2.0 comes as a surprise. (Ed's note: Bersih 2.0 as a movement was banned yesterday.) While raising the costs and risks associated with participation will hardly deter the committed, it will surely enhance the watchability of the event, and subsequently create a level of admiration and sympathy among bystanders and fence sitters. Add to this the ostensibly non-partisan nature of the cause (free and fair elections) and the government's heavy-handed approach runs the risk of actually worsening its popular standing. A smarter strategy would be to use this understanding to minimise the impact on the voting population by turning the rally into as much of a non-event as possible. We all know that news cycles are limited and there is a preponderance of causes around the world. An unopposed peaceful rally for a couple of hours has potentially much less play as a news story than one full of arrests, roadblocks, confiscated T-shirts and dire warnings of violence. As it stands now though, Bersih 2.0 has the potential to actually become what the ruling coalition fears the most; a powerful show of anger by seemingly ordinary Malaysians which becomes a catalyst to convert the fence-sitting voter to an opposition supporter. Dia juga menerima isyarat berupa amaran dari polis jika bertegas untuk meneruskan juga rancangan turun padang itu. Macam-macam tafsiran boleh dibuat dari isyarat polis itu, seperti suasana menuju kearah negara polis atau polis bertindak berlebihan atas nama menjaga keselamatan. Apa pun polis adalah bertanggungjawab menjamin keselamatan dan ketenteraman awam. Apa pun tindakan polis adalah dalam lengkongan peruntukan undang-undang tidak kira apa jua bentuk undang-undang itu disenangi oleh keadilan atau sebaliknya. Isyarat itu dapat diketahui dari siapa, iaitu dari polis. Maka ada akauntibilinya yang boleh didebatkan. Ada pun SMS ancaman terhadap peguam Ambiaga dan beberapa lagi dari siapa? Belum dan tiada dapat dikesan pengirimnya. Hanya bergantung kepada kecekapan polis bagi mengesannya. Dan tentulah ia satu lagi ujian kepada kecekapan polis kita dan menambah lagi kerja polis. Apa pun ia adalah reaksi dari mereka yang tidak senang dengan hasil positif gerakan turun padang itu. Objektif Bersih adalah ditujukan kepada SPR, kepada kerajaan, kepada UMNO dan kepada Perdana Menteri Najib. Ia menuntut supaya dilakukan reformasi terhadap perjalanan pilihan raya supaya ia telus, bersih dan adil. Semua reaksi yang tidak seronok dengan cadangan rapat turun padang Bersih itu adalah bagi membela SPR, membela kerajaan, membela UMNO dan membela Perdana Menteri Najib. Kejayaan Bersih itu nanti sudah tentu menguji wibawa dan nasib Perdana Menteri Najib. Adalah biasa apabila ada aksi, nescaya adalah reaksi. Pengirim SMS sama ada bertujuan main-main atau bersungguh, tetapi ia dilihat serius. Sama ada ia dibuat oleh orang gila atau penyokong tegar UMNO atau orang bebas yang tidak mahu kekacauan, maka anggapan mudah dan senang terhadap SMS itu adalah bagi mempertahankan kuasa UMNO dan kuasa kerajaan yang ada. Yang paling susah hati dengan kesan dan kejayaan Bersih itu nanti ialah UMNO. Juka SPR dapat dibebaskan dari UMNO/BN dan kerajaan, maka yang terancam ialah UMNO. Maka pihak yang terpaksa menerima tanggungjawab dari ancaman SMS itu ialah Najib dan UMNO. Tidak penting apakah Najib dan UMNO tahu atau tidak cerita pengiriman SMS itu, tetapi ia datang dari pihak yang membela SPR, UMNO dan Najib. Maka natijah dari kejadiaan pergi kepada UMNO dan Najib. Boleh jadi SMS itu dibuat oleh pihak ketiga yang bertujuan bagi mengapi-apikan antara Bersih yang disokong penuh oleh pembangkang khususnya Pakatan Rakyat supaya berlaga terus dengan kerajaan Najib dan UMNO. Bukan mustahil musuh dan batu api mengambil kesempatan bagi menegangkan lagi keadaan. Apa pun perbuatan itu seperti memihak kepada Najib. Maka Najib terpaksa menerima tempelak dan tohmah daripadanya. Amat malang bagi Najib dan UMNO terpaksa menerima tempelak atas kejadian yang dia dan sekutunya tidak lakukan. Tetapi itu risiko dan beban yang terpaksa dipikul oleh ketua kerajaan dan ketua parti yang memerintah. Apa saja yang berlaku dalam negera, beban dan pertanggungjawaban itu terpaksa dipikul olehnya. Amat malang juga jika ia dibuat oleh seorang UMNO yang sayang kepada partinya, kepada Najib yang memimpin partinya dan dia adalah penyokong tegar parti dan Najib, maka ia dilakukan atas tujuan membela dan mempertahankan parti, kerajaan dan Najib. Sekali pun ia adalah bagi mempertahankan Najib dan partinya, tetapi dengan membuat SMS mengugut Ambiaga itu, adalah tindakan yang tidak betul dan salah. Ia menyusah dan menambah beban Najib. Apabila ia dirasakan dibuat oleh UMNO, maka ada yang akan berfikir, bahawa begitu sekali teruknya UMNO hingga ia sanggup mengancam keselamatan orang yang tidak sealiran dengannya. Kemungkinan perhimpunan besar-besaran Bersih itu akan menimbulkan huruhara dan penyusahkan adalah satu pandangan yang bersifat kebarangkalian. Belum tentu persepti itu berlaku. Jika betul negara ini aman, rakyatnya terbuka dan bertoleransi, bertamaddun, berpegang kepada amalan demokrasi, dan kerajaannya disokong penuh orang rakyat, maka tiada apa yang dibimbangkan dengan demonstrasi aman. Apa lagi ia dijaga oleh polis yang cekap bertaraf dunia dan kerajaan yang pintar yang berfikiran maju, maka tidak wajar panik dan gelabah atas amalan yang biasa dalam masyarakat dan negara maju. Tetapi bagi negara dan masyarakat yang bertaraf konggo dan gurka, tidak sedia membiarkan tunjuk perasaan aman. Ketakutannya lebih teruk dari hasil tunjuk perasaan itu. Subra: Majikan boleh ambil pembantu rumah Indonesia tanpa ejen Posted: 03 Jul 2011 12:24 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Jun — Majikan boleh menggaji pembantu rumah warganegara Indonesia secara terus tanpa melalui khidmat ejen atau agensi berkaitan apabila prosedur mengenainya dipersetujui oleh Malaysia dan republik itu. Menteri Sumber Manusia Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam berkata perkara itu merupakan antara yang terkandung dalam Memorandum Persefahaman (MoU) mengenai pengambilan pembantu rumah dari republik itu yang ditandatangani akhir Mei lepas. "Contohnya kalau majikan itu ada pembantu rumah yang bekerja sekarang sudah tamat tempoh dan mahu pulang (ke negaranya), kemudian pembantu rumah itu mempunyai angota keluarga yang mahu menggantikan tempatnya, majikan boleh terus mengambilnya tanpa melalui saluran agensi," katanya dipetik Bernama Online. Beliau berkata kepada pemberita selepas pelancaran program "My Skills 2011" peringkat kebangsaan oleh Presiden MIC Datuk G. Palanivel di Universiti Malaya di sini, hari ini. Dr Subramaniam berkata kedua-dua negara sedang memperincikan perkara itu termasuk menyenaraikan prosedur yang perlu dipatuhi oleh majikan sebelum ia boleh dilaksanakan. Selain itu, mengenai kadar bayaran pengambilan pembantu rumah oleh agensi pekerja asing, beliau berkata pihaknya bersama Kementerian Dalam Negeri telah mengadakan pertemuan dengan agensi-agensi terbabit bagi menjelaskan kadar bayaran baru. Beliau berkata daripada 100 agensi yang ditemui, lebih 30 agensi telah menyatakan persetujuan untuk mengenakan bayaran pada kadar RM4,511 seperti yang terkandung dalam MoU itu. "Agensi-agensi yang bersetuju ini bolehlah mengambil pembantu rumah apabila pengambilan semula dibuka nanti, mereka yang tidak bersetuju kena tunggulah," katanya. Datuk Seri Najib Razak (gambar) berkata tindakan itu bertujuan bagi memastikan keamanan dan ketenteraman negara dikekalkan. "Ini sebagai langkah preventif, pencegahan lebih baik daripada berubat, apa-apa polis buat ini sebagai satu langkah pencegahan daripada sesuatu yang lebih serius berlaku," katanya dipetik Bernama Online. "Ada beberapa elemen bila ada demonstrasi seperti ini, ada orang nak tumpang semangkuk jadi mungkin ada mereka yang berfahaman komunis, ada mereka yang merupakan kaki pengacau, mungkin ada mereka yang suka berhimpun sebab suka pada keadaan yang liar dan keadaan yang boleh menaikkan semangat mereka dan sebagainya," katanya. Perdana Menteri berkata kumpulan itu juga cuba menggambarkan kerajaan bersifat autokrasi dan kuku besi serta tidak liberal kerana menolak perbuatan yang mereka ingin lakukan. "Mereka akan menggunakan media antarabangsa untuk menggambarkan secara negatif kerajaan Malaysia... kalau sekiranya mereka boleh buat provokasi pada kita sehinggakan kita terpaksa menggunakan sesuatu yang mereka boleh gambarkan sebagai menggunakan kezaliman terhadap mereka. "Kebebasan untuk berkumpul ada syarat-syarat sebab kita mesti jaga keamanan dan ketenteraman awam. Kalau kita buat terlalu bebas nanti negara kita ini akan menjurus pada keadaan yang huru-hara dan tidak menentu yang tidak menguntungkan sesiapa sama sekali," katanya. The dream showpiece pits Djokovic, the man the ATP computers will show is the new No.1 in the rankings on Monday, against the bullish Spaniard who is showing every sign that he can chase down Federer's record of 16 grand slam titles. While Andy Murray briefly raised hopes that Britain would have its first Wimbledon men's finalist for 73 years by leading Nadal in the semis, there is no doubt that the final is befitting the sport's blue-riband tournament. Djokovic trails their series 16-11 but during a remarkable year for the Serb winning-machine he beat Nadal in consecutive finals in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Rome. While the first two in that burst were on his favoured hardcourts the latter were on Nadal's beloved red dirt. Should he prevail on Centre Court's lawn on Sunday and become the first player to beat Nadal at the All England Club since Federer in the 2007 final, it would rubber-stamp Djokovic's lofty new status more effectively than ranking points. "His mental position over me today is probably a little bit better because he won the last four finals against me," Nadal, who is playing in his fifth Wimbledon final in six years, said. "I will try my best. I have to play aggressive. I have to play with intensity, with rhythm. That's what I'm gonna try." Nadal's demotion to world No.2 would look rather odd if he retained his Wimbledon title tomorrow but the polite Spaniard will turn his thoughts to that in the months ahead. For the three, four or five hours he will be on court tomorrow, only victory over Djokovic will matter. "We will see when I finish my career where I am in the history of tennis," he said. Younger workers are more apt to bite the bullet, and men are twice as likely as women to be expected to work on vacation, the poll by jobs website Glassdoor.com showed. "People are still pretty nervous about personal spending," Glassdoor chief executive Robert Hohman said, noting the "stark" numbers of people willing to change vacation plans. "It's reassuring to see the majority of employees feel their employer support their ability to 'check out' and recharge," he noted. About 45 per cent of employees and the self-employed would reduce or cancel their summer vacation plans to save money, according to the online survey of 2,203 adults conducted by Harris Interactive. Thirteen per cent of people take vacations knowing they may have to work if necessary. Nearly one in five, 18 per cent, said they must be available should an emergency arise. More men said they are expected to work on vacation than women, the survey showed. Workers in the US South and West are more likely to call off their summer vacation, as well as work during their time off. About 53 per cent of employees in both regions said they would alter their vacation compared with 38 per cent in the Midwest and 34 per cent in the Northeast. Of those who were expected to work during vacation, 18 per cent are in the South, 17 per cent in the West, compared to just 8 per cent in the Midwest and 7 per cent in the Northeast. Young adults are most likely to change their vacation plans because they have less of a financial cushion, Hohman said. Their plans also tend to be simpler than for older vacationers who may go away with their children.
