PENANG, July 20 — Last Friday saw the launch of one of Penang's newest restaurants, Sagar. This north Indian restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the Bayview Beach Resort in Batu Ferringhi, which is a pretty apt location as sagar is the Sanskrit word for ocean.

"Is it because you serve mainly seafood?" I asked proprietor Hermet Singh. "No," he replied, "it is because oceans have no limit and therefore allow business ventures to grow."

Well, considering that this outlet is the 8th of the KL chain started by the enterprising man and his brother Gurdarshan you can gather that this interpretation of the word sagar is pretty accurate. Although most of the restaurants are located south, there is a Sagar in Pantai Tengah, Langkawi.

Knowing that the launch party was going to be quite noisy and that there wouldn't be a chance for Hermet to sit down and talk to me, I was lucky to be given the opportunity to sample some of the food a couple of days prior.

The menu is extensive, and includes a range of starters, tandooris, curries, naans and vegetarian dishes all cooked by their team of chefs from India, headed by Chef Lakhan from Mhadaya Pradesh near Mumbai.

We started with a tasty Chicken Mallai Tikka, pieces of chicken marinated with just the right amount of fragrant coriander and cumin mixed together with sour yoghurt. This was accompanied by a Mixed Vegetable Pakora, chopped vegetables and onions mixed into a batter then deep-fried into slightly salty, fragrant crispy balls which go well with a bee … or two, as the case might be!

Mains included a Dhal Curry and a Mutton Masala, surprisingly spicy because northern Indian cuisine is not usually very (chilli) hot, but quite delicious nonetheless , to go with their special Chicken Briyani which is baked with a "lid" of naan bread to keep the flavours in. As for desserts, their cooling home-made Mango Kulfi (Indian ice cream) went down a treat, as did the Pistachio.

Although it is by no means the first of its kind in this part of the island, Sagar will be somewhere special to take people for a night out if you want elegant surroundings and something savoury and spicy that's not Chinese. I also particularly like the fact that there are two private rooms which can be made into one, if you want to hold a function.
