Giant-killer Cordon marches on at worlds

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:07 AM PDT

LONDON, Aug 10 – Guatemalan giant-killer Kevin Cordon marched into the third round of the badminton world championships today with an impressive 21-19 21-17 victory over Sweden's Henri Hurskainen.

Hard on the heels of his stunning first round success over fifth-seed Chen Long of China, Cordon led for most of the match at London's Wembley Arena, helped by some powerful cross-court smashing to confound the Swede.

Cordon, world-ranked 36, gets his first name after Kevin Keegan who was a favourite soccer player of Cordon's father.

He said: "It's great to be still alive in the world championships. I was still tired yesterday after the match with Chen Long but I kept my focus and tried to play my best again."

Since March, Cordon has been playing with the Spanish national team in Madrid. He explained: "It's easier to practise in Europe, it's easier to travel and there are more tournaments every week."

On an adjoining court, top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia breezed past Finland's Ville Lang 21-10 21-11 and will now meet South Korean ninth seed Park Sung-hwan.

Chong Wei told reporters: "I am quite confident because I played him in the Sudirman Cup recently and beat him."

Defending champion Chen Jin of China and former world titleholders Lin Dan and Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat were in action later today.

In the women's singles, Commonwealth Games champion Saina Nehwal of India put an end to the hopes of Ireland's Chloe Magee, winning their third round match 21-10 21-7. – Reuters

BIRMINGHAM, Aug 10 – Tim Bresman bowled the adhesive Rahul Dravid (22) on the stroke of lunch to complete a perfect morning's work for England on the opening day of the third test against India at Edgbaston today.

The England all-rounder straightened the ball late off the pitch to hit the stumps and reduce the visitors to 75 for four after Andrew Strauss had won the the toss for the first time in the series and elected to field in cool, overcast conditions.

Openers Virender Sehwag (0), Gautam Gambhir (38) and Sachin Tendulkar (1) were the other batsmen to fall.

England, who can take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the four-match series and replace India at the top of the world rankings, struck with the eighth delivery of the day and Sehwag's first of the innings.

Playing his first test since January after undergoing shoulder surgery, Sehwag gloved a shortish Stuart Broad delivery that he attempted to leave only to see it seam back into him and flick his glove. Umpire Steve Davis said not out initially but England's decision review was vindicated courtesy of the hot-spot technology.

Gambhir, who started positively, hitting seven boundaries, tried to drive Bresnan through the covers only to lose his leg stump off the inside edge.

Tendulkar, still seeking his 100th international century, received a standing ovation from a near capacity 25,000 crowd.

In response, Strauss immediately replaced Bresnan with James Anderson, who has dimissed the veteran world record holder seven times.

Tendulkar lived dangerously for the one over he faced from Anderson, then departed to Broad in the following over, pushing at a ball just outside off stump to Anderson at third slip.

England made one change from the team who won by 319 runs at Trent Bridge, replacing the injured Jonathan Trott with Ravi Bopara.

India made three changes, replacing injured off-spinner Harbhajan Singh with leg-spinner Amit Mishra. Opener Abhinav Mukund was omitted in favour of Sehwag and Gambhir came back for the injured Yuvraj Singh.
