Turning up the heat at Hong Kong Li Garden

The Onion Eggplant with Soya Sauce is one awesome dish. — Pictures by Eu Hooi Khaw

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — It was a little early for lunch at Hong Kong Li Garden at Plaza Low Yat but that did not stop our friend ST from wolfing down two bowls of rice. The reason was the very spicy and appetising dishes that had been ordered for us.

There was the Deepfried Chicken with Chilli, Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce and the Kai Lan in Spicy Sauce. A brave little girl ate the food with us, tried the kai lan fried with dried chillies and drank a lot of water after that. I liked how green and crunchy the vegetables were, the fat bulbs of fried garlic in it, and the dried chillies.

Crunch, hot and spicy... the Deepfried Chicken with Chilli.

The Deepfried Chicken with Chilli was pieces of chicken thigh meat seasoned with chilli powder and deepfried, with garlic and oats added. So you had these lethal looking crispy grains on top, and they delivered a flavourful punch. The chicken pieces were juicy at the bite, and they were so good eaten on their own or with rice, sprinkling the chilli-flavoured oats and garlic on top of it.

The little girl did not complain about the Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce which was a blend of chilli sauce, oyster sauce and a little curry powder. The deepfried prawns had been tossed in this sauce that was a little sweet, with a hint of spices, and the aroma of fried curry leaves. They were mildly hot.

The Mongolian Pork Ribs were delicious with its sticky, creamy sauce with a hint of sweetness and the heat of black pepper in them. They were not really ribs but tender boneless meat from the yok ngan or back rib that had been dipped in a thin batter, deepfried and finished with the sauce. Butter, not milk, had been used to cook the sauce, with tomato and a little chilli sauce added.

The Cashewnut Broth is a must-try dessert.

I thought the Onion Eggplant with Soya Sauce was awesome. Usually something that appears simple to make is hard to get right. The chef had deepfried chunks of eggplant, doused in boiling water, drained and tossed it in oil and soya sauce in the wok. Fried onions and garlic were liberally sprinkled on it. The eggplant was naturally sweet and had a subtle salty lift from soya sauce, with crunchy bits of onion and garlic.

Claypot Fish Belly with Chilli Salt was a wholesome dish of meaty and smooth slices of fried fish belly, egg tofu, mushrooms and carrot brought together in soya-oyster sauce. It's food you would love to eat every day at home.

I was persuaded to try a "cham" — coffee and tea mix with milk. "We have tweaked this a bit, and the tea is very fragrant," said Ken Tan, owner of the restaurant. Truly the aroma of the tea rose up as you sipped and you could catch the whiff of coffee too. I could have drunk another cup of this.

Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce... yummy.

Dessert was an unusual Cashewnut Broth. Unlike a black sesame broth or chee mah woo, which has rice flour added to it, this was pure cashewnuts, deepfried and blended. The foamy, aromatic broth was rich and lightly creamy, with just enough sugar added. I loved it.

Other dishes on the menu include a Stirfried Sliced Pork with Spicy Sauce (from spicy bean paste), Seafood Fried Rice Cake which is immensely popular here, Squid Tentacles Coated with Salted Egg, Deepfried Pork Ribs with Apple Jam, Sauteed Beef with Black Bean Sauce and Deepfried Eggplant with Chicken Floss. There are noodle dishes such as the Fried Hor Fun Teochew Style and Egg Noodles with a Seafood Sauce. Eating here is inexpensive — the meat dishes are from RM16 to RM18; the fried rice cake is only from RM10.90 to RM13.

For dessert again, Li Garden does things differently, especially in the Chestnut Red Bean Broth. I would want to try this next.

Hong Kong Li Garden is located at UG-001 and UG-002 Plaza Low Yat, 7 Jalan Bintang, off Jalan Bukit Bintang (Tel: 03-2144-7088).

Hong Kong Li Garden has lots of surprises in store for the diner.
