NEW ORLEANS, Feb 4 – New Orleans was transformed into one massive party today as the city prepared to host the 47th Super Bowl between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens.

The city's French Quarter was packed with visiting fans soaking up the atmosphere before the biggest game in American professional sports was due to start at 6.30pm EST.

Across the country, millions of people were having their own Super Bowl parties in preparation for a game that has all the ingredients of a classic.

The two teams left their hotels in the early afternoon and took a short bus ride through the crowded streets to the Superdome, which will be packed with more than 70,000 spectators.

For the first time in the 47 years of the Super Bowl, two brothers will go head-to-head for the National Football League championship.

John Harbaugh is Baltimore's head coach and his younger brother Jim has the same job with the 49ers and their sibling rivalry has dominated the build-up to the game.

The two players who have been the main focus in the lead-up to the game are Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Lewis is the only survivor from the Ravens team that won the Super Bowl 12 years ago. A 17-year-veteran of the NFL, who has spent his entire career with the Ravens, Lewis is retiring after the game.

Kaepernick's career is just starting. He began the season as San Francisco's backup quarterback but kept the job after getting his chance when Alex Smith suffered a midseason concussion.

While Lewis and the Ravens are chasing their second Super Bowl title, the Niners are attempting to win a sixth and tie the overall record held by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bale rocket saves Spurs blushes in win at West Brom

LONDON, Feb 3 — Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale showed absent strikers how it was done by blasting in a 67th-minute winner in a 1-0 Premier League success at 10-man West Bromwich Albion today.

The victory for fourth-placed Spurs, which came despite their only available forward Jermain Defoe limping off in the first half, put them a point behind Chelsea in third after Rafael Benitez's side lost 3-2 at Newcastle United yesterday.

The Londoners were helped by West Brom's Macedonia defender Goran Popov being sent off after 48 minutes for spitting at Kyle Walker but Spurs deserved the win because of Welshman Bale's continued heroics.

The 23-year-old's 13th goal in all competitions this term, following another cracker in the 1-1 draw with Norwich City midweek, summed up all his attributes as he evaded a challenge on the edge of the box and let fly with a swerving strike.

With Emmanuel Adebayor away at the African Nations Cup, Spurs' over-reliance on out-of-form Defoe was keenly felt by supporters but Bale is digging them out of holes as a Champions League spot looks more and more a possibility.

Ninth-placed West Brom had decent chances through Shane Long and Romelu Lukaku but perhaps missed fellow forward Peter Odemwingie, dropped after turning up at Queens Park Rangers without permission on transfer deadline day as he tried to force through a move.

Second-placed Manchester City host Liverpool, in seventh, later (1600 GMT) hoping to close the 10-point gap on leaders Manchester United, who won 1-0 at Fulham yesterday. — Reuters
