KUCHING, March 31 – Sarawak tonight launched its 50th independence anniversary celebration with the participation of about 50,000 people at 47 venues throughout the state.

The main venue of the celebration at the State Unity Stadium in Petra Jaya was attended by about 5,000 people led by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng.

Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said Sarawak positioned itself as a state that could contribute significantly to Malaysia.

"We aspire to see our children being able to achieve success (standard of living) on par with that of the United States and Europe in 20 years' time," he said.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing, who spearheads the celebration themed 'Sarawak Harmoni, Kemakmuran Dinikmati', said various events had been lined-up for the occasion until Sept 16 with the aim of demonstrating the state's achievements and uniting the people. – Bernama

For a start, the motorcycles will be distributed to four Sabah districts – Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Keningau and Sandakan.
