Toddler meals are loaded with salt, study shows

Consuming too much salt as a toddler could set your child up for a salty palate for life, experts warn. — Afp picLOS ANGELES, March 23 — A new study suggests that toddlers may be eating far too much salt if they regularly consume pre-prepared meals. Nearly 75 per cent of commercial pre-packaged meals and savoury snacks for toddlers are too high in sodium, according to new research from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers compared the sodium content per serving of 1,115 US products for babies and toddlers using data on major and private label brands. Their study was presented at the American Heart Association's latest scientific sessions, going on now in New Orleans.

Toddler meals had significantly higher amounts of sodium than baby meals, and the amount of sodium in some of the toddler meals was as high as 630 mg per serving — about 40 per cent of the 1,500 mg daily limit recommended by the American Heart Association. The foods with the most sodium were savoury snacks and meals for toddlers.

"Our concern is the possible long-term health risks of introducing high levels of sodium in a child's diet, because high blood pressure, as well as a preference for salty foods may develop early in life," says lead author Joyce Maalouf. "Parents and other caregivers can read the nutrition facts labels on baby and toddler foods, to choose the healthiest options for their child," she adds.

Experts recommend that if parents are going to buy pre-packaged foods, check the label and don't purchase items that contain more than 100 milligrams of sodium. — Afp-Relaxnews

Men may soon be able to block out the electromagnetic waves of their mobile device with their business attire. — Afp picLIMOGES, France, March 23 — French fashion label Smuggler today said it had produced a suit that can block electromagnetic waves produced by mobile phones.

"This is the first use of technological materials in every day men's clothing that doesn't cause discomfort," said Benjamin Anin of the company's research and development department. "Until now this type of very specific material was more rudimentary and only used by certain professionals who were particularly exposed," he added.

The material took three years to develop in collaboration with the XLIM Institute in Limoges in southwestern France which does research on electromagnetism.

The technique involves interweaving fabric with non-allergenic nickel, stainless steel, aluminium and faux gold in jacket pockets.

Anin said the material could block 90 per cent of electromagnetic waves and was timely given the move to 4G and widespread use of wireless and smartphones.

The first suits using the fabric will form part of the label's spring-summer 2013 collection. — Afp-Relaxnews
