Too many female marathon runners experience breast pain

LONDON, April 23 — A new British study finds that more than a third of women who run marathons suffer from breast pain when jogging — and that four out of 10 do nothing about it. But researchers say women could improve their odds with a better sports bra.

A new British study finds that more than a third of female runners who experience breast pain from jogging could improve their odds by getting a better sports bra. — AFP picPublished online last week in The British Journal of Sports Medicine, the study looked at 1,285 female runners who registered for last year's London Marathon.

Subjects answered 30 questions about their running habits, whether they wore sports bras or what type of support they used, and if they experience breast pain, known as mastalgia. More than 400 of the runners said they had breast pain, but perhaps not surprisingly, women with larger breasts suffered the most.

Researchers from St. Mary's University College London and the University of Portsmouth also noted that women without children were significantly more likely to experience breast pain than those with children.

According to WebMD, some of the runners treated their pain with painkillers, while others altered their diet, used hot and cold compresses, or applied evening primrose oil. Lead researcher Nicola Brown noted that while most women used sports bras, they didn't necessarily perceive adjusting the fit of the bra as a method to overcoming breast pain.

For the majority of women, it's essential to find a sports bra that is comfortable, won't chafe, and protects your breasts from the wear and tear of even a little bouncing, which can break down ligaments in the breast tissue and cause sagging, experts say.

To get a proper fit, talk to a specialist in a major department store or a bra boutique, or try websites such as Team Estrogen or Brayola for tips on sizing — but nothing beats a professional, a dressing room, and a tape measure. A few sports bras designed for larger busts include Lululemon's Ta Ta Tamer II, Moving Comfort's Fiona Maximum Control Wire-Free Sports Bra, Lynx Sports Bra, and Enell Sports Bra. — AFP/Relaxnews

Undergraduates should know of the GE13 developments

A brief study conducted by Bernama at several higher learning institutions in Shah Alam found that some youths have decided to keep away from politics as they felt it is a 'dirty game'. — File picSHAH ALAM, April 23 — Undergraduates should participate and learn about the political developments in the country in the run up to the 13th General Election (GE13), especially when looking at the fact that they too will be the ones deciding the country's future.

"So we have to provide the opportunity to undergraduates to access the political realm," said a lecturer with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UiTM) Administration and Policy Studies Faculty, Associate Professor Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin.

"I encourage graduates to hold forums with political parties at their respective institutions to enhance their political maturity," he said when met by Bernama during a forum entitled "What is There in the General Elections ?" organised by the UiTM's Law Faculty students recently.

CATEGORISED AS FENCE SITTERS

Meanwhile, a brief study conducted by Bernama at several higher learning institutions in Shah Alam found that some youths have decided to keep away from politics as they felt it is a 'dirty game'.

Yet there were many youths who were keen to keep in touch with the political developments.

The head of the Student Council at UiTM, Azraful Azman, 23, when contacted by Bernama voiced his concern when youths categorised as fence sitters ignore the political developments in the country.

"One of the factors why the undergraduates loathe at politics is that it involves more defamatory than good elements," he said.

If this mindset continues it would affect the future leadership, he added.

AMENDMENTS ALLOW UNDERGRADUATES TO PARTICIPATE

An applied science student Muhammad Adib Akram, 23, felt that the country's politics have yet to mature with many of the candidates forgetting their responsibilities to the voters after being elected.

"If the politicians are evaluated based on their ability to address issues, the undergraduates could then differentiate between the good and bad in choosing their leader," he said.

Since the amendments to the Section 15 of the Universities and Universities College Act came into force in April 2012, undergraduates are allowed to participate in politics with the GE13 being their first chance to get a taste of their new found freedom. — Bernama
