The United States, who had already advanced to the quarterfinals, defeated Costa Rica 1-0 yesterday to clinch top spot in the C group of the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.

Brek Shea scored late in the contest as he lifted the Americans over Costa Rica with his first goal in international play.

Shea took a pass from teammate Landon Donovan then raced towards the goal where he beat Costa Rica goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton with a precision shot in the 82nd minute.

Neither team failed to create a lot of scoring chances in the opening half which ended 0-0.

Donovan had one of the best chances for the USA in the 57th minute when he collected the ball inside the box but failed to make good contact on his shot.

Carlos Johnson almost got Costa Rica on the board in the 78th minute with a nice header off a free kick but the ball was knocked down by American goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Celso Borges had another chance for Costa Rica in the stoppage time, getting his head on a ball but Johnson made the save.

In yesterday's other group C contest, Ariel Martinez scored a hat trick as Cuba reached the quarter-finals with a 4-0 dismantling of lowly Belize.

On Sunday, the USA will square off against El Salvador. The other quarter-finals will see Cuba battle Panama, Mexico faces Trinidad and Honduras goes up against Costa Rica. - AFP, July 17, 2013.

Thai boy dumped, Chelsea mascot role goes to PM’s son

A father in Thailand has claimed that his son was dumped as a mascot for Chelsea's game in Bangkok and replaced by the prime minister's son, a report said today.

Nine-year-old Noppadol Sudlapha was in line to walk out with the Chelsea players for today's friendly and had already gone through pre-match rehearsals, his father Kriangyos told the Bangkok Post.

But Noppadol and several other children were told that they had been taken off the list of mascots in favour of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's son and the children of five other cabinet ministers.

Kriangyos told the newspaper that his boy was upset by the slight and no longer wanted to see the game between the English Premier League giants and the Singha All-Star XI at Rajamangala Stadium.

An official from beer company Singha, which is organising the match, said parents had been free to apply for their children to be mascots, but not all had been successful.

But the official, who did not want to be named, acknowledged that most of the mascots were the children of VIPs or Singha executives.

"Had I been authorised to make the selection, then I'd have selected the prime minister's son," he was quoted as saying.

According to another report, Yingluck's 11-year-old son Supasek Amornchat, nicknamed "Pike", was also among the children who took part in Chelsea's coaching clinic this week led by star players.

"It was a lot of fun," he said, according to The Nation. "I realised how much more I have to learn. They are very good. If we want to get to their level, we need to train a lot more." - AFP, July 17, 2013.
