Diet soda could be causing you to overeat, shows study Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:59 PM PST Artificially sweetened drinks are being blamed – again – for sabotaging diets in a new US study that found diet soda could lead to increased food intake. After looking at national consumption patterns of diet beverages and calorie intake, researchers from John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that overweight and obese adults who drink diet beverages consume more calories from food than obese adults who drink regular sodas and other sugary beverages. The results come as consumption rates of diet soda in the US have seen a dramatic spike over the last few decades, with 3% of the population consuming diet drinks in 1965, up to 20% today, authors note. Data was compiled from national health surveys conducted between 1999 to 2010. The results were published in The American Journal of Public Health last week. The findings corroborate previous research that found artificial sweeteners may cause greater activation of the brain's reward sensors, disrupt appetite control and cause people to increase their overall food intake. Another study published last year in General Dentistry also provided compelling evidence for avoiding diet soda, after researchers said that the consumption of artificially sweetened drinks is as damaging to the teeth as the use of crack cocaine and meth. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 22, 2014. |
Malt whisky sells for record-breaking RM2.09 million Posted: 21 Jan 2014 04:52 AM PST A bottle of malt whisky has gone under the hammer in Hong Kong for the record-breaking sum of HK$4.9 million (RM2.09 million), an auction house says. The Macallan 'M' Decanter 6-litre Imperiale attracted global interest at a Sotheby's auction, the firm said in a statement which identified the buyer only as an Asian private collector. The former British colony has become a hub for auctions of collectibles and rare items ranging from diamonds to stamps, thanks to growing wealth in China and other parts of Asia. An Asian buyer purchased a rare Leica camera, one of only four of its kind in the world, for US$620,000 (RM2.06 million) at a Hong Kong auction in November. Sotheby's said the bottle sold on Saturday broke the record for any single malt whisky bottle sold at auction, surpassing the US$460,000 paid in New York in 2010. – AFP Relaxnews, January 21, 2014. |
