Malaysian badminton men's singles superstar Datuk Lee Chong Wei (pic) and men's doubles pair of Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Malaysian Open Super Series badminton championship.

In the second round matches at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil today, Chong Wei brushed off Wang Zheming of China in straight sets of 21-17 and 21-18 in 42 minutes.

The world number one said he must work extra hard to overcome the Chinese players in order to win his 10th singles title in the tournament.

"I am taking one match at a time... and as usual it is the Chinese players who stand in the way. Most likely I will meet Chen Long in the final but I am not thinking too much about this," he told reporters after the match.

Chong Wei had lost to Chen Long in the final of the South Korean Open last week. It was his first major tournament this year. The Malaysian Open is his second; as such, he is expected to win it before home fans.

Credit must be given to V Shem and Khim Wah who gave a sterling performance in overcoming Thai pair Maneepong Jongjit/Nipitphon Puangpuapech in straight sets of 21-19 and 25-23 to make the quarterfinals.

"I do not want to think about who we will be meeting after this, it is more important that we believe that we can succeed," Khim Wah said.

Chong Wei will be meeting either Du Pengyu or Yuekun Chen, both from China, in the quarterfinals tomorrow while V Shem/Khim Wah will have to contend with either Germany's pair of Michael Fuchs/Johannes Schoettler or Chris Langridge/Peter Mills of England.

However, Malaysia's top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying were knocked out by Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto in 21-18, 17-21, 22-24.

Suffering the same fate were compatriots Ong Jian Guo/Lim Yin Loo who lost to seventh seeded Thai pair Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthokam in 19-21, 21-14, 17-21.

Meanwhile, in the women's doubles, Malaysian pair Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho (MAS) lost to Indoneisan pair Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth/Rizki Amelia Pradipta in 18-21, 9- 21. - Bernama, January 16, 2014.

The fifth-seeded Argentine had shown signs that he might be returning to his best form with victory in the warm-up tournament in Sydney but succumbed in a three-hour 53-minute thriller on court two.

The extreme heat kept the former US Open champion and his 62nd-ranked opponent off court until 9.25pm local time and they treated the crowd to an exciting match in which they combined for 100 unforced errors and 125 winners.

Bautista went for his shots to win the latter count 72-53 and took his place in the third round at a grand slam tournament for the first time when the exhausted world number five netted. - Reuters, January 16, 2014.
