Iran is seeking to have five rare books listed on Unesco's Memory of the World Register, Iran's Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.

Memory of the World Register is a list of library collections and archive holdings of global significance.

National Library and Archives of Iran (NLAI) director Reza Salahi-Amiri told a press conference on Sunday that the books have been proposed by the Iranian National Commission for Unesco.

One book submitted for registration is the Bustan (The Orchard) and the Gulistan (The Rose Garden) of Persian poet Sadi, inscribed by the 14th century calligrapher Ahmad Shirazi and preserved in NLAI.

Another book is a copy of Masnavi-ye Manavi, the magnum opus of Persian mystic and poet Molana Jalal ad-Din Rumi.

The third is Abu Is'haq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Farisi al-Istakhri's "Kitab al-masalik wa-al-mamalik" (Book of Roads and Kingdoms) dating back to the 10th century.

A Persian translation of the Book of Roads and Kingdoms is preserved in the National Museum of Iran and the original text is kept in a library in Germany.

The fourth book is a rare copy of "Al-abnia 'an haqaeq al-adwia" written by 12th century writer Abu Mansur Mowaffaq Heravi.

The fifth book is Safarnama (travelogue) by 11th century Persian poet Nasir Khusraw. – Bernama, April 22, 2014.
