Norwegians plan to launch world’s first Arctic whisky Posted: 08 May 2014 06:09 PM PDT May 09, 2014 Norwegian whisky lovers plan to launch what they claim will be the world's first Arctic whisky distillery. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, May 9, 2014.A group of Norwegian entrepreneurs plans to launch what they claim will be the world's first Arctic whisky distillery and produce a spirit "ripened under the midnight sun and northern lights". It's a poetic notion for plans that include transforming a former fish factory into a whisky distillery. But according to trade publication The Spirits Business, a Norwegian scientist and four friends hope to produce the world's first Arctic whisky on the island of Myken in northern Norway, using desalinated seawater from the Vestfjorden fjord. They expect to produce the first few liters of Myken Whisky later this year. Spirit makers are increasingly venturing into the Arctic to launch products sourced with pure glacial water – a marketing gimmick that evokes exclusivity, rarity and purity. Siku Glacier Ice Vodka, for instance, (which means "ice" in Greenlandic) is made with glacial water that goes back 60,000 years. Russian brand Polar Bear is likewise blended with melted glacial water. – AFP/Relaxnews, May 9, 2014.
