LONDON, Oct 5 – The Black Eyed Peas will not take part in a Michael Jackson tribute concert being held in the Welsh city of Cardiff at the weekend, organisers said.

The band was one of the biggest draws in the lineup for the show on Saturday.

"Due to unavoidable circumstances, the Black Eyed Peas will be unable to perform at this Saturday's Michael Forever event," said Chris Hunt, head of Global Live Events which is staging the concert.

"It is with regret that we announce the removal of Black Eyed Peas from the Michael Forever bill, but I look forward to a great night with other earth shattering artists.

"The event is really getting into gear and is going to be a fantastic evening for all."

Performing on the night will be artists including Jackson's sister La Toya, some of his brothers, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson.

Among the British stars will be Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, JLS and Diversity, while Beyonce will appear in a video performance.

The concert has divided Jackson's family, with brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie and sister La Toya defending the event and Jermaine and Randy opposing it, partly because it coincides with the US trial of the late singer's doctor Conrad Murray.

The Jackson estate has also voiced concerns about where the proceeds from the Michael Forever Tribute Concert eventually go.

Busan lays down the red carpet for Asia’s biggest film festival

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 01:54 AM PDT

HONG KONG, Oct 5 – The international cinema community is descending on the South Korean port city of Busan this week for an event that bills itself as Asia's largest film festival.

The 16th Busan International Film Festival will run from tomorrow, October 6 through October 14 and will feature a selection of 307 films from 70 countries, with 135 of them being billed as either world or international premieres.

The festival will this year move into the brand new, US$140 million (RM446.83 million) Busan Cinema Centre, which features a 4,000-seat outdoor theatre as well as a film archive and database as the event tries to cement its place not only on the international festival calendar but as the leading event of its kind in Asia.

Busan has in recent years met with increasing competition from the growing influence of festivals in the Chinese cities of Beijing in April, Shanghai in June and the long-running event in Tokyo, which kicks off on October 22.

Establishing itself in the massive cinema centre is seen as one way of ensuring its influence continues, as is an expanded film market (for business) and a more complex selection of films that not only features such programmes as Korean Cinema Today and A Window on Asian Cinema, but will this year include a retrospective of Portuguese cinema and a look at what is currently happening in the Australian cinema scene.

This year's edition will open tomorrow with the premiere of local director Song Il-gon's romance Always and will close on Friday, October 14 with the premiere of the Japanese drama Chronicle of My Mother from Masato Harado.

Busan is the festival credited with not only launching the international careers of such lauded local directors as Kim Ki-duk (Samaritan Girl) and Bong Joon-ho (The Host) but of helping the work of such directors as China's Jia Zhangke (Still Life) reach the world outside.

Thousands of representatives from the international film-making community come to the festival each year – both to promote their own films and investigate the possibilities of co-productions – while more and more international film fans are also making the journey, according to the festival organisers.

For those unable to make the trip, the festival's official website features daily updates and links to webcasts of the various press conferences, which this year will feature noted Asian directors such as Johnnie To and Tsui Hark alongside international visitors such as French director Luc Besson and actress Isabelle Huppert. – AFP
