Midfielder Callum McManaman pounced in the 80th minute at the Hawthorns to give Wigan a 3-2 win over West Brom after they had twice fallen behind. Villa left Carrow Road with a 2-1 triumph courtesy of Gabriel Agbonlahor's double, including an 89th-minute winner. Newcastle United were held to a 0-0 draw at West Ham United, leaving the Magpies three points above the relegation zone. Wigan are third bottom on 35 points, two points behind Sunderland, who play Stoke City on Monday. Villa moved up to 14th place with 40 points, leaving Norwich still in trouble on 38. Second-placed Manchester City drew 0-0 at Swansea City and relegated Reading won 4-2 at Fulham. Tottenham Hotspur's home game with Southampton was delayed due to a traffic accident. Arsenal, like Spurs chasing a Champions League place, play relegated Queens Park Rangers in the day's late kickoff. — Reuters |
Sheikh Mohammed puts woes aside to land 2,000 Guineas Posted: 04 May 2013 08:56 AM PDT The victory was a first for trainer and co-owner Jim Bolger, and was completed under the gaze of Sheikh Mohammed (picture), appearing in public despite the scrutiny on his Godolphin stable which has been embroiled in racing's biggest ever doping scandal. Trainer Mahmood al Zarooni was banned last month for eight years after 11 horses in his care tested positive for anaebolic steroids and he admitted administering prohibited substances to four others. Ridden by Kevin Manning, Dawn Approach made his first start of the season in damp but firm conditions in the first classic of the flat season and more than justified his 11-8 favourite's tag. Outsider Glory Awaits (150-1) was second, while Van Der Neer (20-1) was third, seven-and-a-quarter lengths behind the winner. "I'm very very happy to come and see a good horse winning the Guineas, I think he is a great horse," Sheikh Mohammed told Britain's Channel 4 after watching his first winner in the 2,000 Guineas since 1999. Dawn Approach is now unbeaten in seven starts. — Reuters |
