Tash Aw among big names in Booker Prize longlist

A 13-strong longlist for the Man Booker Prize 2013 has been announced, mixing established authors such as Jim Crace and Colm Tóibín with some newer faces such as Malaysia's Tash Aw.

Should Eleanor Catton, Eve Harris or Donal Ryan make it through to the Sept 10 shortlist and be declared winner come Oct 15, it would be the first time that a debutant has done so since 2008's Aravind Adiga with "The White Tiger."

Both Crace and Tóibín have been previously nominated, Tóibín twice, and Crace recently underlined his intention to retire from writing, which would make "Harvest" his last novel. He had won the Whitbread Book Award -- now the Costa Book Award -- with "Quarantine" in 1997.

Hilary Mantel's "Bring Up The Bodies" was the previous winner in 2012.

It also won out at the Costa Book Awards and Specsavers National Book Awards.

The Man Booker Prize offers a £50,000 (RM250,000) sum to its winner, and selects from authors who are citizens of the UK, Republic of Ireland, or Commonwealth countries.
