Foursquare launches menu search option

In an attempt to resuscitate itself from looming obscurity, geolocating service Foursquare has added a menu search option that will find the nearest restaurant serving up a bowl of steaming ramen or mussels and fries.

Foursquare has this week expanded its Explore search to include full menus of restaurants nearby. That means that users with a sudden hankering for a meaty sandwich, for instance, can punch in "pastrami" and find the nearest eatery that can satisfy their craving.

The menu database has currently archived 43 million menu items from more than half a million check-in spots around the world.

Users with dietary restrictions can also use the search option to look up restaurants that serve gluten-free fare.

If Foursquare's latest service sounds familiar, that's because popular app Foodspotting has been offering the same type of service.

Instead of restaurant recommendations, Foodspotting helps users find specific dishes they're craving or looking for and make recommendations for fellow users.

And unlike restaurant reviews, only dishes worthy of a trip are allowed. The app is also popular for being a digital library of mouthwatering food photos. – AFP/Relaxnews, September 12, 2013.

More than 10,290 Zagat readers have spoken and they've named classic French dining institution The Waterside Inn the top restaurant for the 2014 crowd-sourced London guide.

For the second year in a row, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant in the 16th century village of Bray along the Thames got top marks in the food category by Zagat diners.

The eatery also tied with The Ledbury, Le Gavroche and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay for top service.

Helmed by French chef Alain Roux, the inn is described as "unashamedly French" and changes its menu seasonally.

Top winners in other categories include Sketch - The Lecture Room & Library for top decor; recurring favorite The Wolseley for most popular, and Masala Zone as the most popular chain.

According to the guide, London diners eat out an average of 3.7 meals a week, and favor Italian cuisine, followed by Japanese and French.

And their biggest beef? Slow service, inattentive and rude staff.

Here are some of the top rated restaurants in the all-important food category according to the 2014 Zagat London guide:

- Yashi Sushi

- Barrafina

- Gauthier Soho

- The Ledbury

- Le Gavroche

- Dinings

- Petrus

- French Table

- The Square

Just last week, meanwhile, the Good Food Guide 2014 named Cartmel restaurant L'Enclume the best in the UK. – AFP/Relaxnews, September 12, 2013.
