North America's largest chocolate producer has entered into a multi-year contract with printing provider 3D Systems, to develop a range of 3D printed edible sweet treats.

"Whether it's creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats into the future,"said William Papa, Vice President and Chief Research and Development Officer at The Hershey Company.

3D Systems is well known for its 3D food printing technology, notably the Chef Jet Pro 3D Printer, which it debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Earlier this month Italian food company Barilla announced that it was working with Dutch organisation TNO to develop a 3D printer capable of producing 15-20 pieces of pasta every two minutes. - AFP/Relaxnews, January 21, 2014.

A total of 3.2 million bottles were shipped to Africa in 2013, marking a 26.7% increase.

Though losing favour on its home turf, cognac seems to have a growing following outside of France. Exports to the Nafta zone (US, Canada and Mexico) rose 2.1% in volume and 5.3% in value in 2013. On the opposite end of the spectrum, shipments of the spirit within Europe totalled 43.1 million bottles over the year, marking a 5.3% decline in volume (a decrease of 0.7% in value).

The future of cognac could be in the southern hemisphere, and specifically in Africa. Nigerians bought 1.6 million bottles in 2013 (an increase of 15.9%), while South Africans purchased 1.1 million bottles (and increase of 46% by value). - AFP/Relaxnews, January 21, 2014.
