| ‘Seiobo There Below’ wins Best Translated honours Posted: 30 Apr 2014 12:30 AM PDT Krasznahorkai remained relatively undiscovered among English literary circles until relatively recently, when a new batch of translations ensured anglophones could catch up with the work of a writer already the subject of acclaim from critics and prize-giving committees from France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands as well as his own native Hungary. Debut novel "Satantango" told the tale of a Hungarian town occupied by a dark messiah. Having been originally published in 1985, it was provided in English by May 2012, and went on to scoop the Best Translated Book Award for 2013. For "Seiobo There Below", his fifth and most recent work, Krasznahorkai introduces readers to a Japanese goddess searching for examples of true beauty as she finds it during her travels upon earth. "In the end one thing was clear: out of a shortlist of ten contenders that did not lack for ambition, 'Seiobo There Below' truly overwhelmed us with its range," wrote 2014's judging panel. "This is a book that discusses in minute detail locations from all around the globe, including Japan, Spain, Italy, and Greece, as well as delving into the consciousnesses and practices of individuals from across 2,000 years of human history. "The book also takes bold steps forward in terms of how we think of the form of the novel, and our expectation of how a novel works and what it can attempt to do. In its scope, its depth, and its amazing precision, we found 'Seiobo There Below' to be a work of rare genius." Both translated books are made available in the US by independent house New Directions Publishing. In a video recorded at the New Directions office, Krasznahorkai thanked his publisher, editor, and his translator Ottilie Mulzet, saying "this is actually her prize". BTBA prizewinning authors and translators each receive a US$5,000 (RM16,300) sum underwritten by online retailer Amazon.com.
