Seven more footballers from Football League clubs in the north west of England have been arrested following a spot-fixing investigation by British authorities, taking the number suspected to 13.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) said today seven new arrests had been made as well as the re-arrest of six players held in December under suspicion of conspiracy to commit acts of bribery and money laundering.

"Officers from the NCA have been actively pursuing a number of lines of inquiry in this ongoing investigation," a statement said today.

"The NCA has today re-arrested the six original suspects based upon new evidence, along with a further seven footballers aged between 18 and 30 suspected of potential involvement in these offences.

"The seven men arrested in addition to the original six are from Football League clubs based in the North West of England.

"All 13 individuals are being interviewed at police stations across the country."

In December third tier club Oldham Athletic sacked winger Cristian Montano following the spot-fixing investigation.

The NCA's investigation began following revelations in British tabloid The Sun on Sunday. – Reuters, April 3, 2014.

Malaysia's challenge in the men's doubles competition of the Yonex Sunrise-BWF Metlife India Open Super Series badminton championships fizzled out even before the quarterfinals.

The only men's doubles pair that remained in the competition, Goh V Shem/Lim Khim Wah, lost 18-21, 21-15, 16-21 to South Korea's Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Choel after an intense three-set thriller which lasted 53 minutes.

"It is not so good thus far. All our men's double pairs lost already," doubles coach Rosman Razak told Bernama after the fourth pair was shown the exit at the Siri Fort Sports Complex today.

In the men's singles competition, world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei (pic) lived up to his top billing by strolling past India's Sourabh Varma 21-9, 21-6.

Chong Wei will meet India's Kashyap Parupalli in the quarterfinals tomorrow, the fourth time both will be meeting since the Indian player came on stage.

"As I said before I am just enjoying the game. So, I am not expecting anything specific (for tomorrow's match). I am just going to enjoy it," said Chong Wei.

Following Chong Wei's footsteps was the women's double pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei who beat Thailand's Duanganong Aroonkesorn/Kunchala
Voravichitchaikul 14-21, 21-18, 21-14.

"Hopefully tomorrow they can pull off an upset," he said.

Later today, mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing will go up against South Korea's Shin Baek Choel/Eom Hye Won.

Yesterday, Mohd Zakry Abdul Latiff/Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari lost to Japanese pair Kamura Takeshi/Sonada Keigo while Tan Boon Heong/Ow Yao Han lost to Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen. – Bernama, April 3, 2014.
