WWF-Malaysia to host sustainable seafood festival in June Posted: 29 May 2014 09:04 PM PDT Malaysians will have a chance to celebrate their love for seafood while protecting the health of our ocean at the first regional Sustainable Seafood Festival (SSF) from 7 to 8 June 2014 at The Intermark, Kuala Lumpur. The Save Our Seafood (S.O.S) Campaign by WWF-Malaysia in partnership with the Marine Stewardship Council will mark the inaugural celebration also to be held in Japan, Indonesia and Singapore as part of WWF's ongoing initiative to raise awareness on the global decline of fish stocks and to collaborate with the government, businesses and local communities towards achieving sustainable fisheries management. "It is important that we understand how our seafood choices impact the ocean. There is an urgent need to expand the sustainable seafood movement from how a consumer makes an ocean-friendly decision when shopping and dining to sustainable seafood sourcing by business and industry players," said WWF-Malaysia's Executive Director/CEO, Datuk Dr Dionysius Sharma. Dr. Sharma added that the sustainable seafood journey is a collective one that can potentially yield a transformative initiative that can ensure that we continue to enjoy local seafood in the future. "Malaysians are the biggest consumers of seafood in Southeast Asia and the average Malaysian consumes about 52kg of seafood per year. The SSF hopes to drive the message home on the role all of us can play in maintaining the health of our marine resources. Four hotels have also come on board as SSF partners in supporting Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council-certified products through a Sustainable Seafood Menu promotion at their respective outlets." Themed 'Hooked on Sustainable Seafood for a Healthy Ocean', the festival is held in conjunction with World Oceans Day and the Coral Triangle Day and will feature live cooking demonstrations, exhibitions, a seafood mascot design competition, an Art Jam and other exciting activities for members of the public.
