Bak kut teh, reinvented

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 04:51 PM PDT

James Tean — taking bak kut teh to a new and different level

PETALING JAYA, June 18 — It was the first time I had stepped into the newly-opened SStwo Mall, but you can be sure I will be back to the J Tean Kitchen. I had sampled a wide range of their dishes, most of which drew their flavours from bak kut teh spices, with some nifty tinkering in the kitchen.

Leading us through the tasting was James Tean, he of Tean's Gourmet fame, whose curry pastes and claypot bak kut teh spice mixes have been the life-saver of many homesick Malaysians living abroad. Back home, these have been on the shelves of every supermarket and even markets, so popular they are.

Curry rib spaghetti... slurpy good

The affable Tean describes himself as a food manufacturer who had a humble start as a maintenance mechanic for Nestle's Maggi brand in 1971. He kept a close watch on food production, learnt about the processes and experimented with a chilli sauce.

It grew so popular he sold the Life brand chilli sauce to KFC. Then he turned his energy to perfecting his brand — Claypot Bak Kut Teh — and Tean's curry pastes.

"I'm an R & D man," said Tean, which explained why once each business was up and running, he would turn it over to a management team.

Bak kut teh has been the passion of this Klang-based entrepreneur for the last 29 years. He even opened a small bak kut teh shop there, after paying a Klang bak kut teh cook RM8,000 to learn the trade!

The younger set is sure to fall in love with the J-Rib

"First the Claypot spice mix. When we sell it to housewives, they have the problem of which soya sauce to use. So I incorporate this into my mix. They just have to buy the meat, add two cloves of garlic and they can start cooking."

Now he wants to take his bak kut teh to another level, hence J Tean Kitchen. While the classic Klang Bak Kut Teh is still on the menu, now there are J-Ribs and the J-Knuckle, BKT Pork Burger, Braised Pork with Buns, J-Soup, J-Porky Pie, Curry Rib Spaghetti, and Lionhead, among several others.

New dishes not on the menu kept turning up for us to taste, such as the Braised Pork Knuckle (Yuen Tai), the Mantou Pork Burger, Stewed Chicken Feet with tofu and hard-boiled eggs and Wine Chicken.

Outstanding among these was the J-Knuckle (right pic), a crispy, deepfried one with the tender meat falling off the bone, and served with a Thai garlicky dip that had the sweet, sour and hot flavours well balanced.

The J-Ribs (left pic) tasted ordinary compared to the knuckle, but it will probably be a draw among younger diners because of the leaner meat on the ribs, and the light sweet sauce.

The J-Knuckle served with a Thai sauce is full of contrasting flavours

We all plumped for the BKT Burger, and we predict a bestseller with this. The meat patty had been fried, then lightly stewed with bak kut teh spices. There's just a hint of the spices; the pork patty is moist, with an onion relish giving it a tangy lift.

Have this meat patty within a fluffy mantou and it takes on a different dimension in texture and taste — it's simply scrumptious.

Dip a spoon through the puff pastry of the J-Porky Pie, and there's the punch of chilli and spices in the half-dry meat, and the delicious aroma and distinctive flavour of cuttlefish strips.

The Lionhead meatballs doused in a sweet sauce with chilli and served with mantou make light and fun bites. The Curry Rib Spaghetti was mildly hot, and is another "young" dish.

I would have enjoyed the Bak Kut Teh more with some crispy yu tiao, but the restaurant is still sourcing for these. The Braised Pork Knuckle was simply scrumptious, with the tender meat soaking in all essence of the gravy.

This is a must try: J-Porky pie

The Braised Pork Buns has light Chinese buns filled with half-fat meat braised in a bak kut teh gravy and garnished with vegetables. The filling was a little salty and overwhelmed the spiced meat within the delicate buns.

We tasted two desserts — the Golden Beach, a smooth, yummy blend of pumpkin and yam, with sago and small bits of waterchestnut in it , and the Malacca Rainbow with konyaku jelly and water chestnut in coconut milk and gula Melaka.

It's a restaurant that should appeal to a younger crowd, while piquing the interest of older people. Drum tables and stools, even "opium" bed seats for alfresco dining  give a distinctive old-new touch to the décor.

The food is reasonably priced: the light bites like the Braised Pork Bun is RM7.90, Porky Pie RM19.90, J-Knuckle RM38.90, J-Ribs RM34.90, Curry Rib Spaghetti RM19.90.

The BKT burger is totally yum!

J-Tean Kitchen is located at Lot G-58, Ground Floor SStwo Mall, No 40 Jalan SS2/72, Petaling Jaya. Tel: 03-7954 0819.

McIlroy stretches lead to six shots in record fashion

BETHESDA, Maryland, June 17 — Rory McIlroy stretched his US Open lead to six strokes today after a record-setting start to his second round at Congressional Country Club.

The 22-year-old Northern Irishman holed out his approach shot on the par-four eighth hole for eagle to reach 10 under par at the 111th US Open, the fastest any player had ever reached double digits below par in the championship.

McIlroy also birdied the fourth and sixth holes before his spectacular eagle, where he landed his second shot about 18 feet past the hole and watched it trickle down a slope and curl into the cup.

Even playing partner Phil Mickelson clapped in admiration at the shot by the Briton, who had led the Masters two months ago by four strokes heading into the final round before blowing his chances with a last-day 80.

The sensational play by McIlroy, who had yet to make a bogey and held a three-shot lead overnight, was threatening to turn the year's second major into a rout.

Closest to the young Briton was former Masters champion Zach Johnson, who eagled the sixth hole and had two birdies to cover the front nine in four-under 32, matching the score registered by McIlroy on a humid, overcast day.

Johnson, who posted an opening 71, stood at four-under, one clear of his fellow American Robert Garrigus, who was two-under for the day through 11 holes.

Also at three under par and yet to tee off was Yang Yong-eon of South Korea. The 2009 PGA champion was due to tee off for the second round at 1335 (1735 GMT).

Out on the course and tied for fifth place on two under par were Masters winner Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, who was one over through eight holes, and Spain's Sergio Garcia, who was even par as he made the turn.

Later starters who returned two-under-par 69s in the first round included British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen and American Ryan Palmer. — Reuters

Manchester United kick off title defence at West Brom

LONDON, June 17 — Manchester United will kick off their title defence at West Bromwich Albion on August 13, the Premier League said on Friday when they issued the fixture list for the new season.

Runners-up Chelsea, who are still to name their new manager following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season, are also away on the opening day when they head to FA Cup finalists Stoke City.

Newly promoted Swansea City, back in the top flight for the first time since 1983, will get an immediate taste of the high life with a trip to big-spending Manchester City, who won the FA Cup last season, finished third in the league and will be appearing in the Champions League for the first time.

The two other promoted teams, Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City, play at home against Bolton Wanderers and away at Wigan Athletic respectively.

Arsenal, hoping to win their first trophy in seven seasons, have a tricky start, travelling to Newcastle United where they drew 4-4 last season after leading 4-0 at halftime, before matches at home to revitalised Liverpool and away to champions United.

Arsene Wenger, who faced some criticism last season for the first time in nearly 15 years at Arsenal, is not helped by his side having to play in the Champions League playoff round in August, having missed out on qualifying directly for the group stage after finishing fourth.

Last season's top two do not have long to wait before their first match against each other, with Chelsea heading to Old Trafford on the weekend of September 17/18.

United won a record 19th English championship, and a 12th Premier League title under manager Alex Ferguson, last season and will start the new one as favourites with bookmakers Ladbrokes who give odds of 7-4 for United to retain the title, ahead of Chelsea at 5-2 and Manchester City at 7-2.

Liverpool, who improved under Kenny Dalglish in the second half of last season and are targeting a top four finish after two seasons adrift, begin at home against Sunderland.

However, Dalglish is unhappy about the timing of the new season, coming after midweek internationals.

"I would ask why the season is starting on a Saturday when there are friendlies the midweek before," he said.

"Clubs are doing their best to bring in good players and that usually means they are international players.

"There is a free week after the first weekend so I don't understand why we can't start the season on a Sunday to prevent players having to travel back on a Wednesday night in time for a Saturday start."

United, beginning to rebuild after losing the Champions League final to Barcelona, have brought in defender Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers, and as ever, have been linked to many others including Luka Modric of Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs, who finished fifth last season, are attempting to fight off all attempts to lure the Croatian away from White Hart Lane with manager Harry Redknapp saying his key midfielder was not for sale at any price.

Tottenham travel to United on the second weekend, which features several high calibre games, including Liverpool's trip to Arsenal and a north-east derby between Newcastle United and Sunderland.

Aston Villa, who named Alex McLeish as their new manager on Friday, despite the protests of fans angry at the arrival of the former Birmingham City manager at Villa Park, travel to Fulham who start a new era after the departure of Mark Hughes, with former Spurs boss Martin Jol in charge.

Opening fixtures: Blackburn Rovers v Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham v Aston Villa, Liverpool v Sunderland, Manchester City v Swansea City, Newcastle United v Arsenal, Queens Park Rangers v Bolton Wanderers, Stoke City v Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur v Everton, West Bromwich Albion v Manchester United, Wigan Athletic v Norwich City — Reuters

Top 10 whitewater rafting destinations

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 07:15 AM PDT

NEW YORK, June 17 — If you're keen to beat the sweltering summer temperatures and embrace adventure you might consider cooling off with a whitewater rafting trip. Online travel adviser Cheapflights (www.cheapflights.com) offers its top 10 whitewater rafting destinations to experience the thrills and chills of this splashy adventure sport. Reuters has not endorsed this list:

1. Grand Canyon National Park, United States

Sign up for a single- or multi-day excursion on rivers that wind through America's most astounding natural wonder - the Grand Canyon. Spend hours, days - even weeks - on a professionally guided tour of waterways that range from placid to downright wild. Start at Glen Canyon Dam at the northeast part of the gorge and, from there, let your tour director - or your own paddle, should you choose - be your guide.

2. Ottawa River, Canada

The Ottawa River does a lot more than distinguish the border between Quebec and Ontario. The behemoth waterway is also Canada's most popular destination for rafting and kayaking. Luke-warm waters attract families and die-hard rafters each summer to steer through a valley thought to be more than 175 million years old. Take the kids for a leisurely paddle, or put on helmets with more competitive friends and race down the wondrous archipelago at top speed.

3. Glacier National Park, United States

Travelers aiming to combine whitewater rafting with other outdoor excursions need look no further than Flathead River in Montana's Glacier National Park. More than a million acres of preserved ecosystem and 700 milesof walkable trails make this nature lover's paradise an ideal spot for hiking and, of course, rafting. Pilot your inflatable vessel along the 158 miles of pure, unadulterated water, sourced directly from the Rocky Mountains.

4. Magpie River, Canada

It'll take you eight days to steer the escalating rapids of Quebec's Magpie River. Pitch a tent along this scenic stretch of river and savor its splendor, including the northern lights, in between day-long floats. Grade V rapids - the toughest classification recommended to raft - will greet you at the end of your week-long journey at Magpie Falls, a 125-foot vision of cascading water.

5. Pacuare River, Costa Rica

Also known as the Rio Pacuare, Costa Rica's Pacuare River is a delightful escape with varying degrees of difficulty that last approximately 67 miles. Divided into the Upper Upper, Upper, and Lower sections, the river's range of difficulty spans from Grade II to V - perfect for novice and veteran rafters alike. Surrounded completely by acres of lush rainforests, sailing down the Pacuare toward the Caribbean may mean introducing yourself to Costa Rica's wildlife, like monkeys, exotic birds and jaguars.

6. Futaleufu River, Chile

Arguably the best river in the world for experienced rafters to tackle, Chile's Futaleufu River offers both spectacular views and intense rapids. The stream, which cascades from lakes in the Los Alerces National Park and the Andes Mountains, is renowned for its deep-blue waters and Grade V drops. Recommended for skilled rafters with years of experience, the Futaleufu serves up long stretches of excitement at a time like the Wild Mile, a series of rapids that'll keep any athlete on his or her toes - scratch that - seat.

7. Apurimac River, Peru

Earning bragging rights for rafting part of the world's largest river is reason enough to fly to southern Peru for a rafting trip this year. The Apurimac River sources the Amazon, providing kayakers and whitewater rafters a chance to see South America's magnificent wilderness up close. Grade IV rapids - and a four-day commitment - attract skilled rafters with an appreciation for camping and the great outdoors.

8. Zambezi River, Zimbabwe and Zambia

Only expert rafters should attempt to tackle the intense swells and challenging rapids that the Zambezi River is so wildly famous for. Separated into the upper and middle Zambezi by Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the river is nearly 1,600 miles of nature at its finest. Look for hippopotamuses and crocodiles along calmer stretches of the river, and brace yourself for massive drops and death-defying rapids along the no-nonsense parts, including the Batoka Gorge.

9. White Nile, Uganda

Maneuvering a boat full of rafters along the Bujagali Falls near the mouth of Lake Victoria is an adventure you'll never forget. The White Nile, a tributary of the actual Nile River, flows through Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Inexpensive rafting companies have set up shop near the most exciting part of the river in Uganda, combining world-class rafting with an introduction to Africa's astonishing landscape. Grade V rapids ease into harmonious currents, promising rafters both relaxation and thrills in a single afternoon.

10. North Johnstone River, Australia

The four- or six-day expedition along the North Johnstone River in North Queensland's World Heritage rainforests is considered one of the best travel adventures in the world. Ride a helicopter to the beginning of your unforgettable journey and wind your way through Grade V rapids and truly amazing scenery. Not for the faint of heart, North Johnstone offers days on end of the most demanding - and rewarding - whitewater rafting out there. — Reuters

Income disparity causes unhappiness, says study

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:21 AM PDT

NEW YORK, June 17 — As the rich get richer and the poor fall further behind, levels of happiness and satisfaction drop, but only among people with modest and lower incomes, a new study shows.

The finding holds true for about 60 per cent of Americans, according to research that will be published in the journal Psychological Science.

"Income disparity has grown a lot in the US, especially since the 1980s. With that, we've seen a marked drop in life satisfaction and happiness," said Shigehiro Oishi, a psychologist at the University of Virginia.

"In general, CEO salary increased tremendously, while that of the average workers hasn't that much," he said in an interview.

"I think you can take any occupation in the US and the disparity grew."

The researchers assessed the link between income disparity and unhappiness by analysing data from more than 48,000 people who responded to the General Social Survey between the years of 1972 and 2008.

They compared their sense of how honest other Americans were with their income and a scientific measure of national income equality.

The researchers found that the bigger the disparity in the income gap, the less likely people are to view fellow Americans as fair or honest. This, in turn, leads to a degraded sense of general well-being.

"We originally thought economic factors might explain this all, but they don't," he said. "When people see that some people are really in advantageous and favorable conditions while many of us are not, lack of trust toward the system and toward others naturally emerges."

The study also found that economic inequality does not bother the wealthiest Americans. The richest 20 per cent reported that income disparity didn't change their feelings of fairness, trust, or general well-being.

Oishi said the findings may support progressive tax reforms in which the rich pay more and the poor pay less.

"Certainly, any policies that try to reduce income inequality would seem to be good if we care about the average happiness of Americans," he said. — Reuters

Steven Spielberg brainstorming ‘Jurassic Park 4’

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 08:33 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES, June 17 —  Steven Spielberg has dinosaurs back on the brain lately.

In addition to the launch in the fall of his executive-produced television series "Terra Nova" on Fox, Spielberg has been meeting with screenwriter Mark Protosevich to kick around ideas for a reboot of the "Jurassic Park" franchise.

Several years ago, the director worked with Protosevich on a potential remake of Chan-wook Park's "Oldboy", which would have starred Will Smith. That film ran into rights problems and didn't come to fruition, but Spielberg, who directed the first two Jurassic Park films and was an executive producer on the third, has since met twice with Protosevich to fashion a story for a potential fourth film.

Both Universal, which released the trilogy, and Spielberg's camp stress that no one has been engaged to write a script, and that the discussions have been purely exploratory. But the idea is kind of a no-brainer.

The franchise, born of the late Michael Crichton's 1990 novel, has been stuck in amber since 2001, when Joe Johnston directed "Jurassic Park III" from a script by Peter Buchman, Jim Taylor and Alexander Payne.

That last entry signalled the series' fading fortunes, as it grossed just US$369 million (RM1.1 billion) worldwide. "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" grossed US$915 million and US$619 million respectively.

Spielberg's original 1993 film adaptation, which came on the heels of James Cameron's groundbreaking "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", greatly advanced CGI technology in its depiction of colossal dinosaurs re-animated in the modern day.

With the recent rebirth of 3D and soaring improvements in digital design marshalled by everyone from Cameron to Pixar, "Jurassic Park" is ripe for evolution into a 21st century phenomenon.

And Universal could use the revived sci-fi tentpole. The "Fast and the Furious" franchise remains healthy, but "The Mummy" has lost momentum, the "Bourne" series lost star Matt Damon (a reboot with Jeremy Renner is in the works), and "The Hulk", "Van Helsing", "The Wolfman" and "Land of the Lost" never caught fire.

"Battleship", a costly adaptation of the board game, remains a gamble for summer 2012 but could spark a new alien-related franchise.

Stampeding dinosaurs endangering humans, fighting each other and smashing things never gets old, and Cameron showed how far an ambitious filmmaker can push an integrated, immersive 3D world with "Avatar". A new Spielberg-produced Jurassic Park that takes full advantage of those tools could be (pre)historic.

Protosevich recently had a story credit on Marvel Studios' "Thor", and he is working on an adaptation of the Ape Entertainment comic "Freakshow", which he would also direct. He co-wrote the screenplay for "I Am Legend" and wrote both "The Cell" and "Poseidon".

Spielberg is finishing up "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" and "War Horse", both scheduled for holiday releases. He next plans to direct "Lincoln". — Reuters

Susan Boyle story to be turned into musical

LONDON, June 17 — Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who shot to stardom in 2009 when her performance on a television singing contest became an internet hit, will see her life portrayed on stage in a musical.

"I Dreamed a Dream", named after the title of the song she sang that made her an overnight celebrity, will tour internationally from next year after premiering at Theatre Royal in Newcastle, England, on March 23.

"I never thought my life story would end up on the stage but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect," Boyle said in a statement.

"I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way."

Boyle will be played by actress Elaine Smith, best known for her role in the British comedy series "Rab C Nesbitt", and a favourite of Boyle's.

Boyle's rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" was viewed some 300 million times on the YouTube video sharing site, and within days she was a global singing sensation.

Under the tutelage of music producer Simon Cowell, who was a judge on "Britain's Got Talent" when Boyle performed, she has gone on to record two albums and sell some 14 million copies.

Producer Michael Harrison said of the show: "It's got all the qualities of a fairytale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true."

According to the Daily Telegraph, a 26-week tour of the Britain, the United States and Australia has been lined up so far. — Reuters

"Mereka akan berdepan dengan polis. Saya berharap mereka melakukan perkara sama. Kami melihat ia dari sudut yang sah dan tiada sesiapa yang akan terlepas dari undang-undang," tambah beliau.

Jika semuanya menjadi kenyataan, maka tiga kumpulan itu akan bertembung pada hari dan berarak ke Istana Negara.

Darihal YB Tian Chua, YB Seng Giau

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:12 PM PDT

Bertuah!

YB Seng Giau termangu sedikit hendak memulakan makan. Mulanya disangka tidak bersudu. Pelayan kami, Kassim Sabu, adik Mohamad Sabu, Timbalan Presiden PAS baru datang membawa sudu dan garpu diletakkan di sebelah pinggan Seng Giau.

Tetapi dia bukan mahukan sudu dan garpu. Dia mahu air basuh tangan. "Lebih senang makan dengan tangan," ujarnya.

Kassim bergegas ke meja sebelah mengambil bekas basuh tangan dan menjurus air ke tangan kanan Dr. Tan. Dia selesa dan berselera makan masakan Melayu itu.

Orang-orang Melayu di meja-meja lain menggunakan garpu tetapi YB yang berkawan dengan PAS ini senang makan dengan tangan.

Kata saya, "Ini semua mencabar kemelayuan semua orang Melayu.

Menteri-Menteri pun hari Jumaat saja berbaju Melayu. Kalau hari-hari lain Tain Chua pula berpakaian Melayu, bagaimana?

What’s so “dirty” about Bersih 2.0 rally?

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 05:05 PM PDT

JUNE 17 — We've heard it all. Dire warnings issued, threats yelled out, police reports filed, scathing commentaries published in incredulous and incredible news sheets. And all this prior to the planned Bersih 2.0 rally on July 9, 2011 in Kuala Lumpur.

If these "noises" were to be believed, our collective mind would be filled to the brim with mental pictures of Bersih participants, in the worrying words of Perkasa boss Ibrahim Ali, throwing stones and burning cars!

Why, these people might even go the whole hog and work themselves into a frenzy on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, wildly throwing Molotov cocktails into the tourist spots of, say, Bukit Bintang, storming the Parliament building, running amok and attacking whoever dare come their way.

Additionally, such wild and irresponsible behaviour, as this impression suggests, would have horrible consequences for members of the general public as it would hurt hard, for instance, the pockets of businesspeople, taxi drivers, and even hawkers, not to mention the immense traffic jam that would clog the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur. And, lo and behold, their rash and violent actions would be a dangerous threat to "national security."

But is Bersih 2.0 really the wily monster that it has been made out to be? Are they really a motley people who desire is nothing but to behave unruly on the streets and cause riots along the way? Are they so politically mischievous that groups like Perkasa are prompted and compelled to call to jihad to protect "public security"?

The last time I checked, the first Bersih rally was relatively peaceful and successful in Kuala Lumpur. Bersih 2.0 is a civil society group, assures its chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, which plans to organise a peaceful street demonstration with the aim of bringing to the attention of the general public a list of demands pertaining to the manner by which elections are held in the country.

By no stretch of the imagination can this primary objective be considered as being synonymous to breaking the law and pushing the country down a slope to anarchy and disrepute.

And the fact that the Bersih group holds dearly the notion of democracy and the right to expression and peaceful assembly explains why Ambiga respects the democratic right of other groups in the civil society, such as the right-wing Perkasa, to oppose her group in a peaceful fashion. In other words, Bersih has as much right as Perkasa to stage a peaceful demonstration in Kuala Lumpur, a right that is enshrined in the country's constitution.

Besides, one would think – and hope – that the law enforcement agencies would see to it that the street demonstrations remain civil and peaceful and that possible emergence of agents provocateurs would be quelled. Additionally, traffic jams would be kept to the minimum by these agencies so as to lessen the inconvenience possibly faced by the KL road users.

And if it seems too risky a venture to have both parties jeering at each other at close range, then the police may want to direct them to opposite directions. Or, allow them to demonstrate on a different day to avoid verbal, and perhaps physical, confrontation.

For some strange twist of logic, Bersih 2.0 has also been accused by certain groups or individuals of being anti-Malay and anti-Islam. Again, this boggles the mind of morally upright and concerned Malaysians as the campaign that is being forged by Bersih 2.0 is aimed at gaining a universal appeal as shown below – and not one that promotes the interests of a certain ethnicity or faith against those of other communities.

A visit to the Bersih 2.0 website reveals, among other things, that their demands are to: (a) clean the electoral roll; (b) reform postal vote; (c) use indelible ink for voting; (d) have free and fair access to media; (e) to have minimum 21 days of campaign period; (f) strengthen public institutions such as the Election Commission, and the judiciary; (g) stop corruption; and (h) cease dirty politics.

In short, these are meant to ensure that the playing field is even to all and sundry, which should be in the interest and concern of all Malaysians, irrespective of ethnic and religious backgrounds, who treasure democracy, fairness, justice, transparency and accountability.

Surely these demands for electoral reform and justice are not against the true teachings of Islam and other revealed religions. If anything, the respective followers of these religions are enjoined to fight against material corruption and the corruption of public institutions in the long march towards strengthening democracy.

As if this isn't enough to insult our intelligence, someone had put forward a suggestion that the forthcoming Bersih 2.0 rally be held in a stadium away from the attention and scrutiny of the larger society. To be sure, street demos are not meant to be confined to a closed area as we would musical concerts such as Lady Gaga's, Justin Bieber's and other forms of gigs.

Thus, when you think of the good things that Bersih 2.0 is helping to champion for the betterment of our society, you can't help but suspect that the ugly depictions or premonitions of the forthcoming rally are merely desperate attempts by certain quarters to divert the attention of concerned Malaysians away from the vital issues of free and fair election, democracy, transparency, accountability and freedoms of expression and of assembly. Or, is the rumbling from the likes of Perkasa calculated to merely "offer" justification to the powers-that-be to stop the Bersih 2.0 rally from happening?

To reiterate, a free and fair election would go a long way towards strengthening democracy, the benefits of which can be gained by almost everyone, including the businesspeople, hawkers, taxi drivers, taxpayers etc.

Surely, it's not dirty thinking on the part of concerned Malaysians to crave for a Bersih Malaysia!
