Erawan: Chef Korn’s take on Chinese New Year

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 05:04 PM PST

The fabulous Yee Sang featuring more than 100 ingredients!

PETALING JAYA, Feb 16 — Chef Korn of the award-winning Erawan Classic Thai & Fusion Restaurant in Petaling Jaya never fails to surprise but he may just have outdone himself with his Prosperity Yee Sang as it features more than 100 ingredients!

It is absolutely delicious and half the fun during the eating is trying to name the different ingredients as you pick up chopstick-fuls into your mouth!

Dried fruits and nuts, alfalfa, pomegranate, enoki mushrooms, pineapple, beetroot, guava, sweet corn, kidney beans, pickled garlic, water chestnut, honeyed ginkgo nuts and gold leaf can be found among the traditional pomelo, Korean pear, carrot, radish, pickled ginger, cucumber, flour crackers, jellyfish and salmon sashimi.

So colourful... glutinous rice shrimp balls. Yummy!

All these ingredients are tossed together with a special sauce made up of roasted chilli paste, Thai red curry paste, fish sauce, palm sugar, pineapple juice, tamarind juice, coconut milk and lime juice.

We had this amazing yee sang with Thai nuances at a pre-Chinese New Year celebration. "Just nuts and dried fruits comprised 60 ingredients already," Korn told us later. "The vegetables, nuts, seeds and dried fruits are all organic. I kept adding ingredients — there are 105 in all. This yee sang is so healthy."

Already his mind is working on how to incorporate a version of this dish into his regular menu where even two people can share it. "I will also add in some edible flowers."

The Fish Maw Soup that followed after the yee sang was fabulous. The fish maw had been simmered in an abalone and scallop sauce together with black mushrooms. It was topped with a fat knob of Alaskan crabmeat and served with pickled green chillies and black vinegar. The chillies and vinegar gave the soup a tart, hot lift.

The Crispy Rolls are presented in a very interesting manner.

The Shrimp Balls wrapped in red, orange, purple and green glutinous rice which was our next course were full of oomph. The tasty sticky rice barely covered the bouncy shrimp ball that oozed fragrant aromas of coriander root, pepper and garlic. "It's very fresh prawns blended with just egg white and very cold water for the texture. It's good for tea time," said Korn.

Since the last time we ate the Crispy Rolls, they have taken a new form — a cone! There was a whole betel leaf in it together with vermicelli and a chunk of crabmeat dipped in tempura batter and deepfried, and fresh crabmeat at the bottom. A red curry sauce brought it all together. They are attractively presented in a holder with a jar of the sauce.

Korn said he was bored with the Pomelo Salad, so he deconstructed it, added more ingredients which then allows the diner to play around with them to produce at least 16 different flavours. The Pomelo Platter has four types of seafood — prawns, scallops, deepfried crispy tuna and Alaskan crab — which you can then eat with four types of fruit such as Taiwan pomelo, Thai pomelo, grapefruit and navel orange, topped with crushed peanuts and kerisik and a spicy Thai sauce.

So we mixed and matched: crispy tuna with grapefruit, scallop with Taiwan pomelo, crab with orange and prawn with Thai pomelo, and changed the pairing again. Each match brought different flavours which titillated the palate as the chef had predicted.

The "new" Pomelo Platter... many different taste combinations (left). Fancy durian in your curry? The Massaman Durian Curry is fabulous. (right)

Thailand has a fairly large number of Chinese who are Teochews, and Braised Duck Teochew style is quite common on a Thai menu. I was wowed by the tender, spice-infused, delicate duck which had gone through an elaborate cooking process. It had been bathed with hot oil after having dark soya sauce rubbed all over it, then boiled to get rid of any gamey smell. After that it was an hour of simmering with sauce, herbs and spices, with a chunk of ginger inside the duck, before being hung out to dry.

I also loved the Roast Duck with Mee Sua, the noodles having been fried first.

Have you ever had durian in a curry? It was a first for me and it worked — the sticky smooth unripe Thai durian that tasted almost like potato in the Massaman curry, and since there was a slight durian aroma, only chicken would go with it. I liked the bite of the durian, and altogether it was a divine curry. "It's my family's secret recipe," said Korn.

Try the Durian Platter for dessert... you won't regret it.

More durian came in the desserts — Durian Platter and Candied Durian. In the Durian Platter, an awesome durian ice cream, pure durian and black sticky rice drizzled with coconut cream satisfied my durian craving. Candied Durian had a delightful semi-ripe durian simmered in syrup and finished with coconut cream.

There was the Mango Platter, with the Thai water lily mango, pandan sticky rice and coconut ice cream. The Banana Platter presented a candied banana topped with peanuts, and coconut ice cream. These popular desserts have been updated and given a whole different taste sensation.

The restaurant will close from February 25 till March 14 so go sample the Chinese New Year specials now.

Most of the new dishes are posted online at http://www.erawan-classicthai.com/. You have to order the main courses in advance.

Erawan Classic Thai and Fusion is located at No. 22-1, Jalan PJU 5/16, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya (Tel: 03-6141-2393).

The Braised Duck Teochew Style at Erawan is delicious.

New El Bulli movie in the works

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 — Another movie studio is set to immortalise Spanish chef Ferran Adrià's shuttered restaurant El Bulli, this time based on the eatery's final year and the interpersonal dramas that played out between chefs.

Based on Lisa Abend's book The Sorcerer's Apprentices: A Season in the Kitchen at Ferran Adrià's elBulli, the film will "mix" fact and fiction, says Vendome Pictures, which will be producing the movie.

For her book, food journalist Abend was given behind-the-scenes access to the El Bulli kitchen in 2009, where she was privy to the rigorous training programme and the inevitable human dramas that unfolded among the kitchen's brigade of young, ambitious chefs.

Every year, out of 3,000 applicants, only 32 were chosen to apprentice in Adrià's kitchen, where they would work 14-hour days in a triple Michelin-starred restaurant 160 km north of Barcelona, also named the best restaurant in the world five times by Restaurant magazine.

Adrià shuttered the restaurant in 2011 at the height of its popularity, when the eatery was the foodie's ultimate pilgrimage site, drawing two million reservation requests annually for 8,000 seatings.

The film, written by screenwriter David Wilson, is expected to begin production this year.

In 2011, German filmmaker Gereon Wetzel also released a documentary on the restaurant, entitled El Bulli: Cooking in Progress, which captured the kitchen as chefs boiled, roasted, fried, steamed, spherified and vacuum-packed foods in culinary alchemy.

El Bulli will reopen next year as The El Bulli Foundation, touted as a culinary research and development centre. — AFP/Relaxnews

HRT cars sold to Spanish recycling firm and Pirelli

LONDON, Feb 15 — A Spanish auto breaker and parts recycler has bought five cars raced by the defunct HRT Formula One team while another chassis has gone to tyre maker Pirelli, the businessman who acquired them said today.

Teo Martin, owner of the Madrid-based auto-recycling company that bears his name, told Reuters by telephone that he had bought most of the material assets of the failed Spanish-based team.

He said the direct sale included three 2012 cars raced by Indian Narain Karthikeyan and Spaniard Pedro de la Rosa, minus the Cosworth engines and Williams gearboxes which have been returned to those companies.

A Cosworth spokesman confirmed the engines had been recovered by them.

Teo Martin said he also had two 2011 cars, one complete, and a scale model of the 2012 car as well as most of the garage equipment.

"The other 2011 car has gone to Pirelli," he said.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Italian company, who have been using a 2010 Renault car for their most recent private tyre testing after entering the sport as sole supplier in 2011. They had previously used a 2009 Toyota.

The Spaniard, whose company posted a photograph of one of the cars on the Twitter feed @DesguacesTeo, would not reveal how much he had paid for the cars but said he intended to sell them on to any interested parties.

HRT failed to score a point in three years in Formula One and missed a November deadline to pay entry fees of US$500,000 (RM1.5 million) for this season.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone told Reuters in December that he understood HRT had gone into liquidation, after owners Thesan Capital had put the team up for sale that same month.

However Formtech Composites, one of the team's suppliers owed a "substantial" amount of money, said in a statement in December that they believed the ownership of the team had been transferred to a Luxembourg-registered fund.

De la Rosa has now moved to Ferrari as a test driver helping compatriot Fernando Alonso while Karthikeyan is still exploring his options.

Despite the apparent demise of HRT, media reports last month claimed a group of Canadian and American investors were trying to revive the team and secure an entry slot using the 2012 cars with Cosworth engines and Williams gearboxes. — Reuters

ROME, Feb 15 — AS Roma's Pablo Osvaldo and Daniele De Rossi could miss tomorrow's Serie A home game against leaders Juventus because of injuries.

Italy striker Osvaldo, who has been at the centre of a penalty controversy after stealing a spot kick from Francesco Totti and missing it during their 3-1 defeat at Sampdoria last Sunday, missed training today with a right knee injury, Sky Sport 24 reported.

Midfielder De Rossi is suffering from a knock to his left thigh and is undergoing a special training schedule to get him ready for the clash.

Roma are ninth in Serie A with 34 points from 24 games, 21 points behind champions Juve. — Reuters

Pakistani killed in fresh clash with India in Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, Feb 15 — A Pakistani was killed after crossing into the Indian side of Kashmir, officials on both sides said today, but their competing accounts indicated that tension remains high a month after the worst outbreak of violence in years in the disputed region.

The Pakistani army said one of its soldiers yesterday inadvertently strayed across the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the mountain territory.

It said civilians had seen him being picked up and questioned by the Indian military, but that when the military commanders from both sides spoke by telephone today, the Indian commander said the Pakistani had been killed.

"We condemn such an inhuman and brutal act of killing our soldier after he had identified himself and explained his position," the army said in a text message. "We have returned Indian soldiers in the past who have similarly strayed."

But an Indian defence spokesman said there had been a firefight in the Rajouri district after two militants in combat dress crossed the LoC from Pakistan. He said one militant had been killed and an Indian soldier injured.

"Our troops continuously tracked their movement and they were asked to surrender when they entered over 200 metres inside Indian territory," spokesman S.N. Acharya said. "They opened fire indiscriminately, to which our men retaliated, and in the exchange of fire one militant was killed."

Last month, three Pakistani and two Indian soldiers were killed in a series of attacks along the LoC.

India said the body of one of its slain soldiers had been decapitated, which provoked public outrage in India, and in uncharacteristically blunt language Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said there could be "no business as usual" with Pakistan.

Now both nuclear-armed, India and Pakistan have fought three wars since becoming independent from Britain in 1947, two of them over Kashmir. — Reuters

Islamists rally against violence in Egypt

CAIRO, Feb 15 — Thousands of Islamists protested in Cairo today against violence that has marred anti-government demonstrations, showing support for President Mohamed Mursi, the Muslim Brotherhood politician elected head of state last year.

The "Together against Violence" rally was called by a hardline Salafi Islamist group that waged an armed revolt against the state in the 1990s.

Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya, whose leadership renounced violence more than a decade ago, has entered mainstream politics since autocratic president Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011.

The Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party said it backed Friday's rally in a symbolic way but did not mobilise supporters for the event, meaning the numbers were smaller than at previous Islamist protests.

Around 60 people have been killed in Egypt since late January in unrest touched off by the anniversary of the uprising against Mubarak and exacerbated by a court ruling that sentenced 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster a year ago.

It has been the worst bloodshed since Mursi assumed office, underlining the instability that continues to thwart government efforts to restore a sense of normalcy and revive an economy in crisis by attracting fresh investment and tourism.

The unrest has been stirred by anger at Mursi and his Islamist backers, who the opposition says have betrayed the revolution and sought to monopolise power — accusations dismissed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Repeating the pattern of recent weeks, Mursi's opponents rallied again today, this time gathering outside El-Quba, one of the presidential palaces in the northern suburbs of Cairo. The activists dubbed it "Checkmate Friday".

The protesters numbered several hundred by early afternoon.

WARNING FROM CLERIC

Recent protests have routinely turned violent, with government buildings, police stations and the presidential palace coming under fire from petrol bombs and rocks.

But, "the person who came (to power) through ballot boxes will not leave by petrol bombs," said a cleric who led the crowd in Friday prayers as the rally got under way outside Cairo University. "He who came to power by direct, free choice will not leave by the rocks thrown by children."

The crowd grew to several thousand after prayer.

"No to Violence. Yes to sharia (Islamic law)," declared a banner held aloft from the crowd. "With our blood and souls we will sacrifice ourselves for Islam!" chanted the crowd. "The people want an iron fist," read another banner.

Some people journeyed in from the provinces for the rally. At one point, the mother of Khaled al-Islambouli, one of the Islamists behind President Anwar Sadat's 1981 assassination, appeared on stage, drawing cheers as she waved to the crowd.

"Mohamad Mursi is a legitimate leader who was elected by the will of the people," said Mohamad Omar, from Mansoura, north of the capital. He came on a bus chartered by al-Gama'a al-Islamiya.

"The opposition's methods of violence, petrol bomb-throwing, igniting fires and causing destruction is not accepted by the Islamists," added Alaa Abdulwahab, a 45-year old who had travelled from Minya, a four-hour journey south of Cairo.

Mursi's most prominent liberal and leftist opponents have distanced themselves from the violence, saying they support only peaceful agitation. Islamist leaders and their rivals all renounced violence at crisis talks on January 31 chaired by al-Azhar, a Sunni Muslim seat of religious learning.

Islamist groups such as al-Gama'a al-Islamiya were repressed by Mubarak during his 30 years in power. But they have moved into the heart of public life since his fall, alarming secular-minded Egyptians who worry they aim to dominate the new Egypt. — Reuters

Benedict — a resignation foretold, if you knew where to look

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:24 AM PST

VATICAN CITY, Feb 15 — Pope Benedict's resignation on Monday shocked many in the Roman Catholic world and beyond, yet for those who know where to look, there were portents aplenty.

Take Nanni Moretti's 2011 comedy-drama "Habemus Papam" — "We have a pope!" — in which a depressed and panic-stricken newly-elected pope escapes his Vatican minders for a few days before returning to announce, in his first address, that he doesn't have what it takes for the job.

Benedict, 85, managed almost eight years before citing old age and deteriorating health on Monday to explain his decision to become the first pope in more than 700 years to resign willingly rather than die in office.

For a pope, he said, "both strength of mind and body are necessary", going on to ask for "pardon for all my defects".

The Italian Sky Cinema channel has not missed its chance to rerun "Habemus Papam", where Michel Piccoli's fictional pope says that "the Church needs a guide who has the strength to bring great changes", and also asks for forgiveness.

Moretti, whose film had received a cool response from the Church, has been bombarded with calls from journalists.

"What am I supposed to say?" he told the daily La Repubblica, graciously admitting to being as amazed as everyone else by Benedict's decision. "Every now and then cinema manages to anticipate reality."

But his film was not the only omen in Rome.

Last year, Luigi Bettazzi, the retired bishop of Ivrea who has known the former Joseph Ratzinger for 50 years, speculated that some day he might choose to step down instead of reigning for life if he felt he could no longer run the Church properly.

"I wish him a long life and lasting lucidity but I think that, if the moment arrives when he sees that things are changing, I think he has the courage to resign," Bettazzi told RAI television.

At the time, the Vatican said there was no serious chance that Benedict could step down. But in fact, there were signs from Benedict himself.

Twice as pope he prayed before the remains of St Celestine, who in 1294 as Celestine V was the last pontiff to stand down willingly, and returned to his former life as a hermit. To do so, he first had to issue a decree allowing popes to resign.

If anyone wondered about Benedict's interest, they might have found a clue in a long interview that he gave to the German journalist Peter Seewald for his 2010 book, Light of the World:

"If a pope clearly realises that he is no longer physically, psychologically and spiritually capable of handling the duties of his office," Benedict said, "then he has a right, and under some circumstances also an obligation, to resign." — Reuters

‘Downton Abbey’ star Maggie Smith never watches TV show

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 01:02 AM PST

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 — Maggie Smith's sarcastic dowager Countess may be the star of British period drama "Downton Abbey," but the award-winning actress says she has never watched the TV series.

Maggie Smith's snobbish Lady Grantham and her withering remarks like "No-one wants to kiss a girl in black," and "What is a weekend?", have made her the biggest star on "Downton Abbey". — Pic courtesy of PBS.

Smith, 78, who has won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for her role as the acid-tongued Lady Grantham, tells CBS in an upcoming TV interview that she is amazed by the popularity of the show both in Britain and the United States.

Asked whether she is proud of "Downton Abbey", Smith said, "I haven't actually seen it. So I don't, I don't sit down and watch it," she told CBS reporter Steve Kroft in the interview to be broadcast on Sunday.

"Never?" Kroft asked. "No, I haven't watched it," Smith replied, according to an advance excerpt released yesterday.

Smith, known as a perfectionist, said that watching herself would make her worry about her performance. "It's frustrating. I always see things that I would like to do differently and think, 'Oh, why in the name of God did I do that?'"

"Downton Abbey," a drama about the lives of aristocratic Britons and their servants in the early 20th century, attracted some 7.9 million viewers for its third season premiere in January on US television.

Smith's snobbish Lady Grantham and her withering remarks like "No-one wants to kiss a girl in black," and "What is a weekend?", have made her the show's biggest star.

Smith also has two Oscars for her roles in 1969 film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" and 1978 comedy "California Suite" but she said she had no interest in her recent fame. The actress is a rare face at Hollywood award ceremonies.

"I don't feel any different to the way I felt before and I'm not quite sure what (being a star) means. I am familiar to people now, which is what I was not before," she told Kroft. "That is entirely due to the television set."

Smith also acknowledged her reputation as an actress who doesn't suffer fools gladly.

"Old people are scary and I have to face it, I am old and I am scary and I am very sorry about it, but I don't know what you do," she quipped.

The full interview can be seen on "60 Minutes" on February 17 on CBS television. — Reuters

Stereo learning: Infants distinguish between languages

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 05:15 AM PST

BOSTON, Feb 15 — Even before they can talk, infants as young as seven months who grow up in bilingual homes acquire a special ability to distinguish between languages, researchers said yesterday.

Scientists are still baffled by the mechanics of language learning, and how bilingual infants master their mother tongues as efficiently as monolinguals do.

A new study to shed light on the subject revealed that children who learn two languages at the same time develop the ability, which monolinguals do not, to identify a language through the duration and pitch of words, and their position in a sentence.

The study, reported in the journal Nature Neuroscience, examined seven-month-old children who grow up with two languages with inverse word orders — such as English and Japanese.

In languages like English, Italian or Spanish, prepositions and articles typically precede "content words" like nouns (to London/the house) while in other tongues they follow them (Tokyo ni — 'Tokyo to' in Japanese, or etxe bat — 'house a' in Basque), and the pitch of the content word is higher.

The test involved familiarising the infants, through repetition, to one of two fake languages — one with the rhythm of the English group of languages, the other resembling the Japanese group.

"Phrases" were then played for the kids over hidden speakers, both in the language they learnt and the one they did not, measuring the time they looked in the direction of each.

The bilingual babies "looked several seconds longer" in the direction of the language they had been exposed to — a scientific measure of recognition, study co-author Janet Werker told AFP.

When the same test was done with monolingual infants growing up in English homes, they made no distinction.

"Our study showed... that infants growing up bilingual in languages that have a different word order are able to use these word duration and pitch cues, whereas infants growing up monolingual are not," said Werker.

"If you speak two languages at home, don't be afraid, it's not a zero-sum game. Your baby is very equipped to keep these languages separate and they do so in remarkable ways."

The team said their work demonstrated how studying bilingual infants can reveal mechanisms of language acquisition.

"As the majority of the world's population today is exposed to multiple languages from birth, a better understanding of their early cognitive development might have considerable impact on social and educational policies world-wide," they wrote.

"Further work will be necessary to explore how the beginnings uncovered in our study develop into full-fledged competence."

The study was presented yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston. — AFP/Relaxnews

Ancient asteroid strike in Australia ‘changed face of earth’

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 04:04 AM PST

SYDNEY, Feb 15 — A strike from a big asteroid more than 300 million years ago left a huge impact zone buried in Australia and changed the face of the earth, researchers said today.

"The dust and greenhouse gases released from the crater, the seismic shock and the initial fireball would have incinerated large parts of the earth," said Andrew Glikson, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University.

The asteroid was bigger than 10km in diameter, while the impact zone itself was larger than 200km — the third largest impact zone in the world.

"The greenhouse gases would stay in the atmosphere for tens of thousands of years," Glikson told Reuters.

The discovery was made after another researcher alerted Glikson to some unusual mineral deposits in the East Warburton Basin in South Australia.

Glikson and colleagues analysed quartz grains drawn from deep beneath the earth's surface in research starting in 2010 and the crater itself was recently identified, he added.

The strike may have been part of an asteroid impact cluster which caused an era of mass extinction, wiping out primitive coral reefs and other species, added Glikson, co-author of a study published in the journal Tectonophysics.

The impact happened before the dinosaurs, he said.

The announcement of the discovery came just before a newly discovered asteroid about half the size of a football field was set to pass some 27,520km from Earth. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 — Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, is writing a memoir about her years at the social network website where she was once director of marketing, publisher HarperCollins said yesterday.

Zuckerberg, 30, signed a two-book deal with HarperCollins that will include her memoir "Dot Complicated," and a children's picture book, scheduled to be released in the fall.

"Technology has changed virtually every part of our lives, resulting in a modern, digital society that feels a lot like the wild, wild West," Zuckerberg said in a statement.

"I am thrilled to be working with HarperCollins to share some of my own crazy experiences on the front lines of social media, and to inspire people of all ages to embrace technology, as well as the new set of social norms that come along with it."

"Dot Complicated" will cover Zuckerberg's six-year role in marketing at Facebook and her decision to leave the social media site to set up her own company, Zuckerberg Media, an entertainment production studio.

HarperCollins said the book will also be released in a digital format that will feature "innovative and engaging interactive components" that will include social media integration and a platform for crowd-sourced stories.

Zuckerberg, who left Facebook in August 2011, served as executive producer for the Bravo reality show "Start-Ups: Silicon Valley" and is the editor of the lifestyle blog "Dot Complicated."

‘Secret History’ author back with ‘Goldfinch’

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 03:33 PM PST

NEW YORK, Feb 15 — It will have been over ten years since the release of Donna Tartt's last novel, "The Little Friend," and 20 since "The Secret History" when her third book arrives on October 22, telling the tale of an art-obsessed orphan in "The Goldfinch."

Theo Decker takes the role of protagonist, and the book's blurb describes him as a young boy who is "alone and determined to avoid being taken in by the city as an orphan" and "entranced by the one thing that reminds him of his mother: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that soon draws Theo into the art underworld."

Decker's miraculous survival in conjunction with the artwork and the book's title suggest links to Pennsylvanian settlers of Central European origin — the goldfinch motif being associated with good luck.

Tartt's first book, "The Secret History," became a major best-seller upon its release in 1992, and "The Little Friend" was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2003.

Little, Brown has tied up a US deal for "The Goldfinch," and international agreements are expected to follow. — AFP/Relaxnews

Siri jelajah pembangkang ke Felda bukan perkara baharu — pengerusi Felda

Posted: 15 Feb 2013 02:17 AM PST

KUALA LUMPUR, 15 Feb — Siri jelajah pembangkang ke Felda seluruh negara bukan perkara baharu apabila pilihan raya umum semakin hampir, kata Pengerusi Felda Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad.

Foot in the mouth?

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 04:25 PM PST

FEB 15 — Sometimes, people get their feet stuck deep in their mouths that it is impossible to pull them back out. Sad for them, but good for me, since I get something to write about.

The first case I would like to discuss is one that I'm sure everyone reading this column would be very familiar with — Sharifah Zohra Jabeen.

Here is a woman who is obviously not very smart trying to make it look and sound like she's smart. Look what happened now. She's gone into hiding out of embarrassment.

And she still hasn't responded to my challenge in a previous article to debate her on a topic of her choice. I guess she's scared that she'll get her other foot stuck in her mouth too.

The second case is something that happened very recently, and that is, the response that Penang BN chief Teng Chang Yeow gave regarding K-pop artist Psy.

Again, most people would be familiar with the recent performance that the Gangnam-style Psy gave in Penang during Chinese New Year.

Yes, it's true that the crowd yelled "Yes!" when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak asked them if they were ready for Psy.

And yes, it is true that the crowd yelled "No!" when he asked them if they were ready for BN (although I can't confirm how many did).

Then there are the rumours that said Psy declined to come out to "low sang" with the prime minister because he was just there to perform.

This would be pretty embarrassing for Najib if it were true. But it remained as a rumour, so many didn't give much thought about it. They just focused on the "No!" story.

But, of course, Teng had to show us his yoga prowess and prove that he is flexible enough to bend his body so his foot could enter his mouth.

Here's what he did — Teng told the media that Psy's life was in danger as there was an attempt on his life. Hence, they had to secure the area and that was the reason he didn't come out.

Excuse me, but… hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

And then there is something former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said yesterday which also caught my attention.

He said that young people are too obsessed with change and that they believe that a change in government would change their lives for the better.

Dr Mahathir went on to say that before, when there was not much development in the country, people would appreciate even the slightest transformation.

But now, the youth in Malaysia, who were born after so much development such as in education and job opportunities have been achieved, don't appreciate this.

He said that the youth were too caught up with the issue of freedom and felt that there was not enough of it in the country regarding many matters.

Wait a minute. It may be true that the youth today did not experience growing up in a country that was not as developed and prosperous as today.

And that is exactly why the youth are not demanding for a change in the issues that existed before their time. They want a change based on what they are experiencing.

If (and this is a big if) matters such as education and employment opportunities are not major issues today, why would the youth ask for a change there?

The issue of the day is mainly freedom (and this is just one of many major issues), and hence, they are demanding a change there.

People want change when things aren't in good shape. They want to change in order to improve. And so, of course, they will harp on the issues that need improvement.

They have seen a government that has been in power their entire lives in Malaysia. Come to think of it, no one has ever seen a different government.

There have been so many things that have needed changing and have been ignored, so many demands and wants that have fallen on deaf and self-serving ears.

So can you blame the youth to think that a change can only happen if there was a change in government? I definitely can't.

And if people like these continue to put their feet in their mouths, it just provides more reason for the youth in the country (or anyone, for that matter) to want a change.

Jalan sukar menuju ‘Tanjung Ringgit’

Posted: 14 Feb 2013 04:08 PM PST

Foto kenangan bersama Pak Sudirman (duduk pertama kiri).

Perjalanan mencabar hampir 3 jam ke Tanjung Ringgit menggunakan motosikal memberikan kekayaan tersendiri bak kata pepatah, "Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer".
