Spain’s wine surplus spills across the planet

They didn't expect just how big. It vaulted Spain to the world's biggest wine producer, forcing its vintners to compete abroad in a tough market to sell off the surplus.

Spain overall produced 50 million hectolitres (6.7 billion bottles) of wine in 2013, a 41% surge from 2012, the Spanish agriculture ministry says.

The ministry's figure for Spanish production exceeds the estimates from the Italian and French wine industries for their own production – 47 million and 42 million hectolitres respectively.

The definitive production figures from the International Organisation of Wine and Vine are published in May. But if confirmed, they would give Spain another industry to look to for exports to build a lasting recovery from the burst property bubble that has hobbled the economy since 2008.

Even Rafael del Rey, director of the Spanish Wine Market Observatory, admitted he found it "most surprising" that Spain leapt ahead to become the top wine producer in the world in 2013.

While weather helped – last summer the country enjoyed the usual sunny weather plus enough rain to really water the vines – the rise in Spanish production is also the result of a drive to increase productivity.

"We have spent many years investing in improving the vineyards," said del Rey.

Twenty five years ago, Spanish vineyards had average yield of 17 hectolitres per hectare – "very low", said Roca. But in recent years the yield has reached about 50 hectolitres per hectare.

Older, less productive vines have been torn up and vineyards made more efficient by replacing handpicking with machines where possible.

"The vineyards' productivity has improved noticeably," del Rey said.

But one problem for winemakers is that Spanish drinkers, who generally prefer a cold beer on their sunny terraces, are not keeping pace with the surge.

"Apart from Norway, Spain is the country with the lowest wine consumption per capita in Europe," said Pau Roca, secretary general of the Spanish Wine Federation.

While just eight years ago, wine made in Spain was mostly drunk there, according to del Rey, now it is mostly exported.

"In the past two years, Spain has been exporting more than double the amount of wine it consumes," he said.

The experience of the Jesus del Perdon cooperative, nestled in the Castile-La Mancha region whose windmills and castles are the setting for Miguel de Cervantes's classic novel "Don Quixote", is typical.

The group of 682 producers in the central Spanish region exported just 20% of its output a decade ago. Now 86% goes abroad.

Exporting is not always an easy option for vineyards, however.

While Castile-La Mancha accounts for over half of the country's wine production, the region's producers must fight to distinguish themselves from better-known names in Spanish wine such as La Rioja and Cava.

"Unfortunately, wine from our region is still not sufficiently appreciated, especially in the foreign market," said the cooperative's viticulturist, Jorge Martinez.

And competition at the lower end of the market is fierce.

Spanish wine generally sells for half the price of French and the vintners of Castile-La Mancha have to keep their prices especially low.

Martinez said the range of 11 bottles the cooperative produces under its own brand sell for between one and six euros (RM4.53 and RM27.18) per bottle.

While growing output and need to export pose challenges for Spanish vineyards, it is an opportunity for the government which is counting on exports to drive economic recovery.

With the economy having contracted more than 5% since the property bubble burst in 2008, Spanish firms have been looking abroad for sales and the country's exports hit a record high last year.

The government expects the economy will grow by 1.0% this year, after having contracted in four out of the past five years. – AFP, March 20, 2014.

Dark chocolate’s healthy effects due to actions of gut bacteria

However, the exact reason why it's so darn beneficial has remained something of a mystery... until now.

Researchers have discovered a specific stomach bacteria that breaks down chocolate and ferments it into anti-inflammatory compounds, making the dark stuff highly useful in terms of heart health.

Findings were presented at the 247th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The meeting is happening at the Dallas Convention Center and area hotels in Dallas, Texas through today.

"We found that there are two kinds of microbes in the gut: the 'good' ones and the 'bad' ones," explained Louisiana State University undergraduate student and study researcher Maria Moore. "The good microbes, such as Bifidobacterium and lactic acid bacteria, feast on chocolate," she said. "When you eat dark chocolate, they grow and ferment it, producing compounds that are anti-inflammatory."

"When these compounds are absorbed by the body, they lessen the inflammation of cardiovascular tissue, reducing the long-term risk of stroke," said lead researcher John Finley, PhD of Louisiana State. Finley also noted that the study is the first to examine the effects of dark chocolate on various types of stomach bacteria.

The professor and his team analysed three cocoa powders using a model digestive tract designed to simulate normal digestion. The researchers then put non-digestible materials through anaerobic fermentation using human fecal bacteria.

Cocoa powder is one of the main ingredients in chocolate, and contains several antioxidant compounds such as catechin and epicatechin, as well as a small amount of dietary fibre.

While both catechin and epicatechin are difficult for the body to digest and absorb, this changes when they reach the colon, as "desirable microbes" take over. "In our study we found that the fibre is fermented and the large polyphenolic polymers are metabolised to smaller molecules, which are more easily absorbed. These smaller polymers exhibit anti-inflammatory activity," Finley said.

Finley also remarked that combining cocoa's fibre content with prebiotics can contribute to overall health and help change antioxidants in the stomach into anti-inflammatory compounds. Prebiotics are food components found in raw garlic, whole wheat flour and other foods humans cannot digest but are heavily favoured by gut bacteria.

"When you ingest prebiotics, the beneficial gut microbial population increases and outcompetes any undesirable microbes in the gut, like those that cause stomach problems," Finley said. He also noted that combining dark chocolate with solid fruits such as pomegranates is even more beneficial to health, and is likely the future of the industry.

Another recent study on dark chocolate and heart health found eating the stuff in moderation can reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, or the thickening and hardening of the arteries, by restoring arterial flexibility and preventing white blood cells from sticking to blood vessel walls. The study was conducted by a research team at the Top Institute Food and Nutrition and the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University in the Netherlands and published in The FASEB Journal. – AFP/Relaxnews, March 20, 2014.

Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben has had his contract extended and will be with them for the next three seasons. – Reuters pic, March 19, 2014. . Bayern Munich's Netherlands winger Arjen Robben has extended his contract with last season's treble winners by two years to 2017, the Bundesliga club said on Wednesday.

Robben, who moved to Munich from Real Madrid in 2009, has enjoyed success at Bayern, winning domestic and European trophies. He scored the late winner in last season's Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

The new deal is a seal of approval with the 30-year-old instantly becoming a key piece in coach Pep Guardiola's attacking game this season after initial fears Robben would have trouble adapting his style to the Spaniard's game plans.

"I am in my fifth year at Bayern and three more to come," Robben said in a club statement. "I look forward to the coming years and a lot more titles with Bayern."

Robben, who has also played for PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea, was a key player in Bayern's treble run under coach Jupp Heynckes and has made a seamless transition to Guardiola's quick passing game.

He has notched 10 goals in the Bundesliga and set up another six, while adding another three in Europe this season.

At times considered difficult to deal with or selfish on the pitch, Robben has carved out an exciting partnership with Frenchman Franck Ribery, helping Bayern to three of the last four Champions League finals and a domestic league and Cup double in 2010.

"We are happy that Arjen extended his deal to 2017," said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "He is an outstanding player and he proved how important he is for Bayern in last season's Champions League final."

"He is an important part of the team and he will remain (so for) several more years." – Reuters, March 19, 2014.

Andy Murray splits with coach Ivan Lendl

Posted: 19 Mar 2014 06:43 AM PDT

March 19, 2014

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray (pic) has split with coach Ivan Lendl after two years, the British world number six said on Wednesday.

A statement on his Twitter page said they had mutually agreed to end a partnership that saw Murray win two grand slam titles and a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

"I'm eternally grateful to Ivan for all his hard work over the past two years, the most successful of my career so far," said Murray, who became Britain's first Wimbledon men's singles champion for 77 years when he beat Novak Djokovic last year.

"As a team, we've learned a lot and it will be of benefit in the future.

"I'll take some time with the team to consider the next steps and how we progress from here."

Since winning Wimbledon last year Murray's form has dipped, not helped by having back surgery towards the end of 2013.

He is yet to win a title this year and was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open by Roger Federer.

Lendl was not at Indian Wells last week where Murray again suffered an early exit, losing to Canada's Milos Raonic.

Eight-times grand slam champion Lendl, 54, said he wanted to concentrate on his own projects.

"Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me," Lendl said.

"He is a first class guy. Having helped him achieve his goal of winning major titles, I feel like it is time for me to concentrate on some of my own projects, including playing more events around the world which I am enjoying.

"I will always be in Andy's corner and wish him nothing but great success as he goes into a new phase of his career."

Until Murray teamed up with Lendl, he had fallen tantalisingly short of winning a grand slam title.

He lost his first four grand slam finals to share a professional era record with Lendl, but finally got over the line at the US Open in 2012 when he prevailed in an epic tussle against Djokovic to become Britain's first male Grand Slam champion since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray lost to Djokovic in the 2013 Australian Open final and, after skipping the French Open through injury, he thrilled the home fans with his run to the Wimbledon title. – Reuters, March 19, 2014.

Belgian monks tested by success of their Trappist beer

March 19, 2014

But change does not come easily.

This is a small, declining community of just 13 monks of the Cistercian Order, which was founded in France at the end of the 11th century on a commitment to "Pray and Work," to focus on the spiritual, not the material world.

Traditionally self-sufficient, Trappist monks made enough beer for their own needs and then sold some to help fund charitable and other works.

From small beginnings, sales have taken off, building on a home market in Belgium to venture into France and the Netherlands, and now to China and the United States.

"The Trappists have a history, a story to tell, which attracts beer lovers," said Thierry Fourneau, in charge of the Rochefort brewery operations.

"The religious origins of our beers is a plus because it is a guarantee of its quality and authenticity," said Francois de Harenne, spokesman for the International Trappist Association which certifies their origin and manufacture.

"Today, demand outpaces supply and it is picking up all over the world even though we have never tried to boost sales," Harenne told AFP.

The ITA closely watches over the trademark which can only be carried by beer brewed exclusively within a Trappist monastery on a non-profit basis, with any surplus used for charity or other social purposes.

Crucially, "the brewery must be of secondary importance within the monastery and it should be witness to the business practices proper to a monastic way of life," the ITA says on its official website.

In Rochefort, the monks distribute about one million euros a year, out of sales of just over seven million euros, "to local families in distress, for missionary work and to help other monasteries in need," said Father Luc, one of the monks.

"Making a profit is by no means an end in itself. We brew beer to ensure our monastery can survive and to help others," he said.

The newest Trappist beer is made at Spencer, in the US state of Massachusetts, where the monks put it on sale to help cover the ever rising cost of medical care for their ageing community.

Declining communities, growing demand

Such problems pressing in from the outside are evident too at the Rochefort monastery, which sits in a quiet valley on the outskirts of the small town about an hour's drive south of Brussels.

From 80 monks in the 1930s, the 13 there now are outnumbered by the 14 lay workers in the small brewery which was modernised in the 1960s.

Worse still, they have had no recent new recruits and the youngest of the monks is in his 40s while others are in their 80s.

That adds to the problems posed by the brewery's success.

"I cannot see how large breweries can be reconciled with small religious communities," Harenne said. "We must respect our founding principles above all."

One hope is perhaps to attract monks from abroad, especially from France where numbers have risen recently.

"Maybe we can get some from there," said Fourneau. "They are not going to let a monastery die."

For the moment, production at the 10 Trappist breweries comes to an annual 460,000 hectolitres, dominated by the best-known brand Chimay with 170,000 hectolitres. Rochefort counts for about 40,000 litres, all dark beer.

Some monasteries such as Orval have decided not to go into new markets at all while the smallest and most sought after brand, Wesvleteren, will sell only to clients who pre-order and come to the brewery to pick up their beer in person.

Wesvleteren, widely reputed to be the best beer in the world, was put on sale at a Belgian chain of supermarkets for only a few weeks in 2011 when the monks needed funds to repair their monastery.

"We are unfortunately obliged to say 'No' for the most part to new customers," said Benoit Minet, commercial director of the Rochefort brewery.

"There is new demand ... all the time. We have a Chinese client, a supermarket, but we have turned down others," Minet said.

"If we decide to expand, we would have to think the whole thing through again, it would be an enormous investment," he said, adding that such a decision would be solely for the monks to make. – AFP, March 19, 2014.

Signings of times – US archives show history by pen

Former US President Richard Nixon's signature is seen on his 1937 FBI application during a press preview at the National Archives in Washington, DC yesterday. – AFP pic, March 19, 2014. Joseph Stalin's signature was bold and forceful, Harry Truman's was unaffected and readily legible, while Winston Churchill's was formal and unflappable.

The autographs of World War II's Big Three leaders – etched on a programme to a string orchestra concert during a break from their conference in Potsdam – are on display at the US National Archives in a new exhibition that aims to look at history through penmanship.

The exhibition, which opens Friday and runs until January 2015, taps into the National Archives' collections to show more than 100 signatures of figures as diverse as pop legend Michael Jackson and the first US president George Washington.

In perhaps the most chilling section, the National Archives has put out the marriage licence of Adolf Hitler signed on April 29, 1945 as the German dictator and Eva Braun eloped one day before they committed suicide.

The licence, seized by US troops, testifies that Hitler and his longtime girlfriend were "of pure Aryan descent" and asks Braun, "Are you willing to take Our Fuehrer Adolf Hitler as your husband?"

Hitler signs with a scrunched scribble and Braun begins to write "Eva B-" before crossing out the "B" of her maiden name and writing Eva Hitler. The dictator's confidants Joseph Goebbels and Martin Bormann signed as witnesses.

"Signatures tell us a lot about their owners and the circumstances under which they were made," said David Ferriero, archivist of the United States.

The exhibition's signatures show Civil War president Abraham Lincoln to be "decisive", anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman as "determined" and Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn as "fearless", he said.

The exhibition highlights the unexpected turns and what-ifs of history. A 1989 card signed by Saddam Hussein thanks new US president George H.W. Bush for his "kind greetings"; two years later, the United States would attack Iraq after Saddam's invasion of Kuwait.

Another display shows the young Richard Nixon's application to be an FBI agent. The fresh law school graduate never heard back – apparently, he was told years later, due to budget cuts in Washington – and he returned to California, soon embarking on a political career that would lead him to the White House.

Jennifer Johnson, the exhibition's curator, said that the one historical figure she felt obliged to include was the US revolutionary John Hancock, whose signature is on display in a document as governor of Massachusetts.

Hancock's conspicuously large signature on the 1776 Declaration of Independence from Britain – on permanent display elsewhere at the National Archives in central Washington – was so famous that his name has become synonymous with an autograph in American English.

Shifting to the contemporary era, the exhibition demonstrates an autopen. Barack Obama has become the first president to use an autopen, authorising his signature remotely on urgent legislation when he is away from Washington, triggering protests by lawmakers from the rival Republican Party.

Beyond politics, signatures are increasingly uncommon in the Internet era. US teachers generally emphasise penmanship less than educators in Asian and European nations.

Johnson said she expected children at the exhibition to have trouble reading cursive writing.

"We're certainly ticking that way in how we sign things. When I think about it, I don't put pen to paper that often when making a transaction," she said. "As a historian, I'm terribly sad about it... but I think it's inevitable." – AFP, March 19, 2014.

George R.R. Martin names favourite hidden gem novels

'The Iron King' by Maurice Druon, first in 'The Accursed Kings' series. – AFP/Relaxnews pic, March 19, 2014. The author of "A Song of Fire and Ice", the basis for TV series "Game of Thrones," has named Maurice Druon and Jack Vance as his hidden gems of fantasy fiction.

Maurice Druon's historical series "Accursed Kings" covers a tumultuous 30-year period of French power struggles in the late Middle Ages.

According to Martin, the seven-book collection contains "all the good stuff that's in my books, minus the fantasy", he said in conversation with Entertainment Weekly ahead of a "Game of Thrones" fourth season.

Originally published in French between 1955 and 1977, George R.R. Martin has now provided an introduction for HarperCollins' new English reprint of "The Accursed Kings".

Its third part, "The Poisoned Crown", is due in North America on April 1, while UK readers received that tome in January and are on to part 4, "The Royal Succession", as soon as April 24.

Martin's second pick for wider recognition was from the hand of Jack Vance, who passed away last year at the age of 96.

While the author was especially well praised for early works "The Dragon Masters", "The Last Castle," as well the mid-1980s French-English fantasy "Lyonesse," Martin selected Vance's "Dying Earth" series for particular recommendation.

"Vance was a name in SF and fantasy series, but remains relatively unknown outside the genre," he told EW. "But his 'Dying Earth' stories are classics of the genre, and by rights should be as well-known and widely read as Tolkien and Howard."

And those are no empty words – Martin co-edited the 2009 collection "Songs of the Dying Earth" in tribute to Vance's original four book series; its 22 contributing authors included Mike Resnick, Glen Cook, Neil Gaiman, Tanith Lee and Elizabeth Moon. – AFP/Relaxnews, March 19, 2014.

Muzik, dadah dan imej

Posted: 18 Mar 2014 04:54 PM PDT

March 19, 2014

Saya bercerita melalui pengalaman.

Penyanyi rap kita pula kebanyakannya anak orang berada, belanja hidup makan minum segalanya ditanggung ibu bapa.

Tentera Thailand hilang isyarat pesawat berkenaan kerana keupayaan had radar tentera, katanya.

– 19 Mac, 2014.
