Sagar’s in Penang!

PENANG, July 20 — Last Friday saw the launch of one of Penang's newest restaurants, Sagar. This north Indian restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the Bayview Beach Resort in Batu Ferringhi, which is a pretty apt location as sagar is the Sanskrit word for ocean.

"Is it because you serve mainly seafood?" I asked proprietor Hermet Singh. "No," he replied, "it is because oceans have no limit and therefore allow business ventures to grow."

Well, considering that this outlet is the 8th of the KL chain started by the enterprising man and his brother Gurdarshan you can gather that this interpretation of the word sagar is pretty accurate. Although most of the restaurants are located south, there is a Sagar in Pantai Tengah, Langkawi.

Knowing that the launch party was going to be quite noisy and that there wouldn't be a chance for Hermet to sit down and talk to me, I was lucky to be given the opportunity to sample some of the food a couple of days prior.

The menu is extensive, and includes a range of starters, tandooris, curries, naans and vegetarian dishes all cooked by their team of chefs from India, headed by Chef Lakhan from Mhadaya Pradesh near Mumbai.

We started with a tasty Chicken Mallai Tikka, pieces of chicken marinated with just the right amount of fragrant coriander and cumin mixed together with sour yoghurt. This was accompanied by a Mixed Vegetable Pakora, chopped vegetables and onions mixed into a batter then deep-fried into slightly salty, fragrant crispy balls which go well with a bee … or two, as the case might be!

Mains included a Dhal Curry and a Mutton Masala, surprisingly spicy because northern Indian cuisine is not usually very (chilli) hot, but quite delicious nonetheless , to go with their special Chicken Briyani which is baked with a "lid" of naan bread to keep the flavours in. As for desserts, their cooling home-made Mango Kulfi (Indian ice cream) went down a treat, as did the Pistachio.

Although it is by no means the first of its kind in this part of the island, Sagar will be somewhere special to take people for a night out if you want elegant surroundings and something savoury and spicy that's not Chinese. I also particularly like the fact that there are two private rooms which can be made into one, if you want to hold a function.

LONDON, July 20 – Arsenal's Brazilian midfielder Denilson has re-joined his former club Sao Paulo on a season-long loan, the Premier League side said today.

Manager Arsene Wenger said at the weekend that the 23-year-old would be returning to Brazil for the 2011-12 season, and the club confirmed his destination on their website (http://www.arsenal.com).

Denilson (picture), who made his first-team debut for Arsenal in October 2006 in a League Cup match against West Bromwich Albion, made 153 appearances for the London side and scored 10 goals.

After establishing himself as a regular in the 2008-09 season, he struggled for a regular start last season.

Rebecca Black’s ‘Moment’ gets 5 million views in 2 days

LOS ANGELES, July 20 — Accidental teenage singing sensation Rebecca Black is back in the spotlight with the calculated release of "My Moment" on YouTube. The video sparked a Twitter trending topic and, with over five million views in two days, has shot straight to the top of YouTube's charts.

The 14-year-old gained worldwide recognition after her song "Friday," recorded by vanity producers Ark Music, was leaked on YouTube and subsequently dubbed "the worst song ever" by viewers.

The song's notoriety caused it to go viral, and by the time it was removed from YouTube on June 16 it had attracted over 160 million views and spawned countless parodies. "Friday" was re-uploaded to YouTube on July 8.

However, despite the accidental nature of her fame, Rebecca Black's second singing effort is a more calculated affair.

"My Moment," the single released on July 18, sparked a worldwide Twitter trending topic and, with more than five million views, has shot to the top of YouTube's "most watched today" and "most watched this week" charts.  To put this in context, the second most popular video on YouTube's "most watched today" chart, Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper," was uploaded a week ago and has three million fewer views.

While the song was never going to win widespread critical acclaim, YouTube viewers seem to be reacting particularly badly to Rebecca's efforts, with more than 200,000 viewers taking the time to 'dislike' the video — compared to 130,000 who chose to 'like' it.

Despite the feedback, with a YouTube channel, a Wikipedia page, a website, an appearance in Katy Perry's video "Last Friday Night" and the release of "My Moment" for US$1.29 (RM3.86) on iTunes, it seems as if Rebecca Black is heading toward a professional singing career. — AFP/Relaxnews

Tributes flow for Aboriginal actor Ngoombujarra

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 08:36 AM PDT

SYDNEY, July 20 — Tributes have flowed for Aboriginal actor David Ngoombujarra who died on the weekend, with Hollywood star Hugh Jackman describing him as "an extraordinary man."

Ngoombujarra, 44, had starred in several iconic Australian films including "Rabbit-Proof Fence" and the Baz Luhrmann directed 2008 feature "Australia" with Nicole Kidman.

He was found in a park in Fremantle, Western Australia, on Sunday and later pronounced dead in hospital. Police are awaiting a toxicology report to pinpoint the cause of death but are not treating it as suspicious.

Jackman, who co-starred with Ngoombujarra (picture) in "Australia", tweeted of "an extraordinary man, actor and friend."

"His laugh, warmth and humanity will live on with all who knew him," he said.

Luhrmann told The Australian newspaper that Ngoombujarra had an "extraordinary spirit, life force and creativity" which lifted spirits during the many months of shooting "Australia".

Indigenous actor and presenter Ernie Dingo, who co-starred with Ngoombujarra in an ABC television series, described his friend as a man who was "always in touch with his culture, wherever he was".

"Very sadly, he was lost between two cultures," he said. — AFP/Relaxnews

Dog bites shark and goes viral

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 06:31 AM PDT

A video grab from footage shot June 1, 2011 shows a dog swimming with sharks before diving underwater, appearing to bite one of them, in the shallow waters in the west Australian town of Broome. Cameraman Russell Hood-Penn captured the moment on film and shouted "the dog's biting the shark" as the dog dived under the water towards the shark. – Reuters pic

SYDNEY, July 20 – It's got a big yellow dog, sharks, a dead dugong, attracted millions of viewers on YouTube and you couldn't make it up.

Video footage of a dog attacking a shark under water on the Australian coast has "gone viral", becoming a top Internet hit.

The footage shows two dogs swimming in the ocean near the West Australian town of Broome, about 1,650km northeast of Perth.

The dogs appear to be herding several sharks towards shore, when one suddenly ducks under the water and attacks a shark.

"The dog is biting the shark," said Russell Hood-Penn in the voice-over as he video-taped the incident. "That is unbelievable. I've seen it all now."

Hood-Penn placed the footage on video-sharing website YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HyIZh5BQZY), where it has been viewed more than 27 million times.

When the camera pans out, a dead dugong (a large marine mammal similar to a manatee) can be seen beached on the shore and Hood-Penn speculates that is the reason the sharks are circling so close to shore.

At the end of the video the dog emerges from the ocean and shakes the water from its fur. There was no word on the fate of the shark. – Reuters

Tracking predators to avoid becoming prey

BORNEO, July 20 — With human encroachment forcing closer proximity between villagers and the wildlife here, scientists are now strapping tracking devices on giant crocodiles to prevent bloody encounters with the deadly predators, The Times reported today.

According to the British daily, at least 23 people have been eaten by crocodiles over the past decade, owing to massive jungle clearing that have reduced the availability of the creature's traditional prey.

"It is a very dangerous environment — the attack rate on humans is extremely high. The use of land for plantations here has considerably decreased the amounts of prey available for crocodiles.

"This makes for a far more dangerous environment, and attack rates on humans near plantations are extremely high compared to those in forested areas," project leader Dr Benoit Goossens was quoted as saying.

The Times said the project to track the crocodiles is being undertaken by a team of researchers from a research and training centre in Sabah, and jointly managed by Cardiff University and the Sabah Wildlife Department.

"The project on Borneo's Kinabatangan River will benefit both the human population and the giant predators," The Times said.

Already, researchers have begun trapping the giant reptiles, and one 12ft-long saltwater crocodile called "Girang" has already been fitted with the device — called the "snap nav" — which costs nearly RM6,800.

"The reptiles are released back to the wild soon afterwards, where their movements can be tracked using a laptop computer — allowing people in the area to give them a wide berth," wrote the Times.

"We are trying to understand the movements of these large predators by tagging large males, which are potentially man-eaters. We are hoping to reduce fatal attacks by using our results to give safety guidelines for plantation workers and local villagers.

"Our results will also contribute to the protection of the species and benefit the local ecosystem, as well as tourism," Dr Goosens was quoted as saying.

He added that the team hopes to tag at least ten crocodiles in the area over the next year.

Kes Sarbaini: Peguam mahu buat laporan polis, dakwa tulisan Raja Petra ada asas

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 03:34 AM PDT

Bersih: PKR dakwa polis cuba bunuh Anwar

Posted: 20 Jul 2011 02:23 AM PDT

A spot of failure

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:05 PM PDT

JULY 20 — Yes, as we all watched in shock and horror, the Brazilians failed four times from just 12 yards!

It was truly incredible to watch the drama unfold as the land that produces the most exciting players in the world got their noses put out of joint on penalties.

No, this is no Brazil bash but the unthinkable can and will happen in sport.

However, there is another story reminiscent of the "floating" penalty spot, as was evident in La Plata in Argentina.

The shootout brought back that memory of another competition and a sensible referee.

It was July 31, 2004 in Chongqing, China and the tie was a quarterfinal match between Japan and Jordan at the AFC Asian Cup 2004.

With the score at 1-1 after 120 minutes, the game went to penalties and the Japanese team started the shootout.

Up stepped Shunsuke Nakamura, his standing foot slipped and the ball ended up in Row Z. Ditto Elano.

The penalty spot was "loose" after some torrential rain during the game but Jordan made no mistake to go one up.

Next was Alex, and he suffered the same fate.

However, this time the referee took note and after consulting with the other match officials, he decided to have the shootout at the opposite goalmouth.

The Jordanians eventually lost 4-3, after sudden death, missing the last four of seven penalties.

Sitting in the commentary box, yours truly was pleased with the brave decision made by a very sensible referee in the interest of the game.

That the referee, Subkhidin Mohd Salleh, was a fellow Malaysian was a coincidence but at that time he had to face criticism from many quarters. But such criticism was certainly not justified in my opinion.

As I was watching the Brazil versus Paraguay shootout, the stature of Subkhidin Mohd Salleh grew even bigger after seven years.

And there was no reason as to why Sergio Pezzotta could not have taken the same decision to change ends for the penalties.

It is solely the referee's discretion as to which goalmouth for the shootout but the Argentinian referee let the game down.

Since this has happened to the next host of the World Cup, maybe FIFA will now make it a rule for a referee and his assistants to first examine both penalty spots to determine which end is better suited to ensure a spectacle and not a joke.

We now have surprise package Peru up against new favourites Uruguay.

I think it would be difficult to not see the World Cup 2010 semifinalists making the final match and taking home the Copa America.

The other finalist should be Paraguay, although Venezuela will make it a battle with their compact hard running style.

Not on your side, but ours

Posted: 19 Jul 2011 05:01 PM PDT

JULY  20 — Politicians are sneaky, tricksy beasts. I like joking that entering the profession means having your spine surgically removed, though am also inclined to believe my colleagues' theory that lobotomies are also involved.

How else can you explain the sudden about turns, and flip flopping more than a desperate fish out of water?

"Did I say that yesterday when today I am saying the opposite? No, I was misquoted!" the politicians cry after being caught out in a sudden reversal of opinion. Truly, this sudden political amnesia is disturbing.

So it is really no surprise that most average Malaysians dislike "being political" as they like being seen as still having a backbone and, ideally, brains.

That is why a lot of Malaysians are happy to declare they are neither for one side nor the other, even in private conversation. I blame the government, really, for the average Malaysian being too cowed to have or express an opinion.

My countrymen (and women and small children), let me tell you this: it is fine to be political. It is absolutely all right to care about politics, about governance, about civil rights, liberty and the like.

We should all be political, but that does not mean we need to be partisan.

It is rather annoying that in this country, if you care about the welfare of the Malays, you are seen as pro-Umno, if you care about Indian welfare, you are seen as being a follower of that "dangerous" movement Hindraf.

In that light, then should we call anyone caught on video doing naughty, naughty things pro-MCA? Or pro-PKR? The mind boggles.

There is a different group I see emerging from the so-called minority. People who previously shunned political discussion, who happily admitted to apathy, who are now loudly making their opinions known. They still refuse to show allegiance to any political party and honestly, why should they? A vote is a citizen's alone and is not the business of anyone else.

If this group had a voice, I imagine this is how it would describe itself:

1. We care about our country.

2. We don't care about your parties. Umno, PKR, PAS, MIC, Gerakan... your party squabbles and internal goings-on do not concern us. We care that you have a plan and know how to execute it. Show us why we should vote for you.

3. We want to speak and be heard, that is all.

4. We actually do think for ourselves and we're a little tired of sitting back and letting the government do the thinking when it's clear it needs a lot of help.

I see these people everywhere. My friends. My relatives. People who have been content to not bother with current affairs are suddenly asking questions and asking that most important one: "What can I do?"

The simplistic answer used to be: "Vote." But that is not enough anymore. Malaysians are seeing the need to do more than wait every four years to do something about the current state of affairs.

After so many years of Malaysians being told what they couldn't do, perhaps it is time for them to figure out what they can. Come up with solutions on their own, work on ideas, start on doing things as a collective of communities instead of passive citizens waiting for a nanny government.

The government keeps harping on about creating more opportunities and driving innovation. You cannot have the latter in an environment of oppression. Stifling public freedoms also stifles creativity and progress — that is the reality the government has to learn and face.

Malaysians are seeing more than ever that putting faith in politicians is often misplaced and that it is pointless being on a politician's side. Citizens need to be in their own corner, be their own champions instead of always doing a Tina Turner, holding out for a hero.

In the end, we are all our own champions and the hero we need is the one looking right back at us in the mirror.
