AFC Celebrity Chef won, not by best, but the brightest

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 09:13 PM PST

Always smiling... Dino's sunny personality came through and made him the winner of the contest.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 — Eight weeks, five countries, many broken plates, one winner: Dino Ferrari! The E&O Search for AFC's Next Celebrity Chef finally came to an end after eight episodes last night and the winner is the cheery private chef from the Philippines who had not impressed in previous episodes with his food... but his smiley good attitude.

In fact, in one earlier episode, he was singled out — rather unfairly I thought — by another contestant for turning out average food. Restaurateur Christian from Hong Kong said something to the effect that he would like to see Dino cook something better than what he himself would do on an average weekend at home.

A rather sour grapes comment as Dino had been judged one of the winners in that particular week's challenge!

Early in the season, it was hard to relate to any of the 12 contestants and most viewers zoned in on the rather temperamental behaviour of judge Chef Bruce Lim instead. Unlike his fellow judge, Michael Saxon of the E&O, Bruce who has his own AFC shows like "Tablescapes" and "The Boss" was quite the Gordon Ramsay throughout the contest.

Viewers (and I am sure contestants) were quite taken aback when he threw a plate of one contestant's food on the floor in Episode 1. And mind you that was not the first and only time he did that.

As we got to the second half of the season, though, it became clearer why he chose to behave that way (apparently Chef Bruce is nothing like the short-tempered angry bear we see on the show!). He wanted to push the contestants to see how they would react under pressure... after all, one of the prices for winning the competition is a year-long contract with the E&O Group (yes, the people behind those lovely hotels we saw in the show and, of course, the Delicious group of restaurants among many others).

udge Michael Saxon observing Dino as he plates up his food in the final challenge.

The two-hour season finale last night showed the last four contestants — Stanley, Shinith, Diane and Dino — tested on not just creativity, but also personality. The last three episodes saw more and more of the emphasis on the last.

Although Chef Stanley from Hong Kong was and is one of my favourite contestants, I knew from Episode 6 onwards he was on thin ice. That episode — one of the best in the season — saw the contestants presenting their own TV show.

This was obviously a test to see if they were good celebrity chef material. And that was the episode when I knew Stanley was not going to make it... unless he pulled something remarkable out of the bag. And it was also that episode that showed us — the viewers — that it was Dino who was most comfortable in front of the cameras.

So the finale wasn't that surprising, but was still fun to watch for the kind of challenges the final four had to face: mentoring kids, cooking for private clients, and being in charge of a gala dinner. Great fun.

Still, I could not but feel a little crushed when Chef Stanley was eliminated. The judges publicly acknowledged he was the best chef in the contest and judge Michael Saxon said he would "pay good money to eat at his restaurant." Even better, the usually critical Chef Bruce took off his chef's jacket and asked Stanley to sign it.

At the end of it all, I felt there was more than one winner in the show. While all attention (and rightly so) is on Dino, the E&O properties featured throughout the show were also winners. The storied E&O Hotel in Penang looked stunning — like the grand dame she is — and Lone Pine Hotel... oh my, be still my beating heart.

The next question, of course, is whether there will be a second season. It would be a shame if this were a one-off series. With a little tweaking, I think this show can only get better in Season 2.

English authorities unite in fight against racism

LONDON, Dec 22 ― England's football and legal authorities appeared to be united in their fight against racism yesterday after the English FA banned Liverpool's Luis Suarez for racial abuse and England captain John Terry was told he faced prosecution for the same offence.

Liverpool's Uruguayan striker Suarez, 24, was handed an eight-match ban and fined £40,000 (RM198,000) on Tuesday after an independent FA commission found him guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League game at Anfield on October15.

Less than 24 hours after the FA's announcement of that ground-breaking decision, the Crown Prosecution Service said it had "sufficient evidence" to prosecute Terry, the 31-year-old captain of England and Chelsea, for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand of Queens Park Rangers during another Premier League match on October 23.

Terry has vehemently denied the allegation, but the prosecution is going ahead after video footage of what he appeared to say was posted on the Internet and provoked a complaint to the police from a member of the public.

The maximum penalty Terry faces is a fine of £2,500, loose change to a man earning a reported £150,000 a week, but the damage to his reputation would be considerable.

Suarez denial

Chelsea have issued a statement strongly defending their player with manager Andre Villas-Boas also backing him.

The statement on their website (http://www.chelseafc.com) read: "John has made it clear he denies the charge and is determined to do all he can to prove his innocence.

"Chelsea FC has always been fully supportive of John in this matter and there is no question that we will continue to be so.

"The club finds all forms of discrimination abhorrent and we are proud of the work we undertake campaigning on this important issue."

Liverpool meanwhile issued a forceful 500-word statement on Tuesday defending Suarez and calling into question Evra's claim that Suarez racially abused him "at least 10 times."

Liverpool have 14 days in which to lodge an appeal against the decision, and until they do, Suarez is free to play.

The Uruguayan government, his international team mates and coaching staff have all come out in support of Suarez.

"This leaves us with a disagreeable feeling," Uruguay's National Sports Director Ernesto Irureta told the Montevideo newspaper Ultimas Noticias (http://www.ultimasnoticias.com.uy).

"A sanction like this is absurd, out of place and absolutely exaggerated. What's more, there's the story that the other sportsman (Evra) might have called Luis a 'sudaca'," he added, referring to an insulting Spanish term for South Americans.

"What's happening in Europe is a product of their problems and not a product of what happens among players and one of them concerns racism... We have a country with differences but a long way from those circumstances that occur in the Old Continent."

National team coach Oscar Tabarez's assistant Celso Otero said: "It's a shame he should have been sanctioned this way for something that should have remained on the pitch."

Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) president Sebastian Bauza said the AUF was in touch with the FA and Liverpool through the Uruguayan embassy in England to give Suarez whatever backing he needed in his appeal against the sanction.

Players including Uruguay captain Diego Lugano said people in Uruguay, where a large percentage of the population is black or of mixed race, were not racist and used terms such as 'negro' in an affectionate manner or as nicknames.

"I can't believe it. They're making a big mistake. It's obvious that in England there's a racism problem they're trying to eradicate, and that's good, but this sentence has no solid arguments," Lugano said.

Not tolerated

However, Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) in England, said that Suarez's punishment gave a "very strong message to the world" that racism would not be tolerated in the English game.

He added: "This was an independent commission experienced in law and football and they must have had compelling evidence and it sends out a very strong message to the rest of the world."

Suarez argued that due to cultural differences he did not realise that the language he used was seen as racist in Europe.

Taylor replied though, "I understand the point about cultural differences, but if you come to this country all players have to abide by not just the laws of the game, but the laws of the land as well.

"Referring to someone's skin colour has got to be offensive - it's self-evident.

"No one can say the FA have ducked this issue and, bearing in mind the outcry in this country over (FIFA president) Sepp Blatter's remarks (on racism), it sends out an important message."

Blatter provoked a media outcry when he suggested, during a television interview, that racism on the pitch should be settled by a handshake. He later apologised for his comments. ― Reuters

Chelsea’s Terry to be prosecuted over race abuse claim

LONDON, Dec 21 — Chelsea captain John Terry will be prosecuted over alleged racial abuse made during a Premier League match in October, British authorities said today.

"I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case," Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London said in a statement.

"Mr Terry will appear before West London Magistrates' Court on 1 February 2012."

Police had been investigating allegations that Terry racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match.

Terry has denied making a racist comment to Ferdinand, younger brother of the England captain's long-time international teammate Rio.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was yesterday banned for eight matches and fined £40,000 (RM198,130) by the FA for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a game earlier this season. — Reuters

China tells off ‘Batman’ star for ‘creating news’

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 06:04 AM PST

BEIJING, Dec 21 — China slammed Hollywood actor and "Batman" star Christian Bale today for "creating news" after he was roughed up by security guards as he tried to visit a blind legal activist whose detention has sparked a domestic and international outcry.

Christian Bale: In Zhang Yimou tear-jerker. — Reuters pic

Bale and a camera crew from CNN were last week jostled by men in plainclothes in Dongshigu village in eastern Shandong province, where activist Chen Guangcheng has been under house arrest for 15 months.

Bale was in China for the premiere of his latest film, "The Flowers of War" by Chinese director Zhang Yimou, a lavish and at times graphic tear-jerker about the 1937 Nanjing Massacre, which is China's Oscar entry for best foreign language film.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin, asked if China had been embarrassed by Bale's actions given the country's hopes for the film to win an Academy award, said it was Bale who should be embarrassed.

"If anyone should be embarrassed it's the relevant actor, not the Chinese side," Liu told a daily news briefing, in the country's first reaction to Bale's actions.

"What I understand is that the actor was invited by the director Zhang Yimou to attend the movie premiere. He was not invited to any village in Shandong to create news or make a film," he added.

"If he wants to create news, I don't think that would be welcomed by China."

He did not answer a question about whether Bale's actions might affect the chances of any of his upcoming movies being screened in China.

"The Flowers of War" has played to ecstatic audiences in China, and has raked in some 200 million yuan (RM99.6 million) at the box office since being released last week.

It gets a limited release in the United States this week, where it has so far garnered unenthusiastic reviews.

The fate of Chen, a self-schooled advocate, has become a test of wills, pitting the Communist Party's crackdown on dissent against activists championing his cause and that of artist Ai Weiwei.

Chen angered Shandong officials in 2005 by exposing a programme of forced abortions as part of China's one-child policy. He was formally released in September 2010 after four years in jail on a charge of "blocking traffic".

China does not take kindly to foreign criticism of its rights record. In 2008, Icelandic singer Bjork shouted "Tibet! Tibet!" at a Shanghai concert after performing her song "Declare Independence", angering the government and local fans alike.

As a young boy, Bale starred in "Empire of the Sun", a film set in World War Two about a British family in Shanghai.  — Reuters

Welles’s ‘Citizen Kane’ Oscar sells for RM2.7m

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 04:14 AM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 21 — Orson Welles's Oscar for writing "Citizen Kane" — regarded as one of the best films ever made — sold for US$861,542 (RM2.7 million) yesterday as a hot market for Hollywood memorabilia helped erase memories of an unsuccessful auction four years ago.

The best screenplay statuette awarded in 1942 — the only Oscar given to "Citizen Kane" — failed to meet its undisclosed reserve price when it was last up for auction at Sotheby's New York in 2007. At that time it was expected to sell for around US$1 million.

Although tarnished by age, the Oscar, sold by Los Angeles auction house Nate D. Saunders on behalf of its anonymous seller, carried a reserve price of between US$600,000 and US$1 million. Bids came in from around the world in what the auction house termed an "exciting" sale.

"This is a testament to the popularity of Orson Welles and his magnum opus Citizen Kane," said Nate D. Saunders, owner of the auction house, in a statement.

The Oscar has a story worthy of a Hollywood movie in its own right. Welles had lost it, but it resurfaced after his 1985 death when it was put up for auction in 1994 by a cinematographer, who claimed Welles had given it to him as a form of payment.

Welles's daughter Beatrice sued and won back ownership of the statue, but she was sued in turn by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the awards, when she tried to auction it in 2003.

After a legal battle, Beatrice Welles was given the right to dispose of the Oscar. She sold it to a California non-profit organisation called the Dax Foundation, which tried unsuccessfully to auction it in 2007.

In a bid to stop public sales, the Academy in 1950 introduced an agreement that banned winners from selling their Oscars to anyone but the Academy for the nominal sum of US$1.

But several pre-1950s Oscars have gone under the hammer in recent years, including the best picture Oscar for the 1939 film "Gone with the Wind", which was sold for a record US$1.54 million in 1999 to Michael Jackson.

"Citizen Kane", a 1942 drama about the ruthless pursuit of power, which Welles also directed and starred in, regularly tops US and British lists of the greatest film of all time.

In a sign of how heated the memorabilia market has become, auctions of Elizabeth Taylor's collection of jewels, gown, art and memorabilia broke records last week on their way to totalling more than US$150 million worth of live and online sales, Christie's said on Monday. — Reuters

Eat less to keep the mind young

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 06:10 AM PST

WASHINGTON, Dec 21 – Eating less may keep the mind young, according to Italian scientists who reported recently they have discovered the molecular process by which a strict diet may save the brain from the ravages of age.

The research, published in the US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is based on a study of mice that were fed a diet of about 70 per cent of the food they normally consumed.

Scientists found the calorie-restricted diet triggered a protein molecule, CREB1, that activates a host of genes linked to longevity and good brain function.

"Our hope is to find a way to activate CREB1, for example through new drugs, so to keep the brain young without the need of a strict diet," said lead author Giovambattista Pani, researcher at the Institute of General Pathology, Faculty of Medicine at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome.

Researchers have previously discovered that mice on diets showed better cognitive abilities and memory, less aggression, and tended to avoid or delay Alzheimer's disease. But they have not known exactly why.

"CREB1 is known to regulate important brain functions as memory, learning and anxiety control, and its activity is reduced or physiologically compromised by aging," said the study.

Mice that were genetically altered to lack CREB1 showed none of the same memory benefits if they were on a low-calorie diet as mice that had the molecule, and showed the same brain disabilities as mice that were overfed.

"Thus, our findings identify for the first time an important mediator of the effects of diet on the brain," Pani said.

"This discovery has important implications to develop future therapies to keep our brain young and prevent brain degeneration and the aging process."

According to Marc Gordon, chief of neurology at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, the findings could shed new light on why some people who are obese in middle age encounter cognitive problems later in life.

"Mid-life obesity has been associated with late-life dementia. However, the physiological basis for this association remains unclear," said Gordon, who was not part of the study.

"These investigators have studied the effects of limiting caloric intake in mice, and have identified a biochemical pathway that may mediate at least some of the brain's responses to dietary restriction." – AFP

NEW YORK, Dec 21 ― The daughter of a Russian billionaire has broken New York real estate records by paying $88 million (RM279.84 million) for a huge Manhattan apartment, Forbes magazine reported.

Yekaterina Rybolovleva, daughter of former fertiliser magnate Dmitry Rybolovlev, paid full asking price for the multiroom spread at 15 Central Park West, the magazine reported Monday, saying this was a record for an individual transaction in a city renowned for pricey property.

The record was previously owned by Sanford Weill, a former chairman of Citigroup.

Forbes quoted a representative for Rybolovleva, 22, saying she had "signed a contract to purchase an apartment at 15 Central Park West... Ms. Rybolovleva is currently studying at a US university. She plans to stay in the apartment when visiting New York."

She is a resident of Monaco and has lived in the principality and in Switzerland for the last 15 years, the statement said.

Rybolovlev is one of the small group of Russians who became fabulously wealthy during the post-Soviet privatisation of the economy and are known as oligarchs. He is the former owner of fertiliser business Uralkali. ― AFP―Relaxnews

Crisis of faith

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 04:06 PM PST

DEC 21 — One wonders what the esteemed Selangor executive councillor in charge of Islamic Affairs wakes up to in the morning? It must be hard going to sleep at night, what with the bogeymen lurking under the bed and the branches of that dark and creepy tree scratching the window. And what about that guy in the closet with the digital Bible? The one who keeps talking about compassion, charity, helping others, and how all religions are equal to each other. And all this talk about love for his fellow men. Why can't he just buzz off?

Yeah, it's tough being a champion of the faith. There are just so many things to be afraid of. The teachers in a school, the NGO working with people living with HIV, the food and drinking water being served at an interfaith event, the soup kitchen on the corner of Jalan Chow Kit, the toothpaste, the butter. Brrr…It's a tough life.

The self-proclaimed guardians of the faith appear to be unrestrained in their zealousness to be seen to protect the faithful from all threats, real, perceived or imagined. What has become more strident of late has been the increasingly hysterical call to protect their faith from another faith.

Let's face it. Within a small segment of the Malay community in Malaysia, there is an ongoing hysterical belief, nay conviction, that there is a systematic campaign by Christians to convert Muslims and conquer the country. The Harapan Komuniti incident at the DUMC last August not only brought this to light but demonstrated in sharp relief how the organs of the state, particularly those which are depended on to protect the rakyat regardless of whatever religion, have also begun to succumb to those who subscribe to this mindset. Hasan Ali is a manifestation of that.

I don't know about the existence of the abovementioned campaign but I do know about the one going around the country trying to convince the Malay community to rise up against the phantom menace. It seems in the latter movement, the need for evidence, substance, reason and rationality is optional. You can leave those at home. All you need is a sprinkling of bigotry and racism, a pinch of insinuation mixed with innuendo, and a healthy dosage of absurdity and fear.

It has now become acceptable to point to an opposition governed state and say that there is a Christianisation agenda by virtue of there being several non-Muslims serving as senior members of the administration. We heard that from a delegate on the very first day of a political party's recent general assembly. A few years ago, nobody would have even dared to insinuate that in such a gathering much less say so in public with such rancour.

The great religions of the world, including Islam, emphasise on inclusivity not exclusivity, yet in Malaysia, it seems that we go out of our way to ensure that we alienate not only those of different faiths but also those of own congregation as well, especially those not of similar mind.

I believe that today there is a crisis of faith occurring amongst Muslims in Malaysia, particularly amongst the youth. Many have begun to be disillusioned as a result of increasingly draconian measures aimed to curb perceived excesses yet choosing to remain quiet on practices such as female circumcision, child marriage, corruption and the continued neglect of those in need and want.

Discourse on alternative views of religion is neither tolerated nor encouraged. We see religious departments, fatwa councils, muftis and various so-called champions of the faith believing themselves to be the only owners and purveyors of the truth. We see an institution that has become rigid in practice, straightjacketed in its thinking and emphasising form over substance. We see this disgraceful behaviour of accusing others of proselytisation and conversion. Taken together, we see injustices done to the progressiveness, fair, equitable and inclusive beliefs of Islam. Many of us do not see a future in Malaysia because of this.

So when is it all going to stop?

At what point do we wake up and realise that what is being done by these people on the pretext of safeguarding the morality and faith of Muslims are actually excuses for groups of insecure individuals to exert control and instil irrational fear, bigotry and racial hatred among the masses? That we are on the verge of succumbing to religious fascism?

In the aftermath of the Harapan Komuniti incident, there was an opportunity to send a clear message that this sort of behaviour would not be tolerated. Instead, I believe that the ball was dropped and the authority in question was ill advised. As a result, those responsible have now taken it as a green light to embark on this expanding tirade against another religion.

Growing up in a multiethnic country with its diversity of religions and cultures, we have been taught to be proud of our ability to work and live together. Yet today, many of us have been exhorted to fear our non-Muslim sisters and brothers and to treat them in a manner which I believe is disgraceful and does dishonour to the founders of our country and Islam.

As youth, we have learned the lessons from the past, and I can conclude one thing: we have no use for the bigoted and racist mindset of the elders of today who are stuck in the politics and attitudes of a benighted past

All right minded Malaysians must summon the courage to reject Hasan Ali and his ilk wherever they may be, and say to them, that there is no room for religious fascism.

By the way, whatever he is drinking in the morning, he should cut it down by half. It's hard to talk with all that foam.

Perak disakat sebagai Darul Kartun

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 03:58 PM PST

Apa hujahnya? Sanggupkah NGO mengemukakan hujah? NGO jangan jadi macam Kulup Besar melenting tanpa hujah.

Orang Perak jangan memalukan Rajanya. Raja Perak pernah jadi Ketua Hakim Negara.

Sindiran politik Nabi Ibrahim a.s. lagi hebat. Setelah baginda menghancur semua berhala, ditanya baginda  siapa menghancurkan semua berhala.

Justeru, katanya, pihaknya mahukan usaha mendapatkan perkenan  Yang di-Pertuan Agong agar langkah mewartawkan undang-undang ditangguhkan.

"Rang Undang-undang itu harus ditarik balik dengan segera," katanya.

Majlis Agama Islam Terengganu bincang isu dua solat Jumaat esok

Posted: 20 Dec 2011 11:52 PM PST
