Sports unites people, says Muhyiddin

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 08:12 AM PDT

June 28, 2013

Sports is an effective agent in uniting people of various races and religion in the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said proof that sports continued to be a uniting factor could be seen through the unwavering support by people when national athletes fight to make the country proud at sport championships here and abroad.

According to Muhyiddin, sports is an important medium in realising the country's goal and vision as well as forming an active and competitive society.

"Because of this, the government is committed towards ensuring sports is given priority in the country," he said when opening the 16th Malaysia Games (Sukma) at the Bukit Jalil Mini-Stadium here tonight.

Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the government will continue to widen its initiatives by providing a platform to identify talented young athletes to represent the country in the future.

He said the ministry was also involved in increasing efforts to produce more students who are active in sports, with the One Student One Sport programme introduced in 2011.

"The Education Ministry is actively ensuring the programme's effectiveness, especially in preparing facilities, training equipment, qualified coaches and training programmes that are more structured have have continuity," he said.

Besides that, Muhyiddin said efforts to develop sporting talent through Sukma was an important catalyst for the country.

He said he was proud of Sukma which had contributed towards producing stars such as world number one badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei, world number one squash player Datuk Nicol Ann David and national cycling champion Mohd Azizul Hasni Awang.

He also hoped that more national records, Sukma records and personal records would be set by athletes in this edition of the Sukma.

"I hope this event will set a high standard in efforts to give sufficient exposure to the athletes taking part," he said.- June 28, 2013.

Eight Turks test positive for doping

Posted: 28 Jun 2013 06:55 AM PDT

June 28, 2013

Eight Turkish athletes, including an Olympic silver medallist hammer thrower, tested positive for banned substances at this month's European Team Championships in Gateshead, Turkish media reports said on Friday.

If confirmed, the test results would be a fresh blow for Turkish athletics after officials said last month 1,500 metres Olympics gold medallist Asli Cakir Alptekin faced a lifetime ban for an anti-doping offence.

Hammer thrower Esref Apak, who won a silver medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, was among the eight athletes who tested positive, according to Sabah newspaper and other Turkish media outlets.

The number of Turkish athletes who have tested positive in doping examinations this year has reached 24, Athletics Federation head Mehmet Terzi told reporters today.

"Unfortunately there is an impression that athletes or coaches are being protected. No athlete or coach is being protected... Our approach to this issue has always been 'zero tolerance'," Terzi added.

"Despite our close monitoring, an athlete can do it if he's determined to do it. Whoever does it must be caught and punished," Terzi, a former medal-winning athlete, said.

Sabah said that including the latest eight, a total of 15 Turkish athletes had tested positive for illegal substances in the last month, potentially harming Istanbul's bid to stage the 2020 Olympics.

Separately, eight weightlifters were left out of the Turkish national squad ahead of this month's Mediterranean Games in the Turkish city of Mersin after testing positive for doping, according to Turkish media reports.

Among those who previously tested positive, Cakir was charged on the basis of abnormal blood values from her biological passport. She had previously been given a two-year ban in 2004 after a positive dope test at the world junior championships.

Double European 100m hurdles champion Nevin Yanit, also faces a ban after "multiple positive findings in both in-competition and out-of-competition tests," the International Association of Athletics Federations said last month. -Reuters, June 28, 2013.

Japan OKs world’s first iPS stemcell clinical trial

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 04:29 PM PDT

June 28, 2013

Kyoto University for iPS REsearch Application have succeeded in growing human kidney tissue from stem cells. - AFP, June 28, 2013.Japan has given the green light to the world's first clinical trial using stem cells harvested from a patient's own body, officials said Thursday, testing a treatment that may offer hope to millions of people robbed of their sight.

A government committee approved proposals for tests aimed at treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common medical condition that causes blindness in older people, using "induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells", a health ministry official said.

The trial treatment will try to create retinal cells that can be transplanted into the eyes of patients suffering from AMD, replacing the damaged part of the eye. AMD, a condition that is incurable at present, affects mostly middle-aged and older people and can lead to blindness.

It afflicts around 700,000 people in Japan alone.

Stem cell research is a pioneering field that has excited many in the scientific community with the potential they believe it offers.

Stem cells are infant cells that can develop into any part of the body.

Until the discovery of iPS cells several years ago, the only way to obtain stem cells was to harvest them from human embryos.

This is controversial because it requires the destruction of the embryo, a process to which religious conservatives, among others, object.

Groundbreaking work done in 2006 by Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University, a Nobel Laureate in medicine last year, succeeded in generating stem cells from adult skin tissue.

Like embryonic stem cells, iPS cells are also capable of developing into any cell in the body, but crucially their source material is readily available.

Following the government approval, the Riken Center for Developmental Biology will start the world's first clinical trial using iPS cells as soon as next summer, a Riken spokesman said.

Riken will recruit six patients suffering from AMD, all aged at least 50 years, and take cells from their skin.

These cells will be genetically reprogrammed to become iPS cells.

The infant cells will then be nudged in the direction of developing into retina cells.

Once a network of retina cells has been developed -- a process that could take around 10 months - this can be transplanted into the patient's eye, the spokesman said.

Patients will be monitored over the next four years to determine how well the implants have performed, whether the body has accepted them and if they have become cancerous.

"Because no one in the world has used iPS cells in a clinical trial, what we are doing will set the standard," research leader Masayo Takahashi told the Mainichi, a daily paper.

"It's a daunting prospect, but one that brings joy."

She said she expects that patients in the initial trial will see only a very modest improvement in their sight.

"We don't want people to have excessive expectations," she said.

Kanji Takahashi, chief ophthalmologist at Kansai Medical University Hirokata hospital, told AFP it was a positive step, but not a done deal.

"The trial is a hope for AMD patients, but it will probably take years before the new treatment will actually contribute to improving the vision of many people." - AFP/Relaxnews, June 28, 2013.

Michael Jackson’s son testifies singer was unhappy with promoter

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 05:03 PM PDT

June 28, 2013

Michael Jackson's eldest son testified on Wednesday in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by his family against AEG Live that the late pop star was unhappy with the concert promoter in the run-up to his "This Is It" concert series in 2009.

Prince Jackson, 16, said he saw his father often get upset on the phone with AEG Live Chief Executive Officer Randy Phillips, but was unable to stand up for himself in disagreements.

"He would get off the phone, he would cry sometimes," Prince told jurors in a Los Angeles courtroom about his father. "He would say, 'They're going to kill me. They're going to kill me.' ... He was like my grandma. He was too kind to fight anybody."

Small parts of a video recording of Prince and younger sister Paris' deposition recorded months earlier had been played in court last week, but Prince was the first Jackson family member to testify in person at the trial.

Prince, who took the stand four years and one day after his father's death, was 12 when Jackson died at age 50 in Los Angeles from an overdose of surgical anesthetic propofol ahead of a series of comeback concerts in London in 2009.

The "Thriller" singer's mother, Katherine, is suing privately held AEG Live, which was promoting Jackson's "This Is It" concerts, for negligence in hiring Dr. Conrad Murray as his personal physician.

Murray was caring for the singer as he prepared for the shows and was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for administering the propofol that killed Jackson.

Prince, wearing a dark suit and tie, showed little emotion while testifying until he described his father's death, which was the first time any of Jackson's children have spoken publicly about it.

The teenager said he and his two younger siblings - sister Paris and brother Prince Michael II, also known as Blanket - were at their rented Los Angeles home when they heard a scream from the home's second level.

"I ran upstairs and I saw Dr. Conrad doing CPR on my dad on the bed," he said. "My dad was hanging halfway off the bed, and his eyes were rolled back in his head."

He added: "My sister was screaming the whole time, saying she wants her daddy. I was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, crying, waiting for the ambulance."

'IT HURT A LOT'

Prince, his voice cracking with emotion, said Murray told them in a hospital waiting room that Jackson had a heart attack.

"Sorry kids, your dad's dead," Prince remembered Murray telling him.

AEG Live has said it did not hire or supervise Murray and argues that Jackson had prescription drug and addiction problems for years before entering into any agreement with the company.

AEG Live also has said they could not have foreseen that Murray posed a danger to Jackson.

Katherine Jackson, 83, along with the singer's three children are listed as plaintiffs in the case. The trial began in late April and is expected to last for another month.

Earlier witnesses for the plaintiff have testified that Jackson had grown so weak he had difficulty executing dance moves and recalling song lyrics, and that Murray's monthly salary from AEG Live would be a conflict of interest in his care of the singer.

Prince also testified that Jackson's death has taken an emotional toll on the children.

"I have a hard time sleeping," the teen said. "I became emotionally distant from a lot of people."

Paris, 15, who has been hospitalized after an apparent suicide attempt earlier this month, has taken the loss of her father the hardest, Prince said.

"I think out of all of our siblings, she was probably hit the hardest because she was my dad's princess," he said. "It hurt a lot and she definitely is dealing with it in her own way."

Following Prince's testimony, the Jackson family's attorney, Brian Panish, said at a news conference outside the courthouse that Prince had answered questions consistently and credibly.

"He is a nice, bright young man who has a great future and I think that's because of the father who raised him," Panish said.

The attorney added that Jackson's youngest son, Blanket, will not be summoned in this case, and a decision is still being made on whether Paris will be called up to testify. - Reuters, June 28, 2013.

You can’t fire me! I resign!

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 03:56 PM PDT

June 28, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

Watergate - the granddaddy of all political and government scandals. US President Richard Nixon was forced to resign in 1974 as investigations against him being involved in a break-in looked like it was going to lead to an impeachment and conviction.

Karl Rove, President George W. Bush's former Senior Advisor, went under investigation for 'improper political influence over government decision-making' and was forced to resign in 2007. Well, the US has a lot of high-profile scandals.

In the UK, a sex scandal at 10 Downing Street is currently putting Prime Minister David Cameron in a bind (apparently, details can't be spared at the moment due to legalities). Actually, the UK government has been facing a string of scandals in the very recent past.

Last week, a Conservative Party MP, Patrick Mercer, was forced to resign the Conservative whip after being caught by the BBC for receiving money in return for posing questions in parliament.

A Liberal Democrat MP, Mike Hancock, will also go through the motions to see if he will be expelled from the party over allegations of sexual assault. And a Tory MP, Nigel Evans, has been arrested for sexual assault.

Many countries all around the world have all kinds of governmental scandals that have caused so many politicians and government officials to be forced to resign from their positions because what they did were wrong.

In other words, if someone has done something wrong (and most importantly, get caught doing it!), the only right thing for that person to do is to own up, apologise and resign from his or her position of trust.

Now Malaysia isn't void of her fare share of governmental scandals either. We've had quite a few that have piqued our interest and created a lot of stir in the country, and even internationally.

But what is slightly different in Malaysia, as compared to the rest of the world, is that the rate of officials resigning and admitting to the blame when they are caught is so much lower than anywhere else around the world.

And that brings me to several recent cases in Malaysia that have caught the attention of the public (me specifically!). The first is of the assault case against the Home Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Businessman Amir Abdullah Bazli sued the Home Minister for punching him and fracturing his nose in 2006. He was the Deputy Minister of Information at that time, and has been unsuccessful in all his bids to strike out the case.

Seeing that he holds the important portfolio of looking after the country's internal security, opposition politicians have been asking that Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid be sacked from his position or at least suspended until the civil suit case is resolved.

Well, to be fair, the case isn't resolved and the Home Minister has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing yet. And every single individual in Malaysia has a right to a fair trial and to be able to defend himself – innocent until proven guilty. So be it for now.

Then there is the case against the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, in which he was recently found responsible for the death of police detainee A. Kugan in 2009 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

The judge had stated that there were elements of a cover-up by the then Selangor police chief, when he failed to classify the investigations into the death as murder, based on the injuries suffered by the deceased.

Remember 1999 and Tan Sri Rahim Noor? The former Inspector-General of Police was convicted of beating Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim while he was in custody and spent 20 days in prison as well as paying a fine of RM2,000. And he was forced to resign.

Enough said.
