Suplicy and the city

SAO PAULO, Nov 27 — When in Rome do as Romans do. So when we find ourselves in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil (and indeed South America), we knew we had to take the lead from the locals.

This means starting the day late like a real Paulistano (what São Paulo residents call themselves) and lingering for a while longer than necessary in bed before strolling to a café for breakfast at a time when most folks elsewhere are considering their lunch options.

We could hardly do better than dropping by Suplicy Cafés Especiais in the stylish neighbourhood of Jardim Paulista for a spot of coffee and an early dose of people-watching.

The morning after

Don't worry about walking into the café like a zombie after one round of drinking too many the previous night, with your shades on like a movie star. Other café customers are likely to be wearing their shades too, but mostly to hide the fact their eye bags are heavier than regret. São Paulo is not a city of early risers but some brave souls will do anything for their coffee.

Not much conversation is needed either (verbal skills being somewhat limited before noon). This is not a café where you need to know the baristas by name to get some service, nor is it one of those anonymous come-gulp-and-go dumps that litter the city's morning espresso boulevard.

You don't even need to smile.

The baristas will be more than happy to take your order, pull perfect shots, foam milk to a creamy finish, and delight you with their latte art. (They take requests, if you're lucky.)

The industrial-chic decor (left); a perfectly crafted cappuccino doppio.

Suplicy Cafés Especiais has a modern, industrial-chic look to it, plenty of clean lines and natural sunlight coming in through the storefront windows. Outside, other Paulistanos are still slowly waking up and leaving their apartments; everyone seems to be fetching their morning papers or walking their dogs. There are, you realise to your amusement, as many different types of Paulistanos as there are types of dogs.

There are the A.M. gym rats pounding the pavement with their pale, muscular Argentinian mastiffs. You have deeply tanned women of wealth and middle years strutting down the street with decades-younger male models and King Charles spaniels; a toy dog on one leash, a toy boy on the other. There are the grandfather types, silver-haired or completely bald, always with a cigarro in their mouths and their Campeiro bulldogs, as grumpy-looking as they are.

The only ones who don't seem to have a canine companion are the fashionable young parents with their double baby strollers. (Their children seem inordinately well-behaved, as though it would be improper to squeal or wail in public.)

But enough about the people; we're here for the coffee.

Magazine and orange juice... perfect start to the morning.

A falia de café

I would certainly recommend ordering their cappuccino doppio which has enough of a kick to ward off most hangovers. Pair that with one of their crumbly, clove-scented banana muffins for a light morning bite when you really can't handle anything more substantial. And don't forget some freshly squeezed orange juice for your recovery vitamins (you will need them after partying in São Paulo's many night clubs).

There's nothing quite like a leisurely cup of coffee and something to read.

Certainly owner Marco Suplicy had precisely this experience in mind when he first opened the café in 2002. Suplicy comes from a venerable família de café (coffee family) as his grandfather was a coffee broker in the 1920s. Meanwhile he also gets beans for his café from a small farm in the Minas Gerais state of Brazil. This farm had been in his wife's family for over seven generations; these folks are serious about their coffee.

A yummy banana muffin (left); enjoying the coffee and the view.

What this means is that Suplicy is able to control and participate in every stage of the coffee-production process from seed to cup. They are able to do their own roasting and choose only the best beans for their customers, particularly coffees farmed at altitudes above 1,000 meters. This, plus the lower temperature, allows the maturation to happen slowly, which brings out the natural sweetness and body of the coffee.

Suplicy also emphasises the skilful preparation of coffee so he invests heavily in training his crew. One of his baristas, Rafael Godoy, is this year's Brazilian Barista Champion. Today our cappuccinos are carefully crafted by another competition barista, Plínio Eduardo, who also manages the Jardim Paulista café.

Small and sustainable

Eduardo asks us if we'd like a tour of some of their coffees and we nod our heads eagerly. Showing us the coffee-bagging area at the back of the café (the coffee roaster is here too), he shares that Suplicy only selects beans that are produced in estates with certified sustainable environmental and social practices.

Suplicy's coffee roaster.

"For a lighter roast, we have a Yellow Bourbon from the Santa Izabel Estate that is sweet with a slight spiciness to it," he says. "Our organic medium roast comes from Camocim and is a well-balanced coffee. If you like it dark, you might want to try our Castelhana Dark Roast for a bolder flavour."

I spot a smaller batch of coffee hidden in the corner. "What about that?" I ask, curious.

Eduardo smiles approvingly, "That's our Santa Alina micro-lot. We don't have much of that as it comes from a hill farm. Due to the steepness of the slope, the harvesting is more difficult because machines cannot get to the coffee trees easily. Therefore most of the picking is done by hand."

We decide this is the coffee we will be bringing home with us and Eduardo obliges by packing fresh bags of the roasted beans for me. Micro-lot coffee tends to be more expensive not only because of the small quantities produced but also because coffee grown in micro-climates offers more unique flavours.

After paying for our coffee, we walk out into the streets of São Paulo and spend a few more hours absorbing the sights and sounds of the city. We want to remember everything but we know we won't. Sometimes we don't have to. Just one or two exceptional memories will do.

Freshly roasted Santa Alina micro-lot beans being packed.

When we get home, we can't resist trying out the Santa Alina right away. Brewed using the siphon method, the resultant cup is sweet with a fruity aroma. We detect notes of dried apricots. It's quite delicious.

The only thing better than bringing a small bit of your travel experience back with you is discovering it's as wonderful as you remember it to be. This will do, you tell yourself, until you can return again.

One chef, one ingredient: Georges Blanc on Bresse chicken

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:28 AM PST

PARIS, Nov 26 — If you are what you eat, then it could be said that chefs are what they cook. In an exclusive weekly series from Relaxnews, some of the top chefs from around the world share their favourite food ingredient to cook with, and eat. Whether it be peas, asparagus, squash or sea urchin, the answers are as varied as the chefs themselves. French chef Georges Blanc — from the Michelin three-star restaurant that bears his name, located in the French town of Vonnas — went for a special breed of poultry from the Rhône-Alpes region, Bresse chicken.

Georges Blanc. — ©Antoine Maillon

Relaxnews: Why did you choose this ingredient?

Georges Blanc: Because it's an iconic product from our region. I've presided over its Interprofessioal Committee for nearly 30 years now, and I'm also the region's ambassador. Bresse chicken has been given the AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée), the most prestigious sign of quality for a food product.

R: What's your favourite memory or anecdote associated with the product?

GB: Bresse chicken has been cooked with cream by three Blanc mothers (referring to his mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who were all acclaimed cooks) who settled here way before me, since 1872.

R: When is the ingredient in season?

GB: All year round.

R: What's the best way to prepare or cook it?

GB: Keeping it simple, with cream.

R: What other product can you combine it with to surprise your guests?

GB: A yellow wine sauce with spring morel garnish.

R: What are the most common mistakes people make when cooking it?

GB: Make sure you don't overcook the breasts so as to keep them juicy and tender.

R: How would you integrate it into your restaurant menu?

GB: Bresse poultry with a foie gras and Champagne sauce, royale de foie blond (a creamy poultry liver preparation) with artichoke, a sweet garlic wafer and Vonas crepes, inspired by the official G7 dinner for heads of state that was held in Lyon on June 27, 1996.

R: What wine is best paired with it?

GB: A Moulin-à-vent, from the Beaujolais region. — AFP/Relaxnews

Vettel committed to Red Bull after third title

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:43 AM PST

LONDON, Nov 26 – Sebastian Vettel has dampened speculation he is set to jump ship from Red Bull and join Ferrari in 2014 by saying he is "extremely committed" to the team who helped him claim a third consecutive Formula One title yesterday.

The exact nature of Vettel's contract with Red Bull is unclear, but the German driver said he was tied to the constructor until the end of 2014.

Speculation has surrounded Vettel's future at Red Bull since Ferrari principal Stefano Domenicali said in June the 25-year-old (picture) and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso could "easily co-exist together".

Alonso, a double world champion who was narrowly beaten to the title by Vettel in Brazil on Sunday, has a contract with the Italian team until the end of 2016 and is very much the number one in the current lineup with Brazilian Felipe Massa.

"I have a contract until – I think you know better than me – at this stage, until the end of '14," Vettel  told reporters.

"I'm very happy with what we have achieved so far and I don't think this story is over yet. I'm very happy and extremely committed to give everything I have, also in the next years when I'm with them.

"At the moment, I don't see any point thinking about another team or something else. I'm extremely happy in the position I am. It's incredible what we have achieved."

Massa's Ferrari contract runs until the end of next year.

Vettel hailed his third title as his most difficult having found it harder to assert himself in a topsy-turvy season that began with seven different winners in the first seven races.

Singapore proved the turning point and Vettel went on to win four races in a row to take the lead from Alonso in South Korea.

"In that way, I think it was (the hardest title) because people tried everything, inside the lines, outside the lines, to beat us and the amount of questions we had to deal with, stuff we had to deal with throughout the season didn't make our lives easier but the key was to remain ourselves and I think that made the difference in a way," he said. – Reuters

Atletico’s title credentials getting stronger every week

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:35 AM PST

MADRID, Nov 26 – Amidst all the noise created by Barcelona's record-equalling start to La Liga and Real Madrid's problems in trying to keep pace, Atletico Madrid are quietly making their case to be considered title contenders.

Atletico's resounding 4-0 home win over Sevilla, who were forced to play most of the game with 10 men yesterday, left them second in the standings only three points behind Tito Vilanova's unbeaten leaders.

Diego Simeone's side have won 11 of 13 games, bettering their start to the league and King's Cup-winning campaign of 1995-96 of which he played a part on the pitch, and it does not look like faltering just yet.

"Atletico are fighting for the top spot, not just for the European positions," Sevilla coach Michel told reporters at the Calderon yesterday.

The Europa League winners have to play Barca and champions Real away in the next three weeks, but hold an eight-point advantage over Jose Mourinho's side in third, ahead of the city derby at the Bernabeu next Saturday.

"They are keeping pace with Barcelona and have an important advantage over Madrid," added former Spain midfielder Michel, who won six league titles as a player with Real Madrid.

"The difference between great teams and the rest is their conviction and firepower, and Atletico have both."

Yesterday's win was set in motion by leading scorer Radamel Falcao, who struck his 11th goal of the campaign when he netted from the penalty spot after 22 minutes.

Although Falcao's predatory instincts are a part of the explanation for Atletico's success, midfielder Tiago pointed out the influence of coach Simeone.

"He has given us a different mentality," the Portugal international told reporters about the former Argentina captain.

"We knew we had a good squad with great players but we didn't believe in ourselves. The boss has managed to get us to do that.

"He demonstrates his confidence in us week by week and we are responding to it."

Hanging on to Falcao in the January transfer window after media reports strongly linked Chelsea with a move for the Colombia striker will be a key factor in Atletico possibly extending their purple patch.

Atletico, who have already qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League, host third-tier Jaen in a King's Cup last-32 second leg on Wednesday before their derby date next weekend.

The 2010 cup finalists hold a 3-0 advantage from the first leg. – Reuters

Wacky Korean singer who made YouTube history

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:22 AM PST

South Korean rapper Psy arrives at the 40th American Music Awards in Los Angeles, California, in this November 18, 2012 file photo. — Reuters pic

SEOUL, Nov 26 — Psy made his quirky debut in South Korea's K-pop industry back in 2001 but it wasn't until July that he began shooting to global fame with "Gangnam Style" — now the most-watched video of all time on YouTube.

A rare sense of humour and irony distinguished the chubby rapper, now 34, from his peers in the manufactured world of K-pop and made him an unlikely worldwide success.

As of Sunday "Gangnam Style" — whose wacky music and dance moves mock the hedonistic lifestyle of the upmarket southern Seoul neighbourhood — had registered almost 814 million views in four months.

The video has inspired thousands of online imitations of Psy's famous horse-ride dance, and flash mobs of tens of thousands in Paris, Rome and Milan.

The song peaked at number two on the US Billboard's pop chart for seven weeks in a row after sweeping the charts in countries including Australia and Britain.

World figures swept up in the fever include UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, British Prime Minister David Cameron and US President Barack Obama, who either tried out the dance or marvelled at its popularity.

Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, gained the ultimate showbiz accolade by teaming up with Madonna in the pop diva's concert and performing a special version of "Gangnam Style" with MC Hammer in the American Music Awards.

YouTube called the music video — which Saturday overtook Justin Bieber's "Baby" in number of views — "a massive hit at a global level unlike anything we've ever seen before".

Billboard.com noted it racked up the YouTube milestone in about four months compared to more than two years for "Baby", calling it "nothing short of a pop culture phenomenon".

Psy's dramatic rise has been viewed with a mixture of pride and surprise in his home country, whose music industry has long been dominated by prettified, highly-manufactured girl and boy bands.

Having taken Asia by storm over the past decade with bubblegum hooks and dance moves staged with military precision, K-pop in recent years has garnered a small but growing fan base among teenagers in parts of Europe and America.

But none has come close to the worldwide popularity of the homely Psy.

"Psy is right at the opposite of our typical K-pop stars who are extremely preened and whose every single move is strictly dictated by their agent," prominent music critic Kang Hun told AFP.

Humour, especially satire, is rare in the mainstream Korean music scene and that, coupled with Psy's embrace of his anti-pop idol looks, has set him apart.

The singer, well known at home for his humorous and explosive stage performances, has long been a somewhat provocative figure in Korea.

He was once convicted in Seoul of smoking marijuana. Several of his earlier songs and music videos were banned for those aged under 18 because of what state censors deemed to be overly sexual lyrics or bad language.

In 2007 Psy was forced to serve a second period of compulsory military service after it was revealed that he had continued with his showbiz interests during his first two-year stint.

"Psy has long had very freewheeling, humorous and even provocative elements in his songs which are utterly lacking in most young K-pop idols," Kang said.

"I think 'Gangnam Style' is a pinnacle of such a humourous, non-serious bad-boy style of his. And apparently people around the world can relate to his self-deprecating sense of humour."

Psy himself says he invites laughter and not ridicule.

"My motto is to be funny, but not stupid," he once said in an interview with Yonhap news agency.

It remains to be seen if "Gangnam Style" will prove anything more than a one-hit wonder. Psy is set to release a new album in English and Korean early next year, which will be distributed globally.

But even if it takes off, it will be hard to replicate the success of "Gangnam Style", said Han Koo-Hyun, the head of the Korean Wave Research Institute.

"His next song will be able to rack up at least hundreds of millions of views due to the popularity of 'Gangnam Style' but will never be more popular than 'Gangnam Style', said Han.

"This is too huge a success to accomplish twice." — AFP/Relaxnews

Olympic opening ceremony wins UK theatre award

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 07:16 AM PST

LONDON, Nov 26 — Film director Danny Boyle won an Evening Standard Theatre Award late yesterday for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, which was warmly praised in Britain but befuddled many overseas viewers.

The ceremony, a kaleidoscopic romp through Britain's recent history packed with references to literature and music, was honoured with the Beyond Theatre award by the free London newspaper.

Evening Standard editor Sarah Sands, who was also a judge at the annual awards, said the ceremony became a "metaphor for national hope."

"If we could achieve this, we could achieve anything," she said. "Boyle managed to find a way of showing us who we are, as if he were poet laureate. He did all this on an austerity budget. He went beyond theatre but stayed within the limits of the Treasury."

Best play was "Constellations", which premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in January to rave reviews, while best director went to National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner's modern-day adaptation of the Shakespeare play "Timon of Athens".

Simon Russell Beale picked up the best actor award for his portrayal of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in "Collaborators", while the best actress prize was awarded to Hattie Morahan for her role in the Young Vic revival of Ibsen's "A Doll's House".

"Sweeney Todd" scooped the best musical category, Lolita Chakrabarti was named most promising playwright for "Red Velvet" and best design went to Soutra Gilmour for her work on John Osborne's "Inadmissible Evidence" and Greek tragedy "Antigone".

Playwright David Hare and actress Judi Dench both picked up lifetime achievement awards, actor Matthew Tennyson was named outstanding newcomer and Simon Godwin won the emerging director prize. — Reuters

Thousands protest in Bangladesh after deadly blaze

DHAKA, Nov 26 — Thousands of angry textile workers demonstrated in the outskirts of Dhaka today after a fire swept through a garment workshop at the weekend, killing more than 100 people in Bangladesh's worst-ever factory blaze.

The fire has put a spotlight on global retailers that source clothes from Bangladesh, where the cost of labour is low — as little as US$37 (RM113) a month for some workers — and rights groups have called on big-brand firms to sign up to a fire safety programme.

Workers from Tazreen Fashions and residents blocked roads and forced the closure of other factories in the industrial suburb of Ashulia, where the huge fire started on Saturday, demanding those responsible for the disaster be punished.

"I haven't been able to find my mother," said one worker, who gave her name as Shahida. "I demand justice, I demand that the owner be arrested."

Police and officials said narrow exits in the nine-storey building trapped workers inside, killing 111 people and injuring more than 150.

"This disastrous fire incident was a result of continuing neglect of workers' safety and their welfare," said Amirul Haque Amin, president of Bangladesh's National Garment Workers Federation.

"Whenever a fire or accident occurs, the government sets up an investigation and the authorities — including factory owners — pay out some money and hold out assurances to improve safety standards and working conditions. But they never do it."

Pressure to global firms

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws. Overcrowding and locked fire doors are common.

More than 300 factories near the capital shut for almost a week this year as workers demanded higher wages and better conditions.

At least 500 people have died in clothing factory accidents in Bangladesh since 2006, according to fire brigade officials.

Bangladesh has about 4,500 garment factories and is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 per cent of its US$24 billion annual exports.

The International Labour Rights Forum (ILRF) said that US-based PVH Corp, whose brands include Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Van Heusen, entered into an agreement with unions and other rights groups earlier this year to develop a fire safety programme in Bangladesh, but others have not signed up.

"We hope the tragic fire at Tazreen will serve as an urgent call to action for all major brands that rely on Bangladesh's low wages to make a profit," ILRF Executive Director Judy Gearhart said in a statement yesterday.

"Their voluntary and confidential monitoring programmes have failed; now it is time to come together and make a contractual commitment to workers, and to involve workers and their organisations in the solution."

Hong Kong-listed Li & Fung said in a statement it had placed orders for garments from Tazreen Fashions, which were being manufactured on the premises where the fire broke out.

It said it would provide relief to victims' families, and carry out its own investigation into what caused the blaze.

The European spokesman for retailer C&A said Tazreen Fashions was due to deliver 220,000 sweatshirts for its Brazilian stores over the coming three months.

He said an independent company normally audits companies and factories for standards and working conditions before C&A enters into a business relationship with them, but the audit of Tazreen Fashions had not yet been carried out.

A spokesperson for US retail chain Wal-Mart Stories Inc in India said the company was "trying to determine if the factory has a current relationship with Walmart or one of our suppliers". — Reuters

Vettel committed to Red Bull after third title

Long-distance runners lap up miles for the love of it

NEW YORK, Nov 26 – Although many people begin running as a practical path to weight loss or fitness, for many it becomes a love affair as the miles increase.

Tom Holland, running coach and author of "The Marathon Method," tells his clients that running for 3 miles (4.8 kilometres) was horrible for him too, but farther down the road things changed.

"It happens for different people at different times and different distances: that runner's high," he said in an interview.

Holland calls it a cardiovascular turning point where the run becomes exponentially easier.

"There's a point where the run becomes enjoyable," he said. "Whether this happens at 8 (12.8 kilometres) or 10 or 12 miles down the road, it will happen," he said.

A veteran of 60 marathons, Holland was set to run his ninth New York City Marathon earlier this month, until the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometre) race was cancelled in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

"Over 100,000 people apply to the New York City Marathon each year," he said. "There must be something there that people want."

Gregory Chertok, a sports psychologist with the American College of Sports Medicine, said many people are drawn to running because it's an uncomplicated activity.

"Put one foot in front of the other and when you work hard, you improve," Chertok said. "Not everything in life is so simple. You could spend 10 years in a ballet studio and not become a ballerina."

Few runners enter a marathon to win it, he said.

"It's so rare in sporting culture for those who aren't physically or aerobically gifted to feel included in something that's competitive but not exclusive."

While it's tough to categorise athletes, Chertok said, long-distance running seems to be appreciated by those who enjoy solitude – or periods of solitude – and are OK with monotony.

Chertok differentiates external from internal motivation and said studies show that people who set goals based on intrinsic motivation are more successful.

"People run with the initial goal of losing weight or getting fit, which are external goals, but during training they realise they love running, so they end up running for internal reasons," he said.

Qualitative evidence for the runner's high suggests that for those prone to its euphoria, it probably contributes to running's addictive quality.

"Those that have it swear by it," he said.

Most sports medicine practitioners would agree that people are born to be mobile, he said, but not necessarily to run long distances.

"Physicians will deter people from running marathon distances, but it's such a powerful allure that it becomes greater than risk of hamstring injury," he said.

Richard Finn, spokesman for New York Road Runners, organisers of the New York City Marathon, agrees that long distances do not suit everyone.

"Running 26.2 miles (42.2 kilometres) is a big, bold brash undertaking," he said. "You've got to put heart, soul, mind, body in it for months. It's like climbing Mount Everest. Not everybody should be doing it."

He said a runner is a runner whether you're doing a marathon or a five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race.

"We do running 365 days a year, since 1959," Finn said of the New York Road Runners. "Get those sneakers on and run, even on a treadmill. We're not elitist. We think running is good for you."

Holland believes running also exposes our weakest link so he urges novices to start slow.

"Running is an amazing cheap thing that can make us feel great about ourselves," he said. "But the secret to running is balance. We're born to run but we're not born to run six days a week at the start." – Reuters

VIENNA, Nov 26 – A custom-built Leica camera that once belonged to influential American photographer David Douglas Duncan fetched more than €1.6 million (RM6.34 million) at a Vienna auction on Saturday.

Duncan used the 1955 black M3D Leica when he worked for Life magazine. The final sale including fees was €1.68 million.

Leica built the camera specially for Duncan, according to the Westlicht photo gallery, which ran the auction in the Austrian capital.

Its estimate had been between €250,000 and €300,000.

Duncan is best known for his combat photos, including pictures taken during the Korean and Vietnam wars, and his close friendship with Pablo Picasso.

Saturday's sale also included thousands of NASA vintage photographs and slides that went for €200,000.

Another batch of photographs of Russia's space exploration was sold for €60,000. – AFP/Relaxnews

Azmin optimis PR akan rampas Putrajaya selepas PRU13

Posted: 26 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PST

"Saya yakin pengundi muda dah matang," katanya lagi.

Betapa saya melihat para penduduk kampung terutamanya tuan rumah sangat terharu sehingga menangis kegembiraan kerana wakil rakyat itu sanggup turun meraikan majlis persandingan anaknya.
