After making number seven on the Ramen Rater's 'spiciest list' in August last year, it is now number one on the 'Top 10 Instant Noodles of All Time: 2014 Edition'.

The Penang homegrown brand beat 1,365 other instant noodles from around the world, including the 335 varieties American noodle reviewer Hans Lienesch had reviewed since last year, for the top spot.

Lienesch, who runs the Ramen Rater blog, gave the instant noodle five stars out of five and described it as "fantastic stuff".

"The noodles are just the right texture and gauge – not too wide or too narrow with a chewiness that is perfection.

"The broth is amazing – extremely spicy and features a strong curry flavor and a hearty finish.

"I am truly impressed with this one and would consider it to be the one I would love to eat every day. Bravo!" Lienesch wrote in his review.

The instant noodle rater said he had never heard of Penang until last June when he first had a taste of the white curry instant noodle by MyKuali.

He had little experience with Malaysian instant noodle varieties, he said.

"I had no clue what to expect and was absolutely elated with this one. My core interest in reviewing instant noodles is that I want to try new things every day. This was definitely something new to me," he added.

MyKuali's Penang white curry noodle beat Prima Taste's Laksa and Curry La Mian noodles from Singapore (second and third), Japan's Sapporo Ichiban Otafuku Okonomi Sauce Yakisoba (fourth), South Korea's Samyang Foods Maesaengyitangmyun Baked Noodles and Palso Cheese noodles (fifth and sixth), Malaysia's Mamee Chef Curry Laksa Flavour noodle (seventh), Singapore's Prima Taste Chilli Crab La Mian (eighth), South Korea's Nongshim Soon Veggie Noodle Soup (ninth) and Thailand's Mama Yentafo Tom Yum Mohfai Flavour instant noodles (10th).

Fast-selling phenomenon

The MyKuali brand has become a household name in Penang and other places in Malaysia. At times, people find the noodles hard to get as they are always low in stock, which is partly due to its popularity.

A phenomenon shortly after it was introduced in May last year, it is said to be the best curry instant noodle in the market – a success due to its curry paste that makes the noodle almost as good as the real thing serve by hawkers.

Consumers discuss the product and post photos of it on social media sites like Facebook, and even share information on when and where new stocks are available since the instant noodle sells faster than the manufacturer can make it.

Even guests at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's office on Level 28 of Komtar building leave with packs of the curry instant noodles as gifts.

The DAP leader occasionally gives the noodles away to close business partners and selected guests, not to everyone as there is hardly enough stock, one of his aides said.

"We buy and have at least a box on standby in case he wants to give away the famous noodles," she said, adding that her boss also buys them for his son who enjoys instant noodles.

There are even occassions when sponsors of state events ask Guan Eng's office to help put in their orders for the noodles with the manufacturer, as they too have found it difficult to buy sometimes.

Mini market operator Lim Goay Suan, 48, said she usually gets a supply of 20 to 50 boxes of the instant noodles from the manufacturer, Sky Thomas Food Industries Sdn Bhd.

Each box (carton) has 12 packages, each containing four packs of the noodles.

"It only takes a few hours to sell all of them. The demand is that good. Many of my regulars buy in bulk because they send them to relatives and their children who are studying overseas.

"They sell so fast that sometimes I am forced to limit the number of purchases per customer to ensure others get a chance to buy the noodles too.

"It is a normal thing if customers have to wait days to a week to buy the noodles, which always sell out very quickly," she told The Malaysian Insider at her shop in Seri Delima, Penang recently.

Goay Suan's Suan Hin mini market sells dry goods, vegetables, fresh fish, meat and poultry, and is a stone's throw away from a popular coffee shop in the neighbourhood.

When the 200 boxes arrived at her shop recently, there were as many people buying the noodles as there were customers buying fresh produce.

During the busy morning, she paused to pick up the ringing phone and told her customer on the line that a new stock of the much sought after noodle had just arrived.

As expected, they sold fast. There were customers buying entire boxes of the instant noodles.

"I was first captivated by the product myself when the noodle's manufacturer conducted a product sampling in front of my shop last year when the noodle was first introduced.

"They just set up a makeshift stall by the road and people made a beeline for it as soon as they smelled the soup.

"People loved the taste immediately and they started telling others about the product," she said.

Goay Suan, who had been selling Sky Thomas' cooking paste products for some time, found the noodle irresistible herself and decided to carry it too.

"I don't sell food products that I don't think is delicious," she added.

The MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle is currently sold in selected mini markets, wet markets, supermarkets and hypermarkets like Giant and Cold Storage nationwide.

The price for a pack of four ranges from RM6.90 to RM7.90, with some outlets selling at over RM8.

Expanding horizons

Sky Thomas founder and marketing manager Thomas Tang said the company sells 30,000 cartons of the product a month, with a daily output at 1,500 cartons.

"Most of the outlets carrying the product run out of stock within a week. As the demand is high, our present capacity still cannot serve the market demand. We are also still a new company," he told The Malaysian Insider in an email interview recently.

However, there will be an increase in output soon, as the company is expecting its new plant in Bukit Minyak to be ready for operation this July.

With the new factory being five times larger, Tang said daily production is expected to increase by seven to eight times.

"With the increased output, we hope to hit RM30 million in sales this year," he said.

The company is also planning to increase its export of the noodle, which is now at 40% and making RM600,000 worth of sales per month in foreign markets like Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Tang said the company is now working out the distribution networks in the United States and Europe.

After the success of the white curry noodle, which also made the Top 10 Spiciest Instant Noodle of All Time 2013 list on the American food blog 'The Ramen Rater', the company will introduce one or two new products to the MyKuali brand this year, he said.

"For now, our new Hokkien and Tomyum instant noodles are still undergoing research and development," he said.

Hokkien and Tomyum noodles are also popular hawker offerings in Penang. – May 2, 2014.

Magath fears relegation more than he fears for his job

Posted: 01 May 2014 07:54 AM PDT

May 01, 2014

Felix Magath (pic) is not fearing for his job even if Fulham's turbulent season ends in relegation from the Premier League, the 60-year-old who has never experienced such a fate as a manger said on Thursday.

Fulham are 19th in the 20-team league and probably need to win their last two matches against Stoke City and London rivals Crystal Palace to have a chance of ensuring their 13-season membership of the top flight does not come to an end.

At the very least they need one win from either of those two matches to give themselves any hope of staying up after dropping two vital points last week in a 2-2 draw with FA Cup finalists Hull City at Craven Cottage.

Fulham seemed set for a vital win when leading 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, before Hull struck twice to make Fulham's survival task significantly tougher and leave Magath facing relegation for the first time as a coach.

"I have never been relegated. I am a little afraid of that situation and don't need to know how it feels," the former Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Schalke manager, told reporters.

"I'm always nervous. Without being nervous, you can't be 100%, but I have no doubt about my future. I will remain here. I'm here to build a new team."

This was not the season US businessman Shahid Khan envisaged having when he bought the club from previous owner Mohamed Al-Fayed before the start of the season.

At the time it seemed his biggest problem was what to do with the statue of Al-Fayed's friend, the late singer Michael Jackson, that Al-Fayed erected at the ground.

In the event the statue of Jackson was not the only thing Khan has got rid off since arriving at Craven Cottage.

Magath became Fulham's third manager this season when he took over from the sacked Rene Meulensteen on February 14.

Meulensteen had only been in the job since the start of December when he replaced Dutchman Martin Jol.

Fulham have been in the bottom three since November apart from a brief spell under Meulensteen, but have never risen higher than 18th since Magath took over, although their performances have improved recently.

"I believe two wins will be enough," Magath, whose side are one point behind fourth-from-bottom Sunderland, said.

"We need three points to have the chance of staying up, of not being relegated. I know Stoke are a good team at home, but we are confident.

"The players want to show everybody that we are still alive and that we can stay in the league."

No team has yet been condemned to relegation, but in all likelihood three from Sunderland, Norwich City, Fulham and Cardiff City will be relegated, even though theoretically other clubs such as Aston Villa are still in danger.

Sunderland, who are 17th, have three matches to play and are on 32 points, the same number as 18th placed Norwich who have two matches to play against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Fulham have 31 with two matches to play, while bottom-placed Cardiff look set for an immediate return to the Championship having taken only 30 points from their 36 games. - Reuters, May 1, 2014.

Rashid blew whistle on Salim, now backs lifting of life ban from cricket

Posted: 01 May 2014 06:45 AM PDT

May 01, 2014

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif Thursday backed former team-mate Salim Malik in his bid to overturn a life ban imposed 14 years ago for match-fixing.

Latif, known for his fight against corruption in cricket, said Malik had suffered enough and should be allowed to coach or do similar work.

"Malik should be given relief now," Latif told AFP. "He is not playing or coaching cricket and has served 14 years of his ban."

Latif was the first to blow the whistle on match-fixing on Pakistan's tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1995, accusing Malik and other team-mates of wrongdoing.

Shane Warne, Tim May and Mark Waugh revealed the same year that Malik had offered them bribes to under-perform in matches on Australia's tour to Pakistan in 1994.

The allegations prompted the then-Pakistan government to conduct a judicial inquiry in 1998 through Lahore high court judge Malik Mohammad Qayyum who, after a two-years investigation, banned Malik and paceman Ataur Rehman for life.

The commission also fined six leading players: Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Mushtaq Ahmed, Inzamam-ul Haq and Akram Raza.

Rehman had his ban overturned by a one-man Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) commission in 2003.

Malik's ban was also overturned by a civil court in Lahore in 2008, but the decision has not been endorsed by either the PCB or the International Cricket Council (ICC).

On Wednesday Malik contacted PCB chairman Najam Sethi, seeking a review on his ban.

The PCB has promised to review the ban, but has not assured anything.

Latif said the PCB and ICC never endorsed the Qayyum commission report.

"ICC and PCB never endorsed the Justice Qayyum inquiry in totality and that's why Rehman got relief," said Latif, who played 37 Tests and 166 one-day internationals for Pakistan.

"If other players (fined by the Qayyum commission) can do cricket-related jobs in private leagues and with cricket boards, Malik deserves the same," said Latif, without naming anyone.

His former team-mate Mushtaq served as spin coach for England between 2010 to 2014 and is tipped to take a role in the Pakistan cricket team's management, despite a ban by the commission on him taking any role in the board or team. – AFP, May 1, 2014.

Geldof, a media and fashion personality in her own right and a mother of two boys, was found dead at her home in Wrotham, Kent, in southern England, on April 7.

After an inconclusive post-mortem examination into Geldof's death, Kent Police said investigations would continue but that the result of a toxicology report could take several weeks.

The Times said the result would be announced by Detective Chief Inspector Paul Fotheringham during a brief hearing in Gravesend, Kent.

Kent Police could not be reached for comment.

Peaches was only 11 when her mother, television presenter Paula Yates, died from a heroin overdose, aged 41.

Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, model Kate Moss and Sarah Ferguson, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, were among the mourners who attended Geldof's funeral in Davington, Kent, last month. – Reuters, May 1, 2014.

British actor Bob Hoskins dies aged 71

The short, stocky Londoner, who rose to fame in British gangster movies in the 1980s and went on to have a long career as a Hollywood character actor, died in hospital on Tuesday night.

Hoskins, who was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Globe for playing a petty criminal in "Mona Lisa" in 1986, retired in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Hollywood stars including Samuel L. Jackson and James Woods led tributes from the world of film, while his family spoke of their grief.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob," said a statement from his wife Linda and the couple's two children Rosa and Jack, as well as Hoskins's two children from his first marriage, Alex and Sarah.

"Bob died peacefully at hospital last night surrounded by family, following a bout of pneumonia," they said.

Hoskin's face was carried on the front page of Thursday's Independent newspaper and the Daily Telegraph's headline paid tribute to a "great actor and even greater man".

The Guardian called Hoskins "a man for the big role", the Daily Mail a "pint-sized street fighter with a giant talent", while the Sun signed off its editorial page by saying "RIP Bob, you were a one-off."

Born in Suffolk in eastern England after his mother was evacuated from London during World War II, Hoskins left school at the age of 15 and worked in a series of odd jobs, including in a circus and as a lorry driver.

He claimed he only got into acting by accident, after being mistakenly called to try out for a play while waiting for a friend to finish his audition.

Hoskins began working in TV and broke through into film with his portrayal of a doomed London gangster in "The Long Good Friday" in 1980, which won him a Bafta nomination.

Despite his diminutive stature, he was a powerful presence on screen, exuding seething, barely-concealed anger.

But he also had a comic touch, and one of his best known roles was as the detective trying to work out "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", the eponymous cartoon hero, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1989.

Although Hoskins was known for his distinctive Cockney accent, he renounced it for an American drawl when the work required, including in "Nixon", in which Hoskins played former FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover.

He claimed he was on standby to play Al Capone in Brian De Palma's Oscar-winning 1987 thriller "The Untouchables" before Robert De Niro agreed to the role.

More recent success came with a Globe nomination in 2006 for "Mrs Henderson Presents" with Judi Dench, while other hits included his role as the sailor Smee in Steven Spielberg's "Hook" and "Mermaids" with Cher and Winona Ryder.

Dench told BBC News she was "so very sorry to hear this news."

Fellow dame Helen Mirren said Hoskins had been "supportive and unegotistic" when they worked together on The Long Good Friday.

"I had the honour of watching the creation of one of the most memorable characters of British film," she added.

Hoskins was highly prolific and many of his films sank without a trace, a fact some critics attributed to his claim never to prepare for a new job.

But there was an outpouring of affection on Twitter following news of his death.

Samuel L. Jackson was one of the first to pay tribute, saying he was "truly saddened" at his death. "A truly gigantic talent & a gentleman. R.I.P," the film star said on Twitter.

James Woods, who starred with Hoskins in Oliver Stone's biopic "Nixon" in 1995, tweeted: "Oh man, what a terrible loss. A great guy and a superb artist."

Hoskins' last acting role was as one of the seven dwarves in the film "Snow White and the Huntsman", starring "Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart. – AFP, May 1, 2014.

Stigma of being detainee weighs on hopeful Syrian brides

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 07:24 PM PDT

May 01, 2014

Rebel fighters being deployed in the Bureij neighbourhood of Aleppo yesterday. Syria's three-year-old conflict intrudes in all walks of life, including marring the marriage prospects of its young people. – Reuters pic, May 1, 2014.Rebel fighters being deployed in the Bureij neighbourhood of Aleppo yesterday. Syria's three-year-old conflict intrudes in all walks of life, including marring the marriage prospects of its young people. – Reuters pic, May 1, 2014.A young Syrian woman hides a secret from all but her family and closest friends, knowing that within days she will have to share it with the man she hopes to wed.

Late last year the 32-year-old woman was seized by security forces in the heart of Damascus and held for several weeks after trying to deliver supplies to civilians trapped in rebel-held areas of the Syrian capital.

Now free, she is hoping to put the ordeal behind her and get married, and has started meeting potential suitors.

But Syria's three-year-old conflict intrudes in all walks of life. The young woman and her mother, fearing that news of her arrest might put those suitors off, do not know how to break the news to a future husband.

"We have to tell him about my detention before or during the next visit. It's the right thing to do," says the woman, who asked to be identified only as Mai, to protect her identity.

Her mother agrees, but fears that the stigma of detention might affect her daughter's prospects.

"I just feel awkward about it," says the mother. "My daughter was in detention. That isn't a statement I ever thought would come out of my mouth."

Stigma of female detainees

It is not just the perennial fear of all Syrians that, once they come to the attention of the ubiquitous security forces, they – and anyone close to them – could be a marked person.

Activists and international rights groups have documented systematic abuse inside Syrian detention centres, with particular humiliation aimed at female detainees who are often forced to strip to their undergarments during interrogation sessions, at times enduring physical and sexual violence.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said it interviewed 10 Syrian women last year who had been detained – eight of them said they were abused or tortured while they were held.

Although men also suffer abuse in detention, the experience carries additional shame for women, particularly because of the taboo of sexual abuse by male interrogators.

"Isn't he going to wonder if Mai had been, you know, God forbid, assaulted? Or forced to strip nude or something?" said Mai's sister, referring to the most promising suitor.

Mai, a small, delicate looking woman, who sits upright and maintains intense eye contact as she speaks, says she was neither sexually nor physically assaulted.

Speaking in the living room of the modest east Damascus home where she meets her suitors, she says she endured "just a couple of interrogation sessions, and they used harsh words before they sent me back to the cell and seemed to forget about me".

But anxious friends and family are unconvinced and, as her sister says, are waiting for Mai "to open up and tell us all that has happened to her".

"When she first returned to us, I made an excuse to peek in on her in the shower, but she had no marks on her body. She seemed healthy," she said. "She's been in good spirits. We're so grateful, but I still wonder if she's suffering in silence."

Displaced and vulnerable

Batoul, 19, has her own set of war-related challenges to overcome before choosing one of the numerous suitors knocking on her door.

A year ago she fled fighting in Aleppo without her parents and siblings and came to Damascus to live with her grandmother.

Intelligent and attractive, Batoul hails from a middle class family that would normally have carefully vetted all marriage prospects. Now displaced and cut off from her Aleppo community, Batoul has attracted opportunist suitors.

"I think they see a young woman with broken wings, given that she's displaced and away from her family, and they think they can exploit her situation," Batoul's grandmother said.

She says she has turned away many suitors after discovering they lied or misled her, behaviour that would have been difficult to pull off in Aleppo's pre-war community.

But in Damascus, there was the one who failed to mention he is divorced with a child, and another who lied about his age, shaving off five years to make himself more suitable.

One suitor promised Batoul "money and houses in return for a secret marriage" – in other words, an illicit affair.

A few suitors passed muster, only to end up offering Batoul "an insultingly low" dowry.

"We know times are hard on everyone and Batoul will never get the dowry she would have in the good days before the war," said her grandmother.

"But I get the sense that people offer an even lower dowry still because they think she's desperate because she's displaced and they want to exploit that. That's what upsets me," she said in her one bedroom apartment in the Rukneddine district of Damascus.

In Islamic tradition, the groom pays a dowry to the bride. In Syria, the dowry comes in jewellery and cash, which the bride often uses to buy a new wardrobe and a wedding gown.

The groom is responsible for providing housing and all household-related expenses like furniture and appliances, which these days amount to a hefty sum.

As for Mai, she is gearing up to reveal her secret to her suitor.

"It will be a test for him," she says. "If he walks away because of my former detention, then he's weak and probably a government loyalist. If he sticks with me, then he's all right."

Her mother is not so sure. "I just want her married already. I want her to stay out of trouble." – Reuters, May 1, 2014.

Researchers say Neanderthals were not our dim-witted inferiors

Researchers in the Netherlands are citing data such as complex hunting methods and likely use of spoken language to indicate that Neanderthals were anything but the incompetent dimwits they have been portrayed as for more than a century. – Reuters pic, May 1, 2014. No offense, but your ancestors probably were no brighter than a Neanderthal.

That's the message a pair of researchers delivered on Wednesday after analysing archaeological evidence detailing the capabilities of Neanderthals, our closest extinct human relative, compared to the early modern humans who first crossed their path about 40,000 years ago.

The researchers said the findings show Neanderthals were anything but the incompetent dimwits that they are often deemed.

These include: complex hunting methods that required a group effort and planning in advance; likely use of spoken language; use of pigments probably for body painting; use of symbolic objects like eagle claws and perforated animal teeth, probably for pendants; and the sophisticated use of fire.

"We found no data in support of the supposed technological, social and cognitive inferiority of Neanderthals compared to their modern human contemporaries," said Wil Roebroeks, an archaeologist at the Leiden University in the Netherlands.

"The vision of primitive club-wielding brutes who in the end vanished when superior modern humans entered their world has been obsolete for a long time already," Roebroeks added.

Neanderthals prospered across Europe and Asia from about 350,000 to about 40,000 years ago, but disappeared after early modern humans trekked into Europefrom Africa.

Many scientists had postulated that Neanderthals were too stupid, clumsy and incompetent to survive a competition with the smart and inventive modern humans who invaded their territory.

Paola Villa, a curator at the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History, said the truth is far more complex.

Genetic evidence shows there was inter-breeding between Neanderthals and the early modern humans, Villa noted.

Male offspring resulting from inter-breeding were likely infertile, which may have contributed to a Neanderthal population decline, Villa said. The remnants of the Neanderthal population eventually may have been assimilated into the larger modern human population in a process that unfolded over a period of a few thousands of years, she added.

"In a certain sense, they are not completely extinct because some Neanderthal genes are present in our genome," Villa said.

There were some anatomical differences between the two species: the robust, large-browed Homo neanderthalensis and the sleeker Homo sapiens. For example, the bodies of Neanderthals were shorter and stockier than modern humans, and the middle part of the face was bigger, with a larger nose.

Writing in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, Villa and Roebroeks highlighted some of the capabilities of Neanderthals.

They pointed to archaeological sites in Europe such as one in southwestern France, where Neanderthals probably herded bison to their deaths by leading them into a sinkhole. At a Channel Islands site, fossil remains of mammoths and woolly rhinos that most likely had been the target of an organized hunt by Neanderthals were found at the base of a ravine. – Reuters, May 1, 2014.

Hari Buruh, Phil Ochs, Billy Bragg, Dylan dan kita

Posted: 30 Apr 2014 04:20 PM PDT

May 01, 2014

Bragg pula hanya muncul di era 1980-an.

Sepanjang kariernya, Ochs menghasilkan 8 album iaitu All the News Thats Fit to sing (1964), I Aint Marching Anymore (1965), Phil Ochs in Concert  (1966), Pleasures of the Harbour (1967), Tape From California (1968), Rehearsals From Retirement (1969), Greatest Hits (1970) dan Gunfight at Carnegie Hall (1975).

Cuba dengar lagu Highwayman, Power and Glory, I aint Marching Anymore dan War Is Over.

Joekidd memperkenalkan muzik Billy Bragg kepada saya di awal 1990-an dulu melalui album pertamanya Life's a Riot with Spy Vs Spy yang diterbitkan pada 1983.

Seterusnya saya mengikuti perkembangan album-album Bragg seperti album Talking with the Tax Man about Poetry (1986) dan The Internationale (1990).

Bragg berjaya menghasilkan 21 album sejak album pertamanya yang diterbitkan pada 1983 hinggalah album Tooth&Nail (2013).

Bragg, Phil Ochs, Dylan, Iwan Fals, Kembara, Gombloh, Fanky Sahilatua mahupun band rock legenda Indonesia Godbless antaranya, lagu-lagu mereka banyak bercerita tentang kehidupan yang realisitk sifatnya.

Macam PR hendak berpecah gara-garanya.

– Bernama, 1 Mei, 2014.
