Everton apologise for badge change, promise consultation

Posted: 29 May 2013 08:49 AM PDT

May 29, 2013

LONDON, May 29 – Everton have apologised to their fans for a controversial change to the club crest and have promised a full consultation with a view to changing it again after next season.

The English Premier League club unveiled the new badge on Saturday, redesigning the "tower" and, most controversially, removing the club's Latin motto 'Nil Satis Nisi Optimum' (Nothing But the Best is Good Enough).

Within days more than 22,500 fans had signed a petition to protest about the design and Everton, who are searching for a new manager after the departure of David Moyes to Manchester United, responded by apologising for a lack of consultation.

"We are sorry," the club said in a statement on their website (http://www.everton.com). "It is clear that you wanted to be involved in the selection of our new club crest.

"We regret we didn't ask every Evertonian about something that matters so much to every one of you."

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone added: "Our chairman had demanded widespread consultation and we stopped short of that. We talked to our Fans' Forum, our commercial partners and our experienced staff around the club. That was not enough."

Elstone said the Merseyside club were already committed to keeping the new badge on the kit for the 2013/14 season but would take notice of feedback for a further redesign.

Everton, founded in 1878 and one of the 12 original Football League members, first incorporated the local Prince Rupert's Tower, an 18th century "bridwell" or temporary jail, on their crest in 1938, though it did not appear on the shirts until 1978.

Ironically the new design, aimed at making the badge more modern and easily reproduced digitally, is a far more accurate depiction of the squat stone tower, which had been elongated in previous editions. – Reuters

Tsonga shows the French the way into round three

Posted: 29 May 2013 07:43 AM PDT

May 29, 2013

PARIS, May 29 – France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived a first-set scare to advance into the third round of the French Open with a 7-6 (6) 6-4 6-3 win against Finn Jarkko Nieminen today.

The sixth-seeded Tsonga (picture), the last French man to reach a grand slam final at the 2008 Australian Open final, next faces either French 25th seed Jeremy Chardy or Spain's Robert Bautista Agut.

Tsonga saved a set point in the first-set tiebreak but then turned up the power and never looked back on a chilly Court Philippe Chatrier.

He ended the contest on his first match point with a backhand passing shot after less than two hours.

"I was opportunistic, I made the most of my chances," Tsonga told a courtside interviewer.

Later today, Gael Monfils, who eliminated Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych in the first round, takes on Latvia's Ernests Gulbis.

Julien Benneteau, the 30th seed, faces German Tobias Kamke in the second round.

The last French man to win a grand slam singles title was Yannick Noah, who won the French Open in 1983. Henri Leconte was the last French man to reach the singles final at Roland Garros, in 1988. – Reuters

Amazon moving ahead with five original TV series

Posted: 29 May 2013 07:44 AM PDT

May 29, 2013

Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos demonstrates the Kindle Paperwhite during Amazon's Kindle Fire event in Santa Monica, California, September 6, 2012. — Reuters file picSAN FRANCISCO, May 29 — Amazon.com Inc said on Wednesday that it will make five original TV series, having used viewer feedback to pick the shows out of a group of 14 pilots filmed by the world's largest Internet retailer earlier this year.

The chosen pilots are: "Alpha House", a political comedy starring John Goodman; "Betas", a comedy about start-up culture in Silicon Valley; "Annebots", a kids' show about robots; "Creative Galaxy", an animated art adventure series; and "Tumbleaf", another kids' show about a small blue fox named Fig.

These are the first TV series ever made by Amazon and represent a major foray for the company into original programming delivered over the Internet, stepping up competition with Netflix Inc and Hulu.

The new series will be shown exclusively on Amazon's Prime Instant Video service later this year and in early 2014, the company said. Prime Instant Video is free for members of Amazon's Prime service, which offers two-day shipping and other benefits in the United States for US$79 (RM243) a year.

Amazon posted all 14 TV pilots online for anyone to watch in April and encouraged viewers to give feedback. The company analyzed the reviews and other data, such as how long people watched, to try to pick shows that are more likely to do well as full series.

"We're thrilled to have emerged safely from this harrowing exercise in online democracy," said Garry Trudeau, the Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist who created and wrote "Alpha House".

Amazon will shoot 12 more episodes of "Alpha House" to complete the first season, which will air starting in November, Trudeau added.

Pilots that were not picked up as full series included "Zombieland", a comedy based on the successful movie of the same name, and "Browsers", a musical comedy starring Bebe Neuwirth.

Rhett Reese, the writer and producer of "Zombieland", blamed viewer feedback for the TV show's demise.

"I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard "Zombieland" fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence," he wrote on Twitter.

The other pilots that did not make it were: "Dark Minions", "Onion News Network", "Supanatural", "Those Who Can't", "Positively Ozitively", "Sara Solves It" and "Teeny Tiny Dogs". — Reuters

Google goes Hollywood with ‘The Internship’

Posted: 28 May 2013 08:03 PM PDT

May 29, 2013

LOS ANGELES, May 29 — When "The Internship", a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, hits cinemas on June 7, Google will be taking more than a little interest in how the film is received.

In an unusual collaboration, the Internet giant was closely involved with the film, a US$58 million (RM174.4 million) Fox production that features two middle-aged watch salesmen determined to get a job at Google.

Amidst the comedic hijinks, the film delivers a picture of a kind and gentle Google, a company that offers free food and exercise classes and is in every respect the place you'd like to work. Various Google products get plugs in the film, and co-founder Sergey Brin gets a cameo role.

The favourable PR comes at an opportune moment for Google, whose unofficial motto is "Don't Be Evil" but which is often portrayed in far darker tones by privacy advocates, antitrust regulators and competitors such as Microsoft.

The US Federal Trade Commission recently began exploring a new set of antitrust allegations against the company, sources told Reuters last week.

"It's a good move. It's going to enhance and warm up Google's image perception," said former Coca-Cola chief marketing officer Peter Sealey, who is an adjunct professor at Claremont Graduate University and worked as a consultant for Google seven years ago.

The movie is a far cry from the Hollywood experience of rival Facebook. The social networking kingpin did not collaborate with "The Social Network", which focused heavily on the conflicts between founder Mark Zuckerberg and his early partners and did not make any of them look very good.

"Movies like this are always a risk," said Howard Bragman, a Hollywood publicist and vice-chairman of the Internet image-management firm Reputation.com. "They can be great for employee morale or they can drag it down."

Early signs suggest Google's gamble may pay off. The website Marketingland.com said the film was "a fun movie, but also a beautiful Google commercial".

Inspiration from '60 Minutes'

Shawn Levy, director of "The Internship", said Vaughn came up with the premise for the film after seeing a "60 Minutes" special that portrayed Google as one of the best places in the world to work.

Vaughn arranged a lunch with Wilson and a group of "Googlers" at the company's Mountain View campus, and sought the company's participation. Google eventually agreed, and vice president of marketing Lorraine Twohill oversaw the project.

The company did not make Brin or Twohill available for comment. CEO Larry Page said at a recent conference that Google agreed to collaborate partly because executives felt they did not have much choice, but also to promote science and technology.

"The reason why we got involved in that is that computer science has a marketing problem. We're the nerdy curmudgeons," Page said at the Google IO conference.

Google insisted on creative control over how the film portrayed its products, Levy said. Such agreements are fairly common when auto makers and other companies strike deals for their products to appear in movies.

The company was closely involved in assuring authenticity when production shifted to Georgia Tech, where the film crew built a reproduction of Google's campus, right down to the slides that employees use in the lobby of its buildings and the "nap pods" where they can rest during the day.

Levy said the company's input was limited to technical issues rather than plot.

Accurately or not, the film cheerfully plays into geek stereotypes. Overweight, slovenly nerds appear in many scenes. Interns are shown wearing hats with propeller blades that are painted in Google's signature red, blue and gold colours, modelled on the ones that Google employees and interns wear on their first day at work.

Teams of interns compete against one another in a game based on Quidditch, an invention of the "Harry Potter" books that's a favourite with computer programmers. Predictably, many of the interns are less than adept at running or catching a ball.

Google executives may have cringed at some scenes, such as one in which interns get drunk at a strip club.

Google complained about the portrayal of the intern group's training officer, who the company thought was mean-spirited and decidedly not "Googley", said Levy. By the film's conclusion, the trainer abruptly becomes warm and cuddly — an evolution that Levy says was not in the original script, but which he denies was done to appease Google.

The producers let Google executives watch an early cut of the film, three months ahead of time, and were prepared for "notes" — Hollywoodspeak for corrections — that Levy said never came.

"It was a nerve-racking moment," he recalled. "The final movie was definitely different than the screenplay Google had read. I was pleased that their desire for a satisfying movie trumped any kind of preciousness about their company and culture."

Google had little choice but to cooperate, said Ruben Igielko-Herrlich, whose Propaganda GEM product placement firm finds roles in movies for clients that include BMW, Nokia and Lacoste.

"The movie would get made with or without a company's input," said Igielko-Herrlich. "You have to embrace the production if you hope to soften whatever bad things they might have in there." — Reuters

When stressed, people lean on habits, good or bad

Posted: 29 May 2013 08:23 AM PDT

May 29, 2013

A new study finds that not everyone turns to unhealthy eating when under pressure. –shutterstock.comLOS ANGELES, May 29 – Old habits really do die hard, especially when we're under pressure. But a new study finds that while people fall back on established routines when stressed, this includes healthy habits as well.

While common belief dictates that stress can trigger overeating or shopping sprees, that's not necessarily the case, according to new research. Turns out we're just as likely to default to positive habits, such as eating a healthy breakfast or going to the gym, as we are to self-sabotage.

Lack of control doesn't automatically mean indulgence or hedonism – it's the underlying routine that matters, for better or worse, the researchers said.

In a study to be published in the June issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Wendy Wood and David Neal of the University of Southern California looked at the behaviours of 65 students over a 10-week term.

They found that during testing periods, when students were stressed and sleep-deprived, they were even more likely to stick to old habits since they didn't have the energy to do something new, Wood said. Students who ate unhealthy breakfasts during the semester – such as pastries or doughnuts – ate even more of the junk food during exams.

But the same was true of the "oatmeal eaters" – those in the habit of eating a healthy breakfast were also more likely to stick to routine and ate especially well in the morning when under pressure.

Similarly, students who had a habit of reading the editorial pages in the newspaper every day during the semester were more likely to perform this habit during exams – even when they were limited in time. And regular gym-goers were even more likely to go to the gym when stressed.

"You might expect that, when students were stressed and had little time, they wouldn't read the paper at all, but instead they fell back on their reading habits," Wood said. "Habits don't require much willpower and thought and deliberation."

"So, the central question for behaviour change efforts should be, how can you form healthy, productive habits?" she asked.

"What we know about habit formation is that you want to make the behaviour easy to perform, so that people repeat it often and it becomes part of their daily routine." – AFP/Relaxnews

Colorado governor signs recreational marijuana regulations into law

DENVER, May 29 — Governor John Hickenlooper yesterday signed into law measures to regulate the recreational use of marijuana in Colorado, including blood-level limits for motorists and setting up a voter referendum to impose a tax on the non-medical sale of cannabis.

Colorado House of Representatives Assistant Majority Leader Dan Pabon said the legislation reflected the "will of the voters" who charged lawmakers with setting up the regulatory system after approving legalisation in a vote last November.

One of the bills signed by Hickenlooper calls for a referendum in November on setting a 15 per cent excise tax and an additional 10 per cent sales tax on marijuana sales.

Other measures included in the legislative package are setting blood limits for driving while under the influence of marijuana at 5 nanograms per milliter, and limiting purchases of marijuana to non-Colorado residents at one-quarter of an ounce.

"The laws ... signed today put the health and safety of our kids front and center," said Pabon, a Democrat.

"They drive a stake into the heart of a large black market while creating a regulated, legitimate industry."

House Republican leader Mark Waller, who sponsored the driving-under-the-influence legislation, said Colorado is in "new and foreign territory" in implementing its marijuana laws and it was vital to add a public safety component.

"Equipping law enforcement with the tools they need to ensure people make safe decisions behind the wheel is critical to maximising public safety," he said.

Voters in Washington state also approved legalising recreational marijuana use last November.

Mason Tvert, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, which ran the campaign for the Colorado pot legalisation ballot initiative, said it is "only a matter of time" before other states follow the lead of Colorado and Washington.

He said Colorado's retail marijuana stores were expected to open in early 2014.

Colorado and Washington are among nearly 20 states and the District of Columbia that allow the use of medical marijuana.

The federal government still lists it as a dangerous narcotic and it remains illegal under federal law to take the drug for any purpose.

After the Colorado legislature passed the bills, a spokesman for the US Attorney's Office in Denver said the Justice Department was considering what its response will be to the marijuana legalisation movement.

In Washington state, the Liquor Control Board is required to establish regulations for the state's recreational marijuana industry.

Earlier this month, the agency released a set of draft rules that said marijuana must be grown indoors and tested for contaminants and potency.

Licenses to grow, process and sell the drug would each cost US$1,000 (RM3,055) per year on top of a US$250 application fee under the proposed guidelines. – Reuters

Pertama kali MCA tiada dalam Kabinet

Posted: 28 May 2013 04:14 PM PDT

May 29, 2013

29 MEI ― Sejak Kabinet kerajaan sendiri Persekutuan Tanah Melayu tahun 1955 yang dipimpin Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra hinggalah 5 Mei 2013 hari PRU 13 lalu MCA.

Peluang bermaruah hanya memenangi PRU 14 lima tahun lagi.

Tragedi media Melayu

Posted: 28 May 2013 04:10 PM PDT

May 29, 2013

Zairil is a chocolate purveyor-turned-politician. He finds both experiences bittersweet.

Posted: 29 May 2013 02:52 AM PDT

May 29, 2013

— Bernama

Posted: 29 May 2013 02:36 AM PDT
