Estonians brace for Christmas blood-sausage binge

TALLINN, Dec 22 — As Christmas looms, residents of the Baltic state of Estonia are bracing to wolf down tonnes of blood sausage, a staple of their holiday table.

Trade data in the European Union nation of 1.3 million show that at least 600 tonnes of the pork-based delicacy are consumed in the Christmas period, or around half a kilo per person.

"We expect to sell around 300 tonnes, or around 40 percent of our annual blood sausage production," Triin Looke, marketing director of the Rakvere meat company, told AFP.

"We have five blood sausage types with different tastes and both in pig and sheep guts. This year we also introduced new type of blood sausage — with pumpkin and pumpkin seeds," she added.

For many rural Estonian families not only eating but also making blood sausage is a Christmas tradition, meaning the actual consumption is likely to be even higher.

"I learned how to make blood sausage from my grandmother and now we're teaching the younger generation how to make it. This year we have had special course at the local cultural centre," said Siina Taal, 72. Making the delicacy is not for the squeamish, however.

"It takes at least a day, the guts of a pig, a litre or a little more of pig blood, meat, pepper, salt, onion," said Taal. Mixed with a grain porridge, that's enough to produce 10 kilos of sausage.

"The first thing is to clean the guts and start making porridge, which takes several hours, usually seven or even more," she explained. "The blood's added at the very end when the porridge is cold enough to be handled. We also add meat and different spices to porridge — every family has its own version.

When the mix is cooled down, the filling of the guts starts." Finally, the sausages are boiled for 15 minutes and are ready to be baked or fried.

"Eating blood sausage is a must in Estonia at Christmas," Taal said. — Afp-Relaxnews

An old favourite, all sparkly and glammed up!

The restaurant is a sparkly, glittery gem... breathtaking

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 22 — It was the restaurant where I had my first taste of toro, that exquisite fatty tuna belly; where I had dinner in a private room while the chef sang a Japanese song; where its Sunday buffet lunch was the stuff of legends and used to need a month's advance booking. That was Kampachi at the Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur.

When it closed its doors in March this year, with the hotel slated for demolition and rebuilding, it was greatly missed. Though there is already a Kampachi at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, it was not the same, as it features a more open concept.

Now there is the newly-opened Kampachi at The Troika which is breathtaking from every angle; lights dripping from the magnificent high ceiling and the dramatic backdrop of a Kyoto temple. It's beautiful and elegant. Even the sushi counter draws attention with the textured wooden wall that glows amber in the lighting.

Even the sushi counter looks great in this chic restaurant.

There is an even more dazzling view of the main restaurant when you look down from the upper level where finishing touches are being made to the teppanyaki counter. The whole décor oozes New York chic.

Little wonder then that Kampachi at Troika has been drawing a crowd since it opened on December 10. Executive chef How Yoke Seng is an old familiar face and he holds court here, explaining to us each course of the menu for dinner we were having.

First was the Simmered Eel with Japanese Pepper Sauce, tender and sweet in an intense sauce.

Akagai or red clam in the sashimi platter.

Then I clapped eyes on the toro, thick and pink with marbling, having the pride of place on the Sashimi Okonomi, the chef's selection of raw fish, together with akagai or red clam, scallops, shrimps and squid. It's a feast of the freshest seafood flown in directly from the Tsukiji market in Tokyo.

You can tell from the firm bite of the toro, velvety and exquisite in your mouth. Or the sweetest slivers of akagai that didn't really need any sauce or condiment. It was a sumptuous sashimi platter.

Toro in the sashimi platter... absolute indulgence.

We had a choice of two types of soy sauce for this — a low salt and normal one. I thought the low salt sauce was slightly sweet.

The Ogon Anago Shirayaki or Grilled Deep Sea Conger Pike with Salt was unforgettable. The most delicious aroma trailed the conger pike as it was brought to the table and it had been grilled, just touched with salt.

The pike or eel was firm yet springy to the bite, and lusciously sweet. It was accompanied by sudachi, a Japanese lime. A drop of this very fragrant lime juice, and it perked up the taste of the pike.

Ogon Anago Shirayaki or Deep Sea Conger Pike with Salt.

The Fugu Kara Age or deepfried marinated puffer fish from the Yamaguchi Prefecture, lost out to the conger pike in taste and texture. The perfectly fried fish was a little tough but it got a flavourful lift when eaten with the plump green chillies.

Gyuniku Enoki Maki is a Kampachi signature dish. It's beef rolled with enoki mushrooms and grilled teppanyaki style. The tender beef roll is laced with the juices of the mushrooms. Two sauces were presented with this — ponzu, and a truffle sauce. I liked it with the ponzu.

Chef How worked his magic at the table, with the Ishiyaki Uni Meshi — hot stone pot fried rice with sea urchin, shimeji mushroom, anchovies, flying fish roe, vegetables and egg. He was swift and deft, frying the rice in the super hot stone bowl, adding each of the ingredients. "You have to fry it for five to 10 minutes," said the chef, as he added in the flying fish roe, and then folding in gently the delicate sea urchin at the last.

A special sauce of soya, mirin and bonito had been used in the fried rice. I was totally bowled over by the scrumptious rice that was sticky and sweet, with sparkly bursts of roe contrasting with the creamy, custard-like sea urchin.

The divine Japanese melon.

To end, we had the Japanese rock melon which is always a treat with its impossibly sweet juices, marshmallowy texture and fragrance. It's all you can do to prevent the juices running down your chin. It is so, so good! It's the best and most expensive during winter, at RM75 a slice.

The superb conger pike or anago is also winter bounty.

The cost of our dinner was RM320 per head, but it's worth it for the amazing and fresh ingredients, and the dining experience.

Kampachi is located on the ground floor of The Troika in Jalan Binjai, Kuala Lumpur, Tel: 03-2275 7846.

Ferrari prefer Vettel to Hamilton

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 07:48 AM PST

MARANELLO, Dec 21 — Triple Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel would be Ferrari's first choice should they ever need to replace Fernando Alonso, president Luca di Montezemolo has said.

The Red Bull driver has been repeatedly linked to Ferrari this season, with talk of a pre-contract for 2014, although the 25-year-old German and his team have tried to put the speculation to rest.

Speaking at Ferrari's Maranello factory before the Christmas break, Montezemolo left no doubt about the Italian team's admiration for Vettel.

"If for whatever reason Fernando Alonso were to leave one day, maybe because he wants to retire in Hawaii with his girlfriend, then I want Vettel," the Gazzetta dello Sport quoted him as telling German media.

"Sebastian is a potential Ferrari driver for the future."

Whether Vettel and Alonso ever pair up at Ferrari remains to be seen, however, with Montezemolo previously saying he did not want to have "two roosters in the same hen house" but rather two drivers "who race for Ferrari and not for themselves."

Montezemolo said Alonso, Vettel and Lewis Hamilton were clearly a cut above the rest in Formula One and he preferred the Red Bull driver to the Briton "because he's younger and hasn't been around so many teams".

Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, will be racing for Mercedes next year after six years with McLaren — the team who have backed him since he was in go-karts. He will be 28 in January.

Vettel is now on his third F1 team, having made his debut for BMW-Sauber and then raced for Toro Rosso before joining sister team Red Bull.

In a separate interview with Britain's Sky Sports television, Montezemolo sounded more positive about Hamilton.

"Alonso is in Ferrari. If tomorrow, and I would be very unhappy with this, he will decide to go to live in the moon then for sure Hamilton is a driver that I like very much," he said.

Double world champion Alonso, 31, has a contract with Ferrari until at least the end of 2016. He won his two titles with Renault, after starting out with Minardi, and was Hamilton's teammate at McLaren in 2007.

"I'm immensely pleased with Alonso. He's more than a driver, he's a key figure. He fits into the way the team work perfectly," said Montezemolo of the Spaniard who finished runner-up to Vettel this year. — Reuters

Mancini still surprised by Man City’s rise

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. — Reuters pic

LONDON, Dec 21 — When Roberto Mancini was named Manchester City manager three years ago even the most optimistic of the club's supporters would have struggled to believe that Manchester United could be knocked off their pedestal so quickly.

Decades of disappointment and false dawns meant the key to the City trophy cabinet had been redundant since a 1976 League Cup triumph, after which a succession of managers tried and failed to drag them out of United's shadow.

Even the "golden ticket" of an Abu Dhabi United Group takeover in 2008 failed to convince some of better times ahead and Welshman Mark Hughes, the first manager tasked with moulding the world's top talent into a title-winning side, was shown the door after an unspectacular start to the season.

The charismatic Mancini endeared himself immediately to the fans by sporting a blue and white scarf on the touchline but even he admits he is surprised by what has followed.

"When I arrived here three years ago I didn't think that maybe we would win in two years the FA Cup and the Premier League," Mancini told reporters today.

"I thought maybe we would need four or five years to win the Premier League because it's not easy to change things in England because for 20 or 30 years Manchester United won everything and we've changed this situation.

"That's not to say we didn't make some mistakes because that's normal. And we need to work harder to improve."

Bottom club Reading visit the Etihad Stadium tomorrow, almost three years to the day that Mancini took over, with City locked in a dogfight with United as they seek to retain the Premier League title they clawed away from their rivals in May.

While a second successive Champions League flop has been a major disappointment, City's defence of their English crown has so far been tenacious, even if they trail United by six points heading into a four-game holiday programme.

Mancini offered up Champagne to reporters at the club's training ground today, a stylish touch at the onset of the holiday season. But behind the smile there is clearly substance.

The Italian, who steered the club to the FA Cup in his first full season in charge and third-place in the Premier League, has coped admirably with a dressing room full of millionaires, instilling a team ethic despite high-profile bust-ups with the likes of Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli.

For a club always associated with wildly fluctuating fortunes, tears and moments of hope, Mancini's reign has been almost boringly efficient.

Until a 3-2 defeat by United, City had gone 37 home games in the Premier League undefeated. Yet they responded to that disappointment with a 3-1 victory away to Newcastle United and Reading should be put to the sword tomorrow.

Mancini boasts 70 wins from 114 Premier League matches and only once have City suffered back-to-back defeats with him at the helm and that was more than two years ago.

If United are to reclaim their title at the end of the season they know they will have to earn it the hard way as Mancini's City battle-hardened side will not be handing it over without a scrap. — Reuters

Men with more brothers found to have faster sperm

Men with more brothers than sisters may have enhanced fertility, a new study suggests. — AFP pic

SHEFFIELD, Dec 21 — A new study suggests that the more brothers a man has, the faster his sperm swim, meaning greater fertility.

Scientists from the University of Sheffield in the UK and Brown University in the US assessed the fertility of 500 men, and found that sperm swimming speed correlated with family makeup.

The findings, published in the Asian Journal of Andrology, supports the theory that men with strong fertility are more likely to father boys.

"We found the greater number of brothers rather than sisters a man has, the faster his sperm is, increasing the likelihood of fertility," says Dr Allan Pacey, one of the researchers. "Lots of brothers is also an indication that the man's parents have strong male fertility genes, and they would then be passed on to the son."

Still, men with a lot of sisters needn't worry, and the scientists also didn't measure whether women with sisters were linked to enhanced fertility.

"This is certainly not a smoking gun as a reason for infertility in men," said Dr. Jim Mossman, study leader and postdoctoral researcher at Brown University, according to the UK's Daily Mail on Wednesday. "However, it would be interesting to test whether the same relationships are observed in other human populations as well as in other species. Likewise, would we observe similar associations when looking at female fertility?" — AFP/Relaxnews

Long-lived bats offer clues on diseases, aging

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 07:13 AM PST

A study finds that their highly evolved genes which give bats their superior immune system also enable them to fly. — AFP pic

HONG KONG, Dec 21 — The bat, a reservoir for viruses like Ebola, SARS and Nipah, has for decades stumped scientists trying to figure out how it is immune to many deadly bugs but a recent study into its genes may finally shed some light, scientists said today.

Studying the DNA of two distant bat species, the scientists discovered how genes dealing with the bats' immune system had undergone the most rapid change.

This may explain why they are relatively free of disease and live exceptionally long lives compared with other mammals of similar size, such as the rat, said Professor Lin-Fa Wang, an infectious disease expert at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School in Singapore who led the multi-centre study.

"We are not saying bats never get sick or never get infections. What we are saying is they handle infections a lot better," Wang said in a telephone interview.

What was missing from both species of bats was a gene segment known to trigger extreme, and potentially fatal, immune reactions to infections, called the cytokine storm.

Cytokine storms end up killing not only offending viruses in the body, but the host's own cells and tissues too.

"Viruses rarely kill the host. The killing comes from the host's immune response. So it looks like what bats are doing is depress the inflammation (cytokine storm). If we can learn that, we can design drugs to minimise the inflammation damage and control viral infection," Wang said.

The study, which saw the participation of researchers from China, Denmark, Australia and the United States, was published today in the journal Science.

Compared with other mammals of similar size, bats live a long time, with lifespans of between 20 and 40 years. Rats live between 2 and 3 years, on average.

IMMUNE GENES LINKED TO FLIGHT

Interestingly, Wang and his colleagues found that the highly evolved genes that give bats their superior immune system also enable them to fly.

Out of more than 5,000 types of mammals on the planet, bats are the only one capable of sustained flight and some species can fly more than 1,000 km in a single night.

Such intense physical exertion is known to produce toxic "free radicals" that cause tissue damage and it is these same genes that give the bat the ability to repair itself, Wang said.

"What we found was the genes that evolved fastest were genes involved in repairing DNA damage. That makes sense ... because when you fly, metabolism goes up and it generates free radicals that are toxic to cells," Wang said.

"Because bats fly, they (would have had) to evolve and adapt ... to get genes that can repair DNA damage."

Wang said we have much to learn from the bat, which has evolved to avoid disease and live exceptionally long lives.

"Cancer, ageing and infectious disease, these are the three major areas of concern for people," he said.

"We have studied rats for 150 years to understand how to do better in these three areas. Now we have a system, the bat, that has done very well in evolution. We can learn from the bat. With modern techniques, we can design new drugs to slow down the ageing process, treat cancer, fight infections." — Reuters

Moroccan road film subverts Hollywood stereotypes

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 07:16 AM PST

DUBAI, Dec 21 — When director John Slattery first visited Morocco, the familiarity was jarring — and as removed from the images of an exotic Orient conjured up by Hollywood as possible.

That dichotomy between the representation and the reality of Morocco drives Slattery's charming paean to a country he clearly loves, and makes "Casablanca, Mon Amour" a thoughtful rejoinder to US popular culture.

Two young Moroccans spend three weeks travelling their native country, filming what they see on a digital camera while passing by studios and locations that have formed the backdrop for many Hollywood blockbusters, an industry Morocco has cultivated.

The film is spliced with shots of endearingly bemused or nervous ordinary people giving their thoughts to the camera about Hollywood and its global stars, as well as clips from classics such as "Casablanca" featuring off-the-cuff anti-Arab slurs such as "you can't trust them", and "they all look alike".

"We had the idea of going on this trip and to be this stupid American film crew going to make this traditional movie using Morocco, but we wanted to subvert that," Slattery said after a screening at the Dubai international film festival this week.

"There was not really a script but the trip was their trip and so wherever they went we followed them. So that way they were really directing the film."

Shot by Hassan, who narrates the road trip in French, the images shift from scenes of daily life caught on camera, to his comically testy relationship with his travelling companion Abdel, to a troupe they stumble upon in Meknes that plays traditional Moroccan "malhoun" music.

Hassan, a real-life film school student at the time, is using the road trip for a class project, while Abdel wants to visit a dying uncle on the other side of the country.

Slattery includes footage from Moroccan television from the Marrakech film festival in which comic actor Bashar Skeirej declares that "a country without its own art will never have a history".

It's a subtle suggestion that the government should do more to promote domestic film rather than just rent out landscapes for Hollywood misrepresentation.

Morocco has formed the backdrop for a fictionalised Orient in "Ishtar", doubled as Abu Dhabi in the "Sex in the City 2" and been various distant planets in Star Wars films.

"National cinemas in many countries are being destroyed or have been destroyed because of this massive power of marketing that is Hollywood," said Slattery, a California-based American of Irish origin. "They destroy little films, they destroy the possibility for little stories."

The film, a labour of love that took Slattery seven years to complete, borrows from the book "Reel Bad Arabs", author Jack Shaheen's study of Hollywood's anti-Arab stereotypes. Its title references Alain Resnais's 1959 French New Wave classic "Hiroshima, Mon Amour".

"(When) I would say 'Morocco', people would say 'were you scared', or a polite 'what was that like?'," Slattery said, recounting reactions in the United States when he would talk about his first experiences as a peace corps volunteer.

"There was that whole category of fear in the responses, or 'Morocco, you must have seen Lawrence of Arabia', or 'Blackhawk Down'! — all these film titles. That stuck with me, this fear and movies were the two references for Morocco."

Yet Slattery's first day in the North African country could not have been more mundane, he said.

A colleague whisked him off to a rural home near Rabat where he met farmers who reminded him of Ireland.

"This guy opens (his door) in a tweed jacket that was all torn up. This is how these old farmers dress in Ireland, and his hands were all calloused and dirty. It just felt very familiar to me," Slattery said.

"His grandmother had a television hooked up to a car battery for electricity. I spent the weekend there, hanging out with these people, cutting hay and stuff, and I just thought 'this is Ireland'." — Reuters

Comedienne Rebel Wilson to host MTV Movie Awards

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 10:17 PM PST

LOS ANGELES, Dec 21 – "Pitch Perfect" star Rebel Wilson will host the 2013 MTV Movie Awards and give a new drama-infused spin to the annual ceremony, the cable television channel said on Thursday.

Wilson, 28, will play host and star by acting in a satirical narrative throughout the April 14 awards show in Los Angeles.

The Australian comedienne who appeared in the 2011 comedy hit "Bridesmaids", gave a sneak peak of the show in a promotional trailer in which she plays a stone-faced hostage hiding a candy bar in her mouth for a necessary snack.

The trailer hints at a possible role for Wilson's real-life roommate, British actor Matt Lucas, who plays Wilson's captor.

The MTV Movie Awards offer a zany take on Hollywood's usual buttoned-up, black tuxedo and gown awards season.

MTV hands out golden popcorn-shaped trophies in categories such as "best kiss" and "best fight." The awards categories pay respect to blockbuster hits likely to be overlooked by industry stalwarts the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Previous hosts include Lindsay Lohan, Mike Myers and Jimmy Fallon. – Reuters

Italy PM Monti resignation expected today

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 08:25 AM PST

ROME, Dec 21 — Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti will hand in his resignation to the president after parliament approves the 2013 budget later today, opening the way to an election expected in February, political and government sources said.

The former European commissioner, appointed to lead an unelected government to save Italy from financial crisis a year ago, has kept his own political plans a closely guarded secret but he has faced growing pressure to seek a second term.

Prime Minister Monti: To reveal his plans for the future on Sunday. — Reuters pic

European leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso have called for his economic reform agenda to continue but Italy's two main parties have said he should stay out of the race.

Ordinary Italians, weary of repeated tax hikes and spending cuts, appear less convinced and opinion polls show little sign that voters are ready to give Monti a second term, with a survey this week showing 61 per cent saying he should not stand.

Whether or not Monti runs, he is expected to overshadow an election that will be fought out over the painful measures he has introduced to try to rein in Italy's huge public debt and revive its stagnant economy.

The lower house passed a confidence motion on the budget and is expected to give final approval at around 6 p.m. (1700 GMT), wrapping up its last piece of business before President Georgio Napolitano dissolves parliament and sends Italians to the polls, probably on February 24.

Monti will make a statement to his cabinet at 7 p.m. and is expected to tender his resignation to Napolitano immediately afterwards.

The widely anticipated move comes after Monti's technocrat government lost the support of Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom (PDL) party in parliament earlier this month.

Monti is due to hold a news conference on Sunday at which he is expected to outline his intentions. These could include standing as a candidate in the election or endorsing a centrist alliance committed to his reform agenda.

The centre-left Democratic Party (PD) has held a strong lead in the polls for months but a centrist alliance led by Monti could gain enough support in the Senate to force the PD to seek a coalition deal that could help shape the economic agenda.

Berlusconi in wings

Senior figures from the alliance, including both the UDC party, which is close to the Catholic Church, and a new group founded by Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo have been hoping to gain Monti's backing.

He has not said clearly whether he intends to run, but he has dropped heavy hints that he will continue to push a reform agenda that has the backing of both Italy's business community and its European partners.

The PD has promised to stick to the deficit reduction targets Monti has agreed with the European Union and says it will maintain the broad course he has set while putting more emphasis on reviving growth.

Berlusconi's return to the political front line has however added to the already considerable uncertainty about the centre-right's intentions and increased the likelihood of a messy and potentially bitter election campaign.

The billionaire tycoon has fluctuated between attacking the government's "Germano-centric" austerity policies and promising to stand aside if Monti will agree to lead the centre right, but now appears to have settled on an anti-Monti line.

He has pledged to cut taxes and scrap the hated IMU housing tax that Monti imposed. He has also sounded a stridently anti-German line that has at times echoed the tone of the populist 5-Star Movement headed by maverick comic Beppe Grillo.

Both the PD and the PDL, both of which supported Monti's technocrat government in parliament, have made it clear they would not be happy if he ran against them and there have been foretastes of the kind of attacks he can expect.

Former centre-left prime minister Massimo D'Alema said in an interview last week that it would be "morally questionable" for Monti to run against the PD, which backed all of his reforms and which has pledged to maintain his pledges to European partners.

Berlusconi, who has mounted an intensive media campaign in the past few days, echoed that criticism this week, saying Monti risked losing the credibility he had won over the past year and becoming a "little political figure". — Reuters

EU, Russia condemn Israeli settlement expansion plans

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 08:12 AM PST

BRUSSELS, Dec 21 — The European Union and Russia today denounced Israel's plans to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank and urged Israelis and Palestinians to take "bold and concrete steps towards peace".

Israeli officials said this week they would press on with plans to build 6,000 homes for settlers on land claimed by Palestinians, defying criticism from Western powers who fear the move will damage already faint hopes for a peace accord.

"The European Union and the Russian Federation are deeply dismayed by and strongly oppose Israeli plans to expand settlements in the West Bank and in particular plans to develop the E1 area," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said in a statement.

E1 is a wedge of land between East Jerusalem and the West Bank where Israel had previously held off under US pressure.

"The EU and the Russian Federation underline the urgency of renewed, structured and substantial peace efforts in 2013," said the joint statement after an EU-Russia summit in Brussels.

Stung by de facto recognition of Palestinian sovereignty by the UN General Assembly last month, Israel announced it would expand settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Most countries deem the settlements illegal and have been especially troubled by Israel's declared intent to build in E1.

The EU and Russia, which together with the United States and the United Nations make up the Quartet of Middle East mediators, said the settlements were illegal under international law and were an obstacle to peace.

"The EU and the Russian Federation will not recognise any changes to the pre-1967 borders, including with regard to Jerusalem, other than those agreed by the parties," they said.

It was time to take "bold and concrete steps towards peace between Palestinians and Israelis", they said, calling for "direct and substantial negotiations without preconditions".

The EU and Russia called for the unconditional opening of crossings for the flow of goods and people to and from the Gaza Strip, and urged Israel to avoid any step that would undermine the financial situation of the Palestinian Authority.

They urged the Palestinian leadership to use Palestine's new UN status constructively and avoid steps that would deepen lack of trust and lead further away from a negotiated solution. — Reuters

MTUC cadang guna sistem ‘G to G’ untuk pekerja asing

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 03:16 AM PST

Julia Perez mohon maaf selepas kritik drama Malaysia

Posted: 21 Dec 2012 01:56 AM PST

Indonesia kita jauuh majuuu... kita mahuu sekaliii... bangga jadi orang Indonesia."

DEC 21 — I'm very religious in my own opinion. However, there are many people — some I know and even those I don't — who might not agree.

But these are the same people who send me anonymous e-mails praying that my daughter grows up practising beastiality.

I'm sure they are all very religious and have paid their downpayment for a nice condo in heaven for after the rapture.

But that's not what I want to write about today. No. What I want to write about is much more important.

I would like to congratulate my Malaysian Christian brothers and sisters over our government's decision to relax the rules and regulations to visit the holy land in Israel.

It's a good move by the government as it shows that it is sensitive to the needs of the people and is willing to overlook certain political issues.

But this makes me slightly bitter. Don't get me wrong. I'm not calling for the new regulations for Christians to be revoked. I am sincerely happy for them.

And as most people are very much aware, most of these Christian holy sites in the holy land are also Muslim holy sites. We are brothers and sisters after all.

So let me tell you why I'm bitter. Let me ask you this. Why am I, and all the other Malaysian Muslims, not allowed to visit them?

As a Muslim, I have made it a point to study and observe my own religion. And part of that is to travel and see for myself the cradle of where my religion was "born".

I have been to Mount Nebo in Jordan where Nabi Musa was shown the Promised Land by God. I looked out over the cliffs and saw the view he had seen.

I have been to the banks of the River Jordan where Nabi Yahya baptised Nabi Isa right by the border with Israel.

I have swum in the Dead Sea, which used to be Nabi Lut's home, before God decided to punish them for their sins.

I have prayed at the Umayyad Mosque in Syria where Nabi Muhammad's children and grandchildren were killed in the Battle of Karbala.

In Egypt, I have looked into the hollow eyes of Ramsses II who battled Nabi Musa trying to convince him he was god.

Every single experience I had left me in awe and made me even more curious and interested in Islam.

I didn't feel like aligning myself with the oppressive Assad regime when I was in Syria.

I didn't pledge to destroy democracy and join the knights of King Heshemite in Jordan.

And neither did I chant for the return of Hosni Mubarak and throw rocks at his opposition in Egypt's Tahrir Square.

So I really wish to be able to visit Jerusalem which was the first kiblat for Muslims to pray towards before the Kaabah in Mecca.

How thrilling it would be if I could enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or Baitulmaqdis (Dome of the Rock), where Nabi Muhammad ascended to heaven.

I would love to visit Mount Zion and pay my respects at the Tomb of David, or the burial ground of Nabi Daud, the great king of Israel.

So, government of Malaysia, don't insult Malaysian Muslims by doubting our intelligence and faith.

We can differentiate between the Zionist movement and the everyday Jews in Israel.

We are also confident enough in our faith in Islam that we won't be swayed just because we are in Yahudi territory.

I'm not asking for Malaysia to suddenly have diplomatic ties with Israel. We still need to put pressure on them.

I'm not naive and I do understand the pressure of politics. But I say, we can put that all aside when it comes to religion and spirituality.

We are all same. David and Daud is the same. Moses and Musa is the same. John and Yahya is the same. Jesus and Isa is the same.

I want to have the right to visit the holy sites. But in the meantime, I have a request for my Malaysian Christian brothers and sisters.

Don't forget to send me a postcard when you are there. Sign off with "Wish you were here!" just to rub it in.

Indonesia: Tanah Surga… Katanya

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 03:47 PM PST

21 DIS — Bukan lautan hanya kolam susu... katanya

Tiada badai tiada topan kau temui... katanya

Since we started this airline. 94 per cent. And our new domestic routes in Indonesia making great progress. We making good profits in Indonesia."
