Chefs review the best – and worst – food critics in the US

In a rare but golden opportunity, editors of a popular food blog have turned the tables on some of the most powerful food critics in the US and allowed chefs around the country to rate their favourite — and most despised — writers.

For the second year in a row, the title of most popular and respected US food writer in The Daily Meal's chef survey went to Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, who was likewise voted as having the best culinary knowledge and prose and is described by chef respondents as "perhaps the best of them all" and "one of a kind."

Before becoming a food critic, Gold wrote about "death metal and gangsta rap" for Rolling Stone and Spin magazines, and he was also the first food writer to win a 2007 Pulitzer Prize in the art of criticism.

He's also the most likeable of food critics and was voted the one writer chefs would most likely want to share a meal with.

The lone category where he failed to take the top spot was for a critic's "perceived integrity", which Daily Meal editor Arthur Bovino defines as a critic who writes objectively "and can be trusted not to be getting his or her wedding catered for free".

They refrain from accepting free meals or bottles of wine and they don't try to wield their power.

In that category, Gold drops to fourth place and is replaced by the San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Bauer.

For the survey chefs were polled anonymously but Daily Meal editors reassure readers that respondents are all "elite industry figures and most are household names".

While chefs hold Gold in high favour for his writing chops and culinary prowess, the writers who are generally disliked among the captains of the industry include Brad A. Johnson of the Orange County Register – described as the dullest writer – and the New York Post's Steve Cuozzo. The two garnered the lowest overall scores across most categories. – AFP Relaxnews, September 22, 2013.

Swiss chocolate maker wins health claim approval on blood flow

Next time someone chides you for indulging in a piece of dark chocolate, point to your heart or your leg and let them know it's good for blood flow.

That's the latest argument chocoholics can use to justify their sweet indulgence after the European Commission gave premium Swiss chocolate maker Barry Callebaut its blessing to use the health claim that cocoa flavanols can "help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood flow".

The luxury chocolate maker becomes the first in the industry to be able to make such health claims.

The approval was based on evidence presented by the Swiss chocolate maker using the brand's Acticoa cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Scientists were able to prove that a daily intake of 200 mg of cocoa flavanols helps maintain healthy blood flow.

The chocolate maker will now be able to put the health claim on its Acticoa cocoa and chocolate products within EU countries.

After heart health, the functional food industry — foods that make health claims — has been eyeing healthy blood flow as the next big trend.

A concentrated tomato extract FruitFlow claims to improve blood circulation by inhibiting platelets from clumping and aggregating, a known cause of heart attacks, stroke and venous thrombosis. – AFP Relaxnews, September 22, 2013.

Critics divided on Orlando Bloom’s Broadway debut as Romeo

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 12:36 AM PDT

Latest Update: September 21, 2013 03:53 pm

British actor Orlando Bloom (pic) scored mixed reviews on Friday for his Broadway debut in a modern-day, interracial remake of "Romeo and Juliet," William Shakespeare's classic tale of doomed, young lovers.

Bloom, the star of Hollywood blockbusters "Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean," plays Romeo opposite Tony-nominated stage actress Condola Rashad in the David Leveaux production that opened on Thursday.

The New York Times praised Bloom for a "first-rate debut" but other critics were less enthusiastic, saying he lacked stage presence.

"For once, we have a Romeo who evolves substantively, from a posturing youth in love with love to a man who discovers the startling revelation of real love, with a last-act descent into bilious, bitter anger that verges on madness," the New York Times said.

The newspaper was equally approving of 26-year-old Rashad's performance, describing it as "incandescent with virginity."

"You see why Romeo, who's been around and packs a knife, would fall hard for a girl who is so palpably untarnished," it added.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that at 36, Bloom should be too old to play Romeo, but it said that his boyish good looks and classical training served him well in the role.

"Looking lean and athletic in a torso-hugging white Henley, ripped jeans and cherry-red Doc Martens, Bloom gives his screen fans plenty to swoon over, including a brief shirtless scene that will set lots of hearts racing," it said.

Although the production packs Hollywood star power and Bloom's performance was fine, the New York Daily News thought the actor did not have what was needed to really pull it off. "No 'Romeo' to Die For," screeched its headline.

"Bloom speaks Shakespeare's poetry capably. But he lacks the gravity to really grab you. Together, he and Rashad are warm, not hot," it added.

A lack of stage presence was also a problem for the New York Post which said Bloom was "game but merely competent - and less than that when he expresses anguish."

Variety said the interracial casting of the feuding Montague and Capulet clans sounds bold, but added it delivered little dramatic impact.

The trade publication also took issue with the play's staging.

"Romeo makes his noisy entrance on a beast of a motorcycle. Juliet delivers a pensive soliloquy from her precarious seat on a swing," Variety said.

"The ones who really suffer from this strange resistance to Shakespeare's lyricism are Bloom and Rashad, who do good work when they're not hanging from a scaffold or scaling a wall, and deserve a better chance."

Bloom is one of several Hollywood stars appearing on Broadway. James Bond actor Daniel Craig and his Oscar-winner wife Rachel Weisz will appear in a revival of Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" next month, Denzel Washington and Diahann Carroll will star in "A Raisin in the Sun" next spring and comedian and actor Billy Crystal will appear on stage in "700 Sundays" later this year. – Reuters, September 21, 2013.

Rockwell, who died in 1978 at age 84, painted nostalgic and amusing scenes of everyday American life over the course of some 65 years.

The paintings, which are expected to fetch upwards of US$24 million (RM76 million) total at the December 4 auction, are being sold by the descendents of Kenneth J. Stuart Sr., Rockwell's friend and the art director at the Saturday Evening Post magazine, which published hundreds of his works on its covers over more than 40 years.

"Saying Grace," voted the favorite cover by readers of the Post after it was published in 1951, shows a Mennonite family praying at a restaurant. It has a pre-sale estimate of up to US$20 million.

"The Gossips" from 1948, in which 15 pairs of people including Rockwell and his wife are depicted talking to each other, could fetch as much as US$9 million.

"To offer any one of these masterworks would be a great privilege. To present two of Norman Rockwell's most iconic works in one auction is unprecedented," Elizabeth Goldberg, the head of Sotheby's American Art department, said in a statement.

Other paintings in the sale are "Walking to Church," with a pre-sale estimate of up to US$5 million, a portrait of former President Dwight Eisenhower called "The Day I Painted Ike," and color studies for "Girl at Mirror," "Norman Rockwell Visits a Country School, and "Breaking Home Ties."

Rockwell's "Breaking Home Ties" sold for US$15.4 million in 2006 at Sotheby's, an auction record for him. – Reuters, September 21, 2013.

Positive outlook in heart disease tied to fewer deaths

Posted: 20 Sep 2013 05:51 PM PDT

September 21, 2013
Latest Update: September 21, 2013 08:54 am

People with heart disease who are more upbeat and excited tend to live longer than those who don't have such a positive outlook, a new study suggests, possibly because they are often more active.

Researchers surveyed people with ischemic heart disease - when the heart doesn't get enough blood due to narrowed arteries - and found earning a high score on measures of "positive affect" was tied to a greater chance of being a regular exerciser and a lower risk of dying over the next five years.

"It adds to the body of literature suggesting that there may be relationships between positive affect … and all-cause mortality," Richard Sloan, who studies psychological risk factors and heart disease at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, said.

But, "It's going to take more than this to be confident that there's a link in the way we're confident there's a link between depression and (a higher risk of) heart disease," Sloan, who didn't participate in the new research, told Reuters Health.

The new study included 607 heart patients who were seen at one Danish hospital.

Susanne S. Pedersen from Tilburg University in The Netherlands and her colleagues asked the patients about their quality of life, mood and lifestyle habits including physical activity in 2005. Then they used death and hospital records to track participants through 2010.

On a mood scale ranging from 0 to 40, where higher scores indicate feeling more relaxed, self-confident and excited, half of participants scored a 24 or above. (Negative affect was measured separately - so a person could score high or low on measures of both positive attitude and insecurity or helplessness.)

During the follow-up period, 30 of the high positive affect patients died of any cause, compared to 50 people with a lower positive attitude score.

Some of that association appeared to be driven by exercise habits, the researchers found. People with high mood scores were more likely than other participants to say they exercised at least once a week, and exercisers were half as likely to die as non-exercisers.

There was not a clear difference, however, in how often people were hospitalized for heart-related conditions, based on their positivity. During the study period, about half of all participants were hospitalized for a heart attack, heart failure or chest pain, for example, according to findings published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes.

The researchers said past studies also found a link between having a positive outlook and better heart health, but it was unclear what explained the association.

"There is some evidence to suggest that even among people who are already ill, who already have heart disease or diabetes or related conditions, that those people who are happier also have better outcomes," Julia Boehm from Chapman University in Orange, California, who has studied psychological wellbeing and heart health, said.

Health behaviors such as exercise are one possible explanation for that link, she told Reuters Health. Some researchers have also proposed another mechanism, suggesting optimism may affect physiologic processes in the body that would ultimately influence heart health, such as inflammation levels.

Pedersen and her colleagues noted that they did not have information on participants' type or intensity of exercise. The researcher also said the study can't say how exercise and positive affect may be linked.

"We do not know what comes first (also known as the 'chicken and egg' problem) and thus cannot make any conclusions about the direction of causality - is it exercise that increases positive affect or positive affect that leads to more exercise with an effect on mortality or both?" Pedersen told Reuters Health in an email.

"Irrespectively, it cements what we already know - namely that exercise is good for the heart."

Boehm, who wasn't involved in the new research, said there isn't enough evidence to tell people with heart disease to be happier or more optimistic in order to improve their outcomes. But she agreed with Pedersen that there are data to support recommending exercise to those people for heart health.

"Hopefully you would have the added benefit of feeling more happy (and) optimistic," she said. – Reuters, September 21, 2013.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” author in dispute with US museum over book’s title

Latest Update: September 21, 2013 09:41 am

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," Harper Lee, is locked in a dispute with a museum in her Alabama hometown over the use of the novel's title.

The 87-year-old author has filed an application seeking a trademark for the book's title when it is displayed on clothing and other merchandise.

The move is being challenged by the Monroe County Heritage Museum, which says it sells T-shirts and souvenirs with the words "To Kill a Mockingbird" to help fund its operations.

The museum, located in Monroeville, Alabama, is dedicated to the novel, widely considered a classic. The museum draws thousands of fans each year and includes an old courthouse that served as a model for the courtroom in the movie version of the novel that starred Gregory Peck.

Arguing against Lee's trademark application, the museum said it did not believe she was entitled to share in the profits from the sale of the merchandise. Museum officials did not immediately return calls for comment.

Robert Clarida, an attorney for Lee, said he believed his client should receive a portion of the proceeds. "Who is going to buy those T-shirts if they don't say 'To Kill a Mockingbird?'" he asked.

The book, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and has sold more than 30 million copies, tells the story of two children of an attorney growing up in a small Southern town.

Their father, who is white, is selected to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman, and the man is convicted despite his innocence.

It is the only novel that Lee ever published.

Earlier this month, Lee agreed to terminate a lawsuit she filed against her former agent that claimed she had been tricked into giving away the copyright to her novel. No details of the agreement were made public. – Reuters, September 21, 2013.

Saya dan Samad Said, sama tetapi berbeza waktu

Posted: 20 Sep 2013 04:32 PM PDT

September 21, 2013

Saya terharu mengikuti berita Sasterawan Negara, A Samad Said dikehendaki polis dan polis dapat dia.

– 21 September, 2013.

Label anak Mahathir bukan jaminan, kata Mukhriz

Posted: 21 Sep 2013 02:24 AM PDT

OLEH MD IZWAN DAN MOHD FARHAN DARWIS
September 21, 2013
Latest Update: September 21, 2013 05:57 pm

"Karier politik saya melalui turun naik.

- 21 September, 2013.
