Claxstone Smooth Blue cheese was deemed the best in the world in England last week.Claxstone Smooth Blue cheese was deemed the best in the world in England last week.A medium-strength blue cheese produced in the heart of rural England has been named the best cheese for 2013 at an international cheese show billed as the largest in the world.

The Claxstone Smooth Blue, produced by Long Clawson Dairy in Leicestershire, England beat out 4,285 other cheeses to be declared the "supreme champion" at the 116th edition of the International Cheese Awards Nantwich last week.

Cheeses were submitted from 27 countries.

The cheesemakers describe their blue as soft, balanced, creamy, and mild. Milk used for the cheese comes from cows that are left to graze on some of the greenest pastures in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

The Claxstone series is available at upscale British grocer Waitrose.

Other winners this year included the Extra Creamy Gorgonzola produced by Arrigoni in Italy which took the title of Nantwich Reserve Supreme Champion, and the UK's Belton Cheese which took the National Westminster trophy for the highest number of gold awards.

Retailer Marks & Spencer won the Supreme Retailer Award for its extensive cheese selection.

You knew it was coming. Behold the ‘cronut burger’

Visitors to the largest fair in the world will be able to tuck into the cronut burger.Visitors to the largest fair in the world will be able to tuck into the cronut burger. It was just a matter of time. In fact, given the meteoric popularity of the trendiest and hottest pastry in the world right now, it could even be said it's a little late in coming.

At the largest fun fair in Canada this month, visitors will be able to partake in what food pruveyor Epic Burgers and Waffles acknowledges is a "heart-stopping" creation that sandwiches a hamburger patty between two pieces of cronut clones, the hybrid croissant-donut pastry made famous by a French chef in New York this spring.

The Maple Bacon Jam Cronut Burger will become available when the fair -- the traditional marketplace for freakshow foods -- opens August 16 at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

The same purveyor also made headlines in 2011 when it created the Krispy Kreme burger.

The cronut is the brainchild of French chef Dominique Ansel in New York, a pastry that has circumvented the world within mere months of its launch in May, with copycat replicas being produced in Asia, Australia and Europe in both high-end pastry shops and most recently, a major corporate brand.

In South Korea, the Dunkin' Donuts chain debuted its version of the cronut which they called the "New York Pie Donut." In Manila, the cronut was launched as a "Donut croissant."

In response to the stratospheric popularity of his butter bomb pastry which draws pre-dawn lineups outside the New York bakery and which has created a cronut black market, Ansel trademarked the term 'cronut.' - AFP/Relaxnews, August 10, 2013.

Players should not be intimidated by Barcelon FC: Rajagopal – Bernama

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 11:05 AM PDT

August 10, 2013

National head coach Datuk K. Rajagobal wants his players to remain steadfast and not be intimidated by the might of their opponent tomorrow, Barcelona FC.

The Spanish Primera Liga club giants take on Rajagobal's boys at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, tomorrow night.

This is despite the fact that Argentine maestro Lionel Messi, voted FIFA World Best Player four times, would be at his best despite suffering from fatigue due to the hectic travelling schedule with his FC Barcelona team.

"I want the players to take this opportunity to give their full commitment while playing against one of the best football clubs in the world, just like how they played against English Premier League club Chelsea, recently," he said.

"I do not want the players to think of the big wins Barcelona FC had recorded in their previous matches like whipping Santos (8-0) and Thailand (7-1) before coming to Malaysia. I just want them to play their normal game," said Rajagobal.

Rajagobal said he might retain a majority of the players who had played against Chelsea... even if there are changes it might be one or two players.

"For me, playing against this team (FC Barcelona) is also part of our learning process and, most importantly, the local fans will get to be entertained by Saturday's match," he told reporters here after a training session, here, today.

FC Barcelona, dubbed the Los Blaugrana (blue and dark red team), marked their 2013/14 Asian Tour by whipping the Thai national team, 7-1 at the Rajagamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

They will wrap up their Asian Tour with the match against the Malaysian side before flying home.

Meanwhile, about 3,000 Barcelona fans turned up at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to watch their favourite stars in action during training, especially Lionel Messi, Neymar and Gerard Pique.

The one hour training session was conducted by newly appointed coach Gerardo Martino from Argentina who replaced Tito Vilanova who resigned to undergo treatment for cancer. – Bernama, August 9, 2013.

Chong Wei just a step away from world championships final - Bernama

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 10:41 AM PDT

August 10, 2013

World number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei overpowered Indonesian ace Tommy Sugiarto to stroll into the semifinals of the 2013 World Badminton Championships at the Tianhe Gymnasium, Guangzhou, today.

The top seed in the tournament showed why he is still the World number one as he took just 35 minutes to sweep aside the Indonesian pretender to the title, 21-6, 21-9, which was a flattering score by world standards.

Chong Wei (pic) will now meet third seed Du Pengyu of China who overcame India's rising star Parupalli Kashyap 16-21, 22-20, 21-15 in a three-set thriller.

In another quarterfinal match played earlier, defending champion Lin Dan from China beat his fellow countryman Chen Long 21-13, 22-20, to keep his hopes of winning a fifth world championship very much alive.

He will now meet Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh who had to dig deep into his reserves to overcome a spirited Jan O Jorgensen from Denmark, 21-8, 17-21, 22-20, in another exciting quarterfinal encounter.

In today's match, Chong Wei who has beaten the Indonesian six times before, was simply in his element, scoring points at will while Sugiarto was gasping for breath as he was forced to move around the court by Chong Wei's attacking play.

"After having beaten Wang Zhengming from China, I maintained the same momentum and Sugiarto was forced to follow my rhythm. Now I am more confident of my game," he said.

Against Pengyu, the head-to-head record stands at 7-1 in favour of Chong Wei with the only blemish coming in the Taiwan Open Super Series last December when Chong Wei had to withdraw due to an injury.

"I will have to be physically and mentally prepared for the match against Pengyu," he said.

As for his likely opponent in the final, Lin Dan, who is also his arch-rival, Chong Wei said he had watched the match between Lin Dan and Chen Long.

"It was a great match but right now I just want to focus on my match tomorrow and not worry about my would be opponent. Just like I have said before, this is a very important tournament for me and I want to do my best," said Chong Wei who is now 31.

In the 2011 World Championship at the Wembley Arena in London, Chong Wei lost to Lin Dan in the final. – Bernama, August 9, 2013.

Sharapova tops Forbes rich list of female athletes

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 05:12 PM PDT

August 09, 2013
Latest Update: August 09, 2013 04:12 pm

Tennis stars dominated the list of the world's 10 best-paid female athletes, Forbes magazine said on Tuesday, but highlighted the yawning earnings gap with their male counterparts in most sports.

Russia's Maria Sharapova headed the list, published on forbes.com, earning a total of $29 million (£18.9 million, 21.9 million euros) between June 2012 and June this year.

Tennis took the top four positions, with world number one Serena Williams of the United States second ($20.5 million), China's Li Na third ($18.2 million) and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus fourth ($15.7 million).

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark was in seventh ($13.6 million), followed by Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland ($7.4 million) and Serbia's Ana Ivanovic ($7 million).

US Nascar driver Danica Patrick (fifth with $15 million), South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna (sixth with $14 million)and American golfer Paula Creamer (10th with $5.5 million), were the only non-tennis stars in the top 10.

But the business magazine said disparities remained between men and women in terms of earnings in sport. World number one golfer Tiger Woods, for example, was the highest-paid athlete on the planet with earnings of $78 million in the 12 months between June 1, 2012 and June 1 this year.

Los Angeles Laker basketball star Kobe Bryant will earn $30.5 million next season but the highest salary in the women's equivalent of the NBA is $107,000.

Park Inbee of South Korea won $585,000 for winning the women's US Open but men's winner Justin Rose was awarded $1.4 million, the magazine noted.

Forbes said that there was increasing parity in terms of pay in tennis, after moves in recent years to put prize money on a more equal footing.

Endorsements that come on the back of Grand Slam wins such as Sharapova's 2012 French Open title dwarf most players' winnings.

The 26-year-old, for example, earned $23 million in endorsements with sportswear manufacturers Head and Nike after her victory at Roland Garros.

She has also launched her own brand of sweets, Sugarpova.

Nevertheless, in Forbes' June 24 list of the world's 100 highest-paid athletes, multiple tennis Grand Slam winner Roger Federer of Switzerland earned $71.5 million, second only to Woods.

Sharapova, number 22 in the top 100 list, earned more than the current men's number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia ($26.9 million) and Spain's Rafael Nadal ($26.4 million).

But in a sign of the ground to be made up, Williams' earnings were only enough to place her 68th in the top 100, while Li Na was 85th - and all three were the only women in the list.

Forbes list of the world's highest-paid female athletes 2013:

1. Maria Sharapova (RUS), tennis, $29 million

2. Serena Williams (USA), tennis, $20.5 million

3. Li Na (CHN), tennis, $18.2 million

4. Victoria Azarenka (BLR), tennis, $15.7 million

5. Danica Patrick (USA), Nascar, $15 million

6. Kim Yuna (KOR), figure skating, $14 million

7. Caroline Wozniacki (DEN), tennis, $13.6 million

8. Agnieszka Radwanska (POL), tennis, $7.4 million

9. Ana Ivanovic (SRB), tennis, $7 million

10. Paula Creamer (USA), golf, $5.5 million.

Beregu emas bakal berdepan ‘hukuman’ selepas terkandas di suku akhir - Bernama

Posted: 09 Aug 2013 02:57 AM PDT

August 09, 2013

Kes tembakan: P Pinang tukar slogan, tambah CCTV

- 8 Ogos, 2013.

An open letter seeking help from JAKIM

Posted: 08 Aug 2013 04:52 PM PDT

August 09, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

Dear JAKIM,

First and foremost, I would like to wish you assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh and a blessed Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri. I would like to apologise for writing this letter during the festive season when most of you would be on leave with your families.

However, I strongly believe that the reason that I am writing is justified and commands your immediate attention. If nothing is done, I am fearful that the faith and aqidah of many Malay Muslims in Malaysia may be at risk.

On the second last day of Ramadhan, my family and I decided to head out and enjoy iftar (I loathe using the term 'buka puasa' it is so un-Islamic!) together at a very prominent hotel in Shah Alam, Selangor. The hotel is called Concorde.

We were very impressed with the buffet spread that was on display in the hotel's coffee house and felt that the extremely expensive price was justified. So, in other words, we were happy to have good food and good company that evening.

However, as I was walking around the different food islands in the centre of the coffee house, I came to the dessert island. And what I saw horrified me to my wits end! I could not believe my eyes! There in open display was a plate full of tapai!

Now correct me if I'm wrong. JAKIM has issued a statement declaring that for any dish or drink to be considered halal, it needs to have less than 0.01% alcohol content. This practically means that there has to be zero alcohol content.

Tapai, as we all know, is a traditional Malay kuih that is prepared by fermenting pulut or ubi kayu. But, as we all also know, when you ferment food stuff, it turns into alcohol. Yes! I said alcohol! Haram jaddah!

Now I did not taste nor test the tapai that was on offer in Concorde Hotel's iftar buffet spread. One, because I did not want to contaminate myself with haram food, and two, because I did not have the expertise or tools to conduct a test for alcohol content.

With that being said, it is common knowledge that the tapai prepared by the Malay Muslim community in Malaysia has been known to contain as much as 5% alcohol. That is insane! Even beer only has between 2% to 3% of alcohol content.

As we are now already on the topic of alcohol content and it being haram, I would also like to bring JAKIM's attention to the east coast of Semenanjung Malaysia. Over there, the Malay Muslim community is known to indulge in air nira.

You can go anywhere in the states of Terengganu and Kelantan, be it in the big towns or the small villages, and you can find stalls and restaurants selling this popular drink made out of coconut. Unfortunately, it also goes through the fermentation process, and that means alcohol! Haram jaddah!

People there are proud of the fact that when they drink their local traditional drink, they can even get to a stage they like to call 'pening-pening'. This is atrocious! The Malay Muslims in the east coast of Semenanjung Malaysia are regularly getting drunk!

So, I hereby call on JAKIM to take action to protect Malaysia's Malay Muslim community from having their Islamic faith threatened. No! In fact, I demand that JAKIM take action on this matter immediately!

I see no other body or organisation in this country that has the authority and has upheld and protected the interest of Malay Muslims more than JAKIM. Oh wait! Actually PERKASA and UMNO have also been at the forefront of protecting the community's interest.

So please, JAKIM, PERKASA and UMNO. I beg of you to bring our Malay Muslim brothers and sisters to salvation. We absolutely cannot, as responsible Malay Muslims ourselves, allow them to burn in hell fire as we sit comfortably in beautiful heaven.

Thank you and wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Yours sincerely,

Zan Azlee

A concerned Malay Muslim

(with a little bit of repented Chinese blood)
