KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — Tony Fernandes, the owner of budget airline AirAsia, said today he was no longer in the market to buy into West Ham United football club, with which he has long been linked.

"The relationship between the owners and myself ... I don't think we are meant to be," Fernandes told Reuters in a telephone interview from London.

"The Hammers (West Ham) possibility has probably gone."

The 47-year-old Malaysian millionaire, who was educated in Britain and owns the Team Lotus Formula One squad, has long been a fan of the London football club, which was relegated from the English Premier League at the end of last season.

British media reported last month Fernandes had put in an offer for West Ham and that he wanted a 51 per cent stake. However, the current owners were not inclined to give him more than 35 per cent, the reports said. — Reuters

Football: Turkey rocked by nationwide match-fixing probe

ISTANBUL, July 4 – Turkey's football establishment was left reeling today by the detention of almost 60 people, including the chairman of champions Fenerbahce, in a major match-fixing investigation.

Police launched raids in 15 provinces across Turkey yesterday morning, searching club premises and detaining first division club players and administrators in connection with the allegations.

Turkish political leaders expressed concern at the claims.

"If even 5 per cent of these allegations prove right, it's very grave for Turkish sports. I hope that all this will result in a cleansing," said Huseyin Celik, deputy chairman of the ruling AK Party.

News of the detentions sent shares in the affected clubs tumbling on the Istanbul Stock Exchange this morning. Shares in Fenerbahce , whose chairman Aziz Yildirim was among those taken away by police, dropped 10 per cent.

Fenerbahce said in a statement it had not been involved in any wrongdoing and expressed its faith in the justice system.

"Everyone should know that Fenerbahce Sports Club has never been and will never be engaged in any unlawful and illegal activity. We are proud of our clean and victorious past," the club said on its website (http://www.fenerbahce.org/eng/).

Other detainees included footballers, trainers, managers and board members from top Turkish league clubs Sivasspor, Eskisehirspor and Genclerbirligi. Police also searched premises of Trabzonspor.

News channels reported that among matches being investigated were two Fenerbahce games, both of which they won against Eskisehirspor and Sivasspor last season.

Fifty people were detained yesterday and another eight today.

"Match-fixing earthquake in football," said a banner headline in Milliyet newspaper alongside a photograph of Yildirim being led away by police.

Yildirim was taken to hospital today but the reason was not immediately clear. He was released several hours later and returned to police custody. Two Fenerbahce players and two board members have also been detained.

The Turkish Football Federation said it closely monitored the developments regarding the wide-scale investigation, adding that necessary statements would be delivered once accurate information was obtained from relevant authorities.

"The judiciary made a decision and started the operation. I hope there won't be any troubling consequences," Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday in his first comments on the matter.

Other political leaders put a positive spin on the affair.

"The investigation shows Turkey is advancing rapidly towards becoming a true state of law," Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said.

If a court case is opened and defendants are convicted, they could face jail sentences while the relegation of teams could also be an option. – Reuters

British veterans of Spain’s Civil War honoured

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 07:27 PM PDT

LONDON, July 4 — Their spirit and convictions undiminished by age, British veterans of the Spanish Civil War were honoured last weekend at a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the epic conflict.

The International Brigades fought for the Republican side against fascism. And though General Francisco Franco won the 1936-39 war, the deaths of their colleagues was not in vain and the eventual return of democracy in Spain had made it all worthwhile, speakers said.

The event took place at the International Brigade Memorial in a park by the River Thames in London. Relatives and supporters of veterans raised one-fisted salutes, laid wreaths and sang songs of solidarity.

The guests of honour were David Lomon and Thomas Watters, two of only four known British volunteers still living.

"I was Jewish, I was an anti-fascist," said Lomon, now aged 93, of his decision to join the International Brigades. "Hitler and Mussolini were all over Europe. Mosley was stirring up trouble in London. I had to do something."

The war broke out on July 18, 1936, with a military uprising against the reformist Republican government. Franco was supported by Hitler and Mussolini. Russia aided the Republicans but Britain and other powers followed a non-intervention policy.

But some 35,000 British, American and other nationalities joined the brigades, many of them dockers, miners or other workers who saw Spain as the frontline against a global threat.

Lomon told Reuters he volunteered just after his 18th birthday through the Anti-Communist League and was given a train ticket to Paris.

From there he was taken to the French-Spanish border, walked over the Pyrenees into Spain, and after a few weeks training found himself at the frontline manning a Maxim machinegun.

"It was scary. It was an education for me," he said. "The people were so wonderful. The peasants suffered but they helped us so much, they made it all worthwhile.

"I fell in love with Spain. It was worth fighting for," he said, dapper and still sharp-minded.

Lomon was captured by Italian troops during the Republican retreat of 1938 and spent several months in a prison camp until he was repatriated.

"When I came back I decided I would carry on the fight."

With the outbreak of World War Two, he joined the Royal Navy and served on minesweepers in the English Channel and Asia.

Watters, 98, served with the Scottish Ambulance Unit. Born in Alloa, he trained as a medic while working as a bus driver in Glasgow and his main motivation was to help people.

"I had to go. There were many wounded. They asked for volunteers and I had to do it. I wasn't political," he told Reuters.

He was at the Battle of Jarama in February 1937, where both sides suffered huge casualties. After two years in Spain, he returned to his job on the buses.

War still resonates

Last week, the British government released intelligence files that said about 4,000 British and Irish men and women joined the anti-fascist fight, some 1,500 more than previously thought. Around 500 are known to have been killed.

Britain's MI5 spy agency kept records on them into the 1950s due to its fears of their possible communist links.

Among then were Eric Blair, better known as George Orwell, who wrote about his experiences in "Homage to Catalonia", and author Laurie Lee.

In the decades since the conflict, it has become a reference point for many other foreign interventions and civil wars, particularly during the Central American wars of the 1980s.

This year British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband and Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd both evoked it when calling for international action in support of Libyan rebels.

Cuba's Fidel Castro compared the Nato bombings to the German and Italian support for Franco.

And as the anniversary nears, the war is still controversial in Spain, which has been wary of reopening old wounds.

Peter Preston, regarded as the war's leading historian, said in remarks at the ceremony organised by the International Brigade Memorial Trust that after the war, Franco "brainwashed" people into thinking he stood for freedom.

Recent attempts to account for the thousands of dead from extra-judicial killings during and after the conflict had been stymied, he said, noting the removal from office by the conservative judiciary of investigating judge Baltasar Garzon.

"The struggle continues," Preston said, quoting the Republican rallying cry.

Still, a Spanish diplomat attended the ceremony and praised the foreign veterans.

"Their solidarity, their generosity, their courage and their decency is an example to the younger generation," said Fidel Lopez Alvarez, cultural counsellor at the Spanish Embassy.

In 2007, Spain passed a law giving citizenship to the veterans. Lomon said he received his passport two weeks ago.

"You deserve it," Lopez Alvarez told him. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, July 4 – The power of the film franchise is in evidence this week with the third installment of Transformers: Dark of the Moon debuting with the biggest take of 2011 at US$43.2 million (RM129.84 million) in its opening night.

Also, the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides, is poised to break the US$1 billion mark.

Despite blockbusters' bulging budgets, the built-in audience means less risk and a big potential payoff. Green Lantern, which has earned a modest US$123.8 million since June 17, will get a sequel and a new director. Thor 2 will also part with director Kenneth Branagh, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sequels for Sherlock Holmes, Mission: Impossible, Happy Feet, Paranormal Activity and Spy Kids are coming in 2011.

Here is a list of upcoming sequels for 2012:

• Wrath of the Titans (Clash of the Titans sequel) returns in March in 3D again, starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

• Men in Black 3 is back next May after a decade with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones fighting aliens.

• Prometheus, Ridley Scott's prequel to Alien, the series's fifth installment, has a new cast including Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, arriving in June.

• Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) flies in in July, the fourth in the franchise.

• Dark Knight Rises, Christopher Nolan's last Batman film, swoops down in July, with Christian Bale and Gary Oldman.

• The Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner while Matt Damon sits this one out, shows up in August after a five-year absence.

• Bond 23 stars Daniel Craig in his role as 007, after a break since 2008's Quantum of Silence. Directed by Sam Mendes and costarring Javier Bardem.

• The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the finale of the mega blockbuster franchise, ends the trilogy in November.

• Ghostbusters 3 will be resurrected from 1989 with original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and Ivan Reitman directing again, in December.

• Man of Steel, the new Superman reboot with Henry Cavill and costarring Amy Adams and Russell Crowe, will be directed by Zach Snyder (Sucker Punch, 300).

More sequels planned for 2012 include J.J. Abrams's Star Trek 2, Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables 2 and Die Hard 5 starring Bruce Willis, plus the animated Madagascar 2 and Ice Age 4.

With the success of Fast and Furious, The Hangover, The Karate Kid, Salt and Despicable Me, these films are planning sequels for 2013, which will also see a new Pirates of the Caribbean and James Cameron's much-anticipated Avatar 2.

Some unexpected sequels that could be resurrected in 2013 include Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park 4, Beverly Hills Cop 4 with Eddie Murphy, Hancock 2 and Independence Day 2 with Will Smith, plus Pixar's Monster University, the second installment of 2001's animated hit, Monsters, Inc.

There is even rumour of more from Austin Powers, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Kill Bill, Cloverfield and a possible Blade Runner prequel. – AFP

The truth shall set you free

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 04:47 PM PDT

JULY 4 — Whenever I flush the toilet at home, my cat, often seen lazing on the floor would spring to her feet and run for her life. It's obvious that the sudden sound of rushing water petrifies her tremendously.

Sometimes, out of strange habit, I find myself warning her that I will be flushing the toilet in false hope that she would not get agitated. I used to think that once she gets accustomed to the noise, she would get over her unreasonable fear.

I've had her for more than two years and each time I flush the toilet, it still has the same effect on her, with or without my warning.

It then dawns on me that my cat will continue to have this fear simply because she is unable to comprehend what is happening. There's nothing I can do about it for how does one explain to a cat what a flushing mechanism is?

Life is full of fears. We fear for our safety, we fear for our future, we fear humiliation and we fear death but what we probably fear the most is what we don't know, just like my cat.

In the past weeks, the government has been carrying out a campaign to instill fear in the rakyat. We have been warned that if we participate in the Bersih campaign, we will be committing a crime and as result of that, our freedom will be taken away.

It is quite understandable that every reasonable person will be frightened by this knowledge. If the most fearsome thing in this world is indeed ignorance, why are we then still afraid despite knowing the consequences of our actions?

Many people have asked me whether I am afraid. The simple truth is, yes I am but not so much of what will happen in the next couple of days, but of what will become of our beloved country if we continue to allow the government to intimidate us.

Knowing what might happen to my security and freedom is only half as scary as not knowing the fate of our country and the future of young Malaysians.

Great religions and nations teach us to stand up for the truth. Our government teaches us otherwise. When a government becomes the main agent provocateur of fear and at the same time warns its people that they will be guilty for provoking fear and instability, something is fundamentally wrong.

So far, the real culprit for instilling fear and provocation seems to be coming from the government, not those who choose to wear yellow T-shirts, blow bubbles into the air, carry yellow balloons and walk peacefully on their streets on July 9. The colour yellow does not provoke, but public threats of arrest and detention do.

A few days ago, I confessed to a friend that what's happening in Malaysia stresses me more than what I had experienced in Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Cambodia. He was surprised and wanted to know why. My answer to him, "Because this is not supposed to happen here. You expect it to happen in those countries but not here."

What most people don't seem to understand is how fundamentally tragic and wrong it is to be ruled by a government that imposes arbitrary laws that go against the core principles of human rights and to add salt to the wound, resist the call by its people for free and fair election. I've seen it in Afghanistan, Ethiopia and Cambodia and sadly, Malaysia seems to have hopped on the bandwagon.

Some friends have argued with me that Malaysia is far better off than these countries. I was asked to evaluate our economy and told that I should come to the conclusion that we are better off. I'm reminded that we're blessed for having a government that promotes economic growth and I should just be grateful.

It would be a persuasive argument but for the nagging question that if a man provides for his family, does it entitle him to do whatever he wants with them? Are they saying that if their father has looked after their welfare, then surely they should be able to forgive him for raping their sister?

These days when I walk on the street, I look over my shoulders, not for snatch thieves but for the police. When an innocent citizen feels threatened by the very people they depend on for protection, something is wrong.

When an anxious child who is afraid of the dark is being told that monsters will come after them when the light is turned off, something is wrong. If you still don't know how to differentiate who the real coward and culprit is in this situation we're facing today, then shame on you for refusing to believe and see the truth. You're not a cat and you should know better.

For close to half a century, we have been living in fear. I've seen that fear in my parents and friends. I've experienced how we have conditioned ourselves to lower our voices when we talk about "sensitive" issues.

I've seen how people disguise themselves as someone they're not simply because they believe it is safer to live a lie than to face the truth. The only credit the government can ever claim is that they've run a pretty successful campaign, thanks to us.

We've come to a crossroad where we either rise above our fear or allow it to perpetuate for generations to come.

Plato once said, "We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light."

We have been living this real tragedy for far too long.

Tolong jangan berotak ******

Posted: 03 Jul 2011 04:34 PM PDT

Saya perhatikan bahawa semakin ramai Rakyat Jelata berminat memakai pakaian warna ****** sejak kemeja-T tertentu diharamkan pemerintah.

Err . . . tajuk buku cerpen aku, 'Namaku Epal ******'. Seluruh kulit luar buku tu berwarna ******. Err . .

Saya turut mengingatkan: "Wahai! Janganlah anda berotak ******. Nanti polis tangkap masuk lokap!"

Apabila saya nyatakan "Wahai! Tolong rajin berus gigi tiga kali sehari.

Antaranya adalah pelekat Post-It, penutup cecair pencuci jenama Dynamo, kotak teh Lipton, pek mi Maggi, pen penanda (highlighter), mangga, mi kuning, telur goreng, kereta warna ******, Yellow Pages, serbuk kunyit jenama Adabi, dinding, rambutan, botol air Herbalife, kad ATM Maybank, minyak hitam jenama Shell, jersi Brasil dan petrol RON95.

Merah membara semangat waja

Putihmu bersih budi pekerti

****** berdaulat payung negara

Biru perpaduan kami semua

Maaf!

* The views expressed here are the personal opinion of the columnist.

Saksi: Sarbaini jatuh ketika cuba tinggalkan SPRM ikut tingkap

Posted: 04 Jul 2011 02:43 AM PDT
