Sharapova names Connors her new coach

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 03:44 AM PDT

July 14, 2013

World number two Maria Sharapova, a stunning second-round loser at Wimbledon last month, has taken on eight-time grand slam winner Jimmy Connors as her new coach, she said on Saturday.

"I am happy to announce that Jimmy Connors will be my new coach," the 26-year-old Russian, a four-time major winner, posted on her website (www.mariasharapova.com).

"I have known Jimmy for many years and we briefly worked together in 2008 just before the Australian Open. I am really excited about our new partnership and am looking forward to the upcoming tournaments."

The Russian won the 2008 Australian Open, beating Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the final in an all-conquering campaign in which she did not lose a set.

Sharapova, who was ousted at Wimbledon in straight sets by Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal, announced the coaching move two days after officially parting ways with Thomas Hogstedt, who had coached her the past three years.

Connors, 60, previously served a 19-month stint as coach for Andy Roddick from 2006 to 2008. Under his guidance, Roddick reached the final of the 2006 U.S. Open and won five ATP titles.

Roddick said in announcing the split that Connors had decided to step down and he praised the Hall of Famer for improving his game.

"Playing up in the court. I had to adjust my game. He's helped my backhand a ton," Roddick said. "And the fighting spirit. When we got together I was as close to down and out as I've been. I really credit him for that spark and getting me back into the top five and a slam final."

Working with Hogstedt, Sharapova won the 2012 French Open for her first grand slam title since 2008, and this year won Indian Wells and Stuttgart and reached three other finals - Miami, Madrid and Roland Garros - losing to world number one Serena Williams in all three.

Former world number one Sharapova, a fierce competitor like her new coach, might be hoping to pick the American's brain on a strategy to overcome top rival Williams, who has dominated her on the court 13-0 in head-to-head meetings over the past nine years.
The Russian said parting ways with Hogstedt had been a mutual decision.

"Due to personal issues (Hogstedt) was not able to travel in the near future and we both agreed it was the right time to move our separate ways," Sharapova said. "I am thankful for all of his work and wish him much success in the future." - Reuters, July 14, 2013.

Moyes buoyed by Zaha, Januzaj

Posted: 13 Jul 2013 10:07 PM PDT

July 14, 2013

Manchester United player Ryan Giggs (L) talks as manager David Moyes looks at him during a news conference in central Sydney today. Manchester United will face an A-League (Australian first division league) all-stars team on July 20 in Sydney. - Reuters picDavid Moyes took heart from sparkling debuts by two emerging stars after his reign as Manchester United manager got off to a low-key start with an upset loss in Thailand.

A generally flat performance was enlivened by the eye-catching trickery of Belgian teen Adnan Januzaj, before new signing Wilfried Zaha came on and nearly snatched the equaliser.

After 27 years and 38 trophies under Alex Ferguson, Moyes admitted losing 1-0 to the Singha All-Star XI - a team pulled together from the best players of the Thai league - "wasn't a brilliant result".

But he was sufficiently encouraged by Zaha, the hero of Crystal Palace's promotion to the Premier League, to suggest he is in line for his competitive debut this season.

"I thought when Wilf came on he gave us a little lift. He was certainly unlucky not to score with his attempt at goal," said Moyes, adding, "I hope so" when asked if Zaha would get an opportunity this season.

"We'll see how he does. We're bringing him here to give him a chance," said the Scot.

"It's the first time I've worked with him, first time I've had a chance to see him up close so he'll certainly be part of the squad and we'll see if we can fit him in (to the first team) as often as we can."

After coming on in the second half, Zaha missed a header from close range but with eight minutes left, he nearly spared United's blushes when he rattled the far post with a curling shot from inside the box.

Januzaj, the top-rated 18-year-old with highlight reels on YouTube, started the game on the right but he impressed all over the pitch with his one-touch control, pace, quick feet and passing.

And the slight Belgian, United's reserve team player of the year last season, popped up for their best chance of the first half but disappointingly volleyed Fabio's cross over the bar.

"I thought he played well tonight, I thought he was a plus for us," said Moyes of Januzaj.

"It's always good when you give a young player a chance and he shows up, and I thought he did tonight. The more he plays like that, the more opportunities he's liable to get."

Moyes fielded a side missing Robin van Persie, captain Nemanja Vidic, Shinji Kagawa and Wayne Rooney, who fuelled transfer speculation when he pulled out of the Asian tour on day one with a hamstring injury.

England striker Danny Welbeck, the only forward still on tour, played alone up front with Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs, Januzaj and Michael Carrick in midfield.

Whether the team-sheet can one day match the 19,500 pounds ($30,000) fetched recently by a copy of Alex Ferguson's debut line-up - for a 2-0 defeat at Oxford United in 1986 - remains to be seen.

But Moyes showed few concerns over the loss. United flew straight to Sydney to continue their tour, with the Premier League title defence not starting until August 17.

"I said to (the players), this isn't the one we desperately needed to win. It's the one that we need to get prepared to win games from," said Moyes.

"It's a friendly game, you want to win all your games if you can but in relative terms it's not of the biggest importance." - AFP, July 14, 2013

“Glee” star Cory Monteith found dead In Vancouver hotel room

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 02:02 AM PDT

July 14, 2013

"Glee" star Cory Monteith was found dead on Saturday. - ReutersCanadian actor Cory Monteith (pic), 31-year-old heart throb of Fox's musical-comedy television series "Glee", was found dead on Saturday in his Vancouver hotel room, police said.

Police and paramedics found no signs of foul play and the cause of death was not immediately apparent, British Columbia Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe told reporters at a news conference.

Monteith had talked about his problems with substance abuse.

In response to a question about whether Monteith died of a drug overdose, Vancouver Police Department acting chief Doug LePard said he would "not discuss anything that we might have found in the room at this time".

"We only notified family members about an hour ago, so we haven't even been able to have those conversations with them," he said.

Monteith, whose "Glee" character Finn Hudson was a high school football player turned enthusiastic Glee club - or musical group - singer, was treated at a rehabilitation facility for an unspecified substance addiction this year.

The actor, who grew up in Victoria, British Columbia, told Parade magazine in 2011 about what he called a serious drug problem during his teenage years, and was first treated for addiction at 19.

Other people were in Monteith's Pacific Rim Hotel room on Friday night but evidence, including fob key entries, indicated he returned to his room by himself early on Saturday and was alone when he died, police said. He was due to check out of the hotel that day.

Monteith had been dead for several hours when his body was discovered by police and paramedics answering an emergency call, Lapointe said.

"The death of a young person is a tragedy for their family, friends and community," Lapointe said. "A sudden death is more shocking and our hearts go out to the family and friends who are mourning the loss of this young man."

Monteith began his career in a number of small roles leading up to a recurring part between 2006 and 2007 in the ABC Family science-fiction drama "Kyle XY" and another role around the same time on the MTV series "Kaya".

But "Glee," a show set in the small town of Lima, Ohio, was Monteith's breakthrough role. A big part of the show was his character's on-again-off-again romance with glee club star Rachel Berry, an aspiring entertainer played by Lea Michele.

Monteith and Michele followed in the footsteps of their fictional counterparts by dating in real life.

In recent episodes of the series, Rachel had jetted off to attend college in New York while Finn stayed in Lima, where he worked at his father's auto repair shop and later got involved in helping lead his former school's glee club.

In a statement on their "Glee" Twitter page, the executive producers of the show and Fox said they were "deeply saddened by this tragic news".

"Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person," the Twitter message said. "He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Singer and former "Glee" actress Kristin Chenoweth said in a message on Twitter shortly after the police news conference, "You will be loved. Always."

An autopsy was set for Monday, LePard said. - Reuters, July 14, 2013.

Goodbye, telegram

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 01:03 AM PDT

July 14, 2013

After 162 years of connecting people, India is now set to disband the world's last major telegram service and its legions of cycle-borne delivery workers. With the service made redundant by a technological revolution, the final message will be sent tomorrow. AFP, July 14, 2013.Sixty-six years ago, Santosh Sharma saw her mother sell gold bangles to feed and clothe her family of six and then dispatch telegrams to her brothers urging them to leave newly-created Pakistan and gather in New Delhi.

"Come, we will all live in India," wrote Sharma's mother, Devika.

As the only literate woman in the family, Devika was entrusted with the task of sending the messages to distant family members and fellow Hindu friends.

The family finally reunited in the Indian capital after countless exchanges, escaping the religious violence which claimed up to a million lives following the partition of the subcontinent in 1947.

"Crossing the border meant risking your own life," Santosh Sharma shared, remembering the tense period of post-partition India.

"At that time the telegram was the only way to keep families informed, give speedy updates and reunite."

After 162 years of connecting people, India is now set to disband the world's last major telegram service and its legions of cycle-borne delivery workers.

With the service made redundant by a technological revolution, the final message will be sent tomorrow.

In the days before mobile phones and the Internet, the telegram network was the main form of communication, with 20 million messages dispatched from India in 1947 alone.

In 2012, the number of telegrams dwindled to 40,000 and most of them were by Indian government departments conveying administrative messages to remote parts of the country.

A colonial legacy

India's first telegraph lines were laid by British rulers in 1851 in the colonial capital of Kolkata, stretching about 25 miles (40 kilometres) down the Hoogly River to a key harbour on the Bay of Bengal.

By the turn of the century, 125,000 miles of wire had been unrolled and the service was used for much more than trade and commerce and employed thousands of educated Indians.

Its messages, always hand-delivered, announced court judgements, transfers, arrivals, births, weather, war and business transactions as well as the most dreaded news of all - deaths.

Known locally as the "Taar" (wire), the service is also remembered for helping the British trading conglomerate the East India Company maintain its political and military domination of the region.

When Indian troops rebelled in 1857, sparking a widespread uprising against colonial rule, the telegram is credited with playing a crucial rule in helping British forces mobilise and regain control.

R.K. Rai, a retired telegraph operator in New Delhi, remembers the service in its pomp as hundreds of workers crashed out the dots and dashes of Morse Code used on telegraph machines.

"The whole office sounded like a factory," he remembers. "Sometimes we felt we knew every significant detail of our customer's lives," he said. "The word privacy did not exist in anyone's dictionary then."

Rai retired from the department in 2006 and he regularly visits his former workplace, the Central Telegraph Office, built in a white colonial style in the centre of the capital.

It send out less than 10 messages a day on average, though recent publicity about the imminent closure of the office has led dozens of people to send one last message, each costing 9 rupees (RM 0.50) per word as a memento.

Only 75 telegraph offices remain nation-wide, employing less than 1,000 telegraph operators.

When the telegraph offices close this month, the workers will be absorbed into other departments in the communications ministry.

Today, Rai, like the rest of the mobile-toting country, says he prefers using his phone to send messages.

"The new technology is so fast it just surprises me. Communication is a game of speed, the fastest will always win the game," he said.

"Eventually the telegraph system had to face defeat." - AFP/Relaxnews, July 14, 2013.

Paul Low didesak segerakan enam resolusi Transparency International

Posted: 14 Jul 2013 02:07 AM PDT

July 14, 2013

Ahli Parlimen Bukit Mertajam, Sim Chee Keong mendesak Datuk Paul Low melaksanakan enam resolusi Transparency International- Malaysia (TI-M) pada 2012 ketika masih diterajui Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri itu.

Beliau mempersoal kewibawaan Paul kerana melengah-lengahkan semua pelaksanaan resolusi berkenaan sedangkan berpeluang melaksanakannya.

- 14 Julai, 2013.
