Pakistan players ‘betrayed cricket’ by taking bribes, court told

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 08:51 AM PDT

LONDON, Oct 5 – Three Pakistan cricketers, driven by greed, betrayed their team mates and the sport of cricket itself by taking bribes to fix incidents during a test match against England last year, a London court heard today.

The plot was orchestrated by Pakistan captain Salman Butt and his agent Mazhar Majeed and involved the team's two opening fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir who were instructed to bowl three no-balls at a pre-agreed time, prosecutors allege.

"This case reveals a depressing tale of rampant corruption at the heart of international cricket, with the key players being members of the Pakistan cricket team," prosecutor Aftab Jafferjee told the jury at Southwark Crown Court.

He said the men had "contaminated" the games and "their activity represents a betrayal by them of their own team, their own Board of Cricket and most damaging of all a betrayal of the sport of cricket itself – and all for greed".

The court heard that the scam was uncovered by a journalist at the News of the World newspaper, the tabloid at the centre of the phone hacking scandal which has rocked Rupert Murdoch's News Corp empire. The paper has since been closed down.

Jafferjee said journalist Mazhar Mahmood, well-known for revealing wrongdoing amongst British politicians, celebrities and even royalty often posing as a "fake sheikh", had approached Majeed saying he was a wealthy Indian businessman wanting to set up a tournament in the Emirates.

"Were this investigation not to have been permitted, this activity of 'fixing' would have certainly continued – unabated and unaccountable – and beyond the reach of the law," the prosecutor said.

Jafferjee said the activity was underpinned by the betting industry in the Asian subcontinent – Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Far East, adding that gambling in the Asian subcontinent on cricket games alone had a turnover of US$40-50 billion (RM127.66-159.58 billion) a year.

The jury of six men and six women was told that only Butt and Asif were on trial, but Jafferjee stressed there was "nothing sinister" in the absence of Majeed and Amir from the proceedings, the Press Association reported.

Butt and Asif deny conspiracy to cheat and conspiracy to accept corrupt payments between Aug. 15 and 29 last year.

Butt made his test debut for Pakistan in 2003 and since then has played in 33 test matches, 78 one-day internationals and 24 Twenty20 games for his country.

He was appointed captain of Pakistan's test side on July 16 last year, during the tour of England.

Jafferjee said: "If the prosecution are right about his activity, that appointment consolidated his influence within the team, and assured his ability to direct activity on the field, both legitimate and corrupt."

Butt told police in interview that the timing of three no-balls during the Lord's Test exactly when Majeed told the News of the World journalist they would be bowled was just "a series of freakish occurrences", the court heard.

Asif was first selected to play for Pakistan in 2005 and has represented his country in 23 test matches, 38 one-day internationals and 11 Twenty20 games.

Last summer he was ranked the world's second-best Test bowler by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and took his 100th Test wicket during the series in England.

Asif told detectives it was "just chance" that he bowled a no-ball exactly when Majeed said he would.

Two-thirds of luxury Olympics deals still unsold

LONDON, Oct 5 – Around two-thirds of the most expensive corporate hospitality packages for the 2012 London Olympics have yet to be sold, although organisers said today they were confident of finding buyers for the rest despite the gloomy economic outlook.

Prestige Ticketing Ltd, the company with sole corporate hospitality rights inside the Olympic venues, said it had sold 30-40 per cent of its allocation, with strong demand for the tennis, diving and equestrian events.

Luxury hospitality deals cost up to £4,500 (RM22,126) a head for a day, including top-tier tickets, wine and meals in a three-storey pavilion being built next to the main stadium in east London.

"Whilst the economic climate is challenging, we have to work that bit harder and not rely on the banking and financial sectors which are traditionally very strong in hospitality," Alan Gilpin, Prestige's chief operating officer, told a news conference with less than 300 days to go before the Games begin.

Traditional customers in finance and advertising have been joined by companies in sectors like construction, energy and mining, he added. Prestige said the first event where it sold out its allocation was the women's hockey final.

The company, a joint venture between French catering group Sodexo and British hospitality firm Mike Burton Group, is selling 120,000 tickets for the Olympics and the Paralympics, less than 1 per cent of the total. The Games' organisers have appointed two other companies to sell hospitality deals, Thomas Cook and Jet Set Sports.

Many Britons were left disappointed after failing to secure tickets for the Games. With their high price tag, hospitality deals are the only way to guarantee a place at the most popular events.

Prestige's marketing director Tony Barnard said it would "certainly" sell all of its packages for the main Olympics site in east London.

It is building a hospitality pavilion with a 3,000 capacity, costing £7.5 million, less than 100 metres (yards) from the Olympics stadium. It is banking on hard-pressed companies using the Games to try to drum up more business from potential clients.

Professor Simon Chadwick, director of the Centre for the International Business of Sport at Coventry University, central England, who has conducted research for Prestige, said the downturn had affected hospitality firms in recent years, but the Games' special cachet would probably give them a boost.

"The corporate hospitality industry has hit a number of challenges in the last three or four years, particularly in light of the economic downturn," Chadwick told a news conference.

"But I think the Olympic Games is exceptional... and has the strength to transcend prevailing economic conditions." – Reuters

Higher testosterone may equal lower heart risks

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 05:58 AM PDT

GOTEBORG, Oct 5 — Elderly men with naturally higher levels of testosterone may be less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke than those men with lower levels of the hormone, according to a study.

Findings published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that of 2,400 Swedish men in their 70s and 80s, those with the highest testosterone levels were less likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke over the next several years than men with the lowest levels.

But the results do not prove that testosterone itself deserves the credit, and it's too soon to recommend testosterone replacement to try to lower heart risks.

"What we can say is that elderly men with high testosterone levels are relatively protected against cardiovascular events, and therefore lower testosterone is a marker for increased cardiovascular risk," said Asa Tivesten, at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Goteborg, Sweden, who led the study.

It's known that any serious health condition can lower testosterone levels, as can obesity. But in the study, the researchers accounted for a number of health factors — including the men's weight, blood pressure and any diagnoses of diabetes, heart disease or stroke at the outset.

Of 604 men in the bottom quarter for levels of the "male" hormone at the study's start, 21 per cent had a heart attack, severe chest pain or stroke over roughly five years.

That compared with roughly 16 per cent of the 606 men who started out with the highest testosterone levels.

Even accounting for health factors, men in the highest-testosterone group still showed a 30 per cent lower risk of heart disease or stroke compared with the other three-quarters of the study group.

But that doesn't rule out the possibility that something other than testosterone may be at work, said JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who was not involved in the study.

"Low testosterone may be a marker of other health conditions that put men at higher risk of cardiovascular disease," she said.

Potential reasons for why higher natural testosterone levels may be good for the heart include the fact that higher testosterone generally means less body fat and more lean muscle.

What's needed, she added, is evidence from clinical trials that actually test whether testosterone replacement in older men cuts the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Those trials are ongoing and so far, she noted, the results are mixed on whether testosterone replacement improves "intermediate" outcomes like cholesterol or blood sugar levels.

No one yet knows if it affects the ultimate outcomes of cardiovascular disease and lifespan.

"There are many unanswered questions, and I don't think this means that men should be trying to boost their testosterone with testosterone replacement therapy," she said.

The experience with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in women offers a cautionary tale.

Before 2002, many women used HRT in the hopes of warding off heart disease and osteoporosis. Then a large US clinical trial found that women given pills containing estrogen and progesterone actually had higher risks of blood clots, heart attack, stroke and breast cancer than women given placebo pills.

Now HRT is largely used only for treating severe hot flashes — and then, only at the lowest dose and for the shortest time possible.

"So there are concerns about the risks in men," Manson said.

Among those are the potential for testosterone to contribute to blood clots, liver damage or prostate cancer.

"This is a study of endogenous (natural) hormone production. It does not provide information about what is happening when hormones are given as a therapy," Tiveston said. — Reuters

Late harvest could yield superior US wines

SANTA ROSA (California), Oct 5 — Despite a late harvest in the Sonoma region of California and heavy rains that tore through vineyards, California wine makers expect this year's grapes to yield superior wines.

Like other grape growers in the region Saralee Kunde is coping with the impact of the delayed harvest because of the above average rainfall and cool summer weather.

Her crop of Viognier grapes, a variety that originated in the northern Rhone region of France, is off by 60 per cent.

"The vineyards got slammed," she said. "We had five inches of rain in May and June, that's not when we need the rain. Our Pinot Noir weathered it well, but I heard of some growers who lost 80 per cent of their Cabernet (Sauvignon) crop."

Grapes from her 350 acres of vineyards in the Russian River Valley are sought after by wine producers. Each of her vines can be traced back to its roots to the mother block at the University of California at Davis.

Kunde, a dairy farmer's daughter originally from Wisconsin, and her husband Richard began planting vines in 1989. They supply grapes to 60 winemakers and wineries including The Biltmore in North Carolina, which claims to be the most visited winery in the United States.

"Winemakers are looking for flavors. Each clone has something a little bit different and we grow the grapes for the flavors," Kunde said.

The vintners have 54 different clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Roussane and more than a half-dozen other varietals with which to blend their wines.

"2011 has the potential of being one of the best vintages I've ever seen," said Rod Berglund, the owner and winemaker of Joseph Swann wines in Forestville, California, after walking through the vineyards to decide which grapes he wanted for his 32nd harvest.

"I think this is as good as I've ever seen in terms of fruit quality," he added.

Rob Davis, of the Jordan Vineyard & Winery in the nearby Alexander Valley, agrees.

"This year the growing season was rough," he said. "But I believe the grapes that remain have the potential to make incredible wines." — Reuters

LONDON, Oct 5 – The Black Eyed Peas will not take part in a Michael Jackson tribute concert being held in the Welsh city of Cardiff at the weekend, organisers said.

The band was one of the biggest draws in the lineup for the show on Saturday.

"Due to unavoidable circumstances, the Black Eyed Peas will be unable to perform at this Saturday's Michael Forever event," said Chris Hunt, head of Global Live Events which is staging the concert.

"It is with regret that we announce the removal of Black Eyed Peas from the Michael Forever bill, but I look forward to a great night with other earth shattering artists.

"The event is really getting into gear and is going to be a fantastic evening for all."

Performing on the night will be artists including Jackson's sister La Toya, some of his brothers, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Gladys Knight and Smokey Robinson.

Among the British stars will be Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, JLS and Diversity, while Beyonce will appear in a video performance.

The concert has divided Jackson's family, with brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie and sister La Toya defending the event and Jermaine and Randy opposing it, partly because it coincides with the US trial of the late singer's doctor Conrad Murray.

The Jackson estate has also voiced concerns about where the proceeds from the Michael Forever Tribute Concert eventually go.

Busan lays down the red carpet for Asia’s biggest film festival

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 01:54 AM PDT

HONG KONG, Oct 5 – The international cinema community is descending on the South Korean port city of Busan this week for an event that bills itself as Asia's largest film festival.

The 16th Busan International Film Festival will run from tomorrow, October 6 through October 14 and will feature a selection of 307 films from 70 countries, with 135 of them being billed as either world or international premieres.

The festival will this year move into the brand new, US$140 million (RM446.83 million) Busan Cinema Centre, which features a 4,000-seat outdoor theatre as well as a film archive and database as the event tries to cement its place not only on the international festival calendar but as the leading event of its kind in Asia.

Busan has in recent years met with increasing competition from the growing influence of festivals in the Chinese cities of Beijing in April, Shanghai in June and the long-running event in Tokyo, which kicks off on October 22.

Establishing itself in the massive cinema centre is seen as one way of ensuring its influence continues, as is an expanded film market (for business) and a more complex selection of films that not only features such programmes as Korean Cinema Today and A Window on Asian Cinema, but will this year include a retrospective of Portuguese cinema and a look at what is currently happening in the Australian cinema scene.

This year's edition will open tomorrow with the premiere of local director Song Il-gon's romance Always and will close on Friday, October 14 with the premiere of the Japanese drama Chronicle of My Mother from Masato Harado.

Busan is the festival credited with not only launching the international careers of such lauded local directors as Kim Ki-duk (Samaritan Girl) and Bong Joon-ho (The Host) but of helping the work of such directors as China's Jia Zhangke (Still Life) reach the world outside.

Thousands of representatives from the international film-making community come to the festival each year – both to promote their own films and investigate the possibilities of co-productions – while more and more international film fans are also making the journey, according to the festival organisers.

For those unable to make the trip, the festival's official website features daily updates and links to webcasts of the various press conferences, which this year will feature noted Asian directors such as Johnnie To and Tsui Hark alongside international visitors such as French director Luc Besson and actress Isabelle Huppert. – AFP

Poets lead running for Nobel Literature prize

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 12:24 AM PDT

Syrian poet Adonis, a champion of democracy and secular thought, is the favourite to win. — Reuters file pic

STOCKHOLM, Oct 5 — Two poets, one Swedish and the other Syrian, are leading the betting to win the 2011 Nobel Literature prize, a bookmaker said yesterday, though past prizes have often defied the predictions.

British betting firm Ladbrokes have the 81-year-old Syrian poet known as Adonis at odds of 4/1 and Swede Tomas Transtromer, 80, at 7/1 to win the 10 million crown (RM4.6 million) prize, to be announced on October 6. Japan's Haruki Murakami was third at 8/1.

All three have been on the betting list of candidates before, but an award to Adonis, a champion of democracy and secular thought, would chime well with Arab Spring revolts in several Middle Eastern nations — though he has not been without his critics who view his support for the uprisings as too muted.

Apart from his political engagement, Khaled Mattawa, who has translated many of Adonis' works into English, said the Syrian — named Ali Hamid Saeed at birth — deserved to be recognised for his artistry.

"When I think of Adonis as a poet ... I think of people like Picasso or Matisse, people who opened up a new way of envisioning experience," Mattawa, an associate professor at the University of Michigan, told Reuters.

Adonis was awarded Germany's prestigious Goethe Prize for literature in May.

"I hope with the greater attention being brought to him, people recognise Arab literature is not only compelling for its content or for the way it might help us to understand Arab societies ... but also (that Adonis's work can) give us a sense of the conceptual prowess we find in modern Arab literature," Mattawa said.

The last poet to win the Nobel Literature prize was Poland's Wislawa Szymborska in 1996.

Transtromer, whose subtle, multi-layered work often deals with the relation between man and nature or the conscious and unconscious, is a regular on the list of favourites to win the prize.

"Transtromer is the person who stands head and shoulders above anyone else," said Neil Astley, founding editor at Transtromer's publishers Bloodaxe Books in Britain.

Interest in Swedish writing has increased in recent years, even if that has mainly been in the crime fiction books of dead writer Stieg Larsson and his "Millennium" trilogy.

"It is not just the crime-writer boom. That has been a locomotive for other Swedish literature," said Helen Sigeland at the Swedish Arts Council, where she is responsible for promoting Swedish literature abroad.

The Nobel prize sometimes results in a surprise choice of an artists who is little known outside a small circle of connoisseurs.

This has included Herta Mueller of Germany in 2009 and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio in 2008, though the 2010 winner, Mario Vargas Llosa, is widely read. Doris Lessing, Harold Pinter and Orhan Pamuk are also laureates.

One figure who would seem to be a very outside bet is Bob Dylan. Even so, his Ladbrokes odds have narrowed to 10/1 from 100/1 last week. — Reuters

Sisters in Islam tegas bantah hudud, dakwa tidak adil kepada wanita

Posted: 05 Oct 2011 02:52 AM PDT

Bagaimanapun pelaksanaan terbantut ekoran sekatan pusat atas alasan kedudukan Perlembagaan Persekutuan.
