Jack Daniel’s angers rivals with ‘Tennessee Whisky’ label

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 09:28 PM PDT

March 30, 2014

For Jack Daniel's, Tennessee's world-famous corn-based whisky should be made according to a strict recipe – basically, its own.

But to rivals, some with their roots in ginning up moonshine in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains, Jack Daniel's wants to lock them out of a booming business.

In a battle of two global giants of liquor distribution, Diageo versus Brown-Forman, Jack Daniel's wants legislators in the state capital Nashville to implement clear standards on what spirit can wear the "Tennessee Whisky" label.

The industry powerhouse says only the drink that is made from at least 51% corn fermented mash, aged in new barrels of charred oak, filtered through maple charcoal and at least 40% alcohol should qualify as Tennessee whisky.

Unsurprisingly, that is how the 148-year-old Jack Daniel's makes its own bourbon-style whisky.

The distiller, owned by Brown-Forman, was able to push that standard through the Tennessee general assembly last year before competitors could mount resistance.

Diageo, whose George Dickel brand is the state's number two whisky – and is already made to the new official code – said Brown-Forman engineered the change through "misleading and deceptive political moves" that gives it an advantage.

Establishing the pro-Jack Daniel's definition amounts to "effectively reversing the flexibility that has been enjoyed for more than 130 years by Tennessee whisky distillers," said Guy Smith, Diageo executive vice-president for North America.

"Diageo is willing to consider a standard for Tennessee whisky," he said.

"However, it is imperative that standard be reflective of the collective input from Tennessee whiskey distillers large and small, not just from one oppressive company as is currently the case."

Unfair competitive advantage?

Jack Daniel's dominates the business from its headquarters in Lynchburg, just west of the Appalachians. It produced 11 million cases last year, compared with just 130,000 by George Dickel, located just a few kilometres away.

The fight is over principle, for one, but also over an economic issue that disadvantages especially the many smaller independent distilleries trying to make a mark in the spirits business.

The rule requiring the use of new barrels – rather than reusing them – can be a heavy cost, at hundreds of dollars each.

Phil Prichard, owner of Prichard's distillery, said the state law violates other laws against monopolies and gives Jack Daniel's an unfair competitive advantage.

"We have plenty of federal regulations that define our product type. But it is our choice how to combine those ingredients, how to manage the techniques that allow us to create those products," he said.

"The final arbiter of quality, those who will judge our quality best, are those who buy our products," he added.

Jack Daniel's says the move is not to protect its market power but instead to help the Tennessee whisky brand, in the same way that other famous drinks – such as champagne, cognac, and scotch whisky – are defined by strict production guidelines.

"Not any kind of sparkling wine can call itself champagne," said Jeff Arnett, the master distiller at Jack Daniel's.

By maintaining a production standard, he said, "champagne is held in a higher esteem as a higher quality product ... It does not mean that all champagnes will taste the same. It is the same for cognac or armagnac."

The new rules, he argued, will help small distillers.

"They don't mind being held to a higher standard. They don't want to create cheap products that would become synonymous with the state name," Arnett said.

The fight has brought the weight of two industry giants down on the capital of the southern state.

Brown-Forman – based in Louisville, Kentucky – distributes Finlandia vodka, Pepe Lopez Tequila, Canadian Mist, Southern Comfort and Early Times whiskies, and Korbel champagne.

Diageo is much larger – its brands include Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Baileys, Crown Royal and Guinness.

On Tuesday, the opponents of the Jack Daniel's standard scored a minor victory in the state's general assembly.

It decided to put the rule under study that would take input from the entire industry. But it stopped short of revoking the rule, which George Dickel and Diageo had demanded. – AFP, March 30, 2014.

Fine and delectable at Way Modern Chinois

A press of the "lift" button and the door opened to a dark interior brightened with spotlights, where a white floral centrepiece stood out and was reflected in the mirrors.

The restaurant has a contemporary and elegant decor, mostly in grey, black and white, with rosewood panels.

It's "Way Modern" as its name suggests, and I was told "way" in Mandarin also means "unique".The interior of Way Modern Chinois. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.The interior of Way Modern Chinois. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.

We were in a well-lit private room, all the better to see the food we were eating. Our expectations of fine, contemporary Chinese cuisine were slowly realised in the long afternoon spent there.

First we had the Snow Buns, then the Carrot Cake with XO Sauce, Shredded Duck Cheong Fun, Crab Roe Fried Rice, among other dishes.

The first and the last especially deserved applause for the chef. The Snow Buns had a cracked crispy crust from the baked custard topping that gave way to a soft inside, spilling out the sweet chicken char siu. This was delicious.

The yummy aroma of the Crab Roe Fried Rice filled the room as it was served.

The rice, the long grain basmati variety, had been fried with crabmeat and crab roe, and then topped with creamy crab roe that had been blended and cooked with butter and chopped spring onion. It was totally scrumptious.

The creamy crab roe reminded me of noodles smothered with this that I once had in a restaurant in Macau. Like this Crab Roe Rice, it was unforgettable.

Chef Louis Liu tells us he had used basmati rice as the grains wouldn't stick together while frying.

The chef, who is from Huizhou, Guangdong, has honed his skills at restaurants in Shanghai, and also at the Shangri-La Pudong. He has also served as dim sum chef at a dim sum chain in Malaysia.

Way Modern Chinois, which is pork-free, serves dim sum both at lunch and dinner.

The Snow Buns are part of this, as is the Shredded Duck Cheong Fun which had a smooth, sticky texture and which was bursting with the shredded roast duck with the light fragrance of mandarin peel.

I tasted crispy dried shrimps inside, too. The rice roll with duck was good even without dipping into the sweet sauce provided.

It's a dense carrot (or radish) cake you get here, packed with flavour even on its own. It's fried with XO sauce which already has dried shrimps, dried scallop strips, and dried chilli in it. Add fresh scallops and our Carrot Cake with XO Sauce was taken to another level.

The Salted Egg Chicken Strips tasted ordinary after what we had. This had strips of chicken coated with salted egg yolk and chilli and fried till almost crispy. I'm sure this would be addictive with a cold beer from the bar.Crispy Lion Fish. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.Crispy Lion Fish. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.

We moved on to Way's signature Waterless Chicken Soup, double-boiled kampung chicken without skin.

This is done without water added to the chicken, so that what we got was the pure essence of it, with just a little salt added. We revelled in the subtly sweet, almost complex taste of this and felt good.

The Crispy Lion Fish is a garoupa skilfully cut so that when it's deep fried it opens up like a lion's mane. It even has two blueberries as its eyes.

Waterless Chicken Soup. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.Waterless Chicken Soup. – The Malaysian Insider pic, March 29, 2014.The garoupa had been marinated with salt and black pepper before the deepfrying. The fish was crispy on the outside and moist and tender inside. A sweet and sour sauce was served with this. The fish was both delectable with the sauce as well as eaten on its own.

The menu reflects the owners' preference for deepfried food, and the Golden Tofu was one of these. Cubes of tofu were marinated with shrimp paste and deep fried, then finished with a chilli sauce.

The tofu was aromatic and flavourful, the crispy, spiced skin giving way to creamy smooth tofu.

Our vegetable dish was Hong Kong Choysam with Crispy Silver Fish, which was quite a nice combination, too.

Our desserts were Sweet Red Bean Roll, Musang King Durian Pancake and the Honey Osmanthus Pudding.

I loved the bite of the sticky, smooth red roll. The Honey Osmanthus Pudding had a little gin in it which was not really apparent but I liked its texture and floral scent.

I would have preferred more durian than cream in the Durian Pancake, which made its presence felt with its intense durian aroma.

The prices: The Golden Tofu is RM10, Waterless Chicken Soup RM58, Crab Roe Fried Rice RM42, Choysam with Crispy Silverfish RM20, Snow Buns RM10, Duck Cheong Fun RM17, Salted Egg with Chicken RM18,  Crispy Lion Fish RM59. Desserts are RM10 each, with the Durian Pancake RM14.

The portions are good for three or four people, and the prices seem reasonable in a restaurant of this class. – March 29, 2014.

Way Modern Chinois is at G.01 Work@Clearwater, Changkat Semantan, Damansara Heights, 50490 Kuala Lumpur. Tel: 03-2095 1118, 016-364 6596.

Bottas first F1 driver to get penalty points

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 09:05 AM PDT

March 30, 2014

Williams' Valtteri Bottas (pic) today became the first Formula One driver to pick up penalty points under a new driving licence-style system introduced this season.

The Finn was also handed a three place grid penalty for tomorrow's Malaysian Grand Prix after stewards ruled he impeded the Red Bull of Australian Daniel Ricciardo in a rain-hit qualifying session.

It was the second time in two races that Bottas had been handed a grid penalty, the one in the Australian season-opener resulting from a gearbox change, and he will start 18th at Sepang.

Under the new system, any driver collecting 12 penalty points in the space of a year will be given a one race ban.

The stewards ruled that Bottas had not paid attention to the approaching car and impeded Ricciardo through turns 14 and 15.

The Finn, who finished fifth in Melbourne after Ricciardo was disqualified from second, was disappointed with the decision: "I thought it would be OK and there would be no penalties," he said. – Reuters, Bottas first F1 driver to get penalty pointsMarch 29, 2014

Rooney double helps United lift Old Trafford gloom

Last season's champions have looked a pale imitation of the sides that bossed the Premier League under former manager Alex Ferguson, and have slumped to seventh on the back of poor home form that includes consecutive 3-0 defeats to bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Old Trafford crowd, many of whom booed a banner proclaiming 'Wrong One – Moyes Out' that was flown over the ground as the match started, had further cause to grumble when Ashley Westwood put Villa ahead with a 13th minute free-kick.

Rooney headed United level six minutes later before putting them ahead from the penalty spot just before halftime as he went fourth in the all-time Premier League scoring charts.

Christian Benteke missed two glorious chances to draw Villa level before Spaniard Juan Mata scored his first goal since his 37 million pound (US$61.56 million) move from Chelsea in January.

Mexican substitute Javier Hernandez rounded off the win in injury time as United moved to 54 points, nine off fourth-placed Arsenal in the final Champions Leaguespot.

The win was a much-needed boost ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final against holders Bayern Munich.

"I've been saying all the time I've been here, the crowd have been great, they've been terrific to me as well because at times we haven't done as well as we'd like," Moyes told BT Sport after the match.

"We didn't start the game well today once again, but I've got to say the crowd were brilliant, they were behind the team."

Early setback

Westwood provided an immediate setback when he curled in a perfectly-placed free-kick that keeper David De Gea could only help into the net, following Rafael's rash challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The goal was a wake-up call for the hosts, who drew level six minutes later when Shinji Kagawa found an unmarked Rooney in the box. The England striker headed home off the post for his 14th goal of the season.

Rooney and Kagawa continued to look lively, as did Mata, and while Villa posed a threat through Benteke and Westwood, the home trio combined to put United ahead just before the break.

Japanese international Kagawa threaded a ball through to Mata, who was cut down in the box by Leandro Bacuna, and Rooney gave Brad Guzan no chance from the penalty spot.

The goal took the 28-year-old's Premier League tally to 171, behind Alan Shearer (260), Andy Cole (187) and Thierry Henry (175).

"He's a top player, he's been great since the start of the season and anything I say I'd just be repeating myself," Moyes said of Rooney.

"I did say to him after the game that if you keep scoring two goals a game for us, that's going to give us a great chance of doing better."

Benteke missed a glorious chance to draw level soon after the restart when Westwood found him unmarked inside the six-yard box, but the Belgian failed to connect after cleverly bringing the ball down with his chest.

Five minutes later Benteke rose above Nemanja Vidic to meet a Marc Albrighton cross, but could not keep his header down.

Villa rued those misses when Mata scored, finishing from close range just before the hour after Marouane Fellaini held the ball up in the box, although Guzan denied Rooney a hat-trick.

Benteke missed a further opportunity before Hernandez added the final flourish, getting his foot on the end of Adnan Januzaj's enticing cross as United won their first league game at home since late January.

Leaders Chelsea were playing later at Crystal Palace while Arsenal looked to keep their slim title hopes alive in the late kick-off at the Emirates against third-placed Manchester City. – Reuters, March 29, 2014

Lights off for Earth Hour’s crowdfunding call

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 07:27 AM PDT

March 29, 2014

Malaysians observe a minute of silence in tribute to the missing passengers and crew on MH370 during this evening’s Earth Hour at Publika in Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, March 29, 2014Malaysians observe a minute of silence in tribute to the missing passengers and crew on MH370 during this evening's Earth Hour at Publika in Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, March 29, 2014Lights went off in thousands of cities and towns across the world today for the annual Earth Hour campaign, which is aiming to raise money via the internet for local environmental projects.

The Singapore-based campaign by conservation group WWF was boosted by Hollywood star power, with "The Amazing Spiderman-2" stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx leading ceremonies at the city-state's Marina Bay district.

Comic-book hero Spiderman is this year's "ambassador" for Earth Hour, which was launched in Sydney in 2007.

Sydney's Opera House and Harbour Bridge were among the first landmarks around the world to dim their lights for 60 minutes during today's event.

An estimated 7,000 cities and towns from New Zealand to New York are taking part.

Hong Kong's stunning waterfront skyline was unrecognisable this evening, with the city's tallest skyscraper, the International Commerce Centre, stripped of the vast light show usually wrapped around its 118 stories.

Blazing neon signs advertising some of the world's largest brands were shut off, leaving the view of the heavily vertical southern Chinese city peppered only with tiny lights from buildings' interiors.

Earth Hour partnered with payments giant PayPal to allow donors to contribute to specific projects from Russia and India to Canada and Indonesia, using Asian fundraising site Crowdonomic.

Earth Hour chief executive Andy Ridley said before the lights went off in Singapore that the event had moved beyond symbolism to concrete action.

"If you want to get real social change you need to have symbolism," he told AFP.

"We are seeing some really big outcomes."

Projects under the "Earth Hour Blue" crowdfunding scheme – which aim to raise more than US$650,000 in total – include a turtle centre in Italy and funding for forest rangers in Indonesia.

The event is being marked in more than 150 countries, organisers said, estimating that thousands of cities and towns would have taken part by the time the ceremonies began in Singapore.

The projects seeking crowdfunding include a US$24,000 effort in the Philippines to bring fibreglass boat technology to coastal communities affected by super typhoon Haiyan in November last year.

In Nepal, US$100,000 is being sought for a programme called "A Flame Called Hope" to provide access to biogas energy for 150 households in the Terai region, reducing the need for wood as fuel and helping protect the habitat of endangered wildlife, according to the Earth Hour website.

Spiderman-2 star Garfield told journalists that he was a personal supporter of the Nepal project.

"What they are doing is turning waste into energy, it's like the cycle of life right there, if only everyone knew how simple it was," he said.

Earth Hour will see other landmarks including the Empire State Building in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Kremlin in Moscow switch off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30pm local time today. – AFP, March 29, 2014

Cholesterol drugs aid erectile function, says study

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 05:12 AM PDT

March 29, 2014

Men with erectile dysfunction may see improvements in their sexual ability while taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, according to research out today.

In the study presented at the American College of Cardiology conference, experts performed a meta-analysis on 11 previous randomized, controlled studies on erectile dysfunction and statins.

In them, men answered survey questions that scored their sexual ability on a five-point scale.

Among men who had high cholesterol and erectile dysfunction – and who were taking statins – there was a statistically significant increase in erectile function, amounting to a 24.3% boost in their self-reported scores.

"The increase in erectile function scores with statins was approximately one-third to one-half of what has been reported with drugs like Viagra, Cialis or Levitra," said John Kostis, director of the

Cardiovascular Institute and associate dean for Cardiovascular Research at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

"It was larger than the reported effect of lifestyle modification," said Kostis, who was the lead investigator on the study.

The drugs may help erectile function by coaxing blood vessels into dilating properly and improving blood flow to the penis.

While statins are not recommended as a primary treatment for erectile dysfunction in patients with healthy cholesterol levels, the added benefit may encourage more men who need statins to take them.

However, he added that statins can also be a "double-edged sword," since previous research has shown they can decrease testosterone, which cuts back on sexual drive and energy.

The benefits of statins prevailed over the side effects in 10 of 11 studies reviewed, he said.

As many as 30 million men in the United States are believed to suffer from erectile dysfunction, which is more common in men over 40 and can be caused by heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, depression and stress. – AFP, March 29, 2014

Salleh gesa Putrajaya pertimbang tambah royalti minyak

Posted: 29 Mar 2014 02:59 AM PDT

March 29, 2014

– Bernama, 29 Mac, 2014.

# Pray for Memali, too

Posted: 28 Mar 2014 05:09 PM PDT

March 29, 2014

Abdar Rahman Koya is at the end of his thirties, and considers himself to have all the qualities of an ordinary Malaysian, a practising Muslim, and an incorrigible cynic.

That it took Tun Musa Hitam 29 years to reveal that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in the country when the Kampung Memali massacre took place in November 1985 speaks volumes about his loyalty to the former prime minister, as was the filial loyalty publicly expressed by another Dr Mahathir deputy about a decade later.

With such a loyalty, Malaysians can be assured that no "Deep Throats" can let out official regime secrets, and that may be worrying to relatives of passengers on board MAS's flight 370, who are convinced that there is more to the disappearance of the jet than what has been officially told by the Malaysian government.

Musa's silence means he was equally complicit in the Memali killings and he cannot now turn around to say his hands are clean.

Things would have been different had he come clean earlier and spilled the beans as soon as he was forced to resign. It is for this reason there was immense public sympathy for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after his sacking, despite the fact that he had been the flesh and blood of a party responsible for so much mess that we see today.

Musa's revelation also fulfils a prediction by the late president of PAS, Fadhil Noor, who, amid the propaganda which followed the Memali incident, said: "They may be able to cover up history as it occurred today, but they will not be able to continue covering it up 10, 20 or 30 years from now."

I remember it was the long school break when the incident took place on November 20, 1985. I clearly recall the Memali killings being on the news and splashed on front pages.

When school reopened, teachers were parading the official version to us primary school kids, blaming the criminals who were armed to the teeth with parang and sticks, who had attacked a hapless paramilitary police force armed with M16 rifles and military vehicles, who came with good tidings of the Internal Security Act (ISA).

On November 21, 1985, news splashed across the Umno-owned newspapers that 14 "criminals" had died in clashes with the police.

No one bothered to ask who the criminals were. No one really knew what had happened. How could they, when there was no Internet or portals or social media.

I regard the villagers gunned down in Memali as martyrs, and the rest were heroes, all deserving the highest human rights award for their sacrifices.

Here were sarong-clad and slipper-wearing people who had abandoned their daily lives on that November morning, standing up and being prepared to die against one of the most cruel laws, long before there was any well-coordinated and well-financed human rights movement in the country.

It is perhaps another reflection of the sad state of journalism in the country that there has been no attempt, barring some political party-inspired propaganda, to tell a sympathetic story of Memali, with the exception of a brilliantly written series of articles by Dina Zaman and published by The Malaysian Insider in 2012, telling the tale not from the perspective of the "victors".

Sadly, our politicians have failed to give Memali the importance it deserves in the struggle for justice.

In some countries, such an incident would have seen mock trials and even petitions at the international courts, and would remain etched in the nation's psyche, the people of Memali had none of those.

I get worked up every time the Kampung Memali incident is mentioned, especially after my visit there in 1999. It was an impromptu stopover during a nationwide road trip that we – four jobless varsity buddies looking for adventure before biting the dust few years later –  undertook in 1999.

I remember one Pak Long, who came to greet us as we sat at a stall just upon entering the village, and started to chronicle that fateful day, like a tourist guide repeating a historical anecdote to explain a monument.

"The police had surrounded the whole village by then. Motorists to and from Memali were stopped and their names taken. Ustaz Ibrahim had just finished delivering his daily lecture – kuliah Subuh (lecture after pre-dawn prayers)," he said.

"On that day, the police numbered around 4,000. They were heavily armed and dangerous. They were acting on orders from Mahathir," he said.

It was Ibrahim Mahmood to whom he referred, the man the government had accused of spreading deviant teachings, and who the villagers had been ready to defend until their last drop of blood – which they did.

"The whole of Memali was almost deserted. There was no one to arrange a proper burial for those killed," he recalled on the day after the incident.

There was nothing extraordinary about Ibrahim. He was no Ayatollah whose words shook the stockmarkets.

Like many local Muslim scholars of his time, he had studied at the University of Tripoli, and also in India and at al-Azhar in Cairo.

Upon his return, he had even appeared on RTM, the government's television channel, to give talks on Islam.

But his close association with PAS worried Mahathir's Umno so much that its outfit, the Islamic Religious Department, started making allegations of "deviation" against him. Nothing extraordinary there either.

Many times, police officers attempted to arrest him, but he refused to surrender, and demanded to know his crime. It was then that the government decided to move a battalion of paramilitary police to arrest one man under the ISA.

For this, 14 villagers paid with their lives, and an entire population of the village was carted away in police trucks, including women and children.

Dr Mahathir, who we're now told was in the country and not China as previously believed, had then said that the villagers "had resisted arrest which was a crime".

Clearly, the only "crime" the government could pin on Ibrahim is committed after the police were sent in.

Ibrahim and the people of Memali, with their worldview, may not exactly look like candidates for some legion of honour from some former colonial power whose past is tainted with atrocities.

They are what the urbanites would call simple kampung folk, who refused to be cowed by the threats of force against their leader.

They had no clue that what they had done was to uphold universal principles of justice endorsed by international bodies – that there can be no detention without trial and that one cannot be held for one's views.

The story of Memali should not be forgotten by Malaysians of all creeds. It should be told to the younger generation.

Perhaps, Musa's revelation may not be too late, but timely, so that three decades later, Malaysians who were not born or were too young to remember, will know that little has changed in the way the government works. – March 29, 2014.

"Tak apalah, ranking bukan penting pun," kata kebanyakan orang kita.

Cuba kita lihat skema pendidikan negara kita.

– 29 Mac, 2014.
