Turning up the heat at Hong Kong Li Garden

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 04:25 PM PST

The Onion Eggplant with Soya Sauce is one awesome dish. — Pictures by Eu Hooi Khaw

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 — It was a little early for lunch at Hong Kong Li Garden at Plaza Low Yat but that did not stop our friend ST from wolfing down two bowls of rice. The reason was the very spicy and appetising dishes that had been ordered for us.

There was the Deepfried Chicken with Chilli, Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce and the Kai Lan in Spicy Sauce. A brave little girl ate the food with us, tried the kai lan fried with dried chillies and drank a lot of water after that. I liked how green and crunchy the vegetables were, the fat bulbs of fried garlic in it, and the dried chillies.

Crunch, hot and spicy... the Deepfried Chicken with Chilli.

The Deepfried Chicken with Chilli was pieces of chicken thigh meat seasoned with chilli powder and deepfried, with garlic and oats added. So you had these lethal looking crispy grains on top, and they delivered a flavourful punch. The chicken pieces were juicy at the bite, and they were so good eaten on their own or with rice, sprinkling the chilli-flavoured oats and garlic on top of it.

The little girl did not complain about the Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce which was a blend of chilli sauce, oyster sauce and a little curry powder. The deepfried prawns had been tossed in this sauce that was a little sweet, with a hint of spices, and the aroma of fried curry leaves. They were mildly hot.

The Mongolian Pork Ribs were delicious with its sticky, creamy sauce with a hint of sweetness and the heat of black pepper in them. They were not really ribs but tender boneless meat from the yok ngan or back rib that had been dipped in a thin batter, deepfried and finished with the sauce. Butter, not milk, had been used to cook the sauce, with tomato and a little chilli sauce added.

The Cashewnut Broth is a must-try dessert.

I thought the Onion Eggplant with Soya Sauce was awesome. Usually something that appears simple to make is hard to get right. The chef had deepfried chunks of eggplant, doused in boiling water, drained and tossed it in oil and soya sauce in the wok. Fried onions and garlic were liberally sprinkled on it. The eggplant was naturally sweet and had a subtle salty lift from soya sauce, with crunchy bits of onion and garlic.

Claypot Fish Belly with Chilli Salt was a wholesome dish of meaty and smooth slices of fried fish belly, egg tofu, mushrooms and carrot brought together in soya-oyster sauce. It's food you would love to eat every day at home.

I was persuaded to try a "cham" — coffee and tea mix with milk. "We have tweaked this a bit, and the tea is very fragrant," said Ken Tan, owner of the restaurant. Truly the aroma of the tea rose up as you sipped and you could catch the whiff of coffee too. I could have drunk another cup of this.

Sauteed Prawns with Special Sauce... yummy.

Dessert was an unusual Cashewnut Broth. Unlike a black sesame broth or chee mah woo, which has rice flour added to it, this was pure cashewnuts, deepfried and blended. The foamy, aromatic broth was rich and lightly creamy, with just enough sugar added. I loved it.

Other dishes on the menu include a Stirfried Sliced Pork with Spicy Sauce (from spicy bean paste), Seafood Fried Rice Cake which is immensely popular here, Squid Tentacles Coated with Salted Egg, Deepfried Pork Ribs with Apple Jam, Sauteed Beef with Black Bean Sauce and Deepfried Eggplant with Chicken Floss. There are noodle dishes such as the Fried Hor Fun Teochew Style and Egg Noodles with a Seafood Sauce. Eating here is inexpensive — the meat dishes are from RM16 to RM18; the fried rice cake is only from RM10.90 to RM13.

For dessert again, Li Garden does things differently, especially in the Chestnut Red Bean Broth. I would want to try this next.

Hong Kong Li Garden is located at UG-001 and UG-002 Plaza Low Yat, 7 Jalan Bintang, off Jalan Bukit Bintang (Tel: 03-2144-7088).

Hong Kong Li Garden has lots of surprises in store for the diner.

I’m in Moscow for the ballet not football says Capello

MOSCOW, Nov 26 — England manager Fabio Capello denied yesterday that his trip to Moscow this week had anything to do with football after local media reported he had arrived in the capital to negotiate a contract with wealthy Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala.

"I came to Moscow to see the ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre, not for football," Capello, whose contract with the English FA expires after the Euro 2012 finals, told Russian media.

"I was invited here and just couldn't turn it down," added the Italian, who was pictured with his wife Laura at the lobby of a posh hotel in the centre of Moscow yesterday evening.

It was widely reported in the Russian media that Capello came to Moscow on Thursday to negotiate with Anzhi's billionaire owner Suleiman Kerimov over the possibility of becoming coach of the big-spending club from the volatile North Caucasus region.

Brazilian Roberto Carlos, who was named Anzhi's joint coach in September after joining them earlier in the year as a player, said the club was targeting several high-profile coaches, including Capello and former Russia boss Guus Hiddink.

Anzhi officials were unavailable for comment yesterday. — Reuters

Spain roundup: Real and Barca depleted for weekend action

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 07:44 AM PST

MADRID, Nov 25 ― Brief news from La Liga ahead of this weekend's matches (times GMT):

* Leaders Real Madrid and champions Barcelona, three points behind their great rivals in second, are both missing key players for tomorrow's games in the Spanish capital against Atletico Madrid and Getafe respectively.

Real's Brazil playmaker Kaka, Portugal centre back Ricardo Carvalho and Spain fullback Alvaro Arbeloa have not recovered from injury and will miss the derby at the Bernabeu (1900).

Barca playmaker Andres Iniesta, who sat out Wednesday's 3-2 Champions League win at AC Milan with a thigh problem, has not been included in the squad for the late kickoff at Getafe's Coliseum stadium (2100).

* Real coach Jose Mourinho marked Xabi Alonso's 30th birthday today by underlining the importance of the Spain midfielder to the team.

"I don't want to say that he is irreplaceable because I don't want to go to such an extreme," the Portuguese said at a news conference.

"He is a man who provides balance," the former Inter Milan and Chelsea manager added. "He feels strong and often the biological age is not what's important."

* Atletico, who have not beaten Real since 1999, are in ninth after an erratic start to their campaign under new coach Gregorio Manzano and Mourinho said Madrid's second club had no chance of winning the La Liga title.

"But with the squad they have they should be fighting for a Champions League qualification place and with more working time maybe in the future they can challenge for the title," he said.

"Great squads can be turned into great teams and tomorrow I expect a good team."

* Atletico will be without their new striker Radamel Falcao tomorrow after the Colombian lost his fitness battle and was left out of Manzano's squad.

Falcao's absence means Spain under-21 international Adrian will likely play up front, with Argentine forward Eduardo Salvio in support.

Manzano said Atletico would be looking to avoid the mistakes they made in September's 5-0 drubbing at Barca.

"Obviously we are going to play a more closed game, without the freedom of space that characterises our usual system and that led to defensive errors that we have to avoid tomorrow," he told a news conference.

"We do not want an open match because Madrid have tremendous counter-attacking ability."

* Barca coach Pep Guardiola said the squad were missing his assistant Tito Vilanova, who underwent successful surgery on his saliva glands this week and will be laid low for about a month.

"We are noticing his absence in every sense of the word," Guardiola told a news conference today. "He is a close friend of mine and at the same time we miss him a lot because he makes up for what I lack when I take charge of the team."

* Third-placed Valencia, four points behind Barca after their 3-2 defeat at home to Real last weekend, also play in Madrid tomorrow, with a trip to Rayo Vallecano (1700).

Unai Emery's side are on cloud nine after thrashing Racing Genk 7-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday, with Roberto Soldado netting a hat-trick, and their former striker Juan Sanchez was among those praising the club captain.

"He (Soldado) is on a great run and is one of the best goalscorers around at the moment," Sanchez was quoted as saying in today's edition of As newspaper.

* Fourth-placed Levante, who have lost three straight games since climbing to the top of the standings for the first time in their 102-year existence last month, host Sporting Gijon on Sunday (1500), before sixth-placed Sevilla, without a win in five matches, play at Real Zaragoza (2030). ― Reuters

Nicole gives Hamilton a boost for Brazil

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 01:09 AM PST

SAO PAULO, Nov 25 ― Lewis Hamilton said he was ready for a new beginning in Brazil at the end of the Formula One season and spoke yesterday of his hope of re-kindling his romance with singer Nicole Scherzinger.

The McLaren driver arrived at the Interlagos circuit, where he won his 2008 title, after spending time with his ex-girlfriend in Los Angeles.

Photographs were published in the media amid speculation about their seemingly negative body language but Hamilton, wearing a long set of black rosary beads and sparkling crucifix given to him by the former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman (picture), told British reporters that was far from the case.

"What you didn't see is that we had a really good week. a couple of really nice lunches together," said the devout Catholic.

"We had a really nice dinner together. It's very early days and we still have very strong feelings for one another and I still love her very much. So who knows? Maybe we will be together in the future."

Hamilton's on-off romance has become a subject of discussion even in Formula One circles usually more interested in gear ratios than showbiz gossip because of the effect his private life apppears to have had on his track form.

The 26-year-old has endured a season of crashes and controversies, repeatedly hauled before stewards and clashing with Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa as if magnetically attracted.

He has won three races however, including the most recent in Abu Dhabi, but the break in California appeared to have given him more of a boost.

Wise friend

"I have not really thought about the last victory since the Wednesday afterwards," he said. "I was just back in the simulator and thinking about this race.

"But I've had a few good really positive days since then which have meant more to me than the race win. So I've got a lot of positive energy at the moment."

Despite being level on three wins each ahead of Brazil, Hamilton is sure to end the year behind Jenson Button ― the first time he has been beaten by a team mate over the course of a season in his motor racing career.

He brushed that off and focused on the positives.

"I feel, coming into this weekend, that this is the beginning of the future," said the Briton.

"I feel the last race was the end, hopefully, and this is almost like the first race if the season ― or at least this is the beginning of what's to come. My goal this weekend is to start on the right foot."

"This season has been a year of growth," he declared.

"I was talking to a friend just recently who is very wise and I said that it's been a very difficult year. He said 'It's not been a difficult year, it's been a year of growth.'

Hamilton said that was "one of the most positive things that I have learned this year. It really has been a year where I've just grown and I've learned a lot and can take it to next year.

"I think in the future I'll look back on this season and smile and say that I needed that."

Apart from the good memories of Interlagos, Sao Paulo is also the home town of his idol, the late triple champion Ayrton Senna.

Hamilton will be wearing a special helmet this weekend incorporating Senna's colours and logo that will be auctioned off afterwards by the charitable foundation run by the Brazilian's sister Viviane. ― Reuters

Disney comes to YouTube

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 06:46 PM PST

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 25 — Disney films were available for rent on YouTube on Wednesday in the latest bid by the Google-owned website to transform into an online stage for the gamut of digital video content.

The first of hundreds of films from Disney studios including Pixar and DreamWorks joined the array of Hollywood titles that can be viewed as streaming rentals at youtube.com/movies.

Movies available for rent include "Alice in Wonderland" and all four films in the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, according to YouTube movies and television marketing manager Minjae Ormes.

"Even more of the great Disney classics and new releases will be added in weeks to come, including our YouTube Movie Extras with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews, and more," Ormes promised in a blog post.

Earlier this month, YouTube and The Walt Disney Co said they were teaming up to produce an original video series and feature "family-friendly" Disney programming on the popular video-sharing site.

Disney Interactive and YouTube said the programming will be available on Disney.com and on YouTube and the "complementary online video destinations" will launch in early 2012.

"Disney Interactive will produce and program the co-branded video destinations for both Disney.com and YouTube, providing a family-friendly experience for viewers across both platforms," Disney and YouTube said.

The programming will include original video from Disney, Disney Interactive original series, some Disney Channel programming and content created by Disney users.

The first project will launch in February and will be an original video series based on Disney's mobile game "Where's My Water?"

YouTube, which Google bought for US$1.65 billion (RM5.1 billion) in 2006, has been gradually adding professional content in an effort to generate revenue and announced last month that it is adding about 100 channels of original programming.

YouTube remains the top online destination for amateur video, but it faces stiff competition when it comes to professional content from services such as Apple's iTunes, Hulu and Netflix. — AFP-Relaxnews

Top 10 reasons to oppose the Peaceful Assembly Bill

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 04:22 PM PST

NOV 25 — I disagree with the Peaceful Assembly Bill which is being tabled in Parliament at the moment and I know that many sane Malaysians also disagree with it.

There's been (and will be) tons of people writing and voicing their thoughts on the matter and here's my list of top 10 reasons why I disagree with it:

1. The right for people to assemble is the right to freedom of speech and expression. If you limit and restrict that right, then you are denying democracy.

2. Myanmar just passed a law to allow public protests. I repeat — Myanmar just passed a law to allow public protests.

3. Prime Minister Najib Razak says this new law will be "revolutionary." Sure! It's as revolutionary as Iran's Revolutionary Guards!

4. MITI Deputy Minister Mukhriz Mahathir says that street protests portray the country as having bad governance. Great! Bar the protests instead of addressing the bad governance!

5. Aside from the rules that are obviously stated in the Bill, everything else falls under the "discretion" of the police or the home minister. How conveniently ambiguous.

6. The peaceful assembly law is unconstitutional since protests are a form of expression.

7. The Bill disallows anyone under 21 years of age from participating in assemblies. I didn't know young people had less human rights.

8. The Peaceful Assembly Bill is actually even more restrictive than the current law, which goes against what was promised by the prime minister in September during his Malaysia Day speech.

9. One of the reasons of protests and demonstrations is to create disruption (but peaceful disruption!) in order to bring attention to issues. Disallowing this disruption goes against the principle of protests and demonstrations.

10. As a member of the Malaysian rakyat, I was not asked my opinion about the Bill. Were you?

We, as Malaysians, need to make sure our voice is heard when it comes to this matter because if we don't, then our voice will be stifled forever by this Bill.

Razali Ibrahim, janganlah bersikap seperti anak kecil

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 04:06 PM PST

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 02:39 AM PST

NFC: Wanita PKR ulangi gesaan Shahrizat lepas jawatan

Posted: 25 Nov 2011 02:05 AM PST

"Demi menjaga maruah wanita, Shahrizat perlu meletak jawatan kerana beliau sendiri seorang wanita," katanya lagi.
