Ancelotti wishes to extend PSG contract

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:33 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

Paris St Germain's coach Carlo Ancelotti and player Maxwell (top) arrive for a news conference at Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, April 9, 2013. — Reuters picPARIS, April 12 — Carlo Ancelotti says he wants to stay at Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain next season as the club close in on their first French league title since 1994.

"I have decided that I want to stay," Ancelotti, whose contract ends in June but is due to be automatically renewed for one year if the club finish in the top three, told a news conference today.

"Things are very clear. The work I have been doing will be judged at the end of the season. If everybody is happy I will be happy to stay. Then we will be able to extend the adventure here."

Last month, club president Nasser al Khelaifi said he wished Ancelotti and sports director Leonardo would stay next season.

Ancelotti took over from Antoine Kombouare in December 2011 as PSG finished second in the top flight last season.

This term they have 64 points with seven games left and lead Olympique Marseille by seven points. PSG also reached the Champions League quarter-finals but were eliminated by favourites Barcelona 3-3 on aggregate. — Reuters

Bayern Munich to face Barca in semis, Real versus Dortmund

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:10 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

FC Bayern Munich former player Bixente Lizarazu (R) talks next to FC Barcelona Director of Professional Football Andoni Zubizarreta during the draw for the Champions League semi-finals matches at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, April 12, 2013.— Reuters picNYON, Switzerland, April 12 — Barcelona, chasing their third title in five years, will face treble-chasing Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals while Borussia Dortmund were drawn against Real Madrid for the second time in this season's competition.

The draw ensured bitter local rivalries would not be renewed for the time being, although it opened up the possibilities of an all German final or a Real-Barca clash at Wembley.

A Bayern-Real meeting would also have been potentially explosive as there is a long history of stormy encounters between them.

The German pair, whose duel for domestic supremacy has sparked some acrimonious comments off the pitch, were glad to have avoided each other.

"We are happy with this draw, not because we think it's an easy one, but because the Champions League is an international competition and we wanted an international game rather than a national tie against Bayern," said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Bayern winger Arjen Robben said before the draw: "We'd like to be kept apart from Dortmund, but you don't have a choice in these things."

The German sides will be at home in the first legs in two weeks' time with the return games one week later.

Bayern and Barcelona have surprisingly met just six times in European competition with only one win for the Catalans.

Barcelona's 4-0 thrashing at the Nou Camp in the Champions League quarter-final in 2008/09 is still fresh in the mind of Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"Barcelona are the benchmark for me in Europe," he said. "They have won the Champions League more than any other team in the recent years.

"They are the best team in Europe at the moment, with fantastic attacking potential. We played them in 2009 and received a real thumping.

"I remember that game well and I don't really like to think about it, because it was quite painful to watch. However, it's a wonderful opportunity to show that we have improved a lot since then. "

However, Bayern are Europe's in-form team, having already won the Bundesliga with six matches to spare and they demolished Serie A champions Juventus 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals.

Dortmund had the upper hand in their group stage meetings with Real Madrid, drawing 2-2 at the Bernabeu and winning 2-1 at home.

"We have already played them twice this season and we were unable to beat them," said former Real Madrid Emilio Butragueno, now a club director.

"But we hope this time it will be different and we can get through to the final." — Reuters

She & Him, Wolf Alice most blogged artist

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:57 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

LOS ANGELES, April 12 — Today, March 12, She & Him, the male/female folk duo fronted by Zooey Deschanel, re-enters the Hype Machine's most blogged artists chart in fifth position and London group Wolf Alice re-enters in seventh position.

Indie outfit She & Him, which consists of American actress and singer/songwriter Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward, is causing a stir in the indie music blogs after dropping latest single "I Could've Been Your Girl." The single was described as "reminiscent of the Smiths, and Zooey's romantic crooning is like a heartbroken, young female Morrissey" by Audiocred, while The 405 writes "Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward seem to be the perfect match again here, coupling saccharine vocals with upbeat 60s production to decorate unrequited love and heart ache in joy and a coy playfulness."

The forthcoming album from She & Him, "Volume 3," drops on May 7.

Also causing a stir in the Hype Machine's most blogged rtists chart is London outfit Wolf Alice, which has just dropped latest track "Bros." The track, which drops in physical format on May 20 via Chess Club, was described as "a luscious post punk anthem — just enough sentimental sprinkles to warm up the heart" by Prefixmag while Pigeons and Planes states "Ellie Roswell adds some tenderness to the mix, delivering an impressively touching, sentimental vocal performance." — AFP/Relaxnews

The end of the working week is also being celebrated by Spanish speakers.

Psy, the South Korean recording artist who swept all before him with his single "Gangnam Style," will be hoping to repeat that success with "Gentleman," which will be performed live for the first time at a concert in Seoul tomorrow.

The concert will be streamed live via YouTube on April 13 at 11:30 am local time (KST) and will be available to watch on YouTube for 24 hours after the live broadcast; see youtube.com/officialpsy for more information.

The new single dropped on April 11 and can be found on YouTube (with English subtitles) at youtube.com/watch?&v=uzKLGc0MIIU. Twitter users are discussing the single and comparing it, often unfavorably, to "Gangnam Style," causing Psy's previous hit to trend in seventh position.

Twitter user The Girl Who Waited wrote "Gentleman sounds too much like Gangnam Style. I don't think it will be as big as Gangnam but we will see..," Lyla Doyle wrote "Psy's new song is no Gangnam Style, but I do like it" and Andy Farthing wrote "It's like Gangnam Style, only worse somehow. Quite an achievement."

Elsewhere on Twitter microbloggers are celebrating the traditional end of the workweek by trending the Spanish phrase "Feliz Viernes," or "Happy Friday," in sixth place. — AFP/Relaxnews

Japanese fish survive 5,000-mile trip across Pacific in tsunami boat

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 08:10 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

A striped beakfish is held above a bait box aboard a 20-foot-long Japanese boat that washed ashore recently at Long Beach, Washington. — AFP picSEATTLE, April 12 — Scientists are baffled as to how a group of small fish native to Japan survived a journey across the Pacific after they were found on a boat swept away by the 2011 tsunami and washed up last month on the coast of Washington state.

The batch of striped beak fish — five in all — were discovered submerged in the hold of the 20-foot-long fishing skiff, dubbed the Sai-shou-maru, on Long Beach in southwestern Washington.

The vessel, found beached right-side-up, was confirmed this week to have originated from the region of northern Japan devastated in the immense tidal surge generated by the March 2011 Fukushima earthquake.

Other boats carried away by the tsunami have previously washed up along the US Pacific Northwest and Alaska, as have chunks of piers and large quantities of other debris. But the fish found aboard the Sai-shou-maru are the first vertebrates — animals with backbones — known to have made the voyage.

Marine biologists studying the phenomenon are puzzled over precisely how striped beak fish, natural denizens of warmer, shallow southern Japanese waters, ended up as live stowaways in the well of the boat, and how they endured a two-year journey across the ocean.

"It is quite remarkable," Curt Hart, a spokesman for the Washington state Department of Ecology, told Reuters. "Everyone is very amazed that these fish survived for two years in that hold."

The fish were apparently swept up with the skiff as it was washed down the coast of Japan and out into the Pacific.

Scientists surmise that the fish made their home beneath the boat for much of the trip as it drifted upside down and partially submerged, feeding on other organisms that became encrusted or otherwise attached to the inverted vessel. Then they might have been scooped up into the skiff's hold when wind or waves righted the vessel, Hart said.

NOURISHMENT MYSTERY

The middle of the Pacific is far less rich in nutrients than coastal waters, raising questions of how the fish found enough food to survive the trip, said Jeff Adams, an expert at Washington Sea Grant, an agency supporting marine research.

The 6-inch-long striped beak fish, named for their protruding mouths and black-and-white striped markings, were the most surprising of an estimated 30 to 50 species of marine organisms that hitchhiked across the Pacific with the skiff.

Other stowaways included various types of algae, anemones, crabs, marine worms and shellfish.

Many were believed to be non-native species, and all were treated as potentially invasive — capable of displacing native organisms and disrupting the natural ecological balance if allowed to escape into the environment and propagate.

As a precaution, state officials swiftly removed the Sai-shou-maru from the shoreline before samples of organisms were collected for study, and the boat was scraped and steam-cleaned, Hart said.

Four of the fish found alive in the boat on March 22 have since died, and the lone surviving specimen has been moved to an aquarium in Seaside, Oregon.

The Sai-shou-maru is not the only Noah's ark of potential invasive species carried to the US West Coast by the tsunami. Several more Japanese boats have washed ashore since last year in Washington, Oregon and California, and a fishing vessel found drifting off Alaska was scuttled by the Coast Guard.

Dozens of non-native and potentially invasive species — more than hitched a ride aboard the Sai-shou-maru — were previously found attached to two large hunks of piers that washed up, one in Oregon and one in Washington, Hart said. — Reuters

Austerity-hit London sex workers put lives at risk-study

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 07:23 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

LONDON, April 12 — Sex workers in London are being forced to slash prices they charge clients because of the impact of the recession on the British economy and an influx of foreign competition, putting themselves at greater risk of attack, according to a report.

A study reported that sex workers said they were being forced to charge 50 per cent less now than they had done a few years ago as they coped with the impact of the struggling economy like the rest of Britain. — AFP picThe study by the Westminster City Council, the local authority which covers much of central London, said sex workers reported they were being forced to charge 50 per cent less now than they had done a few years ago as they coped with the impact of the struggling economy like the rest of Britain.

That meant sex workers, who often worked alone, were accepting clients who appeared more dangerous, putting them at risk of rape, sexual assault, physical abuse and robbery.

"Falling demand and an increase in those selling sex has resulted in a collapse in prices, with female sex workers in particular taking more risks," said Councillor Ian Rowley, chairman of Westminster's Sex Worker task group.

"As a result the risk of violence has increased substantially."

Westminster covers Soho and Paddington, two districts long associated with the sex trade. The report said exact figures were hard to gauge but estimated there were 30 to 40 prostitutes working on the street in Paddington with up to 100 known brothels in Westminster, the highest number in London.

The number of women selling sex on their own off-street had increased considerably in the last few years, with the majority hailing from Eastern Europe, South America, particularly Brazil, and South East Asia, especially China and Thailand, it added.

"In our interviews with sex workers, they reported a 50 per cent reduction in prices over the last few years," the study said. "This means that many sex workers are selling sex in more risky environments in order to make enough money, putting them at more risk of violence."

The report said the women working in "walk-up" brothels earned from about 20 pounds (RM715) an hour, seeing six clients in one shift, while those in "mid-tier" establishments, often women working on their own advertising via the internet or telephone cards, would earn up to 200 pounds per hour.

In 2011, The English Collective of Prostitutes (ECP), a welfare body for sex workers, said desperate British students were turning to sex work to help make ends meet. — Reuters

Hadi: Video lucah babitkan pemimpin kanan PAS satu fitnah

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 03:22 AM PDT

April 12, 2013

— Bernama

No votes for racists

April 12, 2013

Zan Azlee is a documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, New Media practitioner and lecturer. He runs Fat Bidin Media www.fatbidin.com

APRIL 12 ― I turn to my right, and I see two Malaysians. Their names are Cherish Leow and Cynthia Ng. I look further down to the left; I see another Malaysian. His name is Thinesh Kumar. This is my workplace.

I look to my left, I see four Malaysians. They are the Lau family. I look further ahead and I see another Malaysian. His name is Steven Tan. This is my residential area.

I look to my right, I see a Malaysian. Her name is Ang Swee Poh. I look further down to the right, I see another Malaysian. His name is Ganesh Selvacumarasamy. This is my family.

I look to my left, I see a Malaysian. Her name is Jasmine Abu Bakar. I look in my arms, I see a Malaysian. Her name is Athena Azlee. These are my wife and daughter.

Then I read in the news and see prominent Malaysians endorse and encourage racial politics, in particular, one former Inspector-General of Police.

He says that racial politics is relevant to our society because the different races need to be able to share power so as to have a stable and peaceful country.

Bullshit! I say it's just a divide-and-conquer strategy to ensure certain people get the power. What do you think? Could my humble opinion actually be right?

Today, I walked through my constituency just to see for myself the goings-on of the political machinery this general election season and to get a feel of the voters' sentiments.

At a small warong, an Umno member called me over for a chat after he saw me conversing with the warong's owner about the candidates that will most likely be fielded in the area.

He decided to give me a ceramah, most probably thinking that he could influence me to vote a certain way. As for which way, I'm not particularly sure.

At one point in the conversation (or ceramah), this Umno member said to me:

"We dare not say to the Chinese, 'Keep quiet or go back to China!'. We dare not say to the Indians, 'Keep quiet or go back to India!' We dare not say this because as Malays, we are not united enough to have the strength to do so. And that is exactly what we need to build."

Then the warong owner, whom only then I find out happens to be an Umno member as well, interjected:

"The youth these days never experienced the racial tension that we experienced. For example, what happened during May 13, 1969. So that's why they don't see the importance of being united as a race!"

You know what? It's true youths like myself (yes, I consider myself young!) did not experience the kind of racial tension the older generation did. We are the post May 13, 1969 generation.

We are a generation that wants to experience our own experiences instead of what you did. We are the generation that sees and recognises each other as equal fellow Malaysians.

So, please, do not come to us and preach about the relevance of racial politics. And, definitely, please do not come and tell us to be scared of history instead of learning from it.

So, at the end of the day, that particular Umno member did, in fact, manage to influence me to vote a certain way.

The time is now

April 12, 2013

Michelle Ng wants to devote her life to speaking on behalf of those who do not have a voice. She also writes for CEKU at http://www.ceku.org.

APRIL 12 ― Elections are often the messiest times in a country's history. More so for a first-time voter like myself. There are simply too many articles to read, videos to watch and conversations to have before an informed decision can be reached.

I am careful about using the word "informed" ― it is a given that the voting populace in Malaysia falls either on the Barisan Nasional or the Pakatan Rakyat side, with a smaller number holding no allegiance to one side or the other. Groups who hold allegiances would undeniably have good reason for their decisions, but if I may say so myself, a strong allegiance contributes to a certain blindness, and such blindness can mar our ability to be better informed of the situation at hand.

Being "informed", however, is a spectrum of varying degrees, and we cannot possibly know everything and anything about Malaysian politics. It goes without saying Malaysia is an incredibly complex country.

We profess to be a multi-religious, multicultural, multi-ethnic nation ― and thinking very simply about it, different permutations of these features create many combinations of needs. To paint a clearer picture, Malaysia also comprises people from different economic and education statuses, and to take it one more step further, let us consider the particular distribution of these persons within the different constituencies in the country ― this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Another highly interesting factor with regards to these coming elections is that our country has not seen a different government other than the ruling coalition for the past 56 years. Having the same ruling coalition since Malaysia's independence has placed the country in a comfort-versus-risk type situation.

Fifty-six years is more than enough to measure a government's behaviour and performance, but as comfortable or uncomfortable people are about the current status quo, it is arguably true that the opposition government's performance does not provide us much to measure the ruling government's performance against.

Some may argue that the performance of the Opposition states in the past term would provide some basis for consideration, and while that argument holds merit, I am also inclined to believe that the dynamics of running a country is very different from running a state.

Drawing the above to a close, the aforesaid are just stepping stones in the framework that we call Malaysia ― one can only imagine the work that would have to be done to think about the way that each party's promises would fit into the picture.

The deciding factor?

Having mulled through the mess, I wonder whether it is possible to come up with a yardstick to measure the performance of our political candidates. Although it may be too early to be absolutely conclusive, I can safely say that I have reached a position worth sharing. As a preamble, I acknowledge that my findings may not harmonise with everyone's melody, but I hope that it would at least provide some food for thought.

Preliminarily, it is conceivably important to keep in mind the fact that the presence of today's governmental systems have been refined over many thousands of years to come to where it is today. Governmental credence in most modern democratic societies is derived from the delegated authority of its people.

Consider this as well ― it is a reality of politics that governments will mess up at some point or another. This would be especially true in a young country like Malaysia, which is highly complex and has not seen a different government other than the ruling coalition, as highlighted above. Even a simple analysis of the ruling and opposition coalition's manifestos would reveal huge, gaping holes ― and if there are already such prominent weaknesses on both sides, how is it possible to come to a comfortable decision?

Perhaps the government that Malaysia needs is one that understands the source of its legitimacy, and which will be the foundation that its decisions and reactions would serve.

Malaysia needs a government that is humble enough to be accountable to the people with regards to the choices and mistakes that will come their way. Without this attribute, I believe that Malaysia would not be able to pursue the advancements that she intends to make.

Is that it?

An interesting point about to the situation above is that were a government responsive towards its citizens, then surely the character and mentality of the people would be a persuasive force in its shaping.

Perhaps, Malaysia, our duties as citizens have been far more significant than what we've allowed them to be. It is about time that we got our act together and take full ownership over the future of our country and, more than ever, there is no better time than now to rise up to the occasion.
