Powdered alcohol for US market hits label snag

Palcohol – a powdered alcohol product – is made by an Arizona company called Lipsmark and will come in six varieties of single-drink pouches, the company website says.

It would be the first such product available for sale in the United States, though powdered alcohol has already been approved in Japan and some European countries.

However, after Lipsmark reported Monday it was on track for release in the fall, it later said that it learned of a "discrepancy" from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.

"We were contacted yesterday about the discrepancy," a spokeswoman told AFP in an email yesterday, adding that the issue did not mean approval for Palcohol had been withdrawn.

"Palcohol was approved and is still approved," she said. "We will continue moving forward with the product."

The spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the nature of the discrepancy but referred AFP to a statement online which said it related to "how much powder is in the bag".

The company added there was "a mutual agreement for us to surrender the labels", and that new labels would be submitted. Any approval date for those is unknown.

A spokesman for the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau did not immediately respond to AFP requests for comment.

The half-dozen powder products are made so that they can be combined with water to create a shot of rum or vodka, or with cola or orange juice for a mixer.

Palcohol also plans to release cocktail formulations, including Cosmopolitan, Mojito, Margarita and Lemon Drop.

The company said the product will be sold to people of legal drinking age and could even be sprinkled on food.

A patent for the mixture is pending.

In response to consumer inquiries about whether the product could be snorted, Lipsmark said it would take a half cup of powder to equal one drink.

"Don't do it! It is not a responsible or smart way to use the product," the website urged. – AFP/Relaxnews, April 23, 2014.

Johor FA sack, fine JDT2 manager over referee assault

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 09:38 AM PDT

April 23, 2014

The Football Association of Johor has decided to sack On Jabbar as the team manager of Johor Darul Takzim II (JDT II) for his alleged altercation with a match official last Saturday.

Johor FA honorary secretary Mohd Fahmy Yahya said the decision was taken with the consent of Johor FA President Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, since he was alleged to have punched Sukri Abdul Rahman who was the match official in the Premier League match between JDT II and UiTM FC at the Pasir Gudang Stadium.

Mohd Fahmy in a letter that was posted on the official Facebook of JDT II said On Jabbar was also fined RM25,000 but he would remain as an exco member of the Johor FA.

The team manager was apparently unhappy and angered by the way the match official had handled the match, including decisions made by him (Sukri) during the match which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) secretary general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin was also quoted as saying On Jabbar would also face severe punishment for his action, including a possible life ban from football activities. – Bernama, April 22, 2014.

Elkeson gets champs Guangzhou into last 16 of AFC Champions League

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 07:10 AM PDT

April 22, 2014

A first-half double from Brazilian striker Elkeson rescued title-holders Guangzhou Evergrande from possible elimination and sent them into the AFC Champions League last 16 on Tuesday.

Marcello Lippi's injury-hit tournament favourites had been in danger of bowing out, but they shrugged off the pressure to beat Yokohama F Marinos 2-1 in their final group game.

Guangzhou were joined by 2006 winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, who survived a late penalty shout to draw 0-0 with Melbourne Victory and escape an ultra-tight Group G on goal difference.

Earlier in Group H, Western Sydney Wanderers beat Guizhou Renhe 5-0, the biggest win by an Australian club in the competition, to reach the knock-outs on their tournament debut.

Japan's Kawasaki Frontale also progressed when they were 3-1 winners at home against Ulsan Hyundai, the 2012 champions who paid the price for losing their last three games.

Last week's shock loss to Victory had left World Cup-winner Lippi's much-admired Guangzhou in the perilous position of being level with all three of their group rivals on points with one game remaining.

On a tense evening at Guangzhou's Tianhe Sport Center stadium, Elkeson took just 11 minutes to settle the nerves when he nodded the defending champions in front.

The packed crowd were celebrating shortly before half-time when the big forward, fed by Muriqui, chipped the on-rushing goalkeeper and saw his shot headed over the line by defender Yuzo Kobayashi.

Guangzhou were without injured captain Zheng Zhi, although Muriqui started and Italy international Alessandro Diamanti was a second-half substitute, returning from a spell on the sidelines.

As Yokohama struggled to make an impression, Guangzhou had two glaring misses through Gao Lin and Elkeson, who blazed over an open goal after Muriqui's trickery had left the goalkeeper stranded.

With five minutes left, Manabu Saito pulled one back with a scything left-footed strike from the edge of the box, but there was to be no miracle comeback by the Japanese side.

In Sydney, Shannon Cole put the Wanderers ahead in the sixth minute with a flying volley and they made it a tournament-record tally by an Australian side with a rush of goals late in the second half.

The Wanderers scored four in 13 minutes with Labinot Haliti seizing on a poor backpass to the goalkeeper and Aaron Mooy converting a penalty after Michael Beauchamp had his jersey tugged by Guo Sheng.

Japanese superstar Shinji Ono lit up Parramatta Stadium with an unstoppable volley and defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley completed the scoring with a free header off a corner.

"It's a fantastic feeling and to do it in that manner as well, five goals, after we lost the first game in the group," Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said.

"It was an uphill battle, but the players have shown a lot of belief to finish top of the group."

Victory were unable to follow up last week's win over Guangzhou when they could only draw 0-0 with Jeonbuk, in a frustrating evening when a strong penalty appeal was waved away late on.

Kawasaki went through thanks to goals from Yu Kobayashi, Yoshito Okubo and Jeci, against Rafinha's lone strike for the visitors Ulsan. – AFP, April 22, 2014.

‘Crouching Tiger’ prequel to film in New Zealand

Film director Ang Lee speaks to the media during the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival at AMC Loews Village 7 on April 18, 2014 in New York City. – AFP pic, April 22, 2014. A prequel to the Oscar-winning Chinese martial arts epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" will be shot in New Zealand this year, Film Auckland said today.

The original movie, released in 2000, broke new ground in introducing Western audiences to Chinese cinema and Film Auckland's deputy chairman Alex Lee said securing the follow-up was a major coup for New Zealand.

"Over the last 18 months it's been very quiet and it's nice we're finally getting traction," he told Radio New Zealand. "It's a production that will require a vast number of resources, facilities, technicians and crew."

New Zealand is no stranger to big-budget movie shoots, providing stunning backdrops for both the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies.

But Lee said subsidy changes allowing major productions to claim back up to 25% of their budget as rebates were a decisive factor in Auckland winning the "Crouching Tiger" prequel.

"It's quite clear that until the decision to increase the incentives for international films to come to New Zealand we were just not competitive," he said.

"Crouching Tiger" made US$213.5 million (RM694.2 million) globally, according to industry website Box Office Mojo, including US$128 million in the United States – unprecedented at the time for a foreign language movie.

It also won four Oscars in 2001, including best foreign film, and launched the Hollywood career of director Ang Lee, who went on to win two best director Academy Awards for "Brokeback Mountain" and "Life of Pi".

Film industry bible Variety reported that Malaysia's Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role as a warrior in the prequel, to be titled "The Green Destiny".

It said Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's The Weinstein Company is co-producing the film with New Zealand's Iron Knight Productions.

Yuen Woo-ping, who co-ordinated the eye-popping action scenes in the original, will reportedly direct, using a script which has been approved by officials in Beijing.

The green light from Beijing is important because it ensures access to the rapidly growing Chinese market, where box office takings soared 36% to an estimated US$1.8 billion over the first six months of 2013.

The Chinese market is expected to overtake the US market by 2020, prompting keen interest from Hollywood. – AFP, April 22, 2014.

Oscar show producers to return in 2015

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 08:47 PM PDT

April 22, 2014

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will return to oversee the Academy Awards show for a third consecutive year, Oscars organisers announced yesterday.

The duo – famed for big-screen musicals such as "Chicago," "Footloose" and "Hairspray" – were re-hired after successfully producing the 2013 and 2014 shows that both saw jumps in audience numbers.

"We couldn't be more thrilled to have Craig and Neil back to produce the Oscars again in 2015," Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in a statement.

"Their showmanship has elevated the show to new heights and we are excited to keep the momentum going with this creative partnership."

Zadan and Meron said they were "proud of the show's success over the last two years" and were "eager to embark on another entertaining show to honour this year's motion pictures."

The 86th Academy Awards on March 2 was watched by 45.4 million viewers in the United States, the largest audience in 10 years for the movie industry's biggest night of the year.

The ceremony, hosted by comedian Ellen DeGeneres, included several well-received musical slots from performers such as Pharrell Williams, Pink, and Idina Menzel.

And not to be missed was a star-studded "selfie" that became a Twitter sensation, eventually retweeted 32.8 million times.

Next year's Oscars will take place February 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Nominations will be announced on January 15. – AFP, April 22, 2014.

"Remark" is Artcube Gallery's first show exclusively presenting emerging talents in the Malaysian contemporary art scene.

Featuring Azad Daniel, Al-Khuzairie, Azrin Mohd, Daud Rahim, Dhavinder Singh and Anniketyni Madian, the show provides a snapshot of a new generation of talent and the exciting, inventive directions to which Malaysian art is moving.

All six artists subscribe to the tenets of fine art while exploring the mix of innovation and finesse available to contemporary art.

In "Remark", Azad Daniel, who is well known for his highly glossy finishes, primes his unusual surfaces with cement then painting with auto paint, thereby propelling his art onto the next level of painterly works.

Young ceramist Al-Khuzairie masters the delicately industrial medium of stoneware ceramics to speak about fragile relationships between humans and the environment.

Azrin Mohd is quickly emerging as a leading assemblage artist with his ability to craft highly specific large-scale works, intricately detailed so as to tightly draw his viewers in.

Daud Rahim's philosophical conversations, crucial to the intellectual developments in increasingly affluent societies, endear themselves to audiences with an easy aesthetic that belie the difficulty of his explorations in working in a reverse technique.

Dhavinder Singh, fresh from a well-received solo exhibit, develops the local minimal art movement with works that strive to present established concepts in original configurations.

Artcube demonstrates their commitment to promote and represent high value investment grade Malaysian contemporary art at an international standard not only thorough the representation of established artists, but also by supporting of emerging talent. – April 22, 2014.

Independent Scotland’s last gasp forgotten in Panama jungle

The 1698 venture ended in tragedy, helping to push Scotland into political union with England and form the United Kingdom. But had it succeeded, Scots might have no need to vote in the referendum of independence this coming September.

Named after the gulf where modern Panama and Colombia meet, the Darien scheme was hamstrung from the start by poor planning and English opposition. In less than two years, disease and attacks from the Spanish Empire had wiped out more than half the 2,800 Scottish settlers, and the colony was abandoned.

Barely a shadow of it lingers in the bay known locally as Puerto Escoces (Scottish Harbour), where the Scots founded the colony of New Caledonia with an initial contingent of 1,200.

"There's nothing there now. Nothing," said Amalio Hackin, 47, a former resident of Puerto Escoces and ethnic Kuna, an indigenous people that in 1700 fought with the Scots against the Spanish, then the dominant colonial power in Central America.

Instead of the chatter of Scottish voices, only the shrill drone of cicadas can be heard in the mosquito-ridden jungle where the Scots once dreamed of building a town, New Edinburgh.

Mangroves and mud flats have devoured the site. Among the spider webs, giant palms and tangle of creepers that fill the jungle, mere hints of forgotten dwellings appear in clearings.

After the colony failed, Scotland in 1707 signed the Act of Union with England, swapping independence for shared trading rights, representation in Westminster and money - much of it to compensate the stricken shareholders of the Darien scheme.

Few seriously argue the September 18 vote on independence called by the separatist Scottish National Party (SNP), which runs Scotland's devolved regional government, implies the same risk.

But that has not stopped some SNP critics from raising the spectre of Darien to flag the perils of independence, which all the main parties in the British parliament oppose.

Time and Scotland, have moved on, the SNP says.

"Scotland has a long history as an outward-looking, adventurous, enterprising nation, and the Darien episode is part of that story. But we have come a long way since the days of late 17th century colonialism," said a spokesperson for Humza Yousaf, external affairs minister of the SNP government.

Key of the universe

In 1979, archaeologists uncovered relics of the colony, including tools, musket balls and a well during an excavation of its old fort. But the jungle soon reclaimed the site.

Today, even in Caledonia, an island village of bamboo huts a few miles offshore that is also known as Coedub, local Kuna know nothing of how their forebears fared with the Scots.

Seated on hammocks in their congress hall, hat-wearing Caledonia elders mixed up Edinburgh with Hamburg, were unsure where Scotland is and chuckled at a description of kilts.

But Caledonia's chief, Aristoteles Cabu, and the elders listened closely to the tale of why the Scots came.

"Thank God for sending them home again," the 71-year-old Cabu said finally. "Things would have been different here."

Darien's mastermind was William Paterson, a Scot who played a pivotal role in the foundation of the Bank of Englandin 1694.

A year later, Paterson helped create the Company of Scotland Trading to Africa and the Indies to run the colony he hoped would be a "door of the seas and key of the universe" for a nation hit by economic crisis, famine and English trade curbs.

English investors were initially due to take part in the company. But, worried it would hurt England's trading interests and upset Spain, King William III pressured them to withdraw.

His opposition angered the Scots, whose crown – but not parliament – was united with England in 1603 when William's great-grandfather, James VI of Scotland, became king of England.

Still, Paterson was an astute salesman and the Company of Scotland raised 153,448 pounds from a broad sweep of investors ranging from landowners to merchants, said Douglas Watt, author of "The Price of Scotland", a 2007 book about the Darien scheme.

Though the sum fell short of the amount initially pledged, it was probably equivalent to about 20% of the liquid wealth in Scotland at the time, Watt added.

Wealth is conspicuously absent in Caledonia, part of a semi-autonomous Kuna homeland. Running water is limited, electricity arrived a year ago and toilets are holes giving into the sea.

Death and disease

Problems began before the Scots had even left for Darien, with the Company of Scotland overpaying for ships and losing a large sum to fraud. By the time the first five vessels arrived, disease had claimed dozens of lives and the toll soon mounted.

The directors reported that "in fruitfulness this country seems not to give place to any in the commercial world", but food was scarce and trading the cloth, linen and other goods the Scots brought proved hard. Spanish attacks added to their woes.

King William dealt the final blow, ordering nearby English colonies to deny any assistance to the Scots. In June 1699, the exhausted survivors left New Caledonia for New England.

Very few of them ever saw Scotland again.

To some modern scholars like Watt, the Darien scheme was "vastly optimistic" and was never going to succeed.

"It was the wrong location. Scotland was a minor power, it didn't have the naval back-up to control areas in Central America. And all the capital was put into this one venture," he said. "It's a very early example of a huge corporate cock-up."

Other experts are less sure.

Helen Paul, an economic historian at Southampton University, said many colonial ventures faced similar hardships but some replaced their dead in time to survive. Darien might have done the same if William III had not "stuck in the knife", she said.

News of the disaster was slow to reach Scotland and more settlers set sail for Darien in summer 1699. There they met stiffer resistance from Spain and were forced out by April 1700.

Now, their last traces are vanishing. In 2011, Panama's Congress changed the name of Puerto Escoces to Puerto Inabaginya in honour of a Kuna hero from a village nearer to Panama City.

But it did not get Caledonia's vote.

"It's dirty politics," said Apolonio Arosemena, Caledonia's village clerk. "The correct name is Puerto Escoces." – Reuters, April 22, 2014.

BN: Bertanding atau tidak di Bukit Gelugor

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 02:52 AM PDT

April 22, 2014

MASIH YAKIN

Bagaimanapun, sesetengahnya percaya BN perlu bertanding meskipun ia berdepan laluan sukar.

– Bernama, 22 April, 2014.

Mejar hanya didakwa kesalahan memiliki senjata, bukan cubaan seludup, kata TUDM

Posted: 22 Apr 2014 02:44 AM PDT

OLEH MOHD FARHAN DARWIS
April 22, 2014

"Namun demikian, beliau kini hanya dipertuduhkan atas satu kesalahan sahaja iaitu, 'non-immigrant in possession of a weapon and/or ammunition'," kata kenyataan itu.

"Apabila kotak dibuka, pihak berkuasa San Angelo menemui sepucuk pistol kaliber PT- 22, .22 bersama kelopak berisi lapan butir peluru jenis .22 caliber.

– 22 April, 2014.

Puisi turut meriahkan Pemilu Indonesia

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 05:08 PM PDT

April 22, 2014

Pesta demokrasi tak dilisankan, pesta demokrasi cuma dilangsungkan

Itulah masa, ketika Indonesia dihormati dunia.

Batu berlayangan, api disulutkan, pentungan diayunkan

– 22 April, 2014.

Weekend drama as Mourinho mocks, Moyes moans

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 04:07 PM PDT

April 22, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

It was shocking to say the least when Jose Mourinho mocked the referee by "congratulating" him during the post-match interview after Chelsea's shock 2-1 home defeat to last-placed Sunderland.

And he did not just mock the referee, his "graciousness" extended to the head of the body that governs the selection of referees, Mike Riley, too.

Come on, Jose! Surely, you remember the West Bromwich Albion match early in the season? A penalty to earn a draw in the dying minutes when Ramires went down under dubious circumstances.

What is more interesting to note is the not-so-Happy One's "praise" for his players... surely there can't be trouble in the paradise that is Stamford Bridge?

The popular saying in life, what goes around, comes around could not be more true than in this instance.

However, Jose and referees is a tired topic, and come midweek in Madrid, the Chelsea manager will have another whinge or two about refereeing if results don't go their way.

We have spoken about referees in the Premier League playing a large part in anointing the Champions this season and here we are, back to this conversation.

The number of incredulous calls during matches involving title favourites has steadily increased, and what is being done about this? The body responsible for referees surely must get involved at some level to increase the consistency of refereeing quality?

Moving on to another much used phrase in football, "the day football died", would it have been more aptly applied at the beginning of the season for a certain manager who is finding his predecessor's boots a bit too big to fill?

Yes, such an early judgment would have been deemed harsh on David Moyes.

But to be ridiculed at a homecoming (a fan does not easily forget a manager whose tenure lasted almost a decade) is quite perhaps the right moment to describe Moyes's destruction of a once mighty club.

The football has been a mess. Individual performances have taken a mighty dip. There is no "team" per se. And Moyes has taken Manchester United out of Europe at the first attempt.

With Moyes at the helm, there is no sign of progress against the boundless depths that are seemingly destined to be achieved.

The current England manager, Roy Hodgson, will tell you, at certain junctures of your life, there will be relationships made in hell. It is important to recognise this immediately and act upon it as an individual and not wait for the world to scream at you!

Hodgson will now look at Liverpool and be grateful for how Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Glen Johnson and Jordan Henderson together with Steven Gerrard could help him be successful on the international stage.

In the immediate future, it is going to be extremely important for Hodgson to recognise that the Brendan Rodgers style of play can help propel England forward.

The English national team has for so long not had a playing identity, especially ever since "English football a.k.a route one" died a natural death on the international stage.

Rodgers plays the most innovative football at Liverpool and the intensity of their football is one of the main reasons the English Premier League is one of the most watched leagues in the world.

Lest we forget, and it is easy to forget, the amount of "spade work" put in by each and every individual to ensure the style works. No rewards without hard graft at Anfield, that's for sure.

And note the word "style" and not "system" that is used to describe Rodgers's playing philosophy.

Systems are rigid blueprints tacked onto footballing sides, but what Rodgers has done is implement a distinct style of play, suitable for variations at a far more fluid pace than otherwise possible.

One is the blueprint for long-term success, and the other is often exhilarating to watch. Which would you prefer? – April 22, 2014.
