Khairy wants to set realistic target for Thomas Cup

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 07:51 AM PDT

April 29, 2014

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin wants to adopt a realistic approach when setting the target for the 2014 Thomas and Uber Cup finals in New Delhi, India, next month.

Khairy (pic) said both the Thomas and Uber Cup teams would be facing tough competition in the finals which are scheduled to take place in New Delhi from May 18 to 25.

"We understand the situation well as the country's shuttlers will be facing tough opposition from the best teams in the world. I do not want to set a lofty target for the time being," he said after launching the "Malaysia Purple League", a professional badminton league at the Sentosa Sports Arena today.

Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia's (BAM) deputy president Datuk Mohamad Norza Zakaria said the association would be responsible for sending a balanced team to compete in the Thomas Cup.

"Our hope is to see the team qualify for the semifinals stage because the expectations of the fans are high. We will take one step at a time. The first task will be to win the group," he said.

Speaking of the final slot for the men's singles which has yet to be decided, Mohamad Norza said the status of Goh Soon Huat has not been confirmed although he has earned himself a shot at a place in the team.

Soon Huat had crossed the first and second tests in the trials by beating Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Latif, respectively.

"We will evaluate the players from every aspect and take into account their current performance, fitness and achievements plus a fitness report from the National Sports Institute.

"However, world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei has chosen Misbun Ramdan Misbun ahead of Goh Soon Huat despite the former losing to the latter in the final selection match today," he said.

Wimbledon seedings boost for champion Murray

"We have a surfaced-based seeding system here at Wimbledon," All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) chairman Philip Brook told a press conference at the tournament venue in south London.

"So we take the ranking points of each player, and add to that the ranking points they hypothetically received last year on grass, and we add to that 75% of the best-performing tournament in the previous year.

"So to put it into context for Andy Murray, as winner of Queen's last year and winner here last year, and a finalist here in 2012, there will be a significant impact on him.

"There will also be quite a significant impact on (Roger) Federer and (Novak) Djokovic. There will be some adjustment."

Organisers also defended a move to increase the prize money for first-round losers by nearly 15% to £27,000 (RM147,850).

Total prize money has gone up 10.8% to £25 million, with the winners of the men's and women's singles finals each in line to take home £1.76 million, compared to £1.6 million in 2013.

"I slightly take issue with the notion that players will turn up and lose," said AELTC chief executive Richard Lewis.

"I have to make the point that the players have worked hard to get there. Either they have have got into the championships through their ranking, so that's 12 months of play before, or there are some wild cards.

"So to portray it as £27,000 for turning up and doing nothing, I don't think that's valid."

Lewis also said that there were no plans to make alterations to any of the courts, despite a number of leading players having complained that they were too slippery during last year's tournament.

"I think in hindsight that was more of an anecdotal problem over a couple of days, and only one or two players took issue with it," he said.

"Wimbledon is played on a natural surface and of course the conditions change over the duration of the tournament. So we don't feel there are any issues to address on that."

Wimbledon this year runs from June 23 to July 6. – AFP, April 29, 2014.

Oscar Isaac named for ‘Star Wars VII’ as rumours intensify

The Guatemala-born American actor, who was praised for his performance in the Coen brothers' 2013 folk music tale "Inside Llewyn Davis", is in London in order to take part in a cast-wide table read of the "Episode VII" script, according to Deadline.

With original "Star Wars" actress Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) relatively open about her likely involvement in the new film, and Darth Maul voice actor Peter Serafinowicz having taken a London selfie with Mark Hamill on April 27, a table read makes sense of the gradual migration of suspected participants towards Pinewood Studios.

Other suspected cast members: Adam Driver (HBO's "Girls") and John Boyega ("Attack the Block") were also name–checked, while another possibility remains British theatre actress Maisie Richardson-Sellers.

With Fisher and Hamill expected to play supporting roles in this first of a new trilogy of films, handing over to a new generation, Han Solo actor Harrison Ford was thought likely to follow suit.

But Deadline's info indicates that Ford has been given "a gigantic role" for the trilogy starter.

Clarity is expected to come over the weekend, with the arrival of May 4, dubbed "Star Wars Day" after its resemblance to part the franchise's iconic phrase "May the Force be with you". – AFP/Relaxnews, April 29, 2014.

‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ author agrees to e-book release

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 06:35 PM PDT

April 29, 2014

Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "To Kill a Mockingbird," has agreed to release the novel – one of the few literary classics available only in print – as an e-book, her publisher said on yesterday.

The announcement coincided with the 88th birthday of the reclusive author, who described the digital version set to be released on July 8 as "Mockingbird for a new generation."

"I'm still old-fashioned. I love dusty old books and libraries," Lee said in a rare public statement.

The book, first published in 1960, has sold more than 30 million copies and is available in 40 languages worldwide. According to HarperCollins Publishers, it still sells around one million copies a year.

"Every home has a dog-eared copy of 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' and now readers will be able to add this favourite book to their digital libraries," said Michael Morrison, president and publisher of HarperCollins US General Books Group and Canada.

The book was adapted to a movie in 1962 starring Gregory Peck, who played the novel's main character, Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who defends an African-American man wrongly accused of rape during the 1930s "Jim Crow" era.

The movie won three Academy Awards and is considered by the American Film Institute as one of the best films of all time.

The release of the e-book comes nearly a year after Lee sued her former literary agent over an alleged scheme to trick her into signing away the copyright to her novel. She later reached a settlement.

In February, Lee also settled another lawsuit with a museum in her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, which she accused of illegally profiting from the book, the only novel Lee ever published. – Reuters, April 29, 2014.

Ziarah kembali ‘Kampung Kambing’  A Samad Said

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 04:44 PM PDT

April 29, 2014

Sebab itulah Sasterawan Negara Datuk A Samad Said pernah menyatakan, "Tidak ramai manusia yang sempat memikirkan apa ertinya kehidupan mereka.

A Samad Said sendiri mendiami 'Kampung Kambing' untuk beberapa waktu di mana jirannya adalah penyair A S Amin.

Kini, keadaan 'Kampung Kambing' 'sama sekali 'hilang'.

– 29 April, 2014.

Learn to beat the bus the Barca way

Posted: 28 Apr 2014 04:26 PM PDT

April 29, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

It used to be a single bus, now it has become two buses, according to Brendan Rodgers.

Very soon it will have to be decided if the buses in question are single or of the double-decker variety. But more about the Mourinho Express later.

At the end of the day, it is about defensive discipline. And this was in abundance when Barcelona played Villareal late Sunday night.

The Catalans, struggling with emotions after the passing of Tito Villanova, had to contend once again with trying to break down a tight defence.

The Spanish giants have had to deal with negative football too many times over the years. Yet, they turn up every week knowing they are going to break teams down, teams that only set out to stifle instead of expressing themselves.

The boys from Barca come prepared with a mentality of needing patience and composure, instead of constant trickery and fluidity.

Quite possibly, Barcelona are the only team in the world who face opponents happy to defend deep every week. They never complain.

They get on with their job of keeping possession and being patient.

And last night, Villareal finally cracked despite taking a deserved two-goal lead courtesy of counter-attacking moves coming good. A cruel double deflection and a header from a badly-positioned defender brought Barca back into the game and Leo Messi finally sealed the win.

However, just a few hours earlier, at Anfield, the home team had been defeated by an opponent they could not break down, despite enjoying better possession and a massive margin in shots at goal.

For all that has been said and done, Chelsea are under no obligation to attack or even to try to play at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho, ever the Reactive One, is special in what he does, but it does not mean that what he does is not boring to watch. It works, and that is what matters in football.

But if one were to analyse the match further, it becomes obvious that the lack of European football has meant there is no variation in tactics by Brendan Rodgers.

He has perfected the game plan of attacking teams with a fast brand of progressive football. He has caught the English Premier League by surprise by being a breath of fresh air in what has become a stuffy league.

This, however, has caught up with Liverpool, and it was never more apparent than against Chelsea that space and time in the defensive third of the pitch is a commodity.

It certainly is going to be the norm when Liverpool return to European football at the highest level next season. There will be quite perhaps the time when Rodgers will have to apply the same negative tactics too, akin to those that Rafael Benitez applied with varying degrees of success during his tenure at Anfield, both in Europe and in England.

Even the great Real Madrid had to resort to a very deep and compact defensive formation when they hosted and beat Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final last Wednesday.

Certainly, it has been a major lesson learnt for Rodgers and we can forgive his bitterness, which is probably a spur of the moment reaction. If not for the calamitous mistake by Steven Gerrard, it could well have been a goalless draw.

The cruel irony of the Liverpool stalwart, inspiring with his "We won't let this slip" cry post-Manchester City, but did exactly that as he was the victim of a poor first touch. Demba Ba made no mistake and Liverpool then peppered Chelsea to no avail.

The comfort with which Chelsea sat back was unnerving for the Anfield crowd, Branislav Ivanovic imperious at centerback. The Serbian fullback was at ease facing off Raheem Sterling and Coutinho's direct runs.

Alongside him, the young Czech talent Tomas Kalas – making his debut in place of an injured John Terry - and his first ever Premier League assignment was Luis Suarez. The final result tells us he succeeded. Speed and a good sense of positioning makes him a defender to watch for the future.

Gerrard peppered Mark Schwarzer's goal with shot after shot, but the lack of conviction behind them was apparent. With each passing shot, Gerrard grew more and more frustrated, most visibly crumpling to the ground after a brilliant opportunity to head for goal was wasted with a meek header instead.

Ultimately, with all feet on deck, that is in the Chelsea half, the Blues grabbed a second when Fernando Torres and Willian broke into the Liverpool half unmarked, leaving just 50 yards and Simon Mignolet between them and the goal.

Torres unselfishly set Willian for the tap-in, and one wonders if the thought crossed the Spaniard's mind to go for goal himself. But one prefers to think he just did not want to be the one to hit the final nail into his former club's disappointing night.

The Premier League title is still Liverpool's to play for and expect them to be smarter in their ways.

Manchester City have to win their three remaining fixtures – Everton (away), Aston Villa (home), West Ham United (home) – and Liverpool fans will be looking to their Merseyside neighbours for a massive favour on Saturday.

However, the question still lingers – could Chelsea snatch it in the end? This season is far from over. – April 29, 2014.

Yadim setuju berada dalam jawatankuasa teknikal hudud jika dipelawa

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 03:06 AM PDT

April 29, 2014

– Bernama, 29 April, 2014.

MH370: Jepun mohon sertai panel pakar, kata Hishammuddin

Posted: 29 Apr 2014 02:56 AM PDT

April 29, 2014

– Bernama, 29 April, 2014.
