Malaysia gets the blue ribbon for cooking Posted: 03 Jan 2012 05:17 PM PST Ming Ho, general manager of Sunway Le Cordon Bleu... aiming to raise the bar in culinary arts studies. — Picture by Jack Ooi PETALING JAYA, Jan 4 — While we are known as a nation of food lovers, Malaysia is not the first country you think of when it comes to an education in the culinary arts. For that, the storied Le Cordon Bleu still holds a special place in a quite crowded field of Swiss and other European institutions. So when the partnership between Sunway University College and Le Cordon Bleu was announced last year, foodies (and those who want a career in the kitchen, of course) were buzzing with excitement. Le Cordon Bleu, which means "The Blue Ribbon" in French, is a name synonymous with fine food and education. It is the world's largest hospitality education institution with 35 schools in five continents and this month Malaysia joins that distinguished rank. Most of the graduates have become celebrity chefs, opened Michelin-star restaurants and are internationally recognised. Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia is the second Le Cordon Bleu institute established in South-East Asia after Thailand. It is a standalone institute, partnering with Sunway Education Group and Le Cordon Bleu Paris. I spoke to Ming Ho, general manager of Sunway Le Cordon Bleu, Institute of Culinary Arts on this important milestone in culinary arts education in Malaysia. So, why was Malaysia chosen by Le Cordon Bleu? Practical sessions in the kitchen are an integral part of the course. Ho says that Malaysia is the best hub in terms of getting students from all over South-East Asia because of the low cost of living. Another important factor to consider is also that it caters to a large Indonesian and local market as the institute does not feature any recipes with pork. Dr Andre Contreau, president and CEO of Le Cordon Bleu International saw the opportunity of the infrastructure in Malaysia and felt that this strategic location is suitable to get a good mix of students from South-East Asia.  What Le Cordon Bleu Malaysia offers is a nine-month programme with three months of internship for both local and international students. In the programme, there are three terms, each spanning three months. At the end of each term, a certificate is given progressively until the end of the course. There are two kinds of programmes offered, culinary arts in cuisine and culinary arts in pastry. Once the student graduates with the certification, he or she is internationally recognised in the culinary world and the certificate is the same as the one obtained in Le Cordon Bleu France as well as every Le Cordon Bleu institute in the world. "We hope to raise the bar of culinary arts studies because the programme is very intensive. It is short, just nine months but the hours put in to learn when the chef is demonstrating the recipes and hands-on practical sessions totals to 540 hours. Any culinary school will not give you that kind of practical hours. "We only have 16 stations maximum in the practice kitchen so they (the students) have their own stove, their own cutlery and so on. Chefs will come and guide them as they have observed from the demonstration classes," said Ho. She explains that the challenges Le Cordon Bleu may face here is the discipline of young, aspiring chefs. Punctuality and attendance is taken very seriously in Le Cordon Bleu and this can be seen even in the institute in Bangkok. The prestigious Le Cordon Bleu certificate. If the student is late for 15 minutes six times in a row he is considered three days' absent. This can result in expulsion. The student can still continue the rest of the term but at the end of the term, he will not get a certificate. Ho goes on to say that a lot of young people nowadays want a shortcut. When they graduate, they want to have a high position but they do not know that going through the programme is hard work.  "If you want to be a chef you have to succumb to the discipline and you have to be serious in your career path. If you want to be a good chef you will take heat from all the other professionals who have already been long in the industry and must really know the game to teach you the right way," she added. Le Cordon Bleu is from France, so people presume that the school only teaches French cuisine and nothing else. But according to Ho, it is delivering French techniques through French recipes in a way that students can create and innovate every recipe to their liking, style and culture. She gave an example of when a Le Cordon Bleu chef was teaching how to make fish mousse. Jamie Oliver's Meals in Minutes, released last fall, was criticised namely for its Meatball Sandwich recipe, which contains more fat than a Big Mac and more than double the calories, cholesterol, sodium and saturated fat, said the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The recipe calls for ground beef, pancetta, Jarlsberg cheese and ciabatta loaves. It's a harsh blow for the British chef and TV personality, who has been at the forefront of several aggressive campaigns and public policy movements pushing families to eat healthier meals, including series like Jamie's School Dinners in the UK and Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution in the US. Oliver's offending meatball sandwich recipe has landed him in the company of known butter and fat-bomb recipe writers like Southern food matriarch Paula Deen, who makes no apologies for deep frying cheesecake, and meat-loving chef Guy Fieri. A serving of Hot Buffalo Wings (three wings) from Paula Deen's Southern Cooking Bible contains 910 calories and 85gm of fat, while Guy Fieri Food's Jambalaya Sandwich with bacon, Andouille and smoked sausages could help raise the risk of colon cancer, the group says. Real storm back to take charge in Cup Posted: 03 Jan 2012 03:33 PM PST MADRID, Jan 4 — Holders Real Madrid scored three times in 10 minutes at the Bernabeu yesterday in a dramatic comeback to beat Malaga 3-2 in their King's Cup last 16 first leg. Real coach Jose Mourinho threw caution to the wind with a triple substitution at halftime when his side were trailing 2-0. Sami Khedira, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema responded by netting between the 68th and 78th minutes. Up to that point, the underdogs had held sway in the Cup with three surprise results earlier in the evening. Despite having Gareth Barry sent off in the 73rd minute, first-half goals from Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and a second-half penalty from James Milner helped City, who had lost to Sunderland only two days ago, to a comprehensive victory. They move to 48 points from 20 games, three clear of rivals Manchester United who have played one match fewer and six clear of Tottenham who had Jermain Defoe's clinical finish to thank for their victory at White Hart Lane. Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said fixing had overtaken drugs cheats in terms of the threat posed to the reputation of the Games. "You cannot underestimate the threat this poses because the moment that spectators start to feel that what they are seeing in front of them is not a true contest, that is when spectators stop turning up and the whole thing falls to pieces," he told the weekly broadsheet. He said he thought betting authorities in Western countries were "well set up" to spot illegal activity but criticised the lack of regulation in Asia, both on the Indian sub-continent and in the Far East. Robertson cited the recent cricket corruption scandal, in which three Pakistan players were jailed in Britain for their part in spot-fixing, pre-arranged elements in a match which betting rings can make money on. "The issue is not of betting syndicates in this part of the world," the minister said. "It is in illegal betting syndicates on the Indian sub-continent and elsewhere, where huge sums of money change hands." He said spot-betting was the biggest threat, with syndicates wagering huge sums on more easily fixed elements within matches, rather than on the outcome of whole contests. "At some stage over the next two or three years, we will have some other sort of betting scandal in some sport. I just hope it is not at the Olympics," Robertson said. For the first time in the history of the Games, a dedicated intelligence unit will be created to crack down on attempts to bribe athletes and irregular betting patterns. The unit will be headed up by Britain's Scotland Yard police headquarters and work with the Serious Organised Crime Agency and Interpol to track suspicious gambling activity, The Sunday Times said. New anti-wrinkle technology ‘tricks’ cells into regeneration Posted: 02 Jan 2012 11:32 PM PST Ad for upcoming Forever Youth Liberator Line. NEW YORK, Jan 3 - The buzz around 2012's must-have anti-wrinkle cream has begun, with a product reportedly set for release by French cosmetics company L'Oréal generating interest in the anti-aging industry. A report published January 2 by The Daily Mail claims a new line of anti-wrinkle creams which "trick" skin cells into regenerating themselves is expected for release this year. According to the publication, L'Oréal will use a special type of technology registered as Glycanactif for a product line in which artificial chemicals can mimic natural chemical behaviour, penetrating the skin's surface and stimulating cell regeneration. "There is still much more to cell signalling and the ageing process, but all the cosmetics we had before were acting on the surface," explained L'Oréal's research director Bruno Bernard. "Now we are able to create a rejuvenating effect on the deeper levels of the skin." Meanwhile, Richard Gallo, a professor of dermatology at the University of California in San Diego, described the results of the study into cell regeneration technology as "surprisingly good." Gallo told The Sunday Times the technology could have a huge impact on releases from across the beauty industry, although urged a cautious approach. "There are a number of companies looking into this area. The optimistic side of me says it does have the potential... but the pessimist in me says it might be just another piece of hype," he warned. One product developed using L'Oréal's glycobiology technology to have already made the headlines is Yves Saint Laurent's Forever Youth Liberator. Following its January launch in Europe and Japan with a US unveiling in March, the Forever Youth Liberator line has benefited from parent company L'Oréal's research into glycans. The new line containing the glycan complex is aimed at women over 30 and comprises a serum, cleansing mousse, lotion, cream, rich cream, eye cream and SPF 15 cream and lotion. Searle, whose anarchic St Trinian's characters spawned a series of movie adaptations, died on Dec. 30 at a hospital near his home in Draguignan, in France's south-eastern Var region. "(He) passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his children and grandson by his side," Kate Searle said. His spindly schoolgirl creations, which first appeared in 1941, hit the big screen in 1954 as "The Belles of St Trinian's", with Alastair Sim starring in drag as headmistress Millicent Fritton. The film franchise was revived in 2007, with Rupert Everett taking over the headmistress role, with a follow-up, "St Trinian's 2: The Legend of Fritton's Gold", appearing in 2009. Searle was also known for his comic illustrations in a series of 1950s satires on British private school education, written by author Geoffrey Willans, including "Down with Skool" and "How to be Topp". The books featured the thoughts of schoolboy Nigel Molesworth, and his advice on how to survive the trials of term-time at the crumbling St. Custard's, ruled over by terrifying headmaster Grimes, head boy Grabber and the school dog. Searle's cartoons also appeared in magazines and newspapers, including Britain's Punch and The New Yorker. His work was recognised internationally, and he won a number of awards from America's National Cartoonists Society. In France, where he lived since 1961, he was awarded the country's prestigious Legion d'Honneur. Searle was born in Cambridge in 1920 and attended the Cambridge School of Art. Serving with Britain's Royal Engineers in World War Two, Searle was captured in Singapore by the Japanese and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Changi and working on the Thai-Burma railway. During captivity he secretly made sketches of the hardship of camp life, hiding the drawings under the mattresses of prisoners suffering from cholera. Her eighth book, "Lidia's Italy in America," gathers 175 recipes from the dishes served in the many Italian neighbourhoods across the United States, from the deep-dish pizza of Chicago to the Muffuletta sandwich of New Orleans. Bastianich, who lives in Long Island, New York, spoke about Italian-American cooking and how through their cuisine Italian-Americans proudly honour their homeland, even as they create something new. Q: Why did you write this book? A: "In the 20 years that I have been preparing regional Italian food I noticed that Italian-American food was thriving all over America. I began to understand these Italian-Americans still felt very Italian. I thought, 'this is a vibrant story. It's part of the way America evolved'." Q: How much of the Italian-American food in your book is actually Italian? How much American? A: "You might find maybe five or 10 per cent of this Italian-American food being cooked in Italy. So you could say it is not Italian and it is not. Italian-American is an adaptation of the Italian immigrants. It's more a part of Americana." Q: What's the biggest difference between Italian cuisine and Italian-American cuisine? A: "The excessive use of meats. Take the Sunday sauce. In Italy they made it with a piece of pork, maybe shoulder or skin, so the tomato sauce had a taste of meat. It was delicious and everybody got a little bit of meat in the second course. Here it comes with meatballs, braciole (rolled beef) and more. Why? Because finally these poor people had meat on the table and they couldn't get enough of it, I guess. " Q: How do you explain the universal appeal of Italian food? A: "It's not only the food. Everybody loves the Italian style: the music, the art. I think it has to do with our positioning in the middle of the Mediterranean: great water, sun, temperature and a diversified topography. Enjoying life, food, family, beauty, all that permeates through and I think that's what Americans love." Asparagus Fritters – Fritelle d'Asparagi Makes 10 to 12 fritters 2 bunches medium asparagus spears, peeled at the base (about 22 spears) 5 large eggs 1/2 cup grated Grana Padano or Parmigiano-Reggiano 1/2 small onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 2 tablespoons all- purpose fl our 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for seasoning Vegetable oil, for frying Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the asparagus spears and cook until tender but not mushy, about 8 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water to cool. Drain and dry the spears and cut into 1/2-inch pieces. Whisk together the eggs, grated cheese, onion, bread crumbs, flour and salt in a large bowl. Stir in the asparagus pieces. Heat 1/2 inch vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. (The oil is ready when a drop of batter sizzles on contact.) Drop 1/4-cup rounds of the batter into the hot oil, flattening if necessary, to make flat cakes. Cook until golden on the underside, about 2 minutes, then flip, and fry until the fritters are cooked through, about 2 minutes more. Oh dear, De Gea Posted: 02 Jan 2012 04:01 PM PST JAN 3 — Well, that was a strange turn of events. Manchester United losing at home to Blackburn — who had started the day rock bottom of the table — and Chelsea losing at home against Aston Villa — who had started the day with just one victory in their seven previous fixtures — was not the way we expected 2011 to end. And neither was a defeat for Premier League top dogs Manchester City at lowly Sunderland the first result we were anticipating in 2012. Something in the air, or just a random set of coincidences? I'd plump for the latter and assert that there was no particular reason for three shocks at the same time — they just happened to happen. (I know a lot of you will be shouting "Fix!" in the conviction that the whole thing was orchestrated by a bunch of dodgy bookmakers, but I believe there's too much money in the Premier League for match-fixing to be prevalent. But let's not get into all that now...) Of the three results, United's capitulation to Blackburn was the most shocking. Results like the defeat suffered by Chelsea against Villa are inevitable during the transitional phase the Blues are currently going through. Consistency will be difficult to achieve as Andre Villas Boas continues to mould a new team and a new style of play, and we can expect the Londoners to lose a few more games against lowly-placed opposition in the next few months. And City's loss came against a Sunderland team that has clearly been re-energised by the arrival of Martin O'Neill a month ago; they are playing with a renewed sense of conviction and purpose, and have won three of the five games since their new manager's arrival. So although City were wasteful in front of goal and will point to the fact that Ji Dong Won's goal should have been ruled out for offside, you could say that they were simply playing the wrong team at the wrong time. United's Old Trafford defeat against Blackburn, however, was truly unexpected, and leaves young Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea in a very precarious position. Having surrendered a two-goal advantage, United fought back to 2-2 thanks to another pair of goals from in-form Dimitar Berbatov and looked certain to claim at least one point. But then De Gea flapped dreadfully at a corner to allow Grant Hanley to nod home the winner for Rovers, handing Sir Alex Ferguson an unwanted birthday present. Ferguson now has to decide whether to stick with De Gea, who has never looked fully comfortable since his summer arrival from Atletico Madrid. The best goalkeepers aren't the ones who make the most spectacular saves; they are the ones who make the fewest mistakes, and De Gea is highly questionable in that regard. It might be time to give Anders Lindegaard an extended run in the team. Chelsea have already bounced back from their loss thanks to a late winner from the irrepressible Frank Lampard at Wolves, and it will be interesting to see whether City and United can make an equally quick recovery in their challenging fixtures in the next couple of days. First up, City host Liverpool tonight and it could be a cracker. Similar to Chelsea, the rebuilding process currently under way at Liverpool has led to an inevitable inconsistency, but Kenny Dalglish's side are certainly showing plenty of potential and have been considerably strengthened by Steven Gerrard's return from injury. Newcastle will be firing on all cylinders and a red-hot atmosphere at St James' Park is guaranteed, but I feel the combination of United's sense of injustice from their previous meeting and the rollicking they'll have received from Ferguson after the loss against Blackburn will propel them into pulling out a dogged away win. What we dream of Posted: 02 Jan 2012 03:48 PM PST JAN 3 — Dare we Malaysians dream that in 2012: • Bersih 2.0's eight demands will be implemented before Parliament is dissolved. • the run-up to the elections will bring out the best in everyone and not the worst. • we have free and fair elections run by an Election Commission which is empowered, independent and brooks no cheating. • the selling of our country to foreigners for votes (as is widely believed to be happening) will be halted and punished as the highest treason. • every single registered voter votes in the 13th general election. • justice will be done in Sodomy II. • our Christian friends (who are a minority in this country) will not continue to be the target of baseless attacks and humiliation by a few. • the government will show some guts and leadership in dealing with those who spew racism and religious hatred (this is unlikely). • some of our leaders will get treatment for schizophrenia and compulsive lying. • many of our leaders will educate themselves to understand the following concepts: a. conflict of interest. b. human rights. c. democracy. d. good governance. e. telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. f. that it is wrong to rob from the rakyat. g. that there is no such thing as "the government's money" — it belongs to the rakyat. • preserving our environment will take priority over making money (note Lynas). • justice will be done for those who have lost their lives at the hands of the authorities and those incarcerated without trial. • the government apologises to the EO6 and compensates them for wrongfully and baselessly detaining them for 30 days. • the government dumps the Peaceful Assembly Bill. • Amanah comes to life and does more than give nice speeches. • we will finally see the peaceful and just society we all crave. Ariffin KUALA LUMPUR, 3 Jan — Kumpulan Aktivis mahasiswa, Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), dan Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas) hari ini membuat desakan kepada Polis Bukit Aman agar segera menyiasat kejadian keganasan polis sewaktu demonstrasi mereka di Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) ketika malam tahun baru lalu. "Kami mendesak pihak polis Bukit Aman untuk melihat berkaitan perkara ini kerena kami percaya terdapatnya penyiasatan yang indipenden untuk menyiasat kejadian sebenar," peguam mereka, Fadiah Najwa Fikri berkata kepada pemberita di sini selepas laporan polis dibuat. "Terdapat ramai saksi yang melihat anggota polis menendang, dan memukul mahasiswa. Malah, kami sendiri ada menyimpan gambar dan video polis menggunakan kekerasan untuk menyuraikan kumpulan itu," tambahnya. Fadiah menyatakan bahawa Malaysia berada di bawah Hak Asasi Manusia Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) yang mana Perdana Menteri "telah berulang kali menyatakan negara akan mengutamakan kepentingan demokrasi dan hak asasi manusia ke peringkat tertinggi." "Tapi adakah ini yang Najib maksudkan sebagai mengutamakan demokrasi dan hak asasi manusia?" Soalnya. "Ini adalah satu penipuan. Pelajar-pelajar ini tidak bersenjata, mereka hanya menyuarakan hak mereka menuntut kebebasan akademik, tetapi dipukul oleh 200 pegawai," katanya lagi. Sementara itu, Presiden Bebas, Haziq Abdul Aziz, yang merupakan salah seorang daripada 17 pelajar yang ditahan pihak berkuasa berkata, pegawai polis yang terlibat harus dibawa ke muka pengadilan dan dihukum. "Tiada hak istimewa buat polis yang yang melakukan jenayah," katanya. "Kami mengharapkan pihak polis akan mengambil tindakan tegas ( terhadap pegawai terlibat) dan tiada 'double standard' dalam menjalankan siasatan," tambahnya lagi. Dalam kejadian malam tahun baru lalu, sekitar 60 mahasiswa daripada SMM dan Bebas mendakwa telah dipukul oleh anggota polis sehingga mengakibatkan seorang daripada pemimpinnya, Mohd Safwan Anang terpaksa dikejarkan ke Hospital Slim River. Safwan mendakwa telah disepak di dada menggunakan lutut oleh anggota polis  dan mengalami pecah bibir serta sesak nafas. Pakatan: 100,000 akan berkumpul di mahkamah, lebih banyak perhimpunan akan menyusul Posted: 02 Jan 2012 09:52 PM PST Pakatan: 100,000 akan berkumpul di mahkamah, lebih banyak perhimpunan akan menyusul PETALING JAYA,  3 Jan — Pakatan Rakyat hari ini berkata akan mengumpulkan seramai 100,00 orang pada Isnin depan untuk memberikan sokongan kepada Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim di Mahkamah Tinggi Kuala Lumpur yang akan mengumumkan keputusan salah laku liwat. Timbalan Presiden PKR Azmin Ali (gambar) berkata pakatan pembangkang bersetuju untuk menggerakkan dan berkumpul di Kompleks Mahkaham Jalan Duta walaupun polis telah mengeluarkan arahan keras untuk tidak mengadakan perhimpunan semasa keputusan diumumkan yang telah mengambil masa dua tahun. "Sistem kita begitu rapuh, kita perlu menjangka senario terburuk. Bersama PAS dan DAP kami akan mengumpul 100,000 orang di mahkamah untuk memberikan sokongan kami kepada Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim," kata Ahli Parlimen Gombak ini. Beliau juga mengingatkan perhimpunan awam akan diteruskan sehingga pilihan raya umum jika bekas timbalan perdana menteri itu didapati bersalah. "Kami akan teruskan. Perhimpunan sama akan diadakan di Pulau Pinang pada sebelah malam. Jika beliau dibebaskan maka Anwar akan diraikan di negerinya. Jika tidak kami akan ke Pulau Pinang untuk menuntut tuntutan kami," katanya. Pesuruhjaya PAS Selangor Dr Rani Osman juga berkata parti Islam itu akan menyeru setiap kawasan untuk menggerakkan dan "walaupun mereka di Sabah dan Sarawak mahu menyertainya." Anwar dituduh melibat bekas pembantunya, dakwaan yang mana beliau telah menafikan sekeras-kerasnya, selain mengatakan ia adalah agenda untuk memusnahkan karier politiknya. Mahkamah Tinggi Kuala Lumpur telah mendengar hujah penutup dari 8 Disember hingga 15 Disember dan akan mengumumkan keputusan pada Isnin ini. Harapan ketua pembangkang itu untuk bergelar perdana menteri mungkin akan musnah sekiranya mahkamah memutuskan beliau bersalah yang akan membawa hukumum penjara maksimum 20 tahun. Azmin menyifatkan tuduhan liwat itu sebagai "konspirasi berbahaya" namun menegaskan hari ini "rancangan Pakatan Rakyat tidak akan tergelincir dan akan dipilih menerajui kerajaan pusat selepas ini." Anwar sebelum ini dijatuhkan hukuman penjara sembilan tahun pada 2000 tetapi Mahkamah Persekutuan mengubah keputusan pada 2004 dan membenarkan beliau mengetuai kempen pilihan raya 2008. Little kopitiam in Little India Posted: 02 Jan 2012 04:45 PM PST An Le Kopitiam in Little India is a real gem. GEORGE TOWN, Jan 3 — You'll be surprised what little gems one can unearth in the most unlikely places. Take Little India in George Town, for example. Perched on the edge of the ethnic and lau juak (merry) little enclave is the Peace and Joy (An Le) Coffee Shop, one of those old kopitiams that are, sadly, slowly but inexorably disappearing from our cities. This double-fronted little oasis of relative quiet is situated at the junction of China Street and Lebuh Queen. Instead of curries, tandooris and nasi kandar, you'll find stalls selling some good old Penang favourites inside. An Le's special Chee Cheong Fun with 'sambal hey bee'. — Pictures by Helen Ong Proprietor Ah Cheong, aided by her son Alex, moved there about 10 years ago after nearly four decades at the old kopitiam across the road. It's popular with locals and tourists who come in to escape the dust of the busy roads and the debilitating heat of the day. Apart from drinks — they are proud of their fresh and fragrant local coffee — they also run the chee cheong fun stall, the smooth, steamed rice noodles served with the typically sweet, dark and gooey "hey ko" (prawn paste) sauce but with a difference: spicy home-made "sambal hey bee". They've just introduced dim sum, and Ah Cheong also cooks the all-important soup for their popular chicken kuey teow t'ng. Unfortunately Ah Kheong is no longer there to serve his wanton mee; however, he did train up his replacement Ah Bee who has now taken over and continues to serve up this old favourite. The wanton mee stall is now run by Ah Bee. Ah Cheong's brother Chee Wah serves his award-winning curry mee, as vouched for by the certificate which is displayed on the front of his stall: it proudly proclaims he was voted the "Best Hawker People's Choice" by Fonterra Food Services in 2009. It's tasty and spicy, although I wish I'd gone there on a weekend, as it is then that he adds something special: his own home-made curry chicken. Former hotel chef de partie Ah Boon runs the Western food stall, serving a variety of breakfast dishes, fish 'n chips, and chicken chops. He's also concocted a unique and apparently popular "English murtabak", basically a cheese and chicken ham sandwich which is coated with beaten egg then fried till crispy. There's also the newly-arrived Ah Guan's char kuey teow. The stalls start operating at about 7am every day and run on till about 5pm except on weekends when they shut at 3pm, when there's mamak mee goreng available as well. They used to open right through to night time but according to Alex, there are fewer hawkers available now.  An Le Kedai Kopi is at 81/89 China Street, Penang.
