New Zealand says yes to celebrity chef Nigella despite US exclusion

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 07:35 PM PDT

April 20, 2014

New Zealand officials have granted a special visa to British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson (pic), who has admitted cocaine use, in an apparent confirmation she has been blocked from entering the United States, according to a report today.

US authorities declined to specify why Lawson was stopped from flying from London to Los Angeles late last month.

However, in a statement to the Herald on Sunday newspaper, Immigration New Zealand said Lawson was not allowed to enter the United States which meant she required special permission to work in New Zealand.

"As Ms Lawson has been excluded from another country, namely the United States, she was ineligible to be granted a visa to enter New Zealand unless given a special direction," the statement said.

"A special direction was considered and granted and subsequently her visa application was approved."

The 54-year-old Lawson admitted, when giving evidence in a court case last year, that she had used cocaine and cannabis in the past.

British newspapers speculated the television chef was stopped from flying to the US, where she stars in a cooking talent show "The Taste", because of her admission of drug use.

A US embassy spokeswoman in London confirmed Lawson was denied permission to fly to Los Angeles but declined to say why, citing privacy reasons.

Lawson is in New Zealand to film a commercial for a chocolate manufacturer. – AFP, April 20, 2014

Federer ousts ailing Djokovic in Monaco semis

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 08:15 AM PDT

April 19, 2014

Roger Federer (pic) beat an injured Novak Djokovic 7-5 6-2 to set up an all-Swiss Monte Carlo Masters final with Stanislas Wawrinka after the Australian Open champion ousted David Ferrer 6-1 7-6 (3) today.

Holder Djokovic resisted for one set before pain in his right wrist was just too much to bear for the second-seeded Serb who bowed out on the first match point after one hour 14 minutes.

The much-awaited clash lived up to expectations early on, with 17-times grand slam champion Federer saving two set points on serve at 5-4.

Federer, who has never won the Monte Carlo Masters, broke in the following game and pocketed the set with an ace before Djokovic went to his chair holding his right wrist.

The second set was a stroll for the Swiss who produced a series of forehand winners as he moved 18-16 up in his head-to-head record against Djokovic.

Earlier, third seed Wawrinka showed no mercy against the giant-killing Ferrer.

The Swiss raced through the first set and kept his composure in the second when the Spaniard raised his level.

Sixth seed Ferrer, who knocked out eight-times French Open champion and world number one Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals on Friday, was on the back foot throughout. – Reuters, April 19, 2014.

Angry Sandro not good enough, says Hotspur’s Sherwood

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 07:41 AM PDT

April 19, 2014

Brazil international midfielder Sandro has lost his place in the Tottenham Hotspur squad because he is "not good enough" to get into the team, manager Tim Sherwood (pic) said today.

"He's not selected at the moment. I don't think he's good enough to be in the side at the moment," Sherwood told BT Sport after his side's 3-1 win over Fulham at White Hart Lane in the Premier League.

"When he shows me that he is, and he's at a level with the other players, then he'll get back in the squad, but at the moment he's not up to the level of being in our squad."

Sandro took to Twitter to express his displeasure at being left out of the match-day squad for Fulham's visit.

"Good morning Guys, just to let you know that i'm not injured !" he wrote. "Hope that we can win the game today."

Asked for his reaction to Sandro's tweet, Sherwood said: "Is it frustrating? He's got his own reasons for doing it. He's got a good following. The fans like him here. I like Sandro. I like him as a player."

"But at the end of the day, he has to work hard to get back on the side. I only pick players based on who I think can win the game, and at the moment he's not good enough to be in the squad, so he's left out."

Sherwood's position at the Tottenham helm continues to be the source of speculation in the British media, amid reports the north London club are looking to hire a more seasoned head coach.

Asked about his chances of remaining in the job next season, he replied: "I'm not convinced, I'm not unconvinced. I'm not shocked by the speculation. I'm shocked it's only one manager (linked with the job) today!"

"It's once a day. You take it on the chin. The club have decided not to say anything on that and it's not for me to comment."

Fulham's defeat kept them in the relegation zone, but although there are only three games of the season remaining, manager Felix Magath remains bullish about their chances of avoiding the drop.

"If we had got any points here, it would have been an extra point for us," said the German.

"We have to win our home games and I think we can manage it." – AFP, April 19, 2014.

No comment on Bieber deportation petition, says White House

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 06:30 PM PDT

April 19, 2014

Troubled pop star Justin Bieber (pic) has had high-profile run-ins with the law recently but the White House doesn't appear set to add to his growing catalogue of woes.

Just under 275,000 people have added their names to a petition on the White House website calling for the Canadian's deportation from the United States, easily surpassing the threshold of 100,000 signatures required for presidential consideration.

But the White House said yesterday that it would not comment, citing terms in its "We the People" programme that allows it to decline certain petitions.

Instead, it sought to use the attention given to the petition to argue that an overhaul of the immigration system would spur the US economy and shrink Washington's ballooning deficit by nearly IS$1 trillion during the next 20 years.

"For those of you counting at home, that's 12.5 billion concert tickets – or 100 billion copies of Mr Bieber's debut album," the White House said.

"You better believe it," it added, an apparent reference to the "Belieber" term used to describe Bieber's legions of adoring, mostly pre-teen female fans.

The petition was created by a "J.A." in Detroit on January 23, the day Bieber was busted in Miami Beach for alleged impaired driving and illegal drag racing in a flashy Italian sports car.

"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," it says.

"We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive and drug-abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked.

"He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."

Bieber, 20, is understood to be living and working in the US under a renewable O-1 visa for entertainers, rather than a green card for permanent resident status.

It remains unclear whether Bieber's visa would be affected by his arrest.

Bieber also faces an assault charge in Canada for allegedly striking a limousine driver on the back of the head. – AFP, April 19, 2014

Rap star Chris Brown to go on trial Monday

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 05:50 PM PDT

April 19, 2014

Hip-hop star Chris Brown (pic) will stand trial on Monday for an alleged assault outside a trendy hotel in Washington.

If convicted, Brown could face up to six months in jail and a US$1,000 fine.

Brown, 24, appeared in court yesterday in the US capital in a crisp suit that made him look more like a genteel Wall Street banker than an actor, dancer and rap artist.

He stood with his hands by his side as Judge Patricia Wynn instructed him to return next week for the start of his trial.

In court supporting him was his mother Joyce Hawkins, friend and model Karrueche Tran and rapper Bow Wow, who the day before moderated a discussion with First Lady Michelle Obama at Washington's Howard University.

Wynn put back the trial date after deciding she needed the Easter weekend to reach a verdict in a related case involving Brown's bodyguard Chris Hollosy, 35, outside the downtown W Hotel on October 27 last year.

"I have to be confident about my verdict. I need to take my time," the District of Columbia Superior Court judge said.

Prosecutors say Parker Adams, 20, from a Washington suburb, was punched in the nose by Brown and Hollosy when he tried to get a picture with Brown alongside two women.

Lawyers for the bodyguard questioned Adams' side of the story, citing a pending US$3 million civil suit that he has filed against the two defendants.

Brown, who took the Grammy award for best R&B album in 2012 with "F.A.M.E.", was sentenced to five years' probation and community service, as well as domestic violence counselling, after he pleaded guilty to assaulting R&B diva Rihanna in February 2009.

Federal marshalls brought him overland to Washington this week from Los Angeles, where on March 17 a federal judge remanded him in custody for allegedly breaching the terms of his probation in the Rihanna case, pending an April 23 hearing.

Just three days earlier, Brown had been booted out of a rehab facility in Malibu, California where he reputedly declared during a group therapy session that he was "good at using guns and knives." – AFP, April 19, 2014

British filmmaker opens Moscow show under Ukraine shadow

Peter Greenaway's multi-media exhibition on Russian Avant-Garde movement was missing British presence. – AFP pic, April 19, 2014Peter Greenaway's multi-media exhibition on Russian Avant-Garde movement was missing British presence. – AFP pic, April 19, 2014It was meant to be a highlight of a year-long British-Russian cultural exchange, but a huge multi-media exhibition by British filmmaker Peter Greenaway has failed to escape tensions over the Ukraine crisis.

The event, which showcases the short-lived but powerful Russian Avant-Garde movement of the late 19th-early 20th century, opened Monday – with British officials conspicuously absent.

Greenaway, 72, celebrated worldwide for films like "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover", and his wife, Dutch director Saskia Boddeke, together created the video installation for the UK-Russia Year of Culture in 2014.

Both were on hand for the gala opening but "unfortunately for known reasons, there is no political presence of our British partners," Russian President Vladimir Putin's cultural representative Mikhail Shvydkoi told a news conference.

Without naming Ukraine, a British embassy spokesman confirmed there had been no senior official at the show. "In light of current circumstances, we are reviewing all engagements with Russia on an event-by-event basis," the spokesman said.

The exchange, supported by both the British Council and the Russian culture ministry, will also see a landmark visit to Moscow by London's Royal Ballet among other events. All was planned well before the Ukraine crisis plunged relations between Russia and the West to a post-Cold War low.

Shvydkoi, however, insisted at the opening that "all our cultural and educational links with foreign countries... will remain, despite the complex political events".

The artist himself steered away from politics. "Religions change every week and politics change every afternoon. Whatever the current situation, it's not permanent," Greenaway told AFP at the opening.

"One thing continually holds its value for me, and that's cultural experience," he said.

Entitled "The Golden Age of the Russian Avant-Garde", the show at the Manege exhibition hall in central Moscow outside the Kremlin walls focuses on Russia's iconoclastic Russian painters, writers and film directors of the late 19th-early 20th century. Their radical experiments rejected the period's academic norms, before Soviet authorities declared that art must be representational and depict the lives of workers.

"The Russian avant-garde never really became the establishment. They were censored out of existence," Greenaway told journalists at the opening.

'A very subjective event'

The artist, who switched to video art a decade ago after declaring that "cinema is dead", created the libretto for the expo which plays out on 18 giant screens where actors portray 12 key figures from revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky to artist Kazimir Malevich.

Greenaway and Boddeke used Malevich's 1915 painting "Black Square" as their visual theme, echoed in the shape of stands and throw cushions for viewers, while a paintbrush drags black paint across the screens.

Known for pushing limits, Greenaway has merged past and present with the show's multimedia approach. He acknowledged that Russians might "be very surprised" and disagree with the couple's vision of the Russian avant-garde.

"Somebody... suggested that 'That's not the way I imagined Mayakovsky, that 'That's not the way Malevich appeals to us as Russian people.'"

"We make absolutely no apology for it whatsoever – a very subjective event," said Greenaway, sporting a pinstriped jacket and firing out anecdotes.

"When you go in, please immerse yourself and take your time," said Boddeke, recommending people spend 1 1/2 hours inside.

Reviewers praised the show but some were disappointed that it was not more "daring".

The exhibition "tells viewers in an accessible and effective way about the brightest years of Russian avant-garde art, long canonised all over the world, but alas, not in Russia," critic Anton Dolin said on Vesti FM radio.

Dolin said the show presented the artists "in the guise of hipsters" and "is guilty of populism and inevitable superficiality."

For the business daily Vedomosti, meanwhile, "the exhibition materials talk a lot about the innovation of this project, but alas, it is more like a popular fairground attraction than an aesthetic breakthrough."
The show runs to May 18. – AFP, April 19, 2014

The big Red horse still on track into the final lap

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 09:46 PM PDT

April 19, 2014

As a player, Shebby Singh won everything there was to win in Malaysia football, and represented the country on the international stage.

As we start another weekend, albeit an extended weekend, in the English Premier League, it is quite difficult to get all excited.

No doubt, there are interesting fixtures but following up on a spectacle as last weekend when Liverpool beat Manchester City will be quite a feat.

Expect Liverpool to beat Norwich City (Sunday, 7pm, Ch.810/831), despite the Canaries having a new man in charge. The desperation at Carrow Road plays very nicely into the hands of a marauding Liverpool side that will take advantage of the shaky situation.

Brendan Rodgers will be rubbing his hands in glee at the prospect of another open attacking game, and one step closer to what amounts to a stunning maiden Premier League title.

Over at Stamford Bridge tonight (Chelsea v Sunderland, 12.30am, Ch.810/831), The Boring One will enjoy the visit of a knackered Sunderland, lest we forget their heroics at the Etihad, that will be crawling never mind break into a trot at consecutive high-powered matches.

Jose Mourinho will surely not complain about the fixtures for his "little horse" this time. The bright spot for Sunderland has been Gus Poyet, who has planted a playing style that is only exposed by the players' individual limitations.

And Manchester City will hang on to third, as even a loss at home to West Bromwich Albion on Monday night (Tuesday, 3am, Ch.810/831) sees no threat from the Arsenal.

A loss at home did I say? That is going to be unacceptable after the comeback draw against Sunderland. The excuses offered up by Manuel Pellegrini would make a hod carrier blush! Even the oldest profession in the world would be having a chuckle!

Poor babies... tired! Fatigued! Gimme a break for God's sake! The ball has been dropped at the blue side of Manchester, and playing catch-up at this point of the season is something the owners were not looking forward to.

Do we really get excited about Everton versus Manchester United? Okay, let's try to get really get excited about Everton versus Manchester United (Sunday, 11.10pm, Ch.810/831)!

A win for Everton, depending on the Hull City versus Arsenal result earlier, may or may not put the Toffees in fourth, but it does keeps them optimistic for Champions League football next season.

It went wrong for Everton in midweek and expect a reaction, plus a certain former manager's return to add spark to a league fast fading into the twilight of the season.

Roberto Martinez would love to do the double over his predecessor, and David Moyes will be looking to get into Europe next season if talk of an ultimatum bears fruit.

All action expected in Cardiff City as the Bluebirds attempt three points against Stoke City tonight (10pm). Home is not the fortress that was expected, and eight home losses quite remain the reason why Cardiff simply is not good enough for the Premier League. Perhaps it was a season too soon for the fast-rising Bluebirds.

At White Hart Lane tonight (Spurs v Fulham, 7.45pm, Ch.810/831), Tottenham Hotspur could do well to finish the season on a high, but there is really no point in breaking their necks to get fifth and Europa League.

The Spurs need a good pre-season for Tim Sherwood to start on a level playing field in establishing himself as a Premier League manager, even if some high-profile European manager is taking over for next season.

Having had to take the bitter with the sweet, Sherwood will value consistency from the team and continuity from the club.

A home win against Fulham will keep the bitter old pros off Sherwood's back, but a clean sheet should be priority for a team that leaks more than Wikileaks.

The Manager of the Season takes his team to Upton Park to face a Sam Allardyce-inspired West Ham (West Ham v Crystal Palace, 10pm).

Indeed, Tony Pulis must surely bag the accolade in my opinion as he has transformed Crystal Palace into a combative unit with a refreshing outlook on attacking play.

Pulis has for so long been classified as a "route one" exponent but has proven to be otherwise. His Stoke City teams were built on raw aggression and power but inheriting a team that had neither has proven Pulis is a very adaptable manager.

It was nearly the impossible job after Ian Holloway exited with his tail between his legs, but up stepped Tony Pulis and hope he gets all three points this weekend.

Enjoy the football! – April 19, 2014.

Kedudukan Malaysia hampir semua bidang - ‘mid-table divisyen empat’

Posted: 18 Apr 2014 08:14 PM PDT

April 19, 2014

– 19 April, 2014.

KDN selaras pemberian kuasa komandan Esscom kepada polis, tentera

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 02:53 AM PDT

April 19, 2014

– Bernama, 19 April, 2014.

15 jemaah umrah negatif jangkitan MERS-CoV, kata Subramaniam

Posted: 19 Apr 2014 02:43 AM PDT

April 19, 2014

– Bernama, 19 April, 2014.
