Keane out of Ireland’s Euro 2012 decider against Armenia

Posted: 10 Oct 2011 08:49 AM PDT

DUBLIN, Oct 10 – Ireland's captain and leading scorer Robbie Keane has been ruled out of the deciding Euro 2012 qualifier against Armenia today because of an abductor muscle problem.

Keane, 31 (picture), played the full 90 minutes in Friday's 2-0 win in Andorra but complained of soreness in his abductor muscle during the early hours of Saturday.

Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni said after Saturday's training session that the Los Angeles Galaxy striker was a "strong doubt" for the game in Dublin and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed today he would miss the match.

"Robbie Keane was released from the squad on Sunday morning due to injury and is devastated to miss Armenia. He will be there tomorrow to support the lads," an FAI spokesman said.

Simon Cox will replace Keane in attack with Stephen Kelly and Richard Dunne coming back into the side. They will replace Stephen Ward, who is suspended, and Darren O'Dea.

Ireland go into the Group B game in second place behind Russia. They can either win the group, finish second, or, if they lose to Armenia, be eliminated with the visitors instead making the playoffs as runners-up.

Striker Jonathan Walters meanwhile has joined up with the squad after an ankle injury forced him to miss the Andorra match.

Trapattoni named the following side to face Armenia:

Shay Given; John O'Shea, Richard Dunne, Sean St Ledger, Stephen Kelly; Damien Duff, Glenn Whelan, Keith Andrews, Aiden McGeady; Kevin Doyle, Simon Cox. – Reuters

Japan goal machine Okazaki ‘starving’ for goals

Posted: 10 Oct 2011 06:35 AM PDT

OSAKA, Oct 10 – Japan striker Shinji Okazaki promised to lift the gloom following a string of poor displays by his side in tomorrow's home World Cup qualifier against Tajikistan.

The pint-sized VfB Stuttgart player said he had recovered from a knee problem and would be back amongst the goals as the Blue Samurai look to take a firm grip on Group C.

"I score goals for a living," Okazaki (picture), who has scored seven goals in five matches under coach Alberto Zaccheroni, told Japanese media today.

"I'm starving for goals but it's all about the team. I'm just a forward. Scoring goals is my job."

Japan disappointed in last Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Vietnam, but Zaccheroni dismissed talk of a crisis in front of goal.

"Yes we have only scored three goals in our last three matches," the Italian told a news conference on the eve of the clash with Tajikistan in Osaka.

"But we're ready. We made a lot of chances against North Korea and we had our chances against Uzbekistan too. It's not as if we have not been scoring in my 15 games as coach."

Unbeaten since Zaccheroni took charge last October, Japan have made life difficult for themselves in their opening two games in the third round of Asian 2014 qualifiers.

A stoppage-time win over North Korea at home was followed last month by a desperately poor performance in a 1-1 draw with Uzbekistan in Tashkent.

Japan's Inter Milan defender Yuto Nagatomo warned that Tajikistan could prove dangerous opponents.

"They are hanging on for dear life in the group so we have to be wary," he said. "We need an early goal so they come at us and we get more space to play."

In his eagerness not to trigger a backlash from the Japanese, Tajikistan coach Alimzhon Rafikov almost wrote off his team's chances of producing an upset.

"We are not kidding ourselves about how difficult it will be," he said. "We might only have a 1,000-1 chance of winning but we want to give a good account of ourselves."

Japan and Uzbekistan both have four points in Group C with North Korea on three. Tajikistan have lost both their matches. – Reuters

China’s urban tide to grow by 100m in 10 years

BEIJING, Oct 10 — More than 100 million rural Chinese people will settle in towns and cities in the next decade, testing provision of welfare and services as a new generation of migrants turn their backs on farming, according to a new government report.

The National Population and Family Planning Commission report forecast that by 2020, China's urban population would pass 800 million, and many of the new residents are rural migrants who lack old-age and medical insurance in the towns and cities they want to call home, media reports said today.

The study, based on survey data from 2010, is the latest to underscore how important, and how challenging, the ramifications of China's tide of urbanisation are.

"Our country still faces many challenges in achieving healthy urbanisation," said the report, according to a summary from the Xinhua news agency.

"At present, we still have not formed a sensible array of cities and towns, and overall urban capacity urgently needs to be strengthened," it said.

"The migrant population strongly desires to be absorbed into the areas where they live, but there is a stark conflict between supply and demand of urban public services."

China's census last year found the country had 1.34 billion people, and 670 million were residents of towns and cities.

Many new urbanites are young rural migrants with no plans to return to villages and farming after years in factories and on building sites, unlike their parents' generation.

Although their wages have risen in recent years, this "new generation" of migrants also needs better housing, healthcare and schooling opportunities. The report found 52 per cent of Chinese rural migrants had no social welfare insurance.

In June, migrant workers rioted in far southern China's manufacturing belt, trashing government offices and police vehicles after a pregnant peddler was roughed up by guards, triggering anger about mistreatment.

A string of strikes at Japanese-owned vehicle parts makers last year also showed the growing assertiveness of younger Chinese workers.

China has about 153 million migrant workers living outside their home towns, and by 2009, 58.4 per cent of them were "new generation" migrants born in 1980 or after, according to an earlier National Bureau of Statistics survey.

The latest report found that 76.3 per cent of this "new generation" of migrants had no plans to return to the areas they came from, and most of those that did have plans to return wanted to find jobs in towns, not return to farming. — Reuters

Jackson children ensure tribute concert is a success

CARDIFF, Oct 10 – Michael Jackson's three children helped 40,000 fans honour the late pop legend Saturday as the "Michael Forever" show in Wales overcame a troubled build up to end on a high note.

There had been doubts over whether the tribute show would go ahead after months of controversy, but the presence of Prince, 14, Paris, 13, and nine-year-old Blanket along with star line-up ensured a celebratory atmosphere.

Host Jamie Foxx joined Jackson brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie on stage at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium for a triumphant rendition of "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" to send most of the crowd home happy.

Headline acts earlier included US pop diva Christina Aguilera, Motown legend Smokey Robinson, British boy-band JLS and soul icon Gladys Knight.

Michael Jackson's sister La Toya said afterwards "Michael was enjoying the show" and that "having all these wonderful artists coming together shows the children how special their father was".

But youngest child Blanket appeared overawed by the occasion, and had to be helped out by his older siblings while introducing R&B star Beyonce's performance via satellite from the US.

The three children wore outfits inspired by different periods of their father's career.

The side show of family feuding, rumours of feeble ticket sales and a last-minute headline cancellation threatened to overshadow the main event, but despite a downscaling, those that were present made sure the empty seats went largely unnoticed.

"It was wonderful," said Joanne Webb from nearby Swansea. "I don't know why they had it in Cardiff but it's been great for the area, seeing all these people coming out and looking so happy.

"Seeing the Jacksons was a highlight, you just don't think you're going to see these people live," she added.

Some fans and members of the Jackson family had questioned the timing of the concert with the trial of Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of Jackson's involuntary manslaughter, ongoing in Los Angeles.

Eva Vidal, the president of Spain's Michael Jackson fan club, said that it had been a positive evening, but the timing was a problem.

"It was good but would have been better if it hadn't been on this date," said Vidal, who made the trip over from Spain with two friends.

Vidal, who was wearing a T-Shirt emblazoned "Who is behind Conrad?", stressed that she had come over to pay tribute, but also to fight for justice.

"We think there is a conspiracy," she explained. "We have seen the trials and everybody is blaming Conrad but we believe there are others involved".

US R&B star Ne-Yo kicked off the show with a cover of Jackson's seminal hit "Billie Jean" complete with dazzling white socks and a passable attempt at a Moonwalk.

"This is not about controversy, this is about celebrating his music and life," the performer said to loud cheers.

The 75,000 capacity stadium in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is better known as the home of Welsh rugby but for one night sporting rough-and-tumble made way for showbiz glitz.

Global megastar Beyonce sent her own tribute, performing "I Wanna Be Where You Are" from the US.

Many fans were dressed in Jackson's trademark top hat and red leather jacket while Jackson's famous high-pitched "woo-hoo" reverberated around the arena and inside the stadium's atrium.

The "Thriller" star died at his Los Angeles home in 2009 aged 50.

The event was the brainchild of Jackson brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie, sister La Toya and 81-year-old mother Katherine but siblings Jermaine, Randy and Janet were opposed.

There has also been dispute over where proceeds from the concert will eventually end up.

A portion of the takings will go the AIDS Project Los Angeles and Prince's Trust – both charities supported by Michael Jackson – but many fans have been angered by reports that the Jackson family themselves stood to make a profit. – AFP

YouTube launches online movie rentals in Britain

Posted: 10 Oct 2011 04:28 AM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 10 – YouTube on Friday began letting people in Britain rent movies for viewing online at the Google-owned video-sharing website.

"We've got some cracking films to keep everyone entertained through the upcoming winter months and beyond," YouTube business product manager Matteo Vallone said in a blog post announcing the launch in Britain.

More than a thousand full-length films from studios in Hollywood or Britain are available for streaming online as rentals at youtube.com/movies, according to Vallone.

Titles in the film library ranged from Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" to Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life."

YouTube launched online film rental services in the United States and Canada earlier this year as it continued to expand from an online locale for sharing homemade videos to a commercial site for online movie and television streaming. – AFP

Hypocrisy hampers deficit reduction agenda

Posted: 09 Oct 2011 05:00 PM PDT

OCT 10 — If one throws a dart randomly at those pieces of paper pinned on the wall, there is a good chance the dart will land on a handout provision. Those papers are the 2012 Budget.

The Budget, as tabled by the Najib administration, is an election budget. Civil servants, teachers, the police force, the Armed Forces, pensioners and others will get their share regardless of justifiability.

Meanwhile, the subsidy liberalisation programme that the Najib administration was so gung-ho about earlier has taken a back seat, half-baked and emitting a stench called hypocrisy.

Idris Jala, a man who unproductively exaggerated that Malaysia would go bankrupt if the government expenditure continued to rise, now praises the Budget of goodies.

Such is the loyalty of some men to ideas and principles. The wind blows and the mind changes. There is no principle to stick to because only political convenience matters.

Never mind the contradiction and hypocrisy. Voters have a short memory span. Give them money and they will go gaga. It is all about winning elections, not honesty and consistency.

The financial position of the federal government could be in a better shape if the administration had necessary honesty and consistency instead of bending backwards to accommodate the monster of populism.

Without the populism, the fiscal deficit for year 2012 — the Najib administration projects to be 4.7 per cent of nominal gross domestic product (or RM33.8 billion in absolute terms) — could be lowered considerably.

It could possibly go down as far as 3.7 per cent of nominal GDP if all the subsidies, one-time transfer payments and other election-related handouts are flushed down the drain.

Admittedly, the drastic reduction will be a shock to the system that none might want to experience amid the present global economic uncertainty.

Yet, in times of uncertainty, it is only prudent to save for a rainy day even within political needs. This is doubly true given that regardless what was said and done about the importance of domestic demand, external demand is still wildly important to the domestic economy.

Furthermore, a number of analysts have already voiced out that the government's revenue figures are too optimistic for a pessimistic world. That is all the more reason for observers to be conservative with the federal government's finance.

The fiscal deficit can be brought down still lower even with political considerations in mind. Removing the RM3,000 one-off gift to 4,300 individuals, another RM3,000 one-off transfer to an expected 3.4 million individuals and the KAR1SMA programme that will cost RM1.2 billion off the Budget while keeping the bloated subsidy regime intact, the deficit for the year 2012 could stand at 4.4 per cent out of nominal GDP instead of the higher projected 4.7 per cent.

One could argue that these programmes are welfare enhancing, hence they deserve to be written into the 2012 Budget. In order to forward that argument, however, one has to believe in it first. Honesty is required.

Unfortunately, many of those within the government who now say these are caring measures are exactly those who accused these same measures of being irresponsibly populist. This suggests one thing. Their only moral compass involves one question: where did the idea come from?

If it is from across the aisle, it is destructively populist. If it comes from their side, the same measures are caring.

This is not a sincere moral system, for the currency is political convenience. The slogan is "win the election and forget anything else."

If honesty were of any value, these programmes — regardless of whether they are labelled populist or caring — should have given way to a deficit reduction agenda. With honesty and consistency, the federal government would have a smaller deficit, so that there is less taxation for all of us with all else being the same.

Mantera Sanjivini

Posted: 09 Oct 2011 04:41 PM PDT

Semasa berlaku sengketa, kedua-dua kelompok memiliki pakar rujuk masing-masing.

"Kita mesti lakukan sesuatu!

"Kau gunakanlah apa cara sekali pun (kecuali tuduhan diliwat?).

Sukracharya mempunyai seorang anak bernama Devayani.

Maka, bibir Sukracharya mula terkumat-kamit membaca mantera Sanjivini.

Sejurus selepas itu, Kacha kelihatan berjalan pulang. Keadaannya sangat normal.

Sukracharya terpaksa 'berkorban' demi anaknya.

Akhirnya, Sukracharya tiada pilihan lain.

Terpulanglah bagaimana anda mahu mentafsirnya mengikut perkembangan semasa.
