Chicken-based eateries rule the London roost

LONDON, Oct 6 —  Chicken is taking a starring role in London's dining scene with a slew of recent restaurant openings giving the protein the headline act and a spate of upcoming eateries set to do the same.

According to a report from industry website Big Hospitality in the UK, poultry-based menus are widely trending in London-town, thanks to the protein's versatility but also due to American influences where deep-fried chicken, in particular, is experiencing a major comeback.

In London, poultry is being served in all its form – roasted rotisserie, deep-fried and ground into burgers – and elevated to gourmet status.

Mark Hix's Tramshed, for instance, bases its entire menu on family-style roast chicken dinners, which can be served with fries, buttered autumnal vegetables and Yorkshire puddings.

Hix is a well-known chef, cookbook author and regular food columnist for The Independent and Esquire magazine.

Similarly, like its namesake, Chicken Shop offers whole, half and quarter chickens with sides like corn on the cob, fries and coleslaw, while popular menu favourites at Rita's Bar & Dining include wings and fried chicken sandwiches.

Meanwhile, other poultry-themed restaurants slated to open in London include Wishbone, a fried chicken and beer eatery, and Chooks which will serve chicken in quarters, halves and whole, much like Chicken Shop.

Londoners are also set to become better acquainted with a rotisserie chicken concept chain called Clockjack Oven, which has plans to open 15 sites in the city. — AFP-Relaxnews

Bayern beat Hoffenheim to maintain perfect start

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 08:53 AM PDT

BERLIN, Oct 6 – Bayern Munich made it seven wins out of seven in the Bundesliga today as two goals from Franck Ribery led them to a one-sided 2-0 win over a toothless Hoffenheim.

Having slumped to a shock defeat at BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Tuesday, Bayern barely broke sweat in a tepid encounter at the Allianz Arena.

Dutchman Ibrahim Affelay scored his first goal for Schalke 04 in their 3-0 win over VfL Wolfsburg, who are managed by Schalke's former coach Felix Magath, and Hamburg SV continued their climb up the table by winning 1-0 at Greuther Fuerth.

Bayern are top with 21 points, five ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt, who visit Borussia Moenchengladbach tomorrow, while Schalke are third with 14. – Reuters

Djokovic to meet Tsonga in China final

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 07:45 AM PDT

BEIJING, Oct 6 – Top seed Serb Novak Djokovic brushed aside German Florian Mayer today to set up a final clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the China Open.

World number two Djokovic beat Mayer 6-1 6-4 in the semi-final to stay on course for his third successive title in Beijing.

"He's been playing really well," Djokovic said about his opponent for tomorrow's final. "There's no secrets between each other, between us. I mean, we (have) played many times, played a lot of important matches on the big stage.

"He's a very powerful player, big serve, big forehand, and if that works, he can win against anybody on any surface, to be honest.

"So there is no clear favourite, I think, in tomorrow's match. We have both been winning quite comfortably. It's going to be a good final hopefully for the tournament."

Frenchman Tsonga kept alive his hopes of qualifying for November's season-ending World Tour finals in London when he reached the final after Feliciano Lopez retired with a wrist injury while trailing 6-1 4-1 in the first semi-final.

"I played really well," third seed Tsonga told reporters after reaching his 15th Tour final.

"I felt really good on the court. I'm just happy today with my game. I'm sure I will play good tennis in final." – Reuters

George Town starts Asia’s first ever Business Improvement District Scheme

GEORGE TOWN,Oct 6 - The rejuvenation of an urban area cannot really be left only to the authorities. This has become clear to businesses and residents living around the Komtar area. Taking the lead from other cities that have succeeded in reviving degenerated areas, they are now working with the state government to turn their district into Penang's next attraction.

Komtar, or Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak, remains one of the most recognisable symbols of Penang.

Although an unmistakable landmark, it is also ironically a "forgotten" building, only a shadow of its former self. Back in the 1990s, Komtar was bustling with traders, shoppers, workers and students.

This was no surprise as it was the only "mall" of its kind and size in Penang.

Believe it or not, Komtar was the place to be seen for teenagers. Today, the area looks like it's still stuck in the past, refusing to adapt to 21st century sophistication.

Years of neverending traffic activity has smothered the area in a permanent cloud of smoke and dust, staining the original white buildings yellow.

The local teenagers and young adults who once gathered there have now been replaced with immigrants; the youthfulness of those days is replaced by the malaise associated with tired and old faces. The vibrancy seems to have moved to more popular arcades like Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall.

The area has changed so much that the previous Penang state government actually wanted to move out of the building. Luckily for the one-time tallest building in Southeast Asia, that plan has since been called off.

Something obviously needs to be done to prevent the area from deteriorating any further. Penang is of course not alone in facing this issue of a degenerating neighbourhood; in cities such as New York and London, one way through which governments and city councils have succeeded in revitalising urban centres has been to tap into the private sector through the Business Improvement District Scheme (BIDS).

BIDS originated in North America and exists in different forms. Essentially BIDS is a joint-effort of business interests coming together to achieve public good.

In short, stakeholders in a geographical space called a district come together to revive the place. BIDS has succeeded in cities all around the world. Downtown Washington DC, for example, was a desolate office park.

The place faced issues similar to those we have at Komtar, such as dirt, dullness and crime. At one point, Washington DC was known as the "murder capital of the world". Realising the gravity of the situation, the mayor and city council launched a Business Improvement District (BID) in the area to try to save it.

Transforming Downtown DC took some time, but eventually changes started to happen, and the place started cleaning itself up and new buildings were constructed.

Today, the Downtown DC BID is a flourishing environment with pedestrians and small businesses nicely populating the once desolate place. This is no surprise, considering the milestones in social development in the area such as affordable housing, renovated public schools, the creation of thousands of new jobs and other economic development projects.

Besides that, crime in the area went down by a staggering 48 per cent and the BID even won the city's Sustainability Award by greening the area and making leaps in reducing energy consumption.

In an attempt to emulate the success of the BIDS, Think City in Penang proposed to set up a BID surrounding the Komtar area. In December 2009, this Khazanah-funded urban regeneration agency hosted Donald Hyslop, the chairman of the Better Bankside BIDS, and he introduced the idea of BIDS to stakeholders within the Komtar area and in Little India.

Hyslop's visit was made possible through a joint-venture between Think City and the British Council to bring innovative urban solutions to Penang.

Hyslop's visit received positive feedback because a BID seemed to be the viable way of creating a sustainable platform for urban regeneration, and most importantly there was potential revenue from visitors.

In December 2009, a BIDS pro-tem committee was formed consisting of the state government, MPPP, Ivory Properties, the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), Gama, Prangin Mall and Heng Lee, with Think City acting as the secretariat.

This was the first time ever that different businesses in the area got together to help augment local government services.

A concept plan for the George Town BIDS was drawn up, involving 85.23 acres enclosing Jalan Dato' Keramat, Jalan Penang, Jalan Magazine and Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong.

A project of this scale involves a lot of work, and to ensure its success, comprehensive research was undertaken to establish the "baseline" before the team could convince the stakeholders in the area.

In November 2011, the George Town BIDS pro-tem committee was finally ready to put up a conceptual scheme for area improvement for public feedback at Komtar Walk.

Roving teams were also sent to Ivory Times Square and Gama. All the residents living around the BID area received the necessary information through flyers and brochures.

The public exhibition and survey at Komtar Walk received very positive feedback from the community. Additionally, the exhibition was also an outreach programme to foster greater understanding about BIDS.

The findings showed that the community agreed that some form of regeneration programme was needed in the area. The BIDS site needed to be clean, safe, less congested, friendlier to activities and more inclusive.

They began imagining the Komtar area with greenery creating pleasant sceneries of both nature and urban life, with pedestrian-friendly roads and smooth traffic.

The public basically aspired to emulate public spaces that worked, citing examples like New York Times Square and Singapore's famous Orchard Road.

The George Town BIDS (GT BIDS) company was formed in June 2012. Led by PDC general manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar, GT BIDS plans to make this dream a reality by having a standardised sidewalk in the whole area which would be both eco and disabled friendly.

Traffic along the streets has always been crowded but increasing car parks and improving public transportation will hopefully solve this problem.

GT BIDS wants to create a people-friendly environment where shopping families can spend the evening, by improving the security and comfort of the area.

Camera surveillance may be a solution, but there are also plans to hire BIDS ambassadors to patrol the area to maintain security and also to help tourists or shoppers find their way. A wayfinding system will be implemented in the whole BIDS area as well in order to further demarcate the area. The possibilities for improvements are endless.

GT BIDS will eventually employ staff to manage the area. For now, stakeholders have been working together to design a logo for the company.

It is an important first step towards seeing how these different businesses can work in a group setting. We can expect to see more greenery along Jalan Dato Keramat.

Work is already underway to have trees planted. It is the first greening project in George Town BID and its success will dictate how other greening projects will be run. Stakeholders are also planning to add some excitement to the area by putting up decorative lighting along the roads.

Decorations like this will give George Town BID sophistication and a facelift.

A lot of work remains to be done before we can compare the Komtar area to Times Square or Orchard Road but cooperation between stakeholders shows promising signs that George Town BID can become the next landmark for Penang.

The success of the project will generate more business for its members and will spur growth in Penang. Perhaps more importantly, having taken the initiative to form Asia's first BID, the pioneering members of GT BIDS have shown that once again "Penang leads" in urban innovation in Malaysia and the region.

Avoid excess coffee to keep vision sharp and ward off eye disease

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 12:51 AM PDT

LONDON, Oct 6 — A new study suggests limiting caffeine intake to avoid developing serious eye disease and vision loss after finding a link between coffee drinking habits and glaucoma.

Based on previously reported findings among Scandinavian populations, US researchers from Harvard University carried out a meta-analysis examining the profiles of about 120,180 men and women aged 40 and older who provided information on their caffeinated beverage intake.

Responses were compared against their medical records to determine the cases of exfoliation glaucoma, which contributes to elevated pressure and can lead to damage of the optic nerve.

Exfoliation glaucoma occurs when a whitish material builds up on the lens of the eye and, as its name implies, exfoliates or rubs off the colour of the iris, blocking fluids from leaving the eye.

Results showed that compared to non-caffeinated coffee drinkers, participants who drank three or more cups a day were at an increased risk of developing the eye disease. Interestingly, scientists say they found no associations with the consumption of other caffeinated beverages such as soda, tea, chocolate or decaffeinated coffee.

The US study, published in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, builds on previously reported studies which found a link between the caffeinated coffee consumption of Scandinavians and the increased risk of developing eye disease: Scandinavian populations have the highest rates of exfoliation glaucoma and also happen to be the highest coffee consumers in the world, researchers said.

The health findings surrounding coffee are mixed, as another study suggests that caffeinated coffee could lower the risk of the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, while another study claims that coffee drinkers have a lower rate of death from heart disease. — AFP/Relaxnews

LOS ANGELES, Oct 6 — Following in the footsteps of Transformers, G.I. Joe and Battleship, Hasbro has three other toy lines headed for the silver screen in Hungry Hungry Hippos, Action Man, and Monopoly, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Monopoly is first in line. Ridley Scott, who has shown interest in the project for the past five years, will produce the film, and the shooting is expected to start next year.

Action Man, the British version of Hasbro's action figure G.I. Joe, is also in the Hollywood pipeline, alongside popular board game Hungry Hungry Hippos, which will target a younger crowd.

These are the latest in a slew of toy and movie adaptation projects announced by Hasbro since the mid-2000s, with Risk, Ouija and Clue (which had already been turned into a movie in 1985) never getting off the ground, while Candyland (Sony Pictures) and Stretch Armstrong (Relativity Media) are expected to hit theatres by 2014. — AFP-Relaxnews

Facebook COO Sandberg’s book dated for March 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 6 — "I wrote Lean In so women can make more informed choices and increase their chances of making it to the top of any field or pursue any goal with gusto," explains Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in the press note for Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, now set for a March 12, 2013 release in North America and the UK.

Sandberg, like Yahoo! Inc CEO Marissa Meyer, is a Google alumnus who became a high profile business leader.

The book is intended to offer "ideas and tools to help women overcome obstacles," says Sheryl.

Those common obstacles may be "the result of sexism or institutional discrimination; our tendency to hold ourselves back, lack confidence, or lower our hands and voices; or our willingness to internalise messages that tell us it's wrong for women to be outspoken or powerful."

It's a book for men, too, specifically those "who want to understand the challenges women face so they can do their part to build an equal world." —  AFP/Relaxnews

Lagi tentang pilihan raya

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 05:27 PM PDT

Mereka tidak menuntut revolusi sistem pilihan raya seperti menukar sistem pilihan raya "first past the post" (FPTP) kepada sistem single non-transferable vote (SNTV).

So what movie do you want to watch next?

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 05:11 PM PDT

OCT 6 — I've been spending quite a lot of time in Singapore the past month or so. Being the film geek that I am, of course I used this opportunity to catch as many interesting movies as I could during my stay there.

Having earlier spent a few days there in August to catch The Beach Boys in concert, I already managed to catch Wes Anderson's latest film and surprise summer hit "Moonrise Kingdom", which was still playing in some cinemas there as late as last week.

Anyone who has followed the career of Wes Anderson will surely know that his movies are basically made to be seen on the big screen, in glorious widescreen as he's known for packing every inch of the screen with information.

Some critics will even go so far as to call his style as not having any "character depth", but more relying on "character design" to convey emotions and information about any particular character. The only film of his that did play in Malaysian cinemas, as far as I can remember, was "The Royal Tenenbaums", which I saw twice in the cinemas.

So it was in Singapore that I had to catch his other films on the big screen, like the trip I made there just to see "The Darjeeling Limited." Earlier this year I was even nuts enough to make a day trip there just to see the Indonesian action sensation "The Raid: Redemption" on the big screen, afraid that it might not even make it to cinemas here or that it will be heavily censored or even dubbed into English.

Spending a few weeks sporadically there, I realised that the movie choices over there sort of resemble the ones in the United Kingdom when I was a student there. Over here we're more or less spoilt for choice when it comes to Hollywood blockbusters, with us getting almost all the big Hollywood releases the same time they open in America, and in some cases even a few days earlier.

What I realised when I was browsing through the movie listings to check out what I'd want to see is that in Singapore they don't bring in as many blockbusters as we do here, and some of them one or two months later than us. But, they have quite a healthy variety of other titles, from arthouse movies to even mid-level indie titles making the rounds in their local cinemas.

I was basically astonished to see the poster for "The Taste of Money", the latest film from Korean auteur Im Sang Soo (who last made the hit remake "The Housemaid") in normal cinemas there, not arthouse ones.

They even had "Gangs Of Wasseypur", a two-part Indian gangster film that played at Cannes playing in some cinemas there. And I can't even begin to tell you how pleased I was to be able to catch Oliver Stone's latest film "Savages", beautifully projected on the biggest screen in the cineplex that I went to.

The amount of sex and violence in it will probably mean that it won't be making its way to cinemas here because of our strict censorship, but I somehow doubt it will make it here anyway if we didn't have that censorship hurdle simply because it's the sort of film that people won't know how to promote here, because it's definitely not your typical blockbuster.

It's a movie (an excellent one at that, easily one of Stone's best and hands down one of the year's most exuberant and entertaining) that lies somewhere in between your typical commercial thriller and Stone's trademark "issue" movies, albeit wrapped in some seriously delicious genre (and eye) candy.

More astonishing though was when I saw that one of the movies I most wanted to see this year, the latest one from Hong Kong indie star Pang Ho Cheung (who earlier this year released the bittersweet "Love In The Buff", sequel to one of my favourite romances of recent times "Love In The Puff") titled "Vulgaria", was also playing.

As the title already suggests, it's a movie that's shamelessly vulgar, with some of the most hilariously dirty verbal jokes that you'll ever hear in Asian movies, and not to mention running gags involving sex with a mule, fellatio using pop rocks candy and more.

It is absolutely vulgar, and oh so very funny that even the fact that it was dubbed into Mandarin (as opposed to its original Cantonese, why lah?) did not deter the almost packed cinema hall from laughing out loud at every dirty joke thrown at us. Both this and "Savages" were rated 21, a classification that's yet to exist here in Malaysia, but if creating this can mean us having access to more films that adults might want to see, I say why the hell not?

If neighbouring Singapore, with its smaller population compared to us, can afford to have a variety of movie distributors bringing in a wide variety of movies into cinemas there (don't even get me started on their DVD releases — they have beautifully packaged and extras-stacked official releases of films like "Melancholia", "We Need To Talk About Kevin" and "Animal Kingdom" for heaven's sake!), then surely we can afford to do the same, can't we?

* The views expressed here are the personal opinion of the columnist.

MCA perlu lebih banyak maklum balas mengenai pendidikan Cina

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 02:15 AM PDT
