Malaga to make official UEFA complaint over exit

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 08:46 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

alaga's Willy and his team mates appeal for off-side as Borussia Dortmund's Santana celebrates after scoring in Champions League quarter-final second leg soccer match in Dortmund. — Reuters picBARCELONA, April 10 — Malaga plan to make a formal complaint about the referee after Tuesday's last-gasp defeat at Borussia Dortmund cruelly denied the Champions League debutants a place in the last four.

The Qatar-owned club were leading the quarter-final, second leg 2-1 as the game went into stoppage time before Dortmund, who were held to a 0-0 draw in last week's first leg in Spain, equalised and then grabbed a 93rd-minute winner.

Replays showed several players from the Bundesliga team in offside positions in the build-up to the third goal and the normally restrained Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini slammed the match officials in his post-match news conference.

The club's director general, Vicente Casado, told reporters on Wednesday before flying back to Spain with the squad that Malaga would file a written complaint with soccer's European governing body UEFA about the refereeing.

"On this occasion we could not, or they did not want us to, get through," Pellegrini said. "After we went 2-1 ahead there was no refereeing," the Chilean added, although Eliseu's 82nd minute goal for the Spaniards also appeared to be offside.

"They forced us back with elbows and shoves. There were two sendings off that were not given, a double offside in the third goal which should not have counted.

"They said this was the best team in Europe and by the end they were hoofing long balls forward. We are leaving with very bitter feelings."

Casado said the performance of Scottish referee Craig Thomson and his officials had not been up to the level of a Champions League quarter-final.

"We are outraged," he said."Not only Malaga lost but football too. Our complaint is not directed at UEFA but at the refereeing that was absolutely not at the right level."

Winger Joaquin, who put Malaga ahead in the 25th minute, and club owner Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, a member of the Qatar royal family, were even more outspoken.

In a series of tweets on his official Twitter feed soon after the final whistle, Al Thani blamed the defeat on "racism" and called on UEFA to launch an inquiry.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino on Wednesday dismissed Al Thani's claim, telling reporters: "UEFA is not taking any racist action against any club.

"Now depending on what he has said or not said... I can understand if you lose a match in the 93rd minute then the emotions come up and you say things you have not really thought through and should not say," Infantino said at the Soccerex European forum in Manchester.

"I don't know how there could be any racist abuse from UEFA. How can he blame UEFA for racism when they (Malaga) lost the game from two late goals?"

Infantino added: "We will analyse his comments and the UEFA disciplinary inspectors will act if they have to act depending on what has been said."

Deeply unpopular

Joaquin, who scored malaga's first goal, suggested UEFA president Michel Platini may have had something to do with the defeat.

Platini is deeply unpopular in Malaga after UEFA slapped a ban on the club from competing in continental competition from next season due to delays in payments to creditors.

"We suspect Platini and all the rest of them who are involved," Joaquin told Spanish radio. "Because we are Malaga and not Real Madrid it's easier to do this to us."

Whatever conclusions are drawn about Tuesday's game, Malaga performed above expectations on their first foray into Europe's elite club competition but now need to put their disappointment behind them and focus on qualifying again for next season.

They have appealed against the UEFA ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Malaga are sixth in La Liga, four points behind Real Sociedad who occupy Spain's fourth Champions League qualification berth.

"We all made a super-human effort and going out of the competition because of a mistake like that is painful," their Paraguayan forward Roque Santa Cruz told Spanish television.

"We were four minutes away from the semi-finals and it was snatched away from us. Now we have to lift our spirits and tackle the rest of the season in the best possible way." — Reuters

Ronaldo guiding Real towards elusive 10th European crown

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 02:28 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

BARCELONA, April 10 — If Real Madrid win their 10th European title this season, coach Jose Mourinho will no doubt take many of the plaudits but it is his Portuguese compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo who continues to do the business on the pitch.

Ronaldo struck twice in Tuesday's 3-2 quarter-final, second leg defeat at Galatasaray, which put Real through to the last four of the Champions League 5-3 on aggregate, taking his tally in the latest edition of the competition to 11 in 10 matches.

Lionel Messi of Barcelona has topped the scoring chart the past four seasons but Ronaldo is on course to displace his great rival with the Argentine World Player of the Year on eight goals ahead of Wednesday's match against Paris St Germain.

Ronaldo, 28, who became the world's most expensive player when he joined Real from Manchester United for a fee of around 90 million euros (RM358 million) in 2009, now has 50 goals in Europe, 34 for the La Liga champions and 16 for United.

"There nothing left to say, the statistics are there and speak for themselves," Mourinho told a news conference after the game in Istanbul.

"What I think about Ronaldo is what everyone thinks," he added. "I don't think anyone in perfect mental health thinks any differently."

Ronaldo initially found it tough to win over the Real fans when he arrived in the Spanish capital and raised eyebrows earlier this season when he complained of being "unhappy for professional reasons".

He has mainly let his football do the talking since then and although Real's La Liga title defence has faltered they have every chance of securing the record 10th European title that has eluded them since their last triumph in 2002.

"Goals help us to win matches and it is what I have been doing since I arrived here (at Real)," Ronaldo told reporters.

"I am and I feel good and motivated," he added.

"The team too and they are giving me good passes so I can do my work, which is to score goals."

Real's stumble in Istanbul, when Galatasaray scored three goals in 15 second-half minutes, will be a matter of some concern for Mourinho and Ronaldo said there was plenty of room for improvement.

"You always learn from your mistakes," he said.

"The team always tries its best but sometimes we make mistakes," he added.

"It's better that it happens now than in a decisive match. We have to improve in many areas but we are happy to get through to the semi-finals." — Reuters

A three-corner fight in Sg Acheh with PAS jumping into the fray

April 10, 2013

KEPALA BATAS, April 10 – Penang PAS announced its intention to field a candidate at the Sungai Acheh state seat a day after its Pakatan Rakyat partner PKR announced its candidate for the seat.

"PAS will contest in Sungai Acheh again this election," Penang PAS commissioner Datuk Salleh Man said when announcing the list of PAS candidates in Penang.

Yesterday, in a brief statement issued by Penang PKR chairman Datuk Mansor Othman confirmed that PKR will continue to contest in that seat by fielding blogger known as Chegubard or Badrul Hisham Shahrin.

PAS and PKR has been in discussions on this seat as PAS had wanted to contest in the seat.

PAS had traditionally contested in the Sungai Acheh state seat prior to 2008 and in Election 2008, it had given way to PKR to contest there.

In Election 2008, Barisan Nasional's Datuk Mahmud Zakaria had won the seat but by a slim majority of only 250 votes.

Penang PAS Youth chief Yusni Mat Piah (picture) will be going up against Badrul Hisham and BN's incumbent this time.

About 60 per cent of the PAS candidates for the upcoming polls were new faces, said Salleh Man.

PAS is contesting in six state and two parliament seats this election.

He expressed his confidence for PAS to win all of the seats it is contesting in this time around due to its line-up of capable candidates.

The party had only won one state seat, Permatang Pasir, in Election 2008.

Salleh Man, the incumbent Permatang Pasir assemblyman, will be defending his seat.

The new faces are Rosidi Husain for Penaga, Zahadi Mohamad for Sungai Dua, Afnan Taib Azzamudin for Kepala Batas parliamentary seat and former National Malay Chamber of Commerce and industries chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Maidin for Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat.

For the Permatang Berangan state seat, Arshad Salleh, who had lost to BN's Shahbudin Yahya by 1,985 votes in 2008, will be contesting for the seat again.

Hasnah Hashim, who had only lost by 399 votes in the Bayan Lepas state seat to BN's Syed Ameruddin Syed Ahman, will also be contesting for the seat again.

‘Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead’ hits UK chart on Thatcher’s death

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 07:32 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

The Union flag flies at half mast over the Houses of Parliament after the death of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in London April 8, 2013. — Reuters picLONDON, April 10 — The death of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has sent a 74-year-old song, "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead", flying into the UK charts, figures showed today.

The song from the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" was top of Amazon's most downloaded chart today after a social media campaign to promote the upbeat track as a way for detractors to "celebrate" the death of Britain's most divisive post-war leader.

A spokeswoman from Britain's Official Charts Company said the track, sung in the film by the Munchkin characters alongside Judy Garland's Dorothy after the oppressive Wicked Witch of the West dies, would hit No. 10 in the singles chart today.

"The surge in sales follows a campaign to get the track to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart following the death of Margaret Thatcher on Monday," said the spokeswoman.

She said the song had sold over 10,600 copies by late yesterday, which was about 5,000 copies away from a Top 3 placing.

Another version of the song, by late US singer Ella Fitzgerald, was ranked No. 5 in the Amazon download chart.

Amazon reviewers urged others to buy the track to show their disapproval of Thatcher whose free-market ideology drove policies, which alienated the many Britons who demonise the "Iron Lady" as a destroyer of jobs and traditional British industries.

"For those genuine witches, who purposely destroy the lives of others for purely ideological reasons and with not one shred of apology or a single tear, this is the perfect funeral-day track," wrote reviewer Gareth Mark Gee from Nottingham.

A Facebook group, encouraging people to download the "Witch" song to get it to No. 1, had over 5,000 members by today.

Google searches for mental woes decline in summer, says study

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 12:40 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

The study indicates there may be a stronger link between mental disorders and changing seasons than previously thought. — AFP/Relaxnews picSAN DIEGO, April 10 — A new study finds that Google searches for mental health problems drop during the summer, which suggests that there may be a stronger link between mental disorders and changing seasons than previously thought, researchers say.

Researchers from San Diego State University in the US analysed data from Google searches for mental health information made in Australia and the US from 2006 through 2010. Findings showed that searches in both countries for mental illness woes were higher in winter, while ebbing in the warmer months.

Eating disorder searches were 37 per cent lower in summers than in winters in the US, with a 42 per cent drop in summers in Australia.

For bipolar disorder information, searches dropped by at least 16 per cent during summers in both counties. ADHD searches fell by 28 and 31 per cent, respectively, in the US and Australia during summertime.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder searches also dipped in the summer by 18 per cent in the US and 15 per cent in Australia.

Searches on anxiety were down seven percent in the US in the summertime and 15 per cent during Australian summers.

"We didn't expect to find similar winter peaks and summer troughs for queries involving every specific mental illness or problem we studied, however, the results consistently showed seasonal effects across all conditions — even after adjusting for media trends," said Dr. James Niels Rosenquist, a psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The study, announced yesterday, will be published in the May issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. — AFP/Relaxnews

Fear stalks Yangon’s Muslims after Buddhist-led killings

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 12:18 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

A Buddhist woman cries for her home that was burned down during the riot in Meikhtila in this March 23, 2013 file picture. — Reuters picYANGON, April 10 — An ultra-nationalist Buddhist creed is becoming more visible in Myanmar's commercial capital, Yangon, after monks from the apartheid-like movement helped stoke a wave of anti-Muslim violence in the central heartlands.

Many Muslims in the city say they are living in fear after dozens of members of their faith were killed in March by Buddhist mobs whipped up by monks from the "969" movement, a name that refers to attributes of the Buddha, his teachings and the monkhood.

Calm has been restored in Meikhtila and other volatile central areas after authorities imposed martial law and dispatched troops. A Reuters examination of the violence showed it was well-organised, abetted at times by police turning a blind eye.

But concerns linger among Muslims in Yangon, a city of about 4 million people undergoing rapid change during Myanmar's transition from 49 years of oppressive military rule that ended in March 2011.

Fears simmer after 13 boys died in a fire in an Islamic school on April 2. Officials blamed faulty electrical equipment but many Muslims believe the fire was started deliberately.

"At night-time nobody sleeps," said Mohamed Irshad on his way home from midday prayers at a mosque in Mingalar Taung Nyunt, a mostly Muslim neighbourhood. "We have a guard, because some time they might come to attack."

Another worshipper, Ruhla Min, said the imam warned his congregation not to be provoked into violence, but to be patient and stay calm. "We prayed for peace," Ruhla Min said.

Some of the radical "969" monks have spoken in Yangon in recent weeks and recordings of their speeches are widely available.

Among the best selling speakers is Wirathu, who was jailed for inciting anti-Muslim riots in 2003 and released last year when the government freed hundreds of political prisoners.

A man stands in front of a mosque as it burns in Meikhtila in this March 21, 2013 file picture. — Reuters picKyi Lwin, who sells DVDs in central Yangon, said the movement was not anti-Muslim but meant to "build a fence" around Buddhism and discourage Buddhists from interacting with Muslims who may try to convert them. The speeches convinced him not to buy goods from Muslims or eat at their restaurants, he said.

Ma Than Htwe said she had put a "969" sticker on her juice stall because some people thought she looked Muslim and that was losing her business.

Muslims account for 5 per cent of Myanmar's 60 million people but have a much greater representation than their numbers would suggest among the wealthier merchant class, feeding resentment among some of those who remain impoverished despite the political and economic transformation under way.

"If you talk to people about their economic life, it hasn't really changed. They are still struggling to survive," said Aye Chan Naing, executive director of Democratic Voice of Burma, a media group. "Monks openly preach about taking businesses back into Buddhist hands. That appeals to a lot of people."

A Muslim, he worries about the spread of prejudice and the failure of the government to educate people about the danger. But he also warns against tarring all monks with the same brush.

"There were lots of Buddhist monks not condoning this violence, but preaching peace and reconciliation. Even in Meikhtila, there were quite a lot of Buddhist monks and locals helping the Muslims," he said.

Ye Htut, a presidential spokesman and deputy minister of information, noted that Myanmar has more than 500,000 monks.

Soe Thein, a Buddhist mechanic, talks to Reuters reporters in Meikhtila March 28, 2013. — Reuters pic"Only the handful had some extremist idea. The majority of Myanmar people and monks are against these actions," he said in an email to Reuters. "There are many cases in which monks and the community save the lives of Muslims."

President condemns 'extremists'

Even so, some people worry that violence could derail reforms. An easing of rules on freedom of speech, for instance, has allowed political debate but also unleashed anti-Muslim sentiment.

In a televised speech on March 28, President Thein Sein warned "political opportunists and religious extremists" not to instigate violence and said he would not hesitate to use force to protect lives and property.

At least 110 people were killed in attacks on Rohingya Muslims in two bouts of violence in Rakhine State in the west in 2012, according to the government. Tens of thousands of Rohingya, who are denied citizenship by Myanmar and are stateless, are now effectively segregated in camps.

Hostility against the Rohingyas is longstanding, especially in Rakhine State where an estimated 800,000 of them live. In contrast, Yangon is a diverse city dotted with Buddhist pagodas, Islamic mosques, Christian churches and Hindu temples.

On one bustling street corner, Zaw Min, a Buddhist book vendor, sat next to his friend of 10 years, a Muslim who sells TV remote controls.

Riot policemen form up near a fire during riots in Meikhtila in this March 22, 2013 file photo. — Reuters picThe men spend most of their days side by side on plastic stools, but their complicated friendship is emblematic of the uneasy relationship between the two communities.

Zaw Min said they often defend each other when a customer starts an argument. But prominently displayed on his sign is a "969" sticker and he says he wouldn't buy anything from a Muslim unless there was really no alternative.

When asked to comment, his Muslim friend simply shook his head without looking up.

Zaw Min said Buddhists should support Buddhist businesses that will use their money to make donations to monks and contribute to the construction of monasteries.

"If there is a fight between religions, I will fight for the Buddhist religion," he said. — Reuters

Pengundi pos di London tidak sabar mengundi

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 12:59 AM PDT

April 10, 2013

"Malah sekejap sahaja.

CARA KERJA PUSAT UNDI POS

- Bernama
