Wantan noodles to enjoy in cool comfort

Char Siu Wantan Noodles.Char Siu Wantan Noodles.MY friend J was eager to take me to eat at her favourite wantan noodle shop – Restoran Hung Kee -- in Taman OUG in Kuala Lumpur. A restaurant owner herself, she marvelled at how clean the shop is and how good the noodles are.

Most of the time when we eat wantan noodles it's always at a coffeeshop that's none too clean and you come out of it perspiring. So for a change we ate comfortably in a shop with air-conditioning, and it was as clean and bright as she described it.

Wantan Noodles with Char Siu and Minced Pork.Wantan Noodles with Char Siu and Minced Pork.I had the noodles with wantan and char siu in soup, and was impressed that the slices of char siu or barbecued pork came in a separate plate so that it would not lose their flavour in the soup. The noodles were nicely springy, the soup was clear and sweet with no sickly MSG aftertaste. Best of all, there were five large, plump and smooth wantan in the soup, with a tasty pork and shrimp filling.

The char siu was thickly sliced, and the meat was moist and tender, and sticky sweet. I tasted her char siu tow – the lightly charred end of the long strip of barbecued belly pork, glistening with fat drippings – and loved it.

Sui Kow or shrimp and pork dumplings.Sui Kow or shrimp and pork dumplings. The sui kow or dumplings were more minced meat than shrimp, with slivers of crunchy wood fungus in them. I would have preferred more shrimp in these dumplings.

You could have your wantan noodles with roast pork, chicken feet and mushrooms, minced pork, roast pork with mushrooms or any combination you wish. We ordered one with both minced pork and char siu in it. The minced pork had the right combination of fat and meat, cooked in soya sauce with garlic.

Unusually for a noodle shop, it has nasi lemak too. We shared a plate of this with deepfried chicken, onion and ikan bilis sambal, fried crispy ikan bilis, hard-boiled egg. It came with a small bowl of curry with potatoes in it. The rice was fluffy and coconut enough; we loved the light and crispy fried ikan bilis, and the sweet and hot sambal with lots of onions in it.

Nasi lemak with deepfried chicken and onion sambal.Nasi lemak with deepfried chicken and onion sambal. The prices are only slightly higher than those in the coffeeshops. My char siu wantan noodles are RM6, the nasi lemak with chicken RM7.90 and the sui kow RM5.50 for five pieces. There is nasi lemak with sotong too, at RM6.90.

Hung Kee is located at 33 Jalan Hujan Rahmat 3, Taman Overseas Union Garden, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, tel: 012 3066 676 (Mr Chong).

Butter cakes to love

The Marble Coffee Cake on the left, and the Butter Cake. The Marble Coffee Cake on the left, and the Butter Cake.Step out of Hung Kee on a Saturday morning in OUG, and it's the street market right on its doorstep. Walk round the corner into Jalan Hujan Rahmat, and you will encounter a stall that sells home-made butter cakes, with a van parked next to it.

It's a rarity to get good butter cakes in KL, but you can find them here. The cakes are made with Australian butter, the stall-owner tells me. They are soft, rich and moist, with a fine texture.

There are eight variations of the butter cake at this stall – orange, marble chocolate, marble coffee, chocolate, cappuccino, banana, rum coffee and carrot walnut with mixed fruits.

Lovely butter cake from a street stall at the OUG market.Lovely butter cake from a street stall at the OUG market. The pure butter cake is simply irresistible; you could taste the butter in it and there is no strong artificial essence to cloud its wonderful, original aroma. The next best cake here for me is the marble chocolate, generously streak with dark cocoa whose slightly bitter edge works well with the plain butter part of the cake.  Imagine just having one slice of each cake and a cup of coffee!

The Liandy Buttercake stall is at the market in OUG every Saturday and Sunday from 7.30am to 11.30am. It's RM8 for a quarter of a cake, and RM32 for the whole cake. You should be there early; they sell out fast.

You could call 012-221 6328 to order the cakes, or email Liandy.buttercake@hotmail.com. - August 16, 2013.

Would you drink a ‘just-add-water’ beer?

As his answer to reducing the environmental impact of excess packaging and the need to reach for a cold one as a reward for summiting a mountain or padding across a lake, an entrepreneur out of Alaska has created a 'just-add-water' beer concentrate for outdoor lovers.

Patrick Tatera of Pat's Backcountry Beverages has created a concentrated beer formula that can be turned into a tall frothing pint on a mountain peak or lakeside with the addition of water and the use of a carbonator.

It's a concept that tries to spare campers and hikers from having to lug cans of brewsky in their backpacks and yet provide parched outdoor lovers with a sudsy refreshment in the wilderness.

The company also sells portable carbonators. In its concentrated form the beer has a high percentage of alcohol akin to vodka or whiskey but it is diluted with the addition of water and the carbonation process.

The formula is made with a "hybrid brewing technology" and a patent-pending fermentation process. The beer concentrate is expected to be available mid-September, with a potential roster of international distributors.

The four-pack Pale Ale and the Black IPA will be sold for $9.95 USD. Each pouch makes one 16oz beer.

Meanwhile, outdoor experts at Outsideonline.com have come up with a gallery of the best outdoor-inspired cans of beer for 2013, including the best post-surf brew and beer for barbecues. - AFP/Relaxnews, August 16, 2013.

Isinbayeva condemns Green-Tregaro’s rainbow gesture

Latest Update: August 16, 2013 07:52 am

The face of the Moscow world championships, Yelena Isinbayeva (pic), has condemned Swede Emma Green-Tregaro's gesture of support for the Russian gay community as disrespectful and said she supported the law banning the promotion of homosexuality.

Green-Tregaro competed in today's qualifying round of the high jump at Luzhniki Stadium with her fingernails painted in the colours of the rainbow flag used by the gay movement.

"It's disrespectful to our country, disrespectful to our citizens because we are Russians," Isinbayeva, speaking hesitantly in English, told a news conference.

"Maybe we are different than European people and people from different lands. We have our law which everyone has to respect. When we go to different countries, we try to follow their rules. We are not trying to set our rules over there. We are just trying to be respectful.

""We consider ourselves, like normal, standard people, we just live boys with women, girls with boys... it comes from the history.

"I hope the problem won't ruin our Olympic Games in Sochi ," added the 31-year-old, who is one of Russia's best-known athletes and won her third world title in front of an enthralled crowd on Tuesday.

The controversial Russian legislation, which was passed in June, outlaws some aspects of the promotion of homosexuality and has become a political hot potato ahead of next year's Sochi Winter Olympics, when it will apply to athletes and spectators.

Critics of the law have said it effectively disallows all gay rights rallies and could be used to prosecute anyone voicing support for homosexuals.

Against boycott

Last week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it had sought clarification from Russia on how the law would be applied while there have already been some calls for a boycott of the Games.

Isinbayeva, who is an ambassador for Sochi 2014 and will be mayor of the main athletes' Olympic village, was against this.

"Of course, I don't support this boycott," she said.

"I'm also against this polemic and feel sorry that they try to involve the athletes in such a problem... because we are not prohibiting athletes from participating in Sochi even if they have no traditional relationships," added the world record holder.

"It doesn't matter because... we don't care about nations, about different skin colours, we are athletes, we are one family, and we work very hard for only one goal, to take a gold medal in an Olympic Games, to participate in an Olympic games.

"We are against publicity but not of course against every choice of every single person, it's their life, its their choice, it's their feelings but we are against the publicity in our country and I support our government," she added.

Green-Tregaro got the inspiration for her discreet display of support from seeing a rainbow over the Russian capital.

"When I first came to Moscow, the first thing I saw when I opened the curtains was a rainbow over Moscow and I thought that was a pretty good sign," the 2005 world bronze medallist told reporters.

"I hadn't thought about it before, then I decided to paint my nails. I usually do my nails in something that feels good for me and it was a simple way of showing what I think."

"It felt right," she said showing her brightly coloured nails painted in red, yellow, gold, blue and purple. - Reuters, August 15, 2013.

Former players urge Bartoli to rethink or face regret

Posted: 15 Aug 2013 08:21 AM PDT

Latest Update: August 15, 2013 11:54 pm

Former top tennis players Goran Ivanisevic and Guy Forget have urged Marion Bartoli (pic) to reconsider her shock decision to retire from the sport, saying the Wimbledon champion would regret missing out on many great moments.

The world number seven stunned the tennis world yesterday by calling it a day at the age of 28, six weeks after her first grand slam triumph.

"What she did at Wimbledon was fantastic, but she will regret this decision when Wimbledon comes," Ivanisevic, unable to defend his 2001 Wimbledon title because of a shoulder injury, said in a statement released by the ATP today.

"There is nothing like playing at Wimbledon as 'Wimbledon champion'," added the big-serving Croat, who retired from the sport in 2004 after losing to Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the third round of the grasscourt grand slam on Centre Court.

Former men's world number four Forget said the decision announced after a second-round defeat by Romanian Simona Halep at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati sounded too hasty.

"Marion is a very smart girl, she is so dedicated about the sport that I'm always very cautious about someone's quote right after a defeat," the former French number one said in the same statement.

"I hope she is going to change her mind. You don't want to have regrets looking back. Being a professional player is such an exceptional job and you don't want to look back a few months or years later and think 'why did I stop?'."

He advised Bartoli to simply take a break rather than pack up her rackets for good.

"Don't rush it, just don't rush it," he said.

"Take time, go to the beach for a few days, go running in the park, just get your head together... if you don't want to play the next week, just don't play it, if you want to miss the US Open, fine, but just don't quit.

"Don't take such a radical decision only a few weeks after winning the biggest tournament in the world."

French tennis federation president Jean Gachassin, who was not aware of Bartoli's decision before she made it public, said he had not lost hope of persuading her to reverse her decision.

"Some champions have come back like (Kim) Clijsters or (Justine) Henin and I hope I will make Marion change her mind in the coming months," he told French broadcaster L'Equipe 21.

Former world number one Clijsters won the US Open twice in 2009 and 2010 and the 2011 Australian Open when she returned to the sport after retiring.

"Marion has been such a fighter. I want her to continue training because I know she's going to miss tennis," Gachassin added.

French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou was convinced this was not the end of Bartoli's tennis career.

"Marion, hope you are already preparing your comeback... I checked if we weren't the 1st of April when I read." he wrote on Twitter. – Reuters, August 15, 2013.

Brain “folds” may predict if drugs will help psychosis

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 05:20 PM PDT

August 15, 2013
Latest Update: August 15, 2013 04:20 pm

The extent of "folds" on the outer layer of the brain could give doctors a clue as to how well people suffering problems such as hallucinations or delusions will respond to antipsychotic drugs.

Researchers using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of people with psychosis identified patterns of folds in the brain that could act as markers of whether a patient's symptoms will be eased by medication.

Since around half of young patients get little or no benefit from the first medicines prescribed after a psychotic episode, the scientists said the finding could help identify those at greatest risk and may also help the search for better drugs.

"There have been few advances in developing novel anti-psychotic drugs over the past 50 years and we still face the same problems with a sub-group of people who do not respond to the drugs we currently use," said Paola Dazzan from King's College London's Institute of Psychiatry, who led the research.

"We could envisage using a marker like this one to identify people who are least likely to respond to existing medications and focus our efforts on developing new medication specifically adapted to this group," she added.

Psychosis describes mental illness symptoms like delusions and hearing voices and can be a feature of schizophrenia, which the World Health Organisation says affects about 24 million people globally, and bipolar disorder, which is estimated to affect 4 percent of people.

Current treatment involves a combination of antipsychotic drugs, psychological therapies and social support. But many patients do not respond to the initial medicines prescribed by their doctor, putting them at risk of further psychotic episodes and deteriorating mental health.

Dazzan's team, whose work was published on Wednesday in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, used MRI to scan the brains of 126 people - 80 who had experienced a first episode of psychosis and 46 healthy controls.

The scans were done shortly after the psychotic episodes, and the participants were assessed again 12 weeks later to see whether symptoms had improved after initial treatment with antipsychotic medications.

The researchers looked at a feature of the brain called "cortical gyrification" - the extent of folding or wrinkling of the cerebral cortex, the outermost sheet of brain tissue that plays a key role in memory, language and consciousness.

They found that people who did not respond to treatment had less gyrification in many brain regions - particularly in areas considered important in psychosis such as the temporal and frontal lobes.

"All of us have complex and varying patterns of folding in our brains. For the first time we are showing that the measurement of these variations could potentially guide us in treating psychosis," said Lena Palaniyappan of Britain's Nottingham University, who worked with Dazzan.

The researchers said their findings would need to be validated by further studies before routine MRI scanning could be recommended for all psychotic patients.

But Dazzan said that in the longer term, "if we are able to identify poor responders at the outset, we may be able to formulate personalised treatment plans for that individual patient." - Reuters, August 15, 2013.

Revolusi rakyat Mesir kemenangan siapa?

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 06:32 PM PDT

August 15, 2013

Mujahid Yusof Rawa is MP for Parit Buntar and PAS National Unity Committee chairman.

Agak pelik malah melucukan apabila Dr Morsi dituduh gagal menangani keadaan sedangkan belum pun lagi cukup setahun perjawatannya.

Emergency Ordinance not the answer

Posted: 14 Aug 2013 04:55 PM PDT

August 15, 2013
Latest Update: August 15, 2013 08:00 am

Datuk Zaid Ibrahim founded Malaysia's largest law partnership before focusing on politics. He was a minister in the Abdullah administration, was in Umno, PKR and last in KITA as its president.

I have been following the statements made by the Home Minister, senior police officers and UMNO bloggers who argue that the recent increase in crime is the direct result of the Prime Minister's repeal of the Internal security Act (ISA) and Emergency Ordinance (EO). They are now asking for these detention powers to be restored so the police can combat crime. Some who are clamouring for this U-turn had earlier supported the repeal of both laws only a year ago.

Let us be clear, however, that the ISA was not used against hardcore criminals, whether it was during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's or Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's tenures as PM. It was instead used against political opponents and those deemed to be religious "deviants".  It's time we stop blaming the repeal of the ISA for the increase in crime.

Now let's look at the Emergency Ordinance. I am still trying to understand how the introduction of new detention laws can help fight crime. What the police can do is detain someone—say a drug lord or a "five-star" gangster—for a year or two and put him in a restricted area, say somewhere in Johor. In the days when the EO was used against communist insurgents, the strategy of confining them within a remote and restricted area was effective because back then there were few roads and no television, mobile phones or the Internet. Held incommunicado, the communist operative could not carry out his activities or give instructions to his cadres. But the situation has changed. Mobsters and their syndicates now even have their own Facebook platforms from which they openly communicate with their members, and simultaneously challenge the authorities with their show of strength. In this modern context, how does detaining them help to combat crime?

In the end, hardcore criminals must be put away in prison. Society must be protected in the fullest sense of the word, and not merely be granted a reprieve by selective and intermittent detention. Gang members must be made to realise that the police are stronger than them, and that there is no escape from the punishment of the law if they continue to engage in criminal activities. They must be convinced that the police force will get to them sooner or later. The public can also help if they think the police can protect them; otherwise, they will continue to pay protection money to the gangs.

Suppose the rise in crime and violent killings is due to the police force's inability to cope, either because of a lack of resources or corrupt ties between the force's top guns and the drug lords and gambling syndicates. Suppose corruption has seeped in that deeply. If our problem is similar to say Mexico's, then taking the trouble to introduce new detention laws is a waste of time. A major overhaul of the police is the only way out of this mess.

What the Prime Minister and his Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should do now is to take stock of the real situation and take immediate steps to fight organised crime in the way former President Felipe Calderón did in Mexico. He deployed the military to join forces with those in the police force who were still "clean" to fight the drug lords because he realised the police could not do it on their own. In five years he increased the recruitment of senior federal police officers from 7,000 to 38,000, and he persuaded graduates to enroll so that he could move some of the less reliable officers into retirement. He was not embarrassed to ask for help from the United States in terms of funding, police training and investigative resources to strengthen his own force. He improved the prosecutorial capability of the police force and re-organised the state police to work in tandem and closely with their federal counterparts.

In other words, our leaders must accept that the situation with our own police force has become extremely alarming and urgently requires comprehensive and far-reaching measures. If police officers are on the payroll of the syndicates, then the syndicate bosses would actually want a short spell in detention until things cool down instead of having to face criminal charges in court. That means an EO can be useful to this gangster and can shield him from having to face the full force of the law. An EO, in other words, can be subject to abuse, and innocent parties can also end up being detained at the syndicates' behest.

It's unrealistic and facile to reintroduce detention laws for such intractable and complicated problems. The root causes will not be addressed. When I was a Member of Parliament many years ago, senior police officers (retired and still in service) would confide in me about the problems of corruption in the force. That was one of the compelling reasons we wanted an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission or IPCMC to be introduced as part of a package to deal with the ailing force.

If the problems are not as serious as I have painted, then we should be able to deal with them the way First World countries like Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom do. They have a police force that is capable of investigating crimes professionally, and that has the capability to prosecute them in the courts of law.

If our police force is tainted and is given detention powers once again, then the old system will be put back in place where there will be no incentive to diligently investigate and prosecute criminals. Why gather evidence and risk upsetting the "bosses" when a short detention will do the trick? Some mobsters may end up in Simpang Renggam with the new detention laws, but with their mobile phones and the Internet they can continue running their businesses. So how does an EO help us to reduce crime? It doesn't. Only spring-cleaning the police will restore the community's confidence in the country's safety and security. Half measures and knee-jerk reactions never solve anything.
