Terek fined after Chechen leader calls referee a ‘donkey’

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 09:10 AM PDT

March 21, 2013

Actor Gerard Depardieu stretches a scarf of Terek Grozny soccer club as he poses for a picture during a visit to the Akhmat-Arena sports stadium in Grozny, February 25, 2013. — Reuters picMOSCOW, March 20 — Terek Grozny will be fined 200,000 roubles (RM20,800) and play one match at a neutral venue after Chechnya's leader called the referee a "sellout" and a "donkey" over a loudspeaker during a recent match, a senior Russian FA official said today.

Initially it was believed the stadium announcer had insulted FIFA referee Mikhail Vilkov after he sent off a Terek player in Sunday's 0-0 draw against Rubin Kazan, but Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov — Terek's honorary president — said the words were his.

Half of the fine was levied for "failure to provide for public order and security" and the other half for the cry over the loudspeaker and the stadium announcer's comments in favour of Terek during the match, Russian news agencies reported.

Kadyrov entered the referees' room after the match, which is against regulations, and his bodyguards prevented a match delegate from entering for several minutes, R-Sport quoted FA disciplinary committee chairman Artur Grigoryants as saying.

"The (commission) penalises the club, not individuals," R-Sport quoted him as saying.

Terek could have been fined up to 500,000 roubles or incurred sanctions on their new stadium, named after Kadyrov's late father Akhmat, who was assassinated by a bomb blast at the old ground in May 2004.

Critics accuse Kadyrov of ignoring Russian law and running Chechnya like a fiefdom but President Vladimir Putin has relied upon him to rein in rebels and keep order in the mostly Muslim region, still plagued by militant attacks after two wars against separatists seeking to break from Russia. — Reuters

Liverpool’s Allen set for surgery, misses rest of season

Wigan Athletic's Paul Scharner (L) challenges Liverpool's Joe Allen during their English Premier League soccer match in Wigan, northern England March 2, 2013. — Reuters picLONDON, March 20 — Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen will have surgery on a long-standing shoulder injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the season, the Merseyside club said today.

Allen, who pulled out of the Wales squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Scotland and Croatia on Monday, will have an operation tomorrow in an effort to be fit for the start of the next Premier League campaign.

"Joe Allen is due to have a left shoulder operation tomorrow morning in Liverpool and will be ready to return to football at the beginning of next season," Liverpool first team doctor Zaf Iqbal said on the club website (http://www.liverpoolfc.com).

The 23-year-old midielder suffered a recurrence of the injury in October and has played through the pain barrier since.

The injury has not improved and he was substituted at halftime in Saturday's 3-1 league defeat at Southampton.

Liverpool, seventh in the standings, have slipped out of the running for the Champions League spots, trailing fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur by nine points with eight games to play, but still have a slim chance of qualifying for the Europa League. — Reuters

US$3 tag sale find sells at Sotheby’s for US$2.23 million

March 21, 2013

NEW YORK, March 20 —A US$3 (RM9.60) tag sale buy has turned into a massive windfall for the lucky bargain hunter: the Chinese bowl sold for US$2.23 million at an auction at Sotheby's yesterday.

This handout photo obtained courtesy of Sotheby's shows a small Chinese pottery bowl that started as a US$3 tag sale only to turn into a massive windfall that sold for US$2.23 million during an auction at Sotheby's on March 19, 2013 in New York. — AFP picThe small pottery bowl, finely crafted with an ivory glaze, turned out to be a thousand year old "Ding" bowl, dating from the Song dynasty, which ruled China from 960 to 1279.

The only other similar bowl from the period known to exist has been on display at the British Museum for more than 60 years.

After picking it up for a few dollars down the road in 2007, the buyer displayed it the living room.

More recently, they became curious about its value and brought it to experts for an appraisal.

Sotheby's had estimated the bowl would sell for between US$200,000 and US$300,000.

But four bidders battled over the rare find, and it ultimately sold to renowned London art dealer Giuseppe Eshenazi for US$2.225 million. — AFP/Relaxnews

A daily cup of Greek coffee could be key to longevity

March 21, 2013

ATHENS, March 20 — The elderly inhabitants of the Greek island Ikaria boast some of the highest rates of longevity in the world, and now scientists believe that the secret may lie not just in their heart-healthy Mediterranean diet but in their daily caffeine fix.

A new study found a link between the good cardiovascular health of the island's elders and the boiled Greek coffee they drink daily. — Pic courtesy of shutterstock.comIn a new study in the journal Vascular Medicine, researchers from the University of Athens Medical School found a link between the good cardiovascular health of the island's elders and the boiled Greek coffee they drink daily.

Only 0.1 per cent of Europeans live to be over 90, the researchers said, yet on Ikaria, the figure is 1 per cent, with the islanders tending to live out their long lives in good health.

From a sample of 673 Ikarians aged over 65 who lived on the island permanently, the researchers randomly selected 71 men and 71 women to take part in the study. Medical staff checked for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other ailments, and subjects answered detailed questionnaires about their medical health, lifestyle, and coffee habits. In addition, the researchers tested their endothelial functioning — the endothelium is a layer of cells that lines blood vessels, which is affected both by aging and by lifestyle habits, such as smoking.

Prior studies have suggested that moderate coffee consumption could not only reduce the risks of coronary heart disease but have a positive impact on several aspects of endothelial health, the researchers said.

The researchers investigated all types of coffee that the subjects imbibed — but interestingly more than 87 per cent of those in the study consumed boiled Greek coffee daily. Subjects who drank mainly boiled Greek coffee had better endothelial function than those who consumed other types of coffee. Even in those with high blood pressure, boiled Greek coffee consumption was linked with improved endothelial function.

"Boiled Greek type of coffee, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants and contains only a moderate amount of caffeine, seems to gather benefits compared to other coffee beverages," says lead researcher Dr Gerasimos Siasos. — AFP/Relaxnews

A Minute With: Selena Gomez about growing up with ‘Spring Breakers’

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 07:57 AM PDT

March 20, 2013

Selena Gomez at an earlier photocall for the film 'Spring Breakers'. — Reuters picLOS ANGELES, March 20 — Actress and singer Selena Gomez breaks out of her squeaky clean Disney Channel image to star in the independent film "Spring Breakers" for filmmaker Harmony Korine.

In the film, which opens in wide release Friday, Gomez stars as a young girl who is part of a quartet of college students whose spring break in Florida takes them from parties to jail and a criminal underworld.

Gomez is best known as pop star Justin Bieber's ex-girlfriend and the star of Disney's "The Wizards of Waverly Place," which ended its four season run last year. She recently returned to the channel for a reunion film, "The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex."

Gomez, 20, spoke to Reuters about her career, growing up and transitioning into more adult roles.

Q: Harmony Korine has a reputation for shocking his audience with movies like "Kids," "Gummo" and "Trash Humpers." Weren't you nervous about doing this film?

A: I was more excited and enticed. When I auditioned for Harmony, we talked about how he wanted to leave my lifestyle behind and have me go on this adventure with him. I knew it was going to be crazy, but I was comfortable with it.

Q: What do you mean by lifestyle? The squeaky clean Disney lifestyle which was totally flipped upside down in this movie?

A: It was more that Harmony wanted an innocence because he thought it would be creepier. I agree with him.

Q: You spend most of the film in a skimpy bikini. Did you feel self conscious?

A: When we did the spring break scenes, we were surrounded by hundreds of spring breakers in bikinis who wore even less, so that was okay. I was more uncomfortable in the scenes where I was (in a bikini) getting arrested, in jail and in the pool hall with strangers. It added vulnerability and helped me feel grossed out, which was what my character is supposed to feel.

Q: For someone who started her career on the pre-school show "Barney & Friends" and spent her teen years on the Disney Channel, this must have been unlike any other acting job.

A: It was completely liberating. (Up until this film), everything I've been a part of definitely has been a bit more processed, like how many pieces of jewelry I have on, what my hair looks like. With Harmony, I never wore makeup and he never cared about my hair.

Q: After an experience like that, you must come out the other side feeling like you've grown and changed somewhat.

A: I think that's a really good way of putting it because I feel like I did grow up shooting this. This was the first movie I shot by myself without my mom coming. It was the first time I got to improvise as much as I have.

And to work with someone like James Franco, it was the first time I was around someone of that acting caliber. Harmony believed in me and pushed me to be a better actor, so there's a special place in my heart for Harmony for sure.

Q: You've got a couple of other films in the can - the action film "The Getaway," a cameo in the horror film, "Aftershock." Now that your film career is taking off, why did you go back to Disney for a reunion with your "Wizards" cast?

A: I missed them. I missed the channel, I missed everybody on the show. It was a big part of my life that I'm thankful for. That's where I started so I wanted to go back.

Q: Your younger fans can't see "Spring Breakers." Was this TV movie your way of giving them something new as well?

A: It always made me happy that we got to bring families together every night. I love having that connection with the younger audience and I missed that feeling.

Q: How do you chart a film career from this point on?

A: I'm actually taking a complete turn now and going in to music. My album comes out this summer and I'll be touring. I always structure my music and tours in a way that is geared for my fans and supporters that have been there from the beginning. My music is definitely the kind I would want them to hear.

Q: How do you balance between moving forward into more adult roles while bearing in mind that you are role model to many young girls?

A: It's a very awkward transition to make. I want to challenge myself and (my choices) may not be appropriate for a young audience. I'm choosing movies that I feel are artistically fun and creative. I hope people are appreciative of the work I do. I feel like I'm doing the best I can and hopefully it works out. — Reuters

LOS ANGELES, March 20 — The screenwriter of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" trilogy will tackle one of Alexandre Dumas's best-known novels.

This time, David Goyer will be behind the camera directing Edmond Dantes's vengeance.

The Count of Monte Cristo (published in 1844) tells the story of a young officer who is promoted to captain and is about to marry his fiancée Mercedes. He is betrayed by jealous members of his entourage who accuse him of being a Bonapartist conspirator. As a result, he is sent to the Château d'If prison, not far from Marseille, where he spends 14 years plotting his revenge.

"Sherlock Holmes" screenwriter Michael Robert Johnson will adapt Alexandre Dumas's book for the cinema.

No actor is yet attached to the film. In the past, Jean Marais, Jim Caviezel and Gérard Depardieu have played the part in TV and movie adaptations.

Since the end of "Batman," Goyer has worked to bring Superman back into cinemas with "Man of the Steel" (June 2013).

Thanks to him, Godzilla will also be back in a 3D movie due out in 2014.

He has also carried on his TV work and his new series on Leonardo da Vinci's youth—"Da Vinci's Demons"—will air starting on April 12 on cable network Starz. – AFP-Relaxnews

Johor tidak lagi simpanan tetap

Posted: 19 Mar 2013 04:11 PM PDT

March 20, 2013

Pakatan Rakyat sangat yakin, Johor bukan lagi simpanan tetap Umno/BN.

Selalunya 70-30.

Native Sabahan Erna is (not) Malay but loves Malay literature. Her hobbies: cats/gaming/blogging at ernamerin.com/Tweeting at @ernamh.

MARCH 20 — It has become increasingly clear that many of our leaders are out of touch with the realities of everyday living for the less monied.

When our own prime minister says that RM50 a month is enough money for a family's groceries, you wonder if his accountant is spiking his Kopi O with happy pills.

Singleton me spends at least RM50 a week on groceries, not including the food for my two cats. RM50 a month would have me eating nothing but eggs and rice with maybe the occasional can of sardines.

But besides the cluelessness about what things cost in relation to average Malaysian salaries, the level of condescension is what irks me the most.

In Global Witness' expose Inside Malaysia's Shadow State, a lawyer refers to some money grubbers as "people of substance."

That is Malaysia's big problem — that we regard people with money as "people of substance" regardless of where or how they got that money.

Riches and power have become the way we measure "substance" instead of integrity or moral fibre. What does that say about us as a nation?

The aforementioned lawyer even condescendingly says this of rural, poorer folk: "They wouldn't know how to find a lawyer, would they?"

As if somehow it is their own fault for being ignorant, poor and easily used by "people of substance."

The huge chorus of "Unite Sarawakians and oust the evildoers" has already started but here's the thing.

It is really not that simple.

As I have said many times, Sarawak is a complicated state. The people I talk to over here in West Malaysia gloss over certain things — like the sheer size and geography of Sarawak as well as the diverse make-up of its peoples.

You cannot compare Sarawak and Selangor directly.

To get from, say, Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur, I have the option of taking the bus or the slow dinosaur we call the KTM Komuter.

In Sarawak, to journey from one end to the other end of the state in the same day would require travel by air.

Even in Kuching, Sarawak's pristine capital, it is not easy to get a decent Internet connection. My friends in Sarawak tell me the quality of broadband is poor though it is far easier to get Wi-Fi now than before.

All your angry tweets and social media grouses are not going to reach the nomadic Penan who is far too busy trying to make a living off of land that is being encroached upon by developers.

Do you know that many indigenous people in the remotest of areas do not have MyKads, their children without birth certificates? This is because, for them, it is a long journey to the nearest registration centre.

It took a foreigner, Swiss-born Bruno Manser, to unite the Penans before the many splintered tribes discovered they could use the courts to find legal redress.

That makes you wonder: Didn't anyone in Sarawak care enough to do the same for them then? Why did Manser, an outsider, have to be the one? Why did it have to take a foreign NGO like Global Witness to create a video as damning as theirs?

These are questions I have no answers for.

In essence, Sarawak's problems have no easy fix.

There needs to be more discourse, more openness, more fact-finding before we can begin to think about change in the state.

What will help the state move forward is for Sarawak to no longer remain "in the shadows."

Until then, let us be thankful that some light has been shed on the darkness that is the reality of life for Sarawak's indigenous people.

* This is the personal opinion of the columnist

Rosmah dakwa beliau berat hati terima hadiah barang kemas

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 02:24 AM PDT

Oleh Boo Su-Lyn
March 20, 2013

"Apabila semuanya berubah, harapan orang ramai mengenai isteri perdana menteri turut berubah.

Katanya, kesemua mereka disiasat mengikut Akta Kesalahan Keselamatan (Langkah-Langkah Khas) (SOSMA) 2012.

Turut hadir Peguam Negara Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.
